    both:

    Anything from Marillion's 'Brave'
Carl Orff : 'O Fortuna' (could require some massive vocal backup)
Wavestar : 'Moonwind' (think Pink Floyd, but sparer)
Yes : 'The Gates of Delirium' (ok, so we'd be lucky if they played
    3 minutes of it)
Jon Anderson : Solid Space, Song of Search
Ozric Tentacles : 'Jurassic Shift', 'White Rhino Tea', 'Zaii!',
              'Thoughts for Dots'
Mancini : theme to 'The Pink Panther'
    The Sesame Street theme (*poke*)

I would have replied to this sooner, but I was in D.C. for two days covering
the protests. I learned that I prefer pepper spray to tear gas, not because
of the different levels of burning sensations, but because of how riot squads
    use them.

You see, folks, gas goes EVERYWHERE. A cloud of vapor is a long-term weapon
that hangs in the air and moves with the wind. It is indiscriminate,
affecting anarchists and photographers alike, and unfortunately it cannot be
"turned off" like a garden hose or light switch. Tear gas shells are usually
fired from a distance, at a group of targets the shooter can't clearly
    identify.

Pressurized liquid, on the other hand, can be aimed like a projectile. This
allows the shooter to select his targets before firing, giving him control
over the direction and duration of his assault. Since gravity affects flying
liquid more than gas, pepper spray is usually directed at close-range
targets. And from ten feet away, an officer can usually tell the difference
between a black/red anarchy flag and an Olympus camera.

    >> Established acts can't wait to get their mp3s out there since it's
    >> basically free promotion.

Chris attacked this one well, but I bring a new aspect. There is a difference
between "promotion" and "product." Several months ago, MTV played a
twenty-second preview for Alanis' new video (called "Thank You"). They only
showed viewers a glimpse of the video, and only played the beginning of the
song. THAT is promotion. Showing part of the whole is promotion. Playing one
song from an album of twelve songs is promotion of the album/band. If .mp3
files could only be thirty seconds long, then yes, they'd be excellent
"promotional" devices. Unfortunately .mp3 files can be as long as your
hard-drive will allow, which is far more than thirty seconds. The entire
"product" (i.e. the full song) can be encoded or acquired from someone else.

There is a difference between a movie preview and the full-length movie.
There is a difference between a page of a book and the entire book. Calling
mp3s "promotional" can only make sense if your logic is, "lesser quality
material is a preview of high-quality material, and therefore promotional." I
will admit that looking at a negative of a picture can be called a "preview"
of the final photograph, and a low-quality cassette dub of a band's demo tape
can be called "promotional." But if your ears get used to the .mp3 sound
quality, .mp3s are no longer "a taste of things to come" - everything sounds
that way if your music collection is entirely .mp3 and you don't care what
    the high-quality version sounds like.

Someone on this list has a habit of demanding hard facts and specific names.
He'll probably flame Chris for not naming the "major company." ;)

    > Because it's not just free promotion.

Exactly. It's not promotion if I hand you the cannister of pepper spray. It's
promotion if I blast you in the face, then wave the cannister at everyone
else while shouting "BACK UP!! GET BACK!! NOW!!"

Sarah McLachlan used Liquid Audio to promote "Surfacing." I had never seen
the Liquid Audio format before visiting Sarah's official website. What really
annoyed me was that I couldn't save the files after listening. Then I
realized Sarah was simply protecting her creations - letting her fans listen
    without actually giving anything away.

    > So what would these artists be achieving in freeing themselves of "evil
    > record labels" only to make NOTHING instead of something per album sold?

I use this argument all the time.

"Beck only gets a few cents for every album he sells through the label!
That's WRONG! I would GLADLY give Beck $15 for his album, but I CAN'T! This
way I can listen to his music without making the big executives rich!"

"So until Beck gets ALL the money, he will get NONE of the money. Instead of
giving him SOME of your money, you will give him NONE of your money. I'm sure
he appreciates the NOTHING you have given him in return for his music."

