Out of the songs i know I think PMU gets a bit funny around the time when JP does that fast lick,
but apart from that Id say its all 4/4. Another Day is all 4/4. Under a Glass Moon is 4/4 except
for the solo and a bit after the chorus. Afterlife is all 4/4. As someone said a lot of WDADU sounds
mostly 4/4 but I havent got through it yet. Plus a lot of stuff on FII is, like Hollow Years and I think
    Burning my Soul.
I was wondering if they did a whole song in only one odd time sig. I know Surrounded comes close
but it switches between 9/8 and 4/4.

Just a quick guess off the top of my head, and no research...I'd have to
say "Through Her Eyes" or "Another Day" whichever is a longer song.

Okay...I'm new heren (in fact, this is my first post), but I have to wonder how this guy puts up with the odor in the place where he's obviously stuck his head???

    > But then again, judging from the
    > tame, all-nerd crowd I observed at the 9:30 club show in February

Hmm...I was at that show. Never considered myself tame. Nerd? Maybe; I AM here talking to people in my computer about a band because I have no "real" friends to discuss DT or prog rock with. Guess that qualifies.

    >It's like you guys need to put down other bands to prove DT is worth
    > listening to.

Well, here I am, obviously a Metallica fan, sticking my neck out in this group of Metallica-haters, and you don't see me whining about those who don't agree with my musical tastes.

    > And by the way, in terms of both musicianship AND showmanship, the Dixie Dregs
    > blew Dream Theater away that night

Probably the only good point this guy has made...but for me it was because I EXPECTED Dream Theater to rock, which they did, and therefore they "met expectations." I had no idea what to expect from the Dregs, so I was pleasantly surprised by their outstanding performance - a tough act to follow. Don't know if I'd say "blew Dream Theater away" though. They were just both excellent in their own ways. Even the Star People were entertaining, in an endearing, retarded younger sister kind of way. I kept picturing the cast from 3rd Rock doing Priceline commercials with William Shatner...

    > Dream Theater just turns up the volume so loud that you can't hear James screech
    > out of key or hear how many notes Petrucci misses during the really fast stuff.
    > Once in a Livetime makes that glaringly obvious - once the volume is low, DT just
    > doesn't do it nearly as well live as they do in the stuido.

Has anyone else heard about this cool invention? I think they call them ear plugs or something...they're supposed to make loud things quiet, I think.

True, James screeches and misses the really high & loud stuff in live shows. But the volume doesn't hide that. And if Petrucci misses a note or two...well, I play guitar, and if I could hit 1,234,458 notes out of 1,234,460 notes per evening, I'd be pretty damned proud of myself. Who am I to be critical of any performer? To me, the fact that they have the guts to go out there and TRY something as ambitious as SFAM live is impressive in and of itself.

    > Enough from me. I'm outta here.

Thank God. I will sleep better tonight.

I think you guys are looking at the wrong albums. While Home is pretty
long (that's so far a total of around 18 minutes of straight 4/4 if you
consider Through Her Eyes into Home right towards the ending), isn't MOST
of WDADU in 4/4? Granted, Ytse Jam isn't, but most of the other songs
    are, if I'm not mistaken.

Go back and listen to WDADU. There's A LOT of odd time stuff on there...you
may be right about the songs near the end, as I don't listen to those much,
but there's a lot more odd time stuff on there than I originally thought.
It's just written very well, so it doesn't sound odd...I love those 4/4-12/8
    transitions on OAMOT...uh, yea..

Yeah Home is in 7/8 in some of parts of the outro and 19/16 as well. But
WDADU has a flurry of time meters all throughout just like any DT album, but
'Afterlife' comes close to being in common time except for a couple measures
of 5/4. I'm wondering if the 'Lines In the Sand-Take Away My Pain-Just Let
Me Breathe-Anna Lee' combination makes for a long streak of 4/4 maybe even
longer than 'THE-Home', we'll see, or maybe even 'Lie-LSOAD-Scarred'

I'm a doughnut, I've forgotten the name of the song
(Liquid Dreams?)...Anyway, is *that* a Chapman Stick? I
figured it was, because it has that weird sort of
squelchy sound to it. But I was messing around on a
Yamaha RBX (four string with humbuckers) striaght into an
amp, and it had exactly the same squelch factor.

So I should be asking: what is that squelch sound if not
    the stick?

    Me like!

