both can play audio CDs, MP3 CDs, and Video CDs.
it's very cheap too, about Rp 1.3 million (USD 1 = Rp 7500)

well i am in Connecticut, and this morning i was listening to 95.1 FM in
my car (normally not a fan of radio but its a mostly classic rock
station, lots of old rush and yes and other cool sh*t when i turn it on)
and they did something they called the "Rolling Rock Rock Report" -
basically news clips about music stuff - like new inductees to the Rock N
Roll hall of fame, et cetera..... and when the dude started speaking, the
intro music was part of LINES IN THE SAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i know some of you are very anti-DT-going-mainstream, and no, FII was
*not* my fave album (I&W thank you) by any stretch - but i think it is
absolutely awesome that even for a few seconds they're getting
unsolicited airtime that they totally deserve.. like when MTV used to
use that piece by megadeth for MTV news, back in the day when they really
were a music channel. ........

I would guess it will be, as are standard vidoe DVDs... As it stands today, you can't do digital out from a DVD player on a track w/ 96 (as opposed to standard 48khz) sampling rate... for some sort of reproduction reason... (or something like that... forget the exact specifics, but somethign that the players won;t allow digital out, only analog out)

I was talking more about taking MP3s that you make yourself, and then burn using a DVD-R drive... not somethign downloaded...

you are crazy...128kbps Mp3's sound like crap (worse than a cassette)! I have burned a few CD's with them, and i can not stand to listen to it...i gave them all away. It sounds like the high end is in a washing machine. I have heard many different encoders and they all sound bad. There is a noticable improvement at 192kbps, but it does not sound as good as the original wav file. i'd take the blindfold test any day.
I think the real test is going to be the 16bit CD vs a 24/96 DVD audio...i want to hear that, i would be surprised if you can't...but i don't know since i have yet to hear one.

Precisely. The ptacek knows all <bows in deference>. Audiophiles will always be audiophiles, and will be able to hear the difference between a cd running on system with 1/4" thick speaker cables and one with 5/16" speaker cables. But for the rest of us a well recorded mp3 at a decent bitrate doesn't sound bad at all.
But that's beside the point. The sound quality is not the reason for the hubbub with mp3. Or at least not the primary reason. Here is the reason:
Near CD quality sound at a size small enough to be efficiently trasmitted over the internet.
Everyone get that? How many songs you can fit on a CD with mp3 is nice and all, but it's their ability to be easily uploaded and downloaded (except for people with .4 kb/s transfer rates) that has caused all the uproar. It completely upends the music distribution system that has been in place since the dawn of commercial music. Whether or not it sounds as good as or better than CD's is not the point. New formats will come around with better compression algorithms, or increases in bandwidth will allow less compression to be used, or (more likely) both. At some point the music being transfered over the internet will sound better than cd's.
Another key point with mp3's is that it is the first significant move of making music into software. Within 5 years any new stereo you buy will be able to communicate with your computer(s) over a home network, be it wireless, over cable-TV lines, or (my bet) through the house's power lines. So you could warehouse your music collection on your computer and be able to instantly access any piece of music, or playlist, or whatever from any stereo in your house. Eventually once bandwidth grows enough you will be able to access your music collection from anywhere on the earth. Hell, you probably won't own a collection persay, just a list of songs with access keys stating that you own the rights to listen to them that will allow you to play the songs from the server of the musicians' record company.
In any case the deal with mp3's is not that they're supposed to be the greatest format there has ever been, or that they sound better than cd's, but that it's the first step in a series of changes that will revolutionize the way we listen to music.

That's the beauty of software, the mp3 player you have on your harddrive right now is never going to stop functioning (well it could if it's nag-ware or something, but probably not). Whatever the new trend is, you'll still be able to play mp3's. And it's a good bet that whatever new format arises there will be free utilities released that will allow you to convert mp3's to the new format.

Depends on what you're refering to. You could still get thousands of hours of music on a DVD, just not in DVD Audio format. While DVD Audio will be watermarked (as will be DVD Audio players) that's somewhat beside the point at DVD Audio will take up shitloads of room with its higher definition and more channels. If you just want to burn mp3's onto a DVD you will indeed be able to get hundreds, if not thousands, of hours on one disc.

