Hi there,
I always had the feeling that Spock's Beard concerts are a lot like
children's birthday parties and yesterday there actually *was* a little
kid on stage during one of the songs. Don't know who it was, I guess one
of Neal's children, but incidents like that capture the spirit of their
shows perfectly IMO. I don't think I've ever seen a supporting act have
so much fun, and I *know* that I've never had so much fun watching a
supporting act. Of course the set was much too short, but, well, even
their headlining shows are always too short, you know... The sound could
have been better, though.
Just one more thing: Who was that ugly guy under the Ace Frehley mask?
;-)
Most other bands would have *died* if they had to follow up on that
onslaught of happiness that the Beard brought upon the audience but
Dream Theater could keep up, although the tone of M2 is obviously
drastically different from the atmosphere of seeing SB live.
I was wondering why several people were commenting on John Petrucci's
guitar tone in recent posts, I mean what could be so impressive about
something like that...? Well I have to say, one of my favourite moments
of the evening was the opening riff of Beyond this Life. Good Lord,
there's only one word to describe my feelings at that moment, and that
word is: Aaaaaaarrrggghhh!
And what did they put in James' drink? I've never seen him so pumped up
before. IMO his singing was not totally flawless, but I don't give a
shit about perfection, I'd much rather see the people on stage enjoying
what they do, and James was more into the music than ever before. On
some occasions he let out some screams that had me thinking if Mike
(Portnoy) had force-fed him with (Mike) Patton records before the show.
I loved it!
That new medley was also really nice, especially that bastard child of
New Millenium and a slower Caught in a Web. Or maybe that was supposed
to point out how NM evolved from CIA9ITG (I didn't want to use that many
acronyms in this post, but there's no way in hell I'm gonna spell out
that whole song title, on the other hand this little remark is even
longer, ah nevermind) for the die hard fans. I could imagine that some
people weren't happy about the fact that apart from M2 there was not one
single song played in full, just the two looong medleys, but I think it
was rather fitting to give M2 the spotlight and close the show with a
little fast-forward (or rather fast-backward) retrospective look at the
band's career.
Speaking of looking at the band's career, that tourbook is really sweet,
but all the other merchandise was just too fucking expensive. That one
black shirt looked *really* cool, but *90* DM??? Thank God, I didn't
have that much money with me, I might have actually bought it in my
DT-show-induced euphoria...
What else? The video sequences had a bit too much of that rather cheap
shot-on-video look for my taste, and if they were supposed to give me
any new clues about M2's story (apart from the fact that it *really* is
the hypnotherapist who says "Open your eyes, Nicholas" at the very end),
I totally missed them. They weren't really bad though, and that whole
monitor-thing definitely was a good idea, especially for showing the
solos on the screens.
All in all, the whole evening did not disappoint me. That might not
sound like much, but considering how high my expectations were (getting
to see my two favourite bands on the same evening and all that), that's
saying a *lot*. I'm not even go into my usual
I'm-sick-of-hearing-PMU-but-it-still-was-the-song-that-was-received-the-
best-by-the-audience-so-I-can-totally-understand-why-they-still-keep-pla
ying-it-yadda-yadda-yadda-routine. That's how good it was! :-)
Wish me luck in finding that special edition of Transatlantic tomorrow,
and take care everybody,
Andreas

I'm way behind on my jams and am in the slow process of catching
up. Anyway, I noticed in a relatively recent jam (5412), someone
mentioned Tourniquet. One of my favourite heavier bands with
progressive tendencies. Very classically influenced. Not having
heard the new album (should be arriving soon), I suggest starting
with Psycho Surgery, which is probably their easiest album to get
into. My personal favourite so far is Pathogenic Ocular
Dissonance, their heaviest and most technical. Some of their later
albums go in a slightly more straightforward thrashy metal direction
(Vanishin Lessons, Crawl to China), but are still pretty decent.
Their new one (the name escapes me) is supposed to be similar to
Pathogenic..., though, so I'm anxious to hear it. They also
independently released an album of acoustic renditions of their
songs. I wouldn't really recommend their EP Carry the Wounded,
though. It's got some good moments (including a particularly
kickass cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well"), but it's not very
representational of their sound. Anyway, I've gone on way too long,
so I'll shut up now.

