What's up guys? Everyone (in the U.S.) keeps saying they can't wait for the
new Symphony X and I'm thinking they probably don't know that the Japanese
release is IN STOCK right now at www.sentinelsteel.com for a mere $22.00!!!
Shipping within the U.S. is only $1.50!

I ordered it last week and it arrived today. Seeing as how it's going to be
another month and a half before the domestic release and also, seeing as how
the band gets a bigger cut of the profit from Japanese releases, it makes
SOOOOOO much sense to just order it now and pay the extra 5-10 bucks.

Also, not to get TOO far into it, but Metal Blade is basically giving Symphony
X a raw deal on this album. They're doing jack shit to promote it and they're
actively doing everything they can to stop the import of the Japanese release
into the states! I have no idea what Metal Blade is thinking because the album
is obviously DONE. Release the damn thing, why don't ya?

On that aspect alone, it makes me glad I'm not buying the album from Metal
    Blade.

Okay, after all that I bet you're wondering how the album is??? Let's just say
that I'm using my only still-usable appendage to type this e-mail. All other
parts of my body have been literally "blown away". Guys, SX is in TOP FORM on
this one and I'm only through the 2nd track! The mp3's do NOT do this album
    justice (and they ruled anyway!!!).

I have to agree that the people that mosh or get rough are probably just off
work that night and stumbled by to check it out. At $20 a ticket, it is
worth a shot to them. There was a little moshing in Cinci. It lasted about
5 mins, I think those guys got shoved to the back. :)

As for the front row controversy...I missed the opening band and couldn't
get there early because of work and due to the fact that the show was 2
hours away. I(and 3 others) started out about 20 ft. from the stage. Not
bad, perfectly satisfactory. But a friend of mine was determined to get me
in the front row since it is my favorite band.(none of the others are fans)
But we never pushed in front of anyone that wouldn't let us, we always asked
first. The majority were cool with it. We got about 10 ft. closer this
way, but ended going around and climbing some stairs to get right on the
front rail next to the right side of the stage. Being that the speakers
were right there the people that were up there didn't mind.

-lastly Symphony X's DWOT blows away TiO, IMO of course.

    Hey,
The Chicago show was awesome. This was the best of the four shows I've seen
them at. It was the loudest stuff I've ever heard. My ears were ringing for
days. JP was almost too loud during his solo. I do believe that his guitar
overshadowed much of JL's vocals. This concert once again proved how great
JR really is. He has such quick fingers. The set list was a great mix of
all the albums. I'm already waiting for the next concert. The crowd was
pretty laid back compared to the other concerts they have had here. Maybe it
was the Thursday nite crowd. By & far the best they have been. I think the
set list is correct for the most part. I don't think I missed any songs. If
so, throw them in too. Thanks DT for another outstanding evening.

Acos made the evinging for me. I'm glad they mixed the album up a lot. A
little from each and none from WD&DU. I could have heard YTSEJAM though. Was
that CiaW/NM mix the Caught in Alice's Nine Inch Tool Garden everyone was
talking about? It was so very cool to hear that.
    Anyway, it was outstanding.

Yes, although Russell Allen's Japanese accent does leave something to be
desired. I think they should have got a native Japanese speaker to sing on
    the import version.

(No disrespect to Russell - he's still one of my favourite vocalists.)

I dont know about replacing stereo, but at least for movie viewing, DVD with 5.1 surround and/or DTS : IS DA SHIT. As DVD keeps becoming bigger and bigger and more music video releases are done in DVD ( like metallica's last, and the possible future DT one) listening to our favorite artists in 2 channel stereo will not be the same ... thats of course IMO.. i can only imagine a *good* quality DT dvd with 5.1 sound *DROOL* As for VHS, DT or DT related releases are the only things keeping me buying them.. my other reason, (Xfiles box setS) are now being released on DVD..so..one less reason for me to buy VHS tapes.. (actually they are releasing full seasons of the xfiles (all 20something episodes and then some.., on dvd box sets, if anyone cares)

I'll take this one. Look out 'cause you've touched my happy spot :-) I doubt that DTS will replace normal stereo, however, there is obviously a growing trend toward multi-channel audio largely due to the push from the "home theater" market. DTS has historically been 'late' arriving to the dance - so to speak. They lost out to Dolby Digital (DD, aka AC-3) when it came to the DVD-Video standard audio format, didn't provide sufficient data reduction for Hi-Def TV, and also couldn't get their shit together in time for the DVD-Audio working group decision in time to be selected for that format (MLP - Meridian Lossless Packing was the standard data format chosen for DVD-Audio). Bottom line is that any new audio standard will probably include multi-channel audio but also be backward compatible with 2-channel systems (just like DD is now). One of the issues being worked out is whether or not to make disks that include both the old CD format and the new format on the same disk (using different layers) so that stores don't have to keep double stock. Another option would be to make players that can play both types of disks like they did with DVD players (probably what will happen). Also, Sony's offering on next-generation audio, Super-Audio-CD (SACD), is a high resolution audio format which is still 2-channel (obviously, not everyone believes multi-channel is the be-all, end-all for music reproduction in the home).

