The Star People website is available online at http://www.erandyland.com/
.. come on, didn't any of you pick up their postcard at the shows?? :)

It's got information about "The Legend," their tour, audio files (8 full
songs including a few played in concert with DT), bios, etc.

Their music is pretty cool. No flames, please.

I've got the TSO CD, and I've got basically the same comments as you all. A
lot of little, "stupid" mistakes that you'd think they would have corrected
in the past year. For example, when they sing "Domine, Domine, Domine,
Domine" and do it double-speed for a measure, that just sounds like the
pianist (and composer?) didn't know what he was doing. Or, at one point, a
male singer's vibrato sounds just a little too wobbly, it makes the CD sound
like a warped cassette. There's way too much molto ritardando (that whole
    slow-it-down-and-end-on-the-next-to-last-note thing <g>). It's often very
difficult to hear the rest of the orchestra at all. And some of the songs
sound absolutely identical to songs on the past two albums -- it's just not
    very creative.

The album also has a lot more piano than their older albums. Quite a few of
the songs are piano ballads, featuring just vocals and piano. I suspect
there are two reasons for this. First, I believe this album was co-produced
by Robert Kinkel, one of their pianists, and that allowed him to have a lot
more say over how much piano was in there. Second, chances are they made
decent money from people buying the Piano/Vocal sheet music or playing it in
school concerts. It's a lot easier to make Piano/Vocal arrangements when
the original song had only piano and vocals, and I'm guessing they might
have been pandering to this audience segment.

Anyway, after I get past the first half of the album, I like the rest of it
a lot more. And of course, the mediocre performance here certainly isn't
gonna stop me from seeing them in concert or buying their next CD. The TSO
show in Chicago was absolutely wonderful -- my friends said it was the best
show they had ever seen. If they tour for "Beethoven," I'll still be first
in line to buy a ticket.

Your best 2 sources would be Bogie's site at dreamtheater.mit.edu and the
French fan club's web site - the URL is
    www.dtifc.com/yourmajesty/multimedia.html

I think it has info on the boot your looking for - happy hunting! :)

This mix up was due to a pressing error at the CD plant. The incorrect
discs were recalled, but there are still some of them floating around. A
girl emailed me about two months ago with a similar problem, and I
explained that it was a rarity. She decided to sell it on eBay, and it
ended up going for somewhere over $225. Not bad for a $13 investment. If
you still have this disc, you may want to try auctioning it off, or hang
onto it and hope that the value increases even more for collectors.

If you *do* still have it, please email me all the information you have on
it including SKU number and any identifying codes so that I can include
this information in the FAQ. You may also want to check out the store you
got it from and snag any more copies of this defective disc to make
    yourself some money.

This is wayyy later, but I just wanted to say one big WOOOOOOW!
Mr. Steve Vai kicked ass in Sofia. Bulgaria on 16-th April!

Geez, what a proffesional show man! The guy is unbeliavable. This was
the most intense experience in my life.
2 and a half hours of unearthly ecstasy.
Vai, not only playing like hell, he also turned out to be excelent
entertainer. Lemme hear it "Thank you father Zappa!" :)

Even when some obvious technical problems occuer in a middle of a song,
it seemed FUN, cool. You couldn't even say it was mistake.

Mike Kenelly, that guy is simply amazing. He actually played the keys of
Bangkok/Fire Garden suite!!! And his solo act was mindblowing. The
silent genious in the back. During the technical mess on stage he
started playing Zeppelin's "Communication Breakdown" riff accompanied by
the rest of the band. :) LOL, that was cool.
And the Van Halen "Jump" sequence was way too fun. :)

I kept hearing on the jam how good Mike Mangini was, but never really
got what's all the fuss about. After watching him with Vai .... WOW!
Very fast moves, seems like law of gravity and air pressure doesn't
apply to him damn it. :( With the speed he has I bet he can manage
playing the intro of Paradigm Shift on the bottom of the Dead Sea. :)
I think I heard the fastest double bass work in my life on this concert.
All I can say is ... JIBOOOOM.