P.S. City of Lost Children is good, and Delicatessen is one of the
weirder, though interestingly good, movies I've seen.

I believe that the Purple Rain mp3 that you're talking about was recorded by
me. I had just traded with a guy in FL for a copy of a Petrucci guitar
clinic (held right before FII was released). JP played some of the new stuff
(LiTS, NM) as well as Purple Rain and the Sega Necromonicon tracks (recorded
those too, even though they are credited to someone else on LiTS) along with
a DAT for backing instruments. I took my Hi-Fi VCR and connected it directly
to my computer. Recorded the .wav's and converted them to MP3s. The Purple
Rain mp3 turned out very nice. However, I was very dissapointed in the
quality of the Necromonicon tracks (the backing DAT sounded pretty bad on
the video as well). The actual version of Purple Rain was released on a
guitar compilation album...but I haven't heard it yet. It really is a
beautiful translation of the Prince tune (which did originally have
lyrics/vocals). Anyway...this explains the lack of crowd noise (everyone is
very respectful of JP during the clinics), as well as why the background
instruments don't sound that great (they couldn't seem to get the DAT level
quite right). During this same time frame, I posted a transcription of all
the song explanations and Q/A sessions between the songs...I'll have to dig
through the archive to find that one.
Hope this answers your question.

On the subject of radio play, DC101 (In DC, duh) used to play Erotomania
during the background of their traffic reports, and they also played Home
(Both the edit and the whole thing!!) for a little while after it was
released. 97.9, or 98 rock, doesn't play DT much, but they play Rush
constantly and occasionally Crimson stuff.

Radiomafia in Finland plays Dream Theater occasionally. I've heard Strange
Deja vu twice, both Home and Home live once and Through Her Eyes one time.
They only played about 4 minutes of the live version of Home.

Maybe you should bother LISTENING to those mp3s at LITS before
claiming them to be yours. I made those files by directly extracting the
sound from the game's video files, this is not some clinic recording.

Since then I've added a few things to look less normal, such as a tattoo on
my face. It's a very straightforward design - a solid red four-cornered shape
that goes from my left eyebrow to my right eyebrow, to the right corner of my
jaw, to the left corner of my jaw, then back up to my left eyebrow. It's
really cool. Well okay, it's actually a square, a big red square that never
washes off. But it makes me look menacing.

It should have told you many things.
(1) Since I lived in a city named after a Saturday Night Live comedian, I was
also a comedian. HA HA HA HA.
(2) My dad decided to raise a family in a city named after a comedian. HA HA
HA.
(3) People could be infamous or wild without being as old or wealthy as you.
HA HA.
(4) You were in the wrong city, since I lived six miles north in a place

No no no, I came UP the stairs, from the basement. I remember lunging out of
the doorway and shouting "HELLOOOOO!!!" If someone came down the stairs, from
the upper level of the house, it was probably one of my younger siblings.

Of course! All people who post boring, normal-looking things on Ytsejam are
really unorthodox and wild-looking in real life! Just look at Brian Keys! ;)
Just remember, it was because our vacancy-seeking spokesman Trey looked so
scruffy and wild that we were REFUSED a hotel room. Normal-looking people

