This happens to be way off topic, but this is the only mailing list I'm in, so I want to ask you the following question: Does the kid in the movie The Sixth Sense ever find out that Malcolm (the psychiatrist) was actually dead? I happen to think that the kid NEVER finds out that he was dead, but other people think that he did know. Any opinions?     Most people confuse 'overplaying' and 'using a lot of notes'. It's only overplaying when you're playing a lot of notes for no other purpose than playing a lot of notes. See LTE. See Yngwie. See most 70's fusion, as much as I love the stuff. The intro to OLT is a great example of using a lot of notes very tastefully IMO.

    31-st March 2000 was the day of the long-awaited concert of ANASTASIA and VLATKO STEFANOVSKI TRIO. It took place in the biggest playing fascility (Sajmishte). Ya had to find the biggest hall because both bands are the Macedonian bands legends - Vlatko Stefanovski, from the legendary group Leb i Sol, this time with his trio, and Anastasia. Both bands trademark is using elements of ancient Macedonian folklore music, rhtyhms etc.

    Anastasia is a miracle, a diamond that appeared in Macedonia, creating some of the most powerful, spiritual music I ever heard. Known also thruout the world, as writers of the soundtrack for the famous Macedonian movie - BEFORE THE RAIN.

    Bad thing is that their last album caught them experimenting with electronics, techno elements. The dark, moody, atmoshpheric, psychodelic elements are still there but electronis are prevailing. :(

    Whatever, it was concert not to be missed.

    First hit the stage 2 young boys playing traditional Mac., instrument - Macedonian bagpipe and kaval. When the first few notes came out of the bagpipe the crowd screamed. Our origin woke up and wanted to come out of our chests. :)))

    Then Anastasia came out, starting of with the first song from their last album. Yah, electronics, ... I wasn't very thrilled about it but OK, it was still cool to be exposed to the ethno elements of the music. They played 3, 4 songs from that last CD, one of those songs is very good, so it was a positive thing. Then, a change. A traditional 4 string instrument was brought on stage by Zlatko Origjanski, starting playing accompanied with a well known rhtyhm. Shouts of approval, it was Anastasia's famous song "On the Babylon river" (Na rekite Vavilonski). This is one scary, deep, psychodelic song. You just can't stand still on it. Ovation in the audience. The song finished, some keyboards effects mixed with great light show. The well known sound of the string isntrument started playing recognizable melody. The audince went completely nuts. Imagine someone coming directly into your face and shout with all his strenght. :) That's what it felt like. The song was maybe the best Anastasia song, from the BEFORE THE RAIN album called PASS OVER. I can't describe the feelings in these moments. Even this song alone was a reason enough to come to see Anastasia live. During the song everybody sang the lyrics. Uggh, when it comes to this genre of music words fail to describe the feeling. For a rock gig you can say "They rocked man", "It was a scullcrusher", "Balls 'n chunk", "what a blast" etc ... but what to say here? :) It's a transcending feeling, 'cause this is really deep music on a completely different level, music with another state of mind. You think I'm full of trash? OK, go ahead and find the BEFORE THE RAIN album.

    What was a news on this concert was the excellent light show. I can bet that it was the best light show in Macedonian concerts history. Very cool and very exciting for us who know the situation in Macedonia and don't even dream about such (important) details.

    They played one more song from their last album (a good song too) and finished.

    After some 15-20 minutes break Vlatko came out. "I hope you're ready for some GUITAR music!"

    The crowd: "YEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH" :)

    He introduced the band and they opened the gig with Vlatkovo Oro, from the Trio album, very rockin' stuff, great for opening. 3 more songs from the same album were played. There was a bass solo at this time too, the excellent Achek. They also played the first song from the Trio album "Igri bez granici" and guests on stage were Vlatko's daughter and 2 other school friends of her. :) The sang the "Kompanija, meso boranija" parts of the lyrics.

    He-he, very cool. Can you imagine a daughter of a living legend, being on stage with her dad on guitar, and thousands people on front of them. It must be a ... INTERESTING feeling. ;)

    Then Vlatko turned to the microphone and said: "This is usually the time of transition/change on our concerts. This is the time when we start playing music that we and people all around the world find magical, incredible, astonishing. Sometimes a music, rhythms so complex for outsiders, and so natural to all of us, we live with it in our everyday lifes. So lemme hear ya all, 1-2-3-1-2-1-2-1-2-3, 1-2-3-1-2-1-2-1-2-3..."

    And they blasted one by one the:

    7/8 oro Ne si go prodavaj Koljo ... Kalajdzisko Oro

    All traditional Macedonian songs covered by the Trio in hard rock, guitar manner. I thing of myself as good in music knowledge (;o) but I just can't boil down all these rhythms, so complex and twisted. And the weird thing - they sound OK. :)

    Later also some average songs were played, not so good, but the atmosphere was good enough. Both bands didn't play for quite long in Skopje, 2, 3 years maybe. So it was a reason enough for having electrified audience.

    Near the end of the concert Vlatko announced another special guest. "We're not the first nor last in this stuff, in music. One come, other go, they learn, steal from each other, they play together, there are some great new kids followinbg the footsteps of our generation. I'm very very happy to have the priviledge to welcome the next special guest on stage, I'm so glad he is still alive and well, since he was inspiration to all of us, a great pearl of the Macedonia music."