Eric Sardinas, the opening act was ummmm, quite fun for an old bluesman
like me. But a guy named Johnny Winter did Eric's stuff some 20 years
ago. Nothing new, just a new American guitar cowboy show-off. The dude
learned his slide blues stuff very well, but it is already seen thing.
It was embarassing when he put the guitar on fire. LOL, I mean ...
    HELLOOOO, gimme something new pal.

Back to Vai again, the man has VERY strong stage presence. I couldn't
take my eyes off him, and there was nothing homosexual about it. :) His
whole statue, every move he makes is like a ..... damn communication
device this writing, I can't do it with words.

On the end I want to thank the almighty Bulgarian jammer "xxx" for being
with us all day long in Sofia. Ytsejam rules. :)

What's next? DT in Budapest, yay! I hate that 20 hours drive train
smell, but ... screaming my lungs out on "The Spirit Carries On" is
    worth all the pain. :)

I definately agree with the part that they share most of the time, and
there are differences in style for sure, but I think Kiko does a little bit
more of the solos. For example, Carolina IV (he plays the only thing thats
not harmony) , ZITO (he plays the part of the harmony by himself live), The
queen of the night, Freedom Call...

as always... another question from me :-))
At the end of Eyes of a Stranger on O:M, there are these voices that bang in
just after the music... at 6:14 minutes into the song. In my opinion, I hear
a word "redemption" pronounced, but according to some of my friends it's
something like "I remember..." or something other than "redemption". Anways,
can I get an answer on this one? Or at least some opinions? C'mon, please...
I've put money on this! :-))
Btw, Steve Vai's gig in Ljubljana, Slovenia was incredible... That was by
far the best concert I attended. So far, Mike Oldfield was "number one" but
Mr. Vai with his 2 and a half hours of playing has defeated Mr. Oldfield.
Anways, DT's in Ljubljana on 18th July... :-))). That's gonna be my first
(not last, I hope) DT concert... baptism of fire. I believe that Mr. Vai
won't hold the "numero uno" position for a long time... :-).

    Hey folks...

Just a note for folks who trade CDs. Never, never, never, NEVER trade
someone a CD made from an MP3 source unless that person knows about it
first. I just got (yet another) batch of CDs from a guy and half of the
    shows are obviously from MP3.

MP3 IS NOT CD QUALITY! To put it even more bluntly - MP3 sound quality
SUCKS compared to the real thing, especially at bitrates less than 256kbs
(or anything encoded with the Xing encoder).

I don't know how many different people have said this in the past on this
list, but some people don't seem to realize it. MP3 CDs are fine for
personal use, but NOT FOR TRADING. Someone even tried to trade me that '92
show from Lines in the Sand that I cleaned up from analog myself, put on CD,
and then made into MP3s. He claimed it was an all-digital source. This
show doesn't circulate on any digital media (only analog and the two CDs I
made for myself), so I knew he was trying to pull one over on me. But I
traded for the show anyway just to see and (believe it or not) it was the
copy I had put out for everyone on Lines in the Sand.

Please don't abuse other traders - put "From mp3" or something similar in
your boot list. If someone tried to trade a CD made from MP3s in a "real"
trading community (Widespread Panic, Dead, Phish, etc) you'd never be able
to make another trade again, and rightfully so.

Now, I wonder which is worse. Selling bootlegs (anyone want to tree that
new Scarred Records "release"?) or giving someone an MP3 source. Hmmmm....
    :-)

I started piano lessons nine months ago and on a lark I played the mp3
pianic (is there such a word? :-) version of Ytsejam for my teacher. She
was suitably impressed and asked which modern composer penned the piece. I
don't think she was quite as impressed though when I told her it was written
by a heavy metal rock quintet from Long Island, NY

Music snobbery aside, I'd *LOVE* to get the transcription. I'm sure it will
be many many many many many many many many millennia before I'm technically
adept enough to actually play it, but it would be fun to try :-) I'm
actually starting to find though that if I attempt a piece which I'm
sonically familiar with, I can often make surprising headway so there's
always hope... anyone else experience this?

I had a dream the other night where I was performing at one of my monthly
piano "recitals" (for lack of concert hall space, we hold them in peoples
living rooms) and off the cuff I decide to dispense with Minuet in G and rip
into Ytsejam. It was killer :-)

Anywho, if there's a paper version of YFP out there, I'd love to have it

    Anyone?

