I just happened to notice the European tour dates for Planet X - seems to
be more of an intensive and detailed tour of Holland than anything else.

I don't think I will be able to make it down to the London show. :-(

I'm not sure, but this may have been a reference to me. If so, Bafu, please check your YtseJammer rolodex, as you really butchered my name. But that's okay. With a last name like yours, it must be tough to remember anyone else's. :)

Yes, Bafu, but it's a very SMALL place. We are few, but we must be strong. We must resist the constant temptation to color our hair a hideous shade of green or purple, adorn our bodies with ink borne of dirty needles, and poke holes in ourselves for ornamentation. We must resist. We must stand together, for our's is a worthy fight. The fight of the common, normal man.

Actually, this reminds me of something I wanted to ask of anyone else who was at Manchester - possibly the other shows too, I don't know. On a couple of songs (Home and BTL I'm sure of, can't remember any others) there was definitely some sort of processing on the vocals; I was wondering if maybe it was a pitch shifter or something? It was making James sound weird, almost like some sort of fucked-up Cradle of Filth thing. Anyone else notice that?
Oh, and if anyone has the URL for the MadTabber's Petrucci Files, I'd appreciate it, it's gone missing.

I'm sure somebody has posted this already, but, I just thought this was pretty funny. This is the UBL bio for DT...
--- Dream Theater Genre - Jazz/Jazz Vocal, Metal Elektra Records
Originally known as Majesty, the nucleus of the band is comprised of John Petrucci (guitar), John Myung (bass), Mike Portnoy (drums), who met at the Berklee School of music. Dream Theater's music is an interesting thrash-influenced brand of progressive rock. After being dropped by MCA following the failure of their 1989 debut album, vocalist
Charlie Dominici quit the band, and it appeared doubtful that they would
be able to make it. However, the band somehow broke through on MTV with an edited version of Images and Words' "Pull Me Under." Petrucci has been hailed as a guitar hero of the future, being one of the few technically proficient guitarists to emerge in the '90s. Among Dream Theater's other releases were 1995's Change of Seasons and When Dream and Day Unite . Once in a Livetime followed in 1998, trailed a year later by Scenes from a Memory . They don't really play that stick-driven instrumental part. As for the rest, mostly it's not a problem on a "regular" bass guitar. Myung uses some tapping on a few parts, but nothing spectacular.

I guess I'm not the only jammer with keen ears. I was watching my Heat playing the Knicks (boo hiss)on TV a few weeks ago. They were either coming back from half time or a time out, but very clearly in the backround you could hear the intro to Met pt1. That first tom hit was echoing all over the place. I haven't heard DT or LTE for traffic or anything around here, but glad to hear that some stations are actually updating their Surfing... era Satriani loops. ;) I did hear new Satch on that Ushaia show and LTE in the backround of something on TLC. Speaking of nature type stuff, (nice seque way, eh?) is it just me, or do other people REALLY want to see that australian idiot actually die ????? and for an australian, his accent sounds ridiculously fake. "Oi, mate. Never fondle the genitals of the saltwater croc. It's very dangerous and only an expert such as myself should SNAP!!!!!!GULP!!!BUURRRRPP!!!!!!!" Hope is the only thing that keeps me tuning in. That's my 2 cents, but do you think I could get change back?

How's the performance?? How's the sound quality?? How's the set list?? Is there any noticeable difference on the new songs??

Actually Chris, I want to go to Berklee because I'm interested in taking their Composition major. One of my life goals as a musician is to be able to compose classical music for orchestra and integrate it into my own progmetal music the way Andre Matos does with Angra, and he had stuided at a music college to learn to do that. Also, Berklee seems like a very openminded school and not a stuffy "PLAY CLASSICAL OR DIE" academy (hell, any music college that has a metal department is one that I want to go to :-), plus I really like the area and the school (the mugging thing doesnt scare me, you could just as easily be mugged attending Juliard or NYU).
Also, in my original post I never suggested that Berklee is what gave Dream Theater their musicianship, I only brought up the fact that they went there because I'd have thought that any musician into DT would have known they had gone there by now and was just informing him of the fact if he didnt know that already.

First, a question for everybody. I asked this before and got pointed to a great site. Anyone know any good sites for prog/metal mp3's? Is there one out there that lets you search by category? I'm trying to catch up on all this new prog so I can't really search for bands by name. Any help would be greatly appreciated to make me feel less behind the times. O.K. spur of the moment, I just thought of another question. (i'm wacky like that) Any info on Rush out there, besides that they're going into the studio this oct.? Is there a new site since N.M.S. seems to have died? O.K. just for fun, let's hear what covers you would like DT to play live. Can be serious, can be funny, maybe even both. Maybe Mike will see the suggestions and give the guys some ideas for that summer U.S. tour that I just KNOW they're planning right now(you are, aren't you? please!!!!!!!)or maybe he'll just get a chuckle out of it like we will. My humble suggestions: the theme to Scooby Doo, and "Natural Science" by Rush."Seasons in the Abyss" by Slayer would be pretty sweet too.

One of the local classic rocks stations around here routinely uses Steve Vai songs for the bockground music on commercials they produce for local businesses. I also heard a couple snippets from Merry Axemas vol 1 & 2 around Christmas time.

Ok, I've gone to http://www.afterforever.com and listened to the Sample Audio link and heard several of their songs.
For those who do not know about "After Forever" yet, they are a new rising band that sound similar to NIGHTWISH. The band plays moderate metal while the singer does Opera-type vocals like Nightwish. The singer is only 19 years old.
I started out kinda disappointed because their band isn't as heavy and tight as Nightwish, but the more songs I heard by them the more I got into it. Their CD comes out this month and I think I may make this purchase. It's not Nightwish, but it's a good alternative with similar sound.
Check them out - make up your own mind. But give them a listen...........

Hey all,
I'm back (at least for a while) in the jam, and not many things have changed (except for a new list server)...
For those who are really interested, I've been through a lot in the past year. in August '99 I joined the army (in Israel, where I come from, military service is compulsury) and was trained as an Anti-Aircraft warrior. In January 16th I had an accident during a military practice in which my 5th finger of my left hand got smashed. Since then I'm home enjoying the life of a civillian once more...
Anyhow, I have a couple of new songs I've made in the past year and a third coming soon, at http://www.geocities.com/yauzza/samples.html
My CD collection has just reached 100 CDs, which is not-so-bad for a 19-years old...
anyhows, have a great time,

I think you might want to check out the CDs where Anneke became the vocalist. I've actually never heard the "death" version of the band, as I'm not really into that vocal style (I like Opeth, though). Anyway, for The Gathering, I'd recommend "Nighttime Birds", then "Mandylion". These are the best two, with the first being one of the best CDs I've ever heard. I also like "How To Measure A Planet" but it's very different from their other work. They move away from their heavy sound to a more open, sometimes more electronic/techno/industrial sound. If this kind of music annoys you, you might want to steer clear of that CD. The band also has a live CD out called "Superheat" that I have not heard. I'd go with the studio stuff first. Hope this was helpful.

this isn't exactly music-related, but.... a while back someone mentioned they had created a SFaM skin for winamp. I went to the site and downloaded the first DT skin I could see, which was also a SFaM one. Now, it's not functioning.. that is, I can do all the things you normally would do to select a skin (it's even in there as an option!) but no skin appears on my winamp. Any of you techies/winamp freaks got any words of wisdom for me? I am dying to hear them!