I'm seriously planning on lowering myself by an octave
and a half, so I'm curious about these things. I was
going to get a Yamaha BB (or a Rickenbacker 4001 if my
Bank Manager's a friendly Chris Squire fan too) G5,
because I hate the way they look. So can I get that sound
from any bass? What the hell is it (not an effect, 'cos
this was stright into the amp).

    hi!
okay..someone posted some info on mIRC channels and when I realized how much
great rare stuff can be found using that piece of software i installed it...
and i've spent whole damn evening trying to figure out how to actually
DOWNLOAD files. But I didn't get it... I asked questions on help channels
but no-one asnwered. So, if there's a jammer who's into this kind of stuff
and who would be willing to enlighten a mIRC newbie, I'm all ears...
    please...
I know how to search for something but i don't know how to download it when
    i get the results...

sorry for a non-dt-related topic guys...

    thanx in advance

    Hey folks..

I'm looking for an MP3 of the "Falling Into a Change of Awake" medley
played on the recent European leg of the tour. If anyone can help me out
with this medley, or an entire Euro tour show, please reply via private
email. I'll be getting some of these shows on CD in awhile, but I'm
anxious to hear that medley. :) If someone helps me out I'll post what I
get on Lines in the Sand for everyone to grab. Thanks!

    Adam

JLMB is NOT all 4/4 - there's some crazy stuff going on in there... :)

Well, I don't really know if it is a mistake but in the 5 years in a
livetime video, during the intro of Metropolis it seems that John Petrucci's
finger slips on the strings at one time and his guitar makes that strange
noise. Also another funny moment is when Mike hits the mike stand during To
Live Forever and five minutes later the stand is miraculously back where it
    was.
The 5YIAL video is amazing, I notice new things everytime I watch it!
If anybody on this list doesn't have it yet, I say go get it!

I think you guys are looking at the wrong albums. While Home is pretty

of WDADU in 4/4? Granted, Ytse Jam isn't, but most of the other songs
    are, if I'm not mistaken.

    Uhhh ... hehe ...
    Mostly in 4/4 ?
Someone better go back and listen to it, methinks ...

I have to agree - it's very nice indeed. Up on a par with the Digibook
versions of 'Far Off Grace' and Luca Turilli's solo effort. These
digibooks are a huge improvement on the digipack or dodgypack
which seem to start falling apart after a month or so.

I agree - its by far the best english language rock mag at the moment.
Q and suchlike are full of indie stuff and Kerrapppppp! and Metal
Hamster are obsessed with the likes of Slipknot and Kittie.
Unfortunately the Classic Rock cover CD has been polluted with a
Slipknot track (a problem of being part of the same production house
as Metal Hamster - cross marketing sucks!)

Lacuna Coil have been playing the UK and Ireland over the last few days
following the release of their new (and rather excellent) new EP - Halflife.

They played an excellent set on Saturday to a few hundred souls here in
London on Saturday night and impressed the hell out of me (and Ashley as
well, I think). Christina Scabbia's voice was phenomenal - every bit as good
as on disk and she begins to rival Anneke (The Gathering) in my affections.
The set was quite short by todays standards (about 1hr 15mins including
encores) but very heavy and I can honestly say that the band gave their
all, so if you are a fan of 'Mandylion-period' The Gathering, give them a
listen. I much prefer Lacuna's new stuff to some of the dreary stuff on 'How
    to measure a Planet'

Their website can be found at http://lightning.prohosting.com/~lacuna/

Unfortunately I think that 'Halflife' EP only has a European release at
    present.

    Hey Jammers...

Someone mentioned Lines In The Sand being in 4/4 all the way thru...

I have to disagree as I can hear a strong 6/4 in some parts.

Space Dye Vest gets my vote for being longest in 4/4... I haven't heard
about any odd times in there....

It depends how you split the bars. I could say a piece was in 7/4 when it
was really, alternating 4/4 and 3/4, whether that's still "odd" is a mater
    of opinion.

Nightmare Cinema is now presumably over since Derek left and Jordan AFAIK
doesn't play guitar. However, do you think they might reincarnate it (hey,
the spirit carries on) in another form? The line-up could be:

    Jordan Rudess - vocals
    Mike Portnoy - guitar
    John Petrucci - bass
    John Myung - keys
    James LaBrie - drums

We know James played drums for 10+ years so he could do the drums, freeing
up the vocalist spot for Jordan, who presumably only plays keyboards.
Petrucci would go from one stringed instrument to the other and Portnoy can
probably tackle guitar. That leaves just Myung in the same spot as with NC,
but all others are changed. What do you think?

Jordan plays guitar, too. He also sang on his solo album "Listen".

    Yup.

    > That leaves just Myung in the same spot as with NC,

Myung should play the violin! :))