    So who is the guest damn it??? :)))))

    And he said his name!!! None other that the living legend of Macedonian folklore song, the heavenly voice named ALEKSANDAR SARIEVSKI. The crowd went nuts. Wow, I never heard such screams. :) He came out dressed in very colourful traditional clothes. Sarievski sang few traditional Mac. songs like Aber Dojde Donke, Uchi me majko karaj me, Zajdi zajdi jasno sonce ... Ecstasy! :) Anyone familiar with Balkan spirit can guess what the hall looked like. :)

    It was great. All the hall singing along with Sarievski. Some foreigners by our side were surprised of the reactions of the people. ;)

    I came on the concert having a nasty spring virus the day beofre - nose leaking, sore troat and all that. :( Being such sick wasn't so cool for concert like this.

    The obligatory headbanging on the trio music gave me a bad headache. :)

    So I left when it seemed like it was the end of the concert, although I knew they'll come out and play 2, 3 more songs. On the way out I heard the UFO song. Fine, almost metal song, but I couldn't stay. For that one I didn't care so much. BUT .... until I reached the car UFO finihsed. Then Vlatko started some Hendrix type of torturing the guitar, feedbacks, noise 'n all. OH NO!!! :( There is only one song they played like this in the past , and it was a Leb i Sol song "Like a cacao" (Kao Kakao). ;o( And yes, it was it, the main riff hit. I was pissed off but there was no point going all the way back. Luckily, after that the last 2 songs played (as I was told later) were not special. They were hits but not special. For Macedoninas reading this, the songs were "Chukni vo drvo" and "Skopje".

    OK, that would be all. The whole outlook of the concert was maybe the best in Macedonian history. Now, ... I didn't go on present pop stars (so called) concerts, but I doubt they were on higher level than this. There were also 2 big screens from both sides of the stage where you could see the action on stage much better. Occasionally they showed some artistic, short movies sequences for accompayining the music.

    It was really a spectacle concert.

    I have to disagree, yes, LTE can be considered overplaying, but it was supossed to be like that! An all out outlet for the guys to go nuts. The intro to OLT is supposed to be winding down from TDOE, and every instrument goes at it simple, restrained, perfect, but then Jordan has to go on and wank, as if he just *had* to get this quick "run" in there somewhere. I just see it as this: imagine the end of "Eve" , slow, simple, beautiful, imagine if instead of playing the simple melody JP plays at the end, he decided he had to end it with a fast flurry of notes, and THEN resolve the solo , with the last notes that we hear in the recording. Maybe it would sound cool, but it sounds MUCH better with the simple approach. I think JR just needs to lay back. We all know his technical abilities are far beyond excellent and virtuosic, its his taste (in what to play when to play it) , or in my case , lack thereof, that turns me off. Maybe he just wants to prove himself to the fans...i dont know..

    I wasn't thinking that he would write the lyrics! God, that would be a disaster. On the other hand though, I think that some of his pseudo-industrial sounding songs would really fit well with the feel of the movie.

    Fortunately, the law definately made some errors in this internet business. One of them is that the mp3's itself are very illegal and of course Napster is offering them via their servers, but they can never sue napster for anything since napster servers never have any mp3's on their servers! There is one setback to napster actually; picture this: You find a rare Dream Theater mp3 after several days/weeks/months of searching and your downloading it from someone. Suddenly your internet connection drops (or that someone's internet connection for that matter) .. After some swearing you reconnect en want to "resume" which is possible in Napster. Problem is..you have no way of connecting to that same server again.. napster does the pinging and just "throws" you on the server who happends to have the best ping at that moment..

    This most likely will be fixed soon in future napster versions if the maker thinks clearly; but in the meantime a friend of mine found a prog which allows you to connect to the server you want!

    Surf to http://www.napigator.com and download that.

    In addition to this, and to justify this message to the list, why not pick a server and start sharing rare/live/bootlogs/etcetc songs..?!

    I have people working on dubbing this show, I know for a fact I'll have a cd (or two) of the actual saved event from a t1 stream...we're trying to locate someone with a video card that has vid-out so I can dub it to a HI-FI tape. I'll keep everyone posted on how this turns out.

    We're playing with fire here! I wouldn't want to start a Shadow Gallery war again, but I would urge anyone interested in Shadow Gallery to listen before buying. Quite a few people do find the vocals abrasive (or cheesy)...Quite a few people like them. It's a love or hate kinda thing with SG vocals.

    True! Although Im on the other side of the scope, I find the vocalist (Mike Baker? was it?) to be very good, although sometimes his vocals sound too "dramatic", nevermind , i understand myself. What really turns me of about SG is the music itself. I find it corny and cheesy and trying too hard to be "prog". In any case, its all in the eye of the beholder, because i *love* Dali's Dilemma, and you could argue that they are a DT ripoff etc etc. Different strokes for different folks...in my case specifically, i have become bored with the prog scene lately, nothing ive heard has blown me away in a long time, Pain of salvation and Dali's Dilemma come close..but not quite the way as bands like Opeth and Anathema have kicked my ass lately. Hell, im going to catch fire witht his but i think Opeth's latest disc is more progressive than SFAM. Maybe not in the technical sense of prog, but in the sense of doing something completely original and brutally awesome.

    As for connecting to different servers...if you're on a mac there are a few different programs you can use in place of napster which are better designed and include this option. I'm sure there are similar things for the pc. Check out www.download.com, they have a number of things in this area.
