actually, yes....they replaced my computer at work, and it has a 5.25 floppy
drive....and i run a couple of experiments off a 286, gotta love that
old-time stuff.
'bout the topic, I just watched Ben-Hur again (the 1959 Charlton Heston
version), and I'm convinced that somebody involved with the songwriting for
Savatage must have seen the movie while composing the Streets album. Pieces,
just a few notes here and there out of the score reminded me strongly of
certain Sava songs, I can think of "Ghost in the Ruins" of the top of my
head, and I know i recognized at least one more bit that turned into a
Streets riff.

The reason forthis is because pressed CDs can last as long as fifty years
I'm probably gonna regret asking this, but how can they possibly know that?
As far as fingerstyle bass playing goes, there's not really any trick to it, just gotta get used to the motion, which is kinda awkward at first. One bit of advice I can offer, though, is to learn to play with three fingers from the very beginning. It's a skill that comes in quite handy (pun intended!), but it's really hard to pick up if you're already used to using only two (or so I'm told =^). You should also hold your right hand in such a way that your wrist is as straight as possible, which will not only make your fingers move more easilly, (don't believe me? wiggle your fingers straight wristed, then wiggle 'em bent wristed...) but will make you less prone to get those spooky hand-crippling repetitive stress injuries. I usually alternate my fingers 1-3-1-3 instead of the traditional 1-2-1-2, because I hold my hand at a 90degree angle to the string, and the third and first finger are equal in length. That's not really conventional technique, though, so don't think you're *supposed* to do it that way...
A few more advanced right hand techniques include using the index finger in an up-down motion, kinda like sitar-pickin'. Good for fast repeated notes on one string, a la 80's metal. And string skipping can be made easier by using the thumb to pluck notes on the lower string and the other fingers on higher strings, kinda banjo-style...(It's the only way I can play some Myung lines...)
I can barely play slap bass at all, so I usually pretend that I think it isn't REALLY cool =^). "Aww, man, that's just a gimmick. Learn to GROOVE. =^)"
Hope that helps -Fran

The New King Crimson is MUCH better than I expected (I don't know why I expected less... I think I've just not been in a KC mood lately) and I'd have to go so far as to say it RULES. Awesome polythythmical guitar layering, and really exceptional writing. I can't WAIT to actually PURCHASE a copy. :)

Good pitch/harmony? It doesn't exist. :) The best pitch effects are only do-able in the studio. :) (I'm just being jaded. I'll get to this in a minute)
> Now, I know the standard answer would be Eventide, but my price range caps > out @ about $1400.
You SHOULD be able to get an Eventide for that price. Do you really need/want one? You'll still need a Lex or a TC to get your reverbs and choruses and a lot of other toys!
> I've looked into the G-Force from TC, and the Lex MPX 1 > and MPX G2. 1). I don't know if I would call it the best. I was in EXACTLY the same position as you this past summer, and I opted for the G2. It was the closest gear battle I've ever had, but the Lex has more configuration options that I feel I'll use and the G2 specifically, can do some things that nothing else can do (esp. related to vintage type sounds that I don't think you'd use... things like mu-tron and real fuzz and univibe etc.) The T.C. is its equal, IMO, but neither is superior to each other. They are the 2 best processors on the market for electric guitarists, IMO. The MPX-1 is there too, but it's really like the G-Force, and in that battle, I'd pick the G-force for the pedal matrix concept. 2). I don't think you can beat the TC pitch/harmony. They outsourced to WaveMechanics (I think that's the group) to implement their intelligent pitch/harmony (Intellipitch uses the exact same processing if you want to stick with Rocktron). Vai did his little mini clinic/tour and was only playing from an Ibanez into a Legacy with a G Force (he uses the Fireworx a lot too, but not at this gig) and the harmony was perfect. Well, as perfect as you can expect. I videotaped the show... if I was a competent trader, I'dd offer people copies, but I'm way too slow! :) Anyways, you can't get the 2 guitarists sound with 1 guitarist, as you already know. 3). If you want to consider what the G2 has to be a preamp, then the G-force has one too, and maybe moreso. The G2, however, does something really trippy, that no one has ever done before, to my knowledge. This is what I think you're mistaking for a preamp. It actually has 2 signal paths. You plug your guitar into it, and then on the back, you come out of it and into the direct input of your preamp or head. THEN it also has a path for the effects loop (the way the G-Force and everything else works). What this does is puts some effects TRULY before the preamp (Chameleon)... things like wah, fuzz, and analog distortions/boosts (which you can use to boost your normal distortion, or to get a retro sound when applied to a preamp clean channel). Another thing totally killer about the G2 is that when you use a "tube screamer" or "mutron III" patch, you're actually USING THAT GEAR! It's not a digital representation, or even a physical model. It's the real analog circuitry in the rack unit. The combination of these two lead me to this as a definite winner for my purposes. This thing will allow me to get anything from brutal Carcass kind of distortions (when used with my existing preamp... you DO NOT WANT TO USE THE G-2 AS YOUR SOLE TONE GENERATOR!) to phreaked out Scofield tones, and anywhere in between. The G-2's main downside is the footpedal and programming the footpedal routines. I still haven't gotten it worked out totally, in terms of maxing out the use of the pedal. Beyond programming, the downside with the pedal is the cost. It is probably the best pedal system out there in terms of all in one (I switched from a Ground Control... would have been cute to use a "G-Force" with a "Ground Control") functionality... but it's WAY too expensive (which is why I was pusing the pedal when Richard Warren was selling it, for anyone who would be considering an MPX 1 or a G2). The G-Force wins in this category, with an innovative matrix concept (which you will learn about when you look at the manual... too much detail for me here!) 4). The best thing for harmonizing is an Eventide, IMO. :) ALSO, Ibanez intonation will never make for totally great harmonizing. Almost no guitar is perfect (in terms of equal tempered tuning) but Ibanez is particularly bad, in my experience (and that's not a knock, Vinnie... I still use only my 2 Ibeenhads for rock playing... still love the way they feel) There are some solutions. Check out the Buzz Feiton system!
Vinnie, go to Guitar Center, and buy one or the other, and tell the sales dude, "I WILL be returning this. I AM going to play this for a week or 2, and then come back, return it, and get the other one, and THEN I'll choose which one I'll keep." Because of their return policy, that's totally a legit thing to do. Just be polite and keep everything mint (don't remove the plastic screen covers, or spill shit on the manual, etc!) Mail me before you buy the G2 and tell me the price he quotes. I'll see if I can find my receipt and get you a better price (I screwed the guy way down...)
> possibilities are endless and the TONE is to die for), through a BBE, Mesa > 50/50, and a Mesa Recto 4x12.
Great tone and the BBE do not co-exist. :) The BBE is there to compensate for a lack of great tone. Why do so few people with great tone use BBE? It gives an unnatural compression / harmonic filter to the audio tone. It has its use, but not in generating anything called "TONE to die for" IMNot-At-Fucking-All-Humble-So-I-Know-Someone's-Gonna-Be-Pissed-At-Me-Opinio n. I've learned to treat the Sonic Maximizer as an effect, not as part of "tone."
> On a side note, Does Petrucci use the Eventide on tour?

