I just checked out the sound clips from Eros & Thanatos from Empty Tremor's
fan club site.. Some of you might remember that about 1 or 2 years ago there
was a rumor about a sound clip being an excerpt from DT's Metropolis 2 (as I
remembered, at that time there wasn't even a confirmation that DT will be
making a new album..) which turned out to be just a demo from the upcoming
album from Empty Tremor.. and as I remembered, quite a lot of you, although
you finally found out that it's fake, really like that sound clip.. Well,
the new album from Empty Tremor is out now..and that excerpt you guys heard
from 2 years ago is a part of an instrumental piece called Y2K.. a cheesy
name i thought, but hey, it's good music. so show your support and get the
album =).. (I have to say I kinda like the demo a little better though)

    >Geh! So it is! OK, poll time, dear fellow readers. Do I
    >1) Go see JP and JR, or
    >2) go to my ten-year high school reunion?

Fuck high school reunions, man. The only fun about them is flaunting your
success in front of everyone who tormented you during those miserable
years. (Er...I may have revealed a bit too much, there). Go see JR and JP
instead. There'll be another reunion in another 15 years, no doubt. Go to
that one if you really feel the urge. :)

    >OK, you guys will probably all think I'm completely off for this,
    >but... am I the only one who reads "Kurt M Hampton" and thinks "Mike
    >Hampton" every single time?

Nope. Hampton's on my fantasy baseball team (and he's FINALLY starting to
justify my third-round pick of him too), so I see it every time too,
despite the fact that Kurt looks nothing like Mike Hampton does. :)

I was definitely not trying to "screw" anyone. That's what I'm actually
trying to prevent. :) Also know that I have absolutely no problem with
either Ryan or yourself - just Scarred Records (which I take as a separate
"entity" from the people who run it.) We definitely disagree on the topic
    of selling boots tho'. :)

    > True, but would you rather have a killer recording of it or a crappy
    > recording that sounds like it had been recorded in the back of the hall
    with
    > cheap equipment? Scarred produces quality products and charges for them.

This particular statement I really have a problem with. It's not like
boot-sellers have a monopoly on good sounding recordings. 99% of sources
are available to the general trading community if one takes long enough to
look. As I said, I have four of the five Xmas recordings and all sound very
good - not at all like they "had been recorded in the back of the hall with
cheap equipment." I've heard the MP3 sample of the Silent Man - it's very
similar to my copy even without remastering. <shrug> I imagine we have at
least some of the same sources. Most of those Xmas shows have been readily
available in trading circles since the week after they were played. It's
laughable to say that the people who sell boots are the only ones who can
come up with good copies, even if they offer money for the best source
(grrrr). The reason is that most tapers ARE actually in it for the
enjoyment of the music and are willing to spread the music feely to the fans
    (as it should be).

Waiting anxiously on Part 3.... :)

Hey, I know, long time no post, and now it's totally off topic. What do you
expect from someone like me, huh? :) (Sorry it's so long, but... :)

Now that I hopefully have attention/ire in my direction I have a simple
    question:

Are any of the DC/Baltimore area 'jammers drummers looking for a band? Do
any of you know any? We (Division) will be replacing our drummer in the near
future - he's actually leaving of his own accord in January, but it's never
    too early to start looking.

    What we have to offer:

    1. US recording deal (Progressive Arts, not a huge label but good
    distribution)
    2. Steady, high profile gigs w/national acts, and regional shows - playing
originals, with a cover or two thrown in.
    3. Currently in pre-production for our third album - the right person may
get to play on it, depending on the timing.
    4. Easily available quality recording studio, owned by one of the
    guitarists.
    5. Professional attitudes and gear.

Since I'm assuming some of you don't know anything about us, we're a fairly
straightforward metal band - two guitars, bass, vox, drums - that sounds
similar to Iced Earth colliding with Nevermore. Check out our site at
www.division-usa.com for soundfiles, and contact me at mike@division-usa.com
or my above address for more info. I recommend listening to the songs from
"Ascension", as they're more representative of where we are now.