As I mentioned, DVD Audio will have massive sound files. MP3, or any compressed sound format, is in no more danger from it that it is from wav files. They're just too big to be practical for transfer over the internet. At least until we all have fiber optics running directly to our desks. I'd be more concerned about the SDMI sound format.

Wow. I didn't know they were so cool as to play some prog metal too, ESPECIALLY Symphony X. That's too cool. My wife Catherine has some cousins in Phoenix, so we do the four hour road trip out to Phoenix (Tempe to be exact) a lot. The both of us now exclusively listen to that station pretty much the whole way into Arizona--which, if anybody else here is familiar with the state, is a VERY lonely drive through the desert until you get to Phoenix. It's nice to know at least one station in America still has some guts. And you know what? That station is HUGELY popular, one of their morning djs (forget the name) has like, 20-something percent of the total listening population at the time he is on. That is supposedly an unbelievably high percentage of people listening. This is according to my wife's brother who is a dj up in Washington state. He's heard of the guy through trade publications and stuff.

What band originally did that song? I wasn't aware it was a cover. I've had the album for about a month now, and I TOTALLY agree, you MUST pick this one up if you happen to stumble upon an extra $20 bill someplace! It's been on constant rotation in my cd player (and on my Ytseradio shift on Thursday nights 7-9 pm Pacific time<---shameless plug!!). It's great that KUPD is playing new TON. I heard them promoting the release of the album about a month ago, giving the release date and talking a bit about it.
Also, since it is my opinion that this list desperately NEEDS some new conversation lately to tide us over, I would like to mention another great album that is out (IMO) and that is getting regular rotation on my "NOW PLAYING" lists: Machine Head's new one titled "The Burning Red." Although it's a *little* different in the feel of the music than their previous two kick-ass releases, it still measures up to my scrutinizing ear for kick-ass metal. It's a very emotionally-charged album, with heaviness up the wazoo. It still has that classic sound in the guitars that Rob Flynn does--you know, that "dee daw dooo" high note stuff that he sticks in the middle of the riffs? The only real difference I noticed is that it is not _quite_ as complex as the other two, which brings it down one notch on my scale from a Perfect 10 to a 9. But that is easily overlooked IMO hehe.
Another great album that needs to be discussed is Meshuggah's Chaosphere album. IT FUCKING RIPS! If you want to know what the future of great heavy music is going to sound like (read: what other bands will be trying to copy, and most will be miserably failing at), you HAVTA listen to Meshuggah! Also, another must-have of this band's is Destroy, Erase, Improve.

Great great stuff (on first listen, anyway).

As long as the MP3 discussion goes, I have 128 kbit mp3s encoded with the XING algorithm, which are with significantly worse sound with the Fraughoffer (sp?) algorhithm encoded ones, i.e. with l3enc, mp3 producer or mp3 compressor. Besides that a 256 kbit mp3 encoded with mp3 compressor IS with cd quality. VQFs maybe are better, but it's not the first time in the music industry when a better product gets overridden by a product with mediocre quality but supported by a massive advertising campain.

According to the web site at http://www.ayreon.com/ Russell Allen of Symphony X has been confirmed as one of the vocalists on the forthcoming Ayreon album, along with Neal Morse of Spock's Beard, Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden, and others I've never heard of.
I really enjoyed the last one, Into The Electric Castle, which was blessed with the talents of Anneke van Giersbergen and Sharon den Adel, but the new line-up appears to have a distressing lack of women. God forbid I should start having negative preconceptions about an album which is still such a long way away, and about which I know very little, but it could turn out to be a bit one-sided and unbalanced.
Even so, with three of my favourite singers, I'll probably still love it. If only James LaBrie were on it as well . . .

Thank you for bringing that up. I pondered shedding some light on that fact. After some thought, I elected to keep my mouth shut for fear of starting another flame war. (We have been touchy lately)
MP3's are great for just what you said: "hearing new artists and bands." Beyond that, *I* don't find them pleasant at all for regular listening. They are dirty and grainy sounding.
