    Hi yall, I'm a relatively new OM fan (I was 6 when it first came out) and therefore one who never got exposed to all those extra explanations from videos, libretto, or whatnot. So I was just wondering if there were anyone else who shared my point of view: the lyrics themselves in OM doesn't tell a damn thing about the story, does it? For the longest time, I couldn't make heads or tails of it. But thanks to you all, I'm finally getting it, I think.

    Smell ya later.

    well, i have a font called "flexture" i got from some DT site a while back. i think it may have even been from the official DT site. its the font of the FII album. and if it aint close enough to the original, i dont know what is. if you need to see a "fictional DT" site with some of this font on it, get a hold of me.

    Got my Transatlantic special edition CD today. I can honestly say that this is the most beautifully packaged CD I have ever seen. It was well worth the delays and the wait - the packaging is GORGEOUS.

    The latest edition of Classic Rock magazine here in the UK has an enormous five-page feature on Transatlantic, together with a fantastic review of the album (full 5 stars) and We All Need Some Light on the cover CD. You should all buy this magazine immediately.

    We All Need Some Light is the only song I've heard so far (I got the magazine the day before the album arrived), and it's really good. I'm quite happy.

    Yeah, i mean ..i dont think he wrote anything on the sava discs, since all is written by Jon and paul oneill (sp?) right? Thats why their sound remains constant throughout the years, because the creative force behind their sound has always been there.. (Jon and Paul) Now, i would stop listening to sava if Zak left, and jon took over vocals again, b/c personally i cant stand Jon's vocals for a whole album, now that ive been spoiled by Zak's.. odd huh?

    What a mistake it was to join this discussion group! I've never met such a group of musical snobs in all my life. I signed up with the intent to read about Dream Theater and maybe pick up some other prog rock info - instead all I read is bitching and moaning about how everything that is not progressive sucks (read the last or any other digest to see what I mean!). You guys need to take Dream Theater's advice and open your minds a little.

    I am surprised to find this forum so childish. But then again, judging from the tame, all-nerd crowd I observed at the 9:30 club show in February, I'm not surprised to hear such jibberish. Reminds me of the first (and last) D&D meeting I ever went to in the 80's. Get some lives. There are other bands. Dream Theater rocks - don't get me wrong - but I can't tolerate the intolerance in this group. It's like you guys need to put down other bands to prove DT is worth listening to.

    And by the way, in terms of both musicianship AND showmanship, the Dixie Dregs blew Dream Theater away that night, and I wasn't even a Dregs fan beforehand. Dream Theater just turns up the volume so loud that you can't hear James screech out of key or hear how many notes Petrucci misses during the really fast stuff. Once in a Livetime makes that glaringly obvious - once the volume is low, DT just doesn't do it nearly as well live as they do in the stuido.

    Enough from me. I'm outta here. -Bill

    Hi fellows, I've wondered for a long time about the number of copies sold of SFAM. Does anyone of you know how many copies have been sold, up to now, of that album? And what about the others (Awake, FII, IaW, etc)?

    Is there a way to know all the updated data about the sales of albums? I listen to many different kinds of music and every time I pick up some good stuff from almost unknown bands I wonder: "how many other people in the world have listened to this?"

    I mean, the sales of the new albums are the base for the "music industry"...so I think there should be a way (especially on internet) to find out the exact number of cd's sold by every group I'm interested in.

    I don't use to read magazine about music or stuff like that, so I've no idea about the reaction of fans to SFAM.