We're looking for someone with chops - our music is more complicated than it
sounds - and the ability to know when to use them. We take a professional
attitude towards Division, and we'd like someone that handles things the
same way. Dedication is needed, as well, but we're all adults with lives,
too, so things are flexible. Double bass skills are essential, as listening
to the sound files will tell you. :) (well, we _are_ a power metal band)
Live experience would be nice, but isn't a must. We're serious about making
good music - and albums, for that matter - but we know we're not going to
get rich and be rock stars - we've all been around far too long to still
    have stars in our eyes.

Interested? Know someone that is? Get in touch! Even if you're not going to
be available for a while, we've obviously got time to work with.

(Carol, Jeff, Glenn, and everybody else that knows us, please keep this
low-key around the band. Brian knows we're looking, but it doesn't need to
be in his face all the time.)

Anyone interested in hearing us can check out our upcoming shows with
Testament on May 6th and Armored Saint on May 21st, both at Jaxx in
Springfield, VA. I'll be more than happy to meet up with any interested
parties to talk face-to-face, too, if so desired.

    Mike

That's a shame. I'm sorry to hear you wasted so much money (especially for
    analog cassettes - jeeze.) :)

I'm sure one of those "****"s was directed towards me (and yes, I know Scott
didn't say this). To set the record straight, I don't tape DT shows (though
I did awhile back - just three of them) because I don't have a stealth rig
anymore. Sold it in a fit of disappointment at DT for playing the same
setlist on all three shows I taped. :) (Of course, I have taped over 50
Widespread Panic shows and continue to do so.) This guy is making it sound
like people who trade don't tape, which is obviously assinine to anyone who
knows anything about taping. Check any "real" taping community - there's no
selling there. And "parasite?" Take a look at Lines in the Sand or the FTP
site I ran for a few months with about 30 shows from various bands on it -
enough said. I won't really discuss anything further about this guy's
comments except to say that he's pretty offbase and seems quite bitter about
something. The best part is that he's speaking of his "original releases"
(*scoff*) as if he were running some sort of legitimate business. :) That
post would be MUCH too easy to pick apart line-by-line, so I imagine it's
unnecessary for me to do so... Thanks for the good laugh... (Again, this
    isn't directed at Scott.)

See y'all when I get back from taping Panic tonight in scenic Statesboro,
Georgia. Maybe I'll try to sell it to Panic fans and see just how quickly
my ass gets kicked off the list (not before I get about 300 messages flaming
    me for trying it)... Hehe.

Assuming you mean Discipline, Three of a Perfect Pair, and Beat: Really?!? I think Discipline is brilliant, but Perfect Pair is just this side of unlistenable for me. I can't even watch the concert video from that tour. The music from that album (with the exception of the double-trio live version of the title track) seems so scattered to me. Almost as if they said, "How many random noises can we fit into one 4:30 song?" The ProjeKCts, as improv'ed as they are, seem more focused to me. Of course, YMMV.

    > Also, rumor has it that this might be Belew's last album with the band. > Which, of course, would be an enormous loss, but the way Crimson works, I > have trouble believing anything final about any of them, short of death, I > guess.

There's never a last with Crimson. I wouldn't be surprised if Greg Lake joins them again. :)

Metallica to Discuss Napster Suit in Web Chat Fans will get to grill Metallica about Napster lawsuit

    Napster Re-revisited

Metallica probably didn't envison becoming victims of an underground backlash after they filed suit against Napster on April 13. But the always fan-attentive metal men want to take out some time to explain themselves and counter accusations -- from fans and Napster-supporting artists like Limp Bizkit and Offspring -- that greed is the motivating factor in their case against Napster, the now infamous Internet music-swapping software company. Thus, at 8 p.m. (EST) on Tuesday, May 2, James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich and Jason Newsted will conduct a thirty-minute chat at both www.artistdirect.com/metallica and http://chat.yahoo.com to answer fans' questions and concerns about their recent legal tangles.