    Anyone?

    Rob

P.S. I'd also be very interested in corresponding with other budding
pianists out there to chat about technique and other practical aspects of
playing and such... feel free to drop me a line!

We should be able to come on here and say we like John Denver or Michael Jackson if we feel like it, and not fear insults from others. something, and they start singing this dumb song, and it cuts to a new
    scene.
Anyway, I'm not sure if I'm going nuts or what, but I could've sworn it was
the Galactic Cowboys. Anybody know if I'm right?

I watched the credits, and It said it was Ben Huggins, GC's singer, but I'm
not sure about the rest of the band, as it was on TV and I couldn't see the
credits very well. I love when that scene comes on, and I point out to
people: "yea, I saw that band. They're actually pretty good..."

    Hey all,
DWould anyone happen to know the chord progression that is used on the
Acoustic Dreams track "O Holy Night"?

My copy is very low quality, so figuring em out has been tough.

    Thanks all

Both Rafael and Kiko do lead work, but Kiko does most of it. If you
have the CD Holy Live, they're split into each side of the stereo
channel (I believe Kiko is on the left side, Rafael is on the right)
and MOST of the solos are done by Kiko (with the exception of the
last solo in ZITO, thats Rafael). You CAN hear the difference in
their sound though...Kiko uses legato a lot and his playing is a lot
more fluid all around than Rafael...look at the influences they list
too...if it sounds similar to Holdsworth, Gambale, or Morse, its
    probably Kiko.

Surprise, surprise. You mean, Microsoft bought a good product and
turned it to shit? Geez, that *never* happens. :)

That's just plain wrong. There's plenty that *can* be done. But
before the recent spate of DDoS attacks (the ones that brought down
Yahoo!, E*Trade, etc.), sysadmins 1) were too lazy to be diligent, and
    2) didn't see the need for paranoid diligence. (Now they're merely
    too lazy. :)

First thing you can do is uninstall all the proprietary software
you're running, and go open-source. Since the source code to the OS,
your web server, and everything else, is out there in the public, bugs
get seen -- and fixed -- ultra-quick. If someone finds a security
hole in MS IIS, you're SOL until MS deigns to issue a fix^H^H^Hservice
pack, and then charge you *again* for their mistake.

And probably a damn sight easier.

Once again, I disagree. Get a cable modem or DSL and a Linux box, and
all you pay for is high-speed, dedicated access to the Net, and your
hardware. (You're already paying for dialup; spring for the speed,
and all the software you need is free, secure, and reliable.)

    </rant>

My apologies if this post seems off-topic, but I know that a few of
you are sysadmins or something, so I know this info is fairly
    relelvant to someone.

Got mine last week, along with Spock's "Don't Try This At Home." Both highly recommended.

Nono, seriously, I think this is the right way... They share, don't know how much, but still.

Speaking of Transatlantic (which I'm listening to right now), I'm starting to really appreciate what MP said about Trewavas' bass playing. This is some tasty stuff. I'm completely uninitiated to Marillion's music. What should I pick up first so that I can enjoy Pete grooving like this? -d

If you're talking about the very end of the song, it's Nikki saying "I remember now" just like he did at the beginning of the cd.

Actually I think most of Marillion's stuff is pretty heavy on bass, especially the material from the Fish-era. As for which album to start on... that's a toughie. I would probably pick one of the Fish-era albums, though I like some of the new stuff as well. I got hooked on by Fugazi, though any of Script for a Jester's Tear, Misplaced Childhood or Clutching at Straws would probably work fine, since they're all excellent albums. I would probably wait with B-sides themselves (a collection of B-sides), since it's a bit uneven. If you wan't to try out some of the new stuff, Brave would probably be the best pick.

    Hope that helped, Erik

They were very entertaining at the DT show I went to! I laughed a few times and almost fell on my arse. I remember seeing Palpatine and Ibanez nearly dying from laughing.....i proly would never forget them if it hadnt been for DT's AMAZING performance that night. Although The SP had the most amazing female violinist/vocalist. i heard she plays with sheryl crow (or was it shania twain?) Personally, I think the Star People would be a cool band to have come play frat parties. Hmmmmmmmmm....
