Well, I did say a little later on in the post that the CD was better on the second listen, but you're
right...two listens really isn't enough to pass final judgement on a CD. In all fairness, I am actually
starting to genuinely like the CD. Not to imply that it's a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination,
it's just good. Just not good compared to the remainder of Queesryche's work, and that is where the problem
lies for most listeners. I think the CD would be greatly improved had they not gone with the overly
processed back-up vocals on every freaking track of the CD. I know they wanted to do something different,
and I appreciate the effort, but it takes away the hook to the song, and therefore just doesn't quite work.
Another problem I have lies with the lyrical content. Past QR CDs have always tended to have an underlying
theme to the entire CD, and that is something that seems to be lacking in Q2K. Maybe it's there and I just
haven't found it yet, but I've been searching to no avail for about 5 listens now. We'll see how this CD
stands up after a few months, then we can really pass judgement on it.

Yep. I bet, if the RIAA doesn't bog them down in lawsuits, that it sells like hotcakes. Ever since the Rio came out, I've been waiting for someone to come up with one of these.

There have been a couple attempts in the past to create something like this for a Senior Design Project at my school. I think there is a group working on it again this year. interesting, but i still think that mp3s are a step backwards from cds, just like cassette tapes were a step back from records. just my opinion though. later.

While this may be a step back from CDs aurally, it offers a MUCH bigger gain in storage space. CD audio discs can only store 74 minutes of data, which a CD-ROM filled with MP3s stores (at 128Kbps) about 650 minutes of data, or ten HOURS worth of music. That's a HUGE gain for people who, say, don't like to switch CDs very often - they can just put all their favorite DT albums, for example, on one CD and tote that around instead of having to put them in a changer or switch discs a lot.

I know I'd buy this if I had $300 to spend. I definitely think it'd be worth it. And just think: You wouldn't have to put a PC in your car to have a ton of MP3 music.

I think the RIAA will jump all over Pine, but it won't help. It didn't work with Rio, it won't work with Pine. I personally am living for the day when regular CD players can play mp3s. That will be cool. Just think-- you could fit I&W, Awake and probably FII also all on to the same CD-R. Not bad for a day's work. === *Trent

My point exactly. I understand all the technical specifications, and i do agree that they are a great way to sample music over the internet, but i wouldnt pay money for them as a final product. of course, i've been told that it depends on what software you use to encode mp3s affects the quality. but i still havent heard anything that is as nice as cds, even at the 160kbs rating.

on another note, what do others think about the success or failure of mp3.com? In my opinion, they went public too early. the mp3 format was invented for the purpose of having "cd quality" music to trade over the internet. i havent met one person who collects mp3s say they would actually pay for the music they are listening to. they see it as a way to get free music, which really hurts the marketability of the product. as long as it's available for free for those who know where to find it, they arent going to pay for it? later.

It just isn't possible. The whole reason mp3's get the incrediable compression they get is that they remove some portion of the spectrum from the sound. The algorithm is chosen so that the 'least important' parts are what are lost, but on a decent stereo (ie not standard crappy computer speakers) what is lost is the fullness and richness of the sound. You simply cannot get something for nothing. -Andy

No it wasn't. That's what it's been used for, but the original purpose for mp3 was to store music on interactive CDs. Whatever that means. It ultimate use has extended past it's original invention. As far as mp3 goes, I think people make too big deal of them. I personally am waiting for the next generation in digital music. Mp3s are good, but they're only Phase One IMHO. The best is yet to come. === *Trent

Alright! Discipline are an incredible band. I was lucky enough to catch them at Phantasmagoria last year -- didn't realize how infrequently they play gigs at the time. If anybody thinks they might be into some piano-heavy and generally heavy prog (not metal mind you), Discipline would be an excellent band to check out. Can't go wrong with either of their albums, though I prefer the second one, "Unfolded Like Staircase".

Speaking of Discipline shows...did anybody here go to this year's Progday? I would've had there been a few more "big" name acts, but seeing as how there weren't, I couldn't really rationalize trekking the many hours it'd take to get to North Carolina.