The chat will also give Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich a chance to address PayLars.com, a Web site that mockingly offers Metallica fans the opportunity to help the band recoup the money it's lost due to Napster. According to the site's creator August Nelson Inc., PayLars.com is giving "Metallica fans the chance to make a donation to the band to make up for all the revenue the band thinks it's losing to online MP3 trading."

According to a band statement, Metallica hope the chat will help them explain what they call "a very complicated issue with larger implications that our fans may not completely understand."

"We've always valued and respected our fans and wanted to discuss with them directly why we have brought this suit and answer their questions and address their concerns directly," said the statement.

I wrote an email to MP asking if he might like a copy of the HOB show recording I did and got a response the other day asking for me to send him one (how cool is it to receive a personal email from MP?). This got me to thinking about Jordan's stance on boot trading and I thought I'd write and ask him about his stance and whether he'd like a recording of the HOB show as well.

Here is what I got from him:

"I'd love to get a copy of that show. Thank you for thinking of me. Yes whenever possible I'd like to hear these things. My feeling is we can't STOP it so we might as well enjoy it! Hope it is a recording and of course as long as the people keep coming top our shows and checking out our CD's I have no problem with it."

I guess that settles the curiosity of Jordan's stance on bootlegs. At least, I'd never actually SEEN an official word on how he felt...

I'm sad enough to have looked; and although I'm normally as blind as a bat, I'm pretty sure that it was nestling away in there.

Incidentally, I was in a guitar shop on Birmingham earlier today, and their PA room had BMS playing through it. I was pretty impressed, and then HK came on next - flippin' 'eck, the whole disk? You betcha! I was well impressed, I'll be going back there!!

Do anyone know where I could possible buy a concert shirt from the recent tour (online,etc..). I saw the show in Atlanta a couple of months ago and had to make a choice: shirt vs. front row! They only had one stand selling items and they were terrible after the show. Couldn't risk a crappy place in line when the band came out so I passed. Would appreciate any help. Thanks.

hmmm...so you wanna play fingerstyle eh? good idea. i don't know of any web sites to help you with this. maybe bassplayer.com has something good for that. all i can say is that you might just want to develop your own technique. fingerstyle is fairly simple and slap just takes practice practice practice. hope that was of some help. peace out! heehee...

Hey- since the subject of bootlegs and trading has been hot on the jam as of late, can anyone in the know explain what the big differences are between pressed silver cd's and those blue tinted cdr's? Are cdr's prone to wearing out because they are burned as opposed to pressed? Are they more suceptable to noticable damage from scratches, etc. during playback? Which are the best quality (TDK, methinks)? Thanx, gang.

Well, the difference between pressed CDs and CD-Rs is only the durability. As for sound, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. The audio quality is almost exactly the same, and unless you can tell how different errors are affecting the playback (which I now know about, thanks to Al), you won't notice a difference audibly.

The difference in durability, though, is pretty noticable, but only if you intend to be using your CD player in ten or twenty years. The reason for this is because pressed CDs can last as long as fifty years, but CD-Rs only last about ten to fifteen years, due to the dye (or something) in the CD-R.

Jon should be locked in a room and forced to listen to Olias until he reclaims some of what he's forsaken... but that's just my opinion ;)

Actually, this is supposedly the difference between the "blue dye" CDRs (silver/blue or gold/green) and "silver/platinum dye" CDRs (silver/silver). Blues are supposed to last 10-30 years, depending on manufacturer (or, depending on the level of b.s. from the manu- facturer ;-) Platinums are supposed to be good for about 50 years. "Real" CDs are 50-100 years.

Of course, mistreating them shortens their lifetimes considerably. Don't leave them in your car CD changer on 100-degree summer days, or 30-below winter days (yes, I live in Minnesota). Also, don't leave them lying around in direct sunlight.

Also, because there's no "loss" involved in making digital copies, you can just re-duplicate your CDRs 10 years from now, and be good for another 10. At less than $1/disc, that's not a bad way to go about things. (Of course, finding a "basic" CD-burner 10 or 15 years from now might not be possible... seen any 5.25" floppy discs lately?)