    I'll appreciate any kind of informations and suggestions. I'd prefer to receive private e-mails, but if you reckon that this is a subject interesting for the jam too then post them there.

    trading 20gig drives? 2000 albums? In my naivete, I didn't think people were that bad about mp3's. Maybe it's just because I believe in supporting the musicians/artists I admire in order to help them continue to do their thing. (not completely self-less, it means they've got another $18 worth of studio time to do the next album for my enjoyment)(hell, if I won the lottery,I'd buy DT enough studio time for the NEXT 6 records) or maybe it's because I'm one of those people who needs to have the real thing. Yeah, I've made copies of friend's cd's and d/l mp3's to tape, but I get the actual cd as soon as possible. Maybe I'm addicted to the opiates record companies mix into the ink used for liner notes? Someone (damn short term memory loss...)mentioned wishing to hear OFB do a Zappa instrumental. I agree it would be cool, but hearing James sing "Dirty Love" would be priceless. Actually, I'm kinda surprised MP hasn't talked the guys into it. "I need a beer , and it's titty squeezin' time" FZ

    Lots of good comments on this whole Metallica vs. Napster debate, from both sides of the fence. Seems to me, though, that there are a couple of major, central points to this argument, all of which no one has taken into consideration.

    I agree that it's silly to hold Napster liable for its customers' abuses of its product. If they hadn't invented the software, someone else would have.

    I agree that Metallica looks like a bunch of whiny capitalists as they complain about lost revenue.

    I agree that Metallica has every right to be pissed about people violating their copyrights. Copyrights are meant to protect the artists (however badly we think they suck) when they release a product.

    But let's analyze the situation a little more. First, these people who trade whole hard drives worth of mp3s probably would not shell out the cash for albums *anyway*. Five years ago, they probably spent comparable money on blank tapes. They're *going* to abuse the system. It's not because of mp3s, it's not because of Napster, and it's not because school gives them fast, free Internet access. It's because they don't respect music. They earn respect in their circle of friends based on the size of their music collection. Mp3's are prizes to be displayed, not works of art to be appreciated or respected. It's probably something akin to muggers comparing the wallets they've stolen, or something.

    Those of us who *do* respect music realize that mp3 is a tool to enhance the appreciation of music. We will download one or two tunes from a band, critique it for ourselves, and then decide to buy their album or not. In a sense, this helps new and struggling bands to make money. If one person decides to buy their CD after hearing a sample, then they win.

    Mp3 is also a win for those of us who are computer scientists. The perfect compression algorithm is, for us, the four-minute mile. Each step closer is a reaffirmation that collective intelligence will enable us to better understand our machines -- our passions -- thereby giving us a sense of accomplishment, control, and pride. Again, *someone* was going to invent mp3, if for no other reason, as a stepping stone to a higher truth (like, perhaps, the equality or inequality of P and NP).

    So, to sum up my own opinions: * Metallica has rights, and they are exercising their rights as copyright owners, but they are fighting the wrong fight.

    * Napster is not evil.

    * Mp3s are not evil.

    * Science is not evil.

    * Disrespectful and immoral people will always exist. Someone will always be around to abuse the wonderful creations of art and science. This is no reason to refuse to create, as the respectful and moral will always be greater in number and in voice.

    * The Right Thing will always pay off, and in the right way.

    Dream Theater is known for their elusive style and limitless compositions. This also includes a vast array of time signatures. So my question to all you hardcore jammers who like a good challenge, just like me, is what is the longest consecutive period of time on a DT album that is played in 4/4 time? (This doesn't include LTE or any other side projects) Give the song names and track times the 4/4 time signature occurs during. <For example: -Lie 5:30-Lifting Shadows Off a Dream 3:21->. Remember consecutive time.....

    "Home" is all in 4/4, isn't it? I haven't checked, but I'd say it's probably THE~~>Home.... Fran

    Totally off topic, but that's nothing new for me...I laugh every time someone equates cursing with lack of intelligence. Sure, if someone does nothing but curse, consistently, you may be on to something. But the fact that a person occasionally peppers their speech with some traditional invective has about zero correlation with their brainpower, as far as I'm concerned.

    Not to mention, being drunk tends to really bring out the foul language no matter how smart you are. ;)

    I like having the real thing too, but that isn't always possible. Well, it soon will be, so I can't understand why someone would want mp3s in lieu of getting the actual CD. mp3s work fine when you get them before a CD comes out, but after that people (I at least) start wanting the real thing-- the artwork, etc.