Luckily photographers can put "(c) Me Myself & I, Year X, All Rights
Reserved." on their photographs when the images go up on websites. If someone
removes that copyright, they get slammed with a 400% markup when the
photographer sues them for removal of trademark. It's fantastic that a
website owner can track who visits their website and what sections are being
    viewed.

As for musicians, well, they're kinda screwed. (shoulda picked the camera for
christmas but instead ya picked the guitar! ha ha! you're the next Steve Vai
but I got copyrights and you ain't got none! ha ha!)

    > I'll admit it: I listen to MP3s of CDs I don't own.

I have four .mp3s on my hard drive. One of them is Sublime's "What I Got." I
could listen to that song a thousand times and never tire of it. I use it as
    an alarm clock.

I have a question about the guest vocalists used on the last couple of TSO
releases. Is it just me or are some of the male vocalists reather
weak? Patti Russo is awesome on BLN but there are one or two male leads
who appear to my untrained ears to be lame. I think this contributes to
the overall "wussiness" of some of the ballads on these albums that I have
seen others comment on. Any thoughts?

The only songs that does not have 4/4 in the song are: 'Regression', and 'the Spirit Carries On', which are both in 6/8 or 3/8 (either way). Also 'Waiting For Sleep', even though it has no drums in it, it's all odd.

    << "Home" is all in 4/4, isn't it? I haven't checked, but I'd say it's probably THE~~>Home.... Fran >>

I believe 'Through Her Eyes' combined with 'Home' makes for the longest consecutive 4/4 (for a total of 17:13). And second place is the end of 'Voices' combined with 'The Silent Man' (for a total of 8:39).

Its an original.. it was done in the awake sessions i believe..and released with the silent man single. I absolutely LOVE this song. There used to be a version that they played live that had samples as verses, but then they recorded it as an instrumental.

A tv show about Nintendo games here in Mexico has tracks #1 and #8 of LTE 1 playing all the way in the background as the "hosts" talk about cheats and stuff like that...I think the intro of the show has track #1...

Also, referring to JLB vocal performance on the new single, I gotta admit that he's not up to his best; I've heard him sing a lot better in Turin. >>

It was the "Torini" show. dont even know if thats a city, all i know is it was in italy. there were banana peels and water bottles thrown at the band

No one expects the Spani... nah. you were expecting that.

    > How scary/good is this one compared to Heresie?

Well, it's the only UZ album I've got, so far. :) Saw it in one of the local record stores (not Cheapo Disc, for a change... CD Warehouse...), and picked it up. It's certainly good enough that I'll nab some of their other output at some time in the future.

What I've heard from others is that it's a little more "accessible" that their other output. It's still quite a ways out there, though. Certainly belongs on the Cuneiform label.

I guess I'd say it's complex/weird without sounding like it's going out of it's way to be.

Amongst some of the other RIO-type stuff I have, I'd say I like it less than Thinking Plague and Doctor Nerve; about as much as Bondage Fruit, the 5UUs, and U Totem; and more than Il Berlione and Towering Inferno. Just got TI, though. Might need time to grow on me...

Thanks! Although i dont really like the sampled version. Have you heard the studio one? I think its tons better at catching the emotion of the song..

The oddest thing happened to me today. I went to be a subject for a Psychology experiment (it's for extra credit for a class). The experimenter tells me that I will hear a passage, do an unrelated task, and then be asked to recall things from the passage. The passage starts with the voice of a girl, "There is unrest in the forest, there is trouble with the trees..." and she goes on to recite all the lyrics to Rush's song "The Trees." I tried to contain my surprise (and laughter!). Needless to say, I had no trouble remembering things from the "passage" (and probably threw off all the experimental data in the process). I guess the guy running the experiment thought the song was too obscure for anyone to know about! This just goes to show you that there are some prog rockers into psychological research! Maybe next time they'll use DT lyrics!

I know for a fact that Lars was never against someone taping a show and just trading it among fans. I do have a hard time believing any band, including Widespread Panic, would rather someone download an enire officially released album for free on MP3 rather than purchase the CD in a store. That is what I think to be at the heart of Metallica's lawsuit against Napster, and if I'm right, I fully support Metallica.