Right now I'm listening to Pain of Salvation's One Hour by the Concrete Lake. I haven't been THIS blown away by an album in QUITE a long time; not even the DT albums I've heard (except with the exception of ACoS, since that was the first DT album I'd ever heard) have evoked this kind of reaction in me before.
The harmonic language that these guys speak is just absolutely AMAZING, the lyrics and vocals are SUPERBLY done, I just love those long distorted guitar tones that they use, and the choice of acoustic guitar that they use in conjunction with all of the above makes for a totally unique and absolutely amazing listen. If you haven't ever heard this album before, I STRONGLY suggest you drop what you're doing and pick it up.
Are there any other PoS albums out and, if so, are they of this caliber? PLEASE, I HAVE to know.

This is so *pathetic*... I mean, it's like they're so *poor* that they must get out on the street and beg. They should be ashamed of themselves. This is truly outrageous... The only thing I'd donate are both my copies of ShitLOAD and Shit-ReLoaded... excuse me for saying that, but Metallica was once one of my favorite bands and they've turned into a money-makin'-machine. Or should I say "money-beggin'-machine"? Pathetic... Whoever pays them money is in idiot and should be shot... IMO.

I couldn't agree more. But then about 95% of what we call "singers" wouldn't sing. Example: Sheryl Crow, Bruce Springsteen, James Hetfield, all of N'Sync, all of BackDOOR Boys, etc...

About boots, I don't see the big deal with selling boots. Your basically trading one thing for another. Some of us don't have any boots or go to enough concerts to tape, so what are we to do? I have nothing to trade so if I want a boot and the guy doesn't want money, I'm out of luck. I did manage to get the HOB broadcast(the audio downloads), but who on this list hasn't? I would really love a copy of the whole Atlanta show since I saw that one. Well moving on to Crimson, I happen to like the instrumentals on Perfect Pair. Just because it may not have a melody you can hum doesn't mean its not creative or focused. I prefer the instrumentals on that album over the vocal tunes except for "dig me". What a cool concept for a song anyway.

BTW what is happening with The Who lately? :) Didn't they play some concerts? If it ever happens something similar with The Who as was the Freddie Mercury tribute concert on Wembley, it will be great! :)
With all this talk on this musicians ... almost year passed since I try to find some of this stuff, Levin, Brufford bands, projects, Upper Extremities etc ... never did. A friend bought the Project 5 (correct name?) but other than that - nothing. Any server where I can get some stuff from this bands? I have a feeling I'll love it, because Discipline is by now the first and my fave Crimson album. And no, it wasn't psychological uncoscious preasure to like Crimosn stuff, because when I first heard Discipline on tape it was named as some Holger Czukay album. I just knew I LOVED IT, and later found out it was actually Crimson album. :) Funny.
Heh, in very stupid way said, ... I don't really mean it but ... there will come a time when these guys start passing away (Page, Clapton, Blackmore, Toni Iommi) and I just hope that there will be huge tribute concerts for all these bands, as it was for Freddie. :)
OK, I embarassed enough myself and think I'll shut up for a while now. :)
P.S. Happy Orthodox Easter to everybody!