    Yo yo yo, Well I had a long post about the Dream thing, but Andrew C. said everything I did, no use in repeating it, like the guy who replied with half of the last jam. That sucked ass. Anyway I went and saw Kiss last night. Kiss was an awesome entertainment show, I can say I got my 40 bucks worth. Skid Row's new singer is ok, nothing great. More of a rougher voice than Sebastian Bach. Props to Snake Sabo for playing with a broken ankle, not just playing, moving all of the stage and stuff. It was cool to hear 18 and Life. One complaint, they didn't play anything form Subhuman Race. Thats understanable being no one even knows that CD is out. On to Nugent. For 30 seconds it was cool, then I noticed everything was being li synched or mocked played. Ted is cool, but I lost much respect for him. The cameras stayed up on his face half the time, it obvious he wasn't really singing. Plus there was a time when his mic almost fell off his ear, he went to fix it and was magically still playing guitar with no hands. nuff said. KISS: Holy shit, fire, blood, seven inch tongue, guitar on fire, Gene flying, Paul flying out into the middle of the arean to sing on this little stage set up etc etc. they will always be the kings of arena rock. I know they are a big money machine, but this show ruled. I was expecting maybe an hour frmo them, but they played for over two hours. I was like damn, how much longer can Paul Stanley do that little gay dance. When they played Rock N Roll all Night, I looked around at everyone, 25000+, and it made me realize just what this meant to a lot of people. Imagine DT doing one last tour (supposedly) for us. How would we be at the show? there was a lot of energy in all the drunk old people, adding to the fun. This show is something I won't forget. One complaint: Peter Criss is the most LIFELESS drummer I have ever seen.

    Here's another pathetic example of a guy who told me about d/l mp3's. He bragged about d/l 30 albums in one day, when I asked him if he would buy any originals, his reply, hell no, I don't have the money to buy them and they (the bands) don't need the money anyway'

    This kinda thing really pisses me off.

    Hi Everyone!=20 I just wanted to say something about those of you trying to persuade us that= =20 James=B4s vocals are bad or "out of key". You are wrong! Wrong, because it i= s=20 his stzyle of intonation you seem to misunderstand! Try to relax and ewnjoy=20 DT=B4s music as it is, because the way they do it, it is simply perfect! Thi= s=20 includes James. DT would not be the same without him! He does a good job!=20 So next time, think twice before slaying one of metal=B4s finest!=20 Your CT

    Nope, Home has a bit in 7/8 if I remember correctly, around the 11 minute mark.

    Wal*Mart if you want popular, mainstream CD's (Rush, Tull); Circuit City if you want something a little more obscure (DT, LTE, jazz stuff) My li'l bro' got me both LTE albums for xmas cuz they were so cheap!

    This is one of the most hilarious things I've read in a while.

    Nerds are childish as opposed to who? Well considering you complain about the 'tame' crowd am I believe you want there to be a bunch of body building, tattoo adorned, metal-heads (not that I have anything against that ;) ) up there trying to start mosh pits? Is that who you expected on this list (they are on here)? How is a 'tame' crowd more childish than a wild one?

    The now dearly departed poster goes on to make an empassioned plea for tolerance while damning all D&D players, and ever member of the Ytsejam, as having no lives. How poetic.

    The internet and MP3's are a great way for the burgeoning artist to peddle their wares to the public, free of the yoke imposed by the media pimps in corporate offices. It's too bad that there are so many users out there who are willing to abuse the privelidge of having free access to this material, and ultimately it *is* the artist that suffers, be it Billy Corgan or Billy Ocean. CD technology is around 20 years old now, why do we continually pay more for this tecnology? Because that is what the greedy me-monkeys high atop Mount Time/Warner/AOL decree. Those in Europe by and large have always paid close to double what we have paid in North America for recorded music. As opposed to bringing the prices down in Europe, the industry raises prices in North America to reflect the European market (something the Segram Co. vowed to do when they bought out Polygram two years ago). And yes, the artist still sees a whopping two cents per unit sold! I'd love to see MP3 piracy bring the music industry to it's knees, forcing the industry fat cats to re-evaluate their practise of blatantly screwing not only the artists they supposedly represent, but also the consumer that lays down way too much of his/her hard earned cash for their product.
