Oh, yeah. The new Enchant album is supposed to be out in October, too,
according to their website. :D Cool cover art, too. :)
Uh, yeah, I meant Enchant, not Tiles. My bad.
Why can't DT come to Seattle?...

Interesting that they had a "plan" to get the front row.
I didn't get in line at 1:30 just to let some idiots force me
out of my front row position. Well, it was a fun evening of
getting pushed around and squished into the front railing. :)
Eventually I learned to stand my ground and the guy who insisted
on leaning up against me stopped getting on my nerves.
Definitely an awesome show and worth the long wait in line and
the effort fending off the front-row intruders!
Nothing beats Petrucci playing 3 feet in front of you ! :)

Hey all,
Figured that I'd drop my $.02 worth on this one. You will find that
there are VERY few Dream Theater fans that are truly rude and unfriendly.
First off, are you sure that these DT fans were "true" DT fans? Meaning, are
these DT fans regulars? Are these DT fans going to their first DT show? Did
these people show up because this was the bar they usually party at and they
figured, "Why not listen to this band that we have never heard of and drink
lots of beer." then later in the set, "Hey, they play some heavy stuff.. lets
start a mosh-pit."? Is this YOUR first DT show? I can tell you that I am
above 10 shows myself (by far not as many as Skadz or other people on this
list) however, I can say for myself that I only had one bad experience at a
DT show and it was with people that I KNEW were not DT fans. The "typical"
DT fan is an educated, musical person who is probably a young professional or
a young musician (in awe with the band's ability). Please don't judge a bad
experience with bad fans seeing DT as ALL experiences at a DT show. Take it
easy! J

just my $.02......i've seen em 4 times, and was up against the stage for every show, right in front of labrie and petrucci- and i think the only show i got pushed around at was the toads place show in 1996......now, i'm female and about 100 pounds, so you'd think i would notice if there were fists and things flying about...but i honestly didnt notice anything major. maybe its the locales? i dunno......just my little insert for the day :o)

I'll try to field this one without being too technical...
"Hard Rock" is essentially just Rock -n- Roll turned up a notch. It uses all the components of 50's/60's rock with a bit harder edge. Blues chord progressions, use of 3rds in chords, and major chord progressions make up most hard rock. The tempo is upbeat but not blistering and the solos usually rely on pentatonic riffs.
Heavy Metal on the otherhand is Rock -n- Roll with some elements taken from the world of Classical Music. 3rds are often tossed out from the chords because of excessive distortion, the tone center is often minor, the tempo can range from a mild groove (Korn, etc) to blistering speed (see Slayer). Modal playing, appregios, and open string riffs make up the guitar aspect.
Hard Rock = AC/DC, Aerosmith, Guns -n- Roses, Van Halen, etc. Heavy Metal = Metallica, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Yngwie Malmsteen
In realted news...
***SPOILER WARNING*** ***SPOILER WARNING***
!!SET LIST INVOLVED!!
The Detroit show kicked ass! The band seemed to be enjoying themselves. and if they weren't, they did a hell of a job covering it up. Lots of pointing at the crowd from JP while he played with one hand (bastard), and James had a lot of crowd interaction as well. The crowd was pretty into the show, though I felt they should have given the band more during ACOS -- most people were just standing there!
The only thing I could have asked for were the unaccompanied solos from JP/MP/JR, but other than that they played a bitchin' high energy show!
What I want to know is.. what was the music they were playing before DT came on? They had a satirical version of PMU called "Pull My Finger" and then a swing version of LITS followed by a piano only Ytse Jam. Anyone?

I agree in disagreeing. IMO DWOT is SX's greatest cd. Followed closely by TiO, SX, DamnGame. From what I've heard, V is gonna be pretty damn good, too. Can't wait for the European release.
On the fan-thread: IMO you're asking for some pushing and shoving if you put yourself right up in front of the stage. That's why I always stand in the back, preferably on the balcony and just enjoy the music.
On the arpeggiator thread that I started a few weeks back: I found a wee little(~800K) piece of software called Technotoys Arp-x8. It receives midi-data from my keyb. "arpeggiates" and sends the signals back to the keyb. It's great! It's just not all that practical to bring my computer for every gig I play. Not to mention every practice session... It kinda made me think that if you can squeeze an arpeggiator function down to ~800K, it shouldn't be impossible to squeeze it into some little box that'd be much more mobile. Oh well...

I hope I don't die in a plane crash on the way there.

I've got a fun new Nokia 8210 which my teeny little mind is very excited with, and need to install lots of DTC ringtones (AD, NM especially) for various callers. I'm a bit of a newbie to Nokring and such, and would appreciate some handholding from Someone Who Knows. On my old Ericsson GH688 you could programme the notes right in; it seems to be much more difficult with these new things. And I'm totally lost with all the infra-red toing and froing between the phone, SMS messages back and forth, etc. needed to get the thing installed.

Any DT track suggestions for good ring tones (much as I love things like the chorus to PMU, it would sound pretty boring on a mobile phone)?

The show last night at the Fillmore in Denver was kick-ass! The crowd was energectic, and, when i got there at 6:45 for a 8pm show, was packed!
Spocks Beard- Man that guy sure can sing! I don't know what his name is, but he's got such a wonderful voice! They were really tight in typical spocks beard fashion, played a lot of stuff off "V", and some older stuff, then portnoy came out in a gene simons mask, and played the drums on some songs...pretty cool
Dream Theater-- this was my 7th show since '93 tour, and they were tighter than ever, and were in high spirits! Petrucci had 7 guitars...5 EB 6 strings, 1EB 7 string, and an ibanez for backup. The band had video cameras mounted on the mic stands that gave really neat presentations of their abilities! The highlight was the entire COS as the encore...man what a show...2hrs 45 mins of pure bliss. Lot of jamers there last night, all exchanging new music names. I heard there will be a DVD recording at the last show in New York.....
GO SEE IT!!!