I recently read an article in a Swedish newspaper
(Aftonbladet) where the author, Frida Lindqvist, exposed
three popular artists using several backup vocalists, and
advanced computer software to enhance their voices to an
extent where any person concerned with music would question
the legitimacy of these artists. I get the feeling that
=93Autotune=94, =93Autopitch=94 and =93Formanten=94 (all mentioned in
the article) is used by most producers fabricating this kind
of music.
She starts out with =93Victoria Silvstedt=94. I don=92t know how
well known she is abroad, but American Jammers might know
her as =93Playmate of the year=94 (1996 or something).
Here are a couple of quotes from the article:
><=94It=92s not her voice you hear in =93Hello Hey=94, but a backup
singer that=92s not even mentioned in the liner notes.=94 ><
>< =93She obviously sung in the studio, but when the song was
completed, only the backup singer who did the overdubs
remained in the studio." ><
Another artist mentioned is =93A-Teens=94:
><=93A-Teens belongs to the category if artists that are very
reconstructed in the studio, with the help of autopitching
it sounds like the artist is [=85] (don=92t know the word), and
the voice becomes metallic, which you can clearly hear in
Mamma Mia. The real artists are not the ones on the stage,
but the techniques/technicians behind them.=94><
This is of course not really news, but I worry that this is
going to spread to people with actual talent. The question
is how long it=92ll be before James starts to =93autowhatever=94
his voice in computer programs and hire backup vocalists to
supplement his voice? We all know about the overdubs on the
=93live=94 albums, but I think that=92s acceptable as long as he
doesn=92t start to manipulate his voice in an artificial way.
I had a couple of cents lying around, and I thought it would
be interesting to hear your views about this. Maybe someone
has got information about what's really going on in the
studio when Dream Theater is recording?

Well if you notice, on both examples , theyre not real "artists". One is
a playmate , the other a teen girl pop band? Both i guess
manufactured... I dont think were going to see this anytime soon with
real talented people like KJLB , Tate and others. Maybe well see this
with Britney, or some other pop biznatches..not true singers..

You read right! My bad, they only did ACoS II, they used
PoA as the intro to it. And Jordan's much-vaunted one
board setup finally let him down - he had the strings for
the melody part, I think; but when the organ part
started, no keys anywhere. I swear I saw a look of panic
there for an instant!
Don't worry if you missed it, I wasn't especially happy
with it. The slowed down version of the CIaW chorus
grated, and it towards the end, it got heavy going to
follow where the hell they were going with it. Y'know,
I'm sure there was something else in there as
well...Possibly JLMB, 'cos it seemed to be a medley of 7-
string DT (possibly playing to the Korn fans real or
percived in the audience).
That said, it was really cool to hear Acid Rain, and New
Millennium too (which is something I never expected them
to air again, since it's really a Sherinian-Myung
composition.

Guys,
Saw DT at Nottingham Rock City, UK last Wednesday - and what a show...!
The guys were on top of their game and completely nailed SFAM (and a
fantastic encoure of medleys). Me, Wifey and good friend Pone were at the
front in the middle and, although it was pretty hectic there, got to see and
hear everything. The TV screens worked well especially when they showed the
feed from the little cameras they had dotted around. The "over the
shoulder" shots of MP ripping it up were particularly cool, as were Jordens
solos. Does anyone know the significance of the letters on Mikes tom
skins...? JPs camera was a waste of time though, because he always moved to
the front of the stage when he took a solo (this was cool for us though as
this meant he was right in front of us and only about 6 feet away).
Jorden is da man, without a doubt - very cool, his solo left everyone
gasping - great, great stuff. And James deserves a special mention - he's
working the crowd well and singing better than ever - top class. We hung
around outside after the show and got to meet everyone, I was patheticly
star struck and didn't say anything I wanted to. We managed things like
"you were great" and "thanks guys", ho hum - I'll keep my head next time.
All the guys were very approachable and chatted for a while - it was quite
cold and JP was wrapped up in a ski jacket, big thick gloves and wooly hat -
it looked like his mother had dressed him - really funny...!
MP recognised my name (which was nice) and James said that the reaction
in the UK had been great and they would definately be comming back. I also
heard a rumour that the boys had funded the trip to the UK themselves, I'm
not sure what this means - can anyone confirm or expand on this...? Anyway
I've raved enough, THANKS DT AND COME BACK TO THE UK SOON...!
Dave (a UK jammer).