To answer your questions directly, IMHO:

o 2-channel stereo is still sufficient for audio reproduction.

o A new player (CD or other) may or may not be needed in the future (not in the next few years anyway) to play the new audio format- unknown at this time.

o No, you will always be able to get away with just 2 speakers. Three speakers will provide a wider listening area due to the center-channels speaker's ability to hold a "center image" when not seated directly between the L-R speakers. Rear speakers, in a 5 speaker music configuration, are meant to add ambience (although I'm sure there will be plenty of goofy sound engineers who will do stupid shit like mixing instruments into the rear speakers to make it sound like you are surrounded by players or swirl the sound field around as an effect - yuck!). Personally, I love watching DVD movies on my DD Home Theater system and think having 6-speakers (5-channels plus subwoofer) is da bomb!

o The bigger the room, the bigger the speakers that are required to produce the same volume level, and the more power required to drive them. Small rooms require smaller speakers, however, small rooms offer poor (not flat) bass frequency response (i.e., lots of big peaks and nulls at various frequencies and physical locations throughout the room). Big rooms tend to distribute them over a broader frequency range and pack the modes more closely together which results in a smoother bass frequency response :-) Bigger is Better! There is lots more on this subject as far as ideal room dimensions (the "Golden Rectangle") and so on and so forth - *yawn* - I'm even boring myself now!

Here's an idea - get good headphones! ;-)

Will DTS replace your normal stereo setup? Not exactly. You will have to buy some sort of DTS decoder to plug into your system, or a new receiver/amp that has it built in. You'll probably still listen to music on the regular stereo mode, as most music is not encoded for DTS. There are a few music DTS discs out there, the main one being the first Toy Matinee CD.

Yes, you will need to get more speakers. A normal setup are front left and right, center, rear left and right, and a subwoofer. For watching TV/DVDs, there is nothing better.

As far as speaker systems go, I'll just offer up what I own: Definitive Technologies. When we decided to replace our old system almost two years ago, we spent a lot of time driving around to various places trying out different speaker setups. Out of everything we listened to, these speakers were easily the best we heard in the under $2000 category. I'd recommend to anyone to check out these speakers if they're looking to replace their old ones, or are setting up a home surround system for the first time.

Also, be sure to take material that is familiar with you when you go to check out speakers. We took along various CDs (Symphony X, Vanden Plas, Marillion) and some DVDs that we were familiar with how they were supposed to sound. I'm not testing speakers with some Top 40 crap that won't sound good to me know matter how good the system is. Plus, it's fun to blast stuff like Ocean Machine in a store. Keeps people out of the room, anyway.

A blurb from the Philadelphia Inquirer's Weekend section for 08/11/00:

    "Metal Weekend

In this, an accidental two-day gathering of heavy metal marauders whose best works are way behind them, it's only fair to say that these men are preaching to the long-ago converted and that we should be lucky it's all happening to someone else. Sure, Iron Maiden may still sing of a 'Brave New World' (Columbia), but the newness of the rough-hewn British band stopped in 1982 with its classic clatter of 'The Number of the Beast'. The Washington-state grown Queensryche took up where Iron Maiden left off. Both Anthrax and Megadeth looked primed in the mid-'80s to take over Metallica's thrash metal throne. But the groups seemed content with remaining the princes of speedmetal and never the kings. This leaves Motley Crue, who, despite having a new CD - 'New Tattoo' (Beyond) - and despite losing Tommy Lee, should still be arrested for continuing on after 1983's 'Shout at the Devil'.

It's followed by information on how to go about getting tickets to the two shows. Some promotion, huh?

You have to wonder why they get the most biased people possible to write stuff like this. I'm not necessarily saying you need to get a straight-up metalhead to write columns on metal, but at least someone who's not going to trash the bands because they don't the genre from the get-go. This isn't supposed to be a criticism column, just information on what's going on during the weekend. Imagine if your TV newscasters gave overly biased current events reports:

"Some guy was shot and killed today on Chestnut St, blah blah blah. And you know what? Nobody cares. Death is so played out!"

    Hi..

Well.. It's a bit tricky, actually. It's not yet available on CDNow or Amazon, but the label management tells me it should be soon. The limited edition digipack is out of print, and the normal version is not yet in stores.. Probably the best way to get the album is to contact the label directly, at www.angular-records.com (or was it .de). When the print run of the normal version is complete, Angular Records (or actually the sub-label RectAngular) is going to start some kind of an advertising campaign in Germany and probably some other European countries as well. Rest assured that I will keep the website up to date whenever I hear anything new. And probably mention some things here too... =)

Oh, if the label can't help you, email me at wt@nic.fi and I'll see what I can do.

Ain't that the truth. More people die everyday of natural causes than accidents or murders and which one gets the most press? :)

Take this Russian sub for example? Has anyone really asked the question as to whether the sub is really down there? Has anyone seen it? I bet it's halfway to the Atlantic US seaboard right now with a payload of nuclear warheads. :p

Don't look at me like I'm stupid. -- KorgX3 should be praised for his forward-thinking.

Damn. Seems like I wrote too fast. I did some checking around. Apparently the CD (that is, Tunnelvision - While the World Awaits) is available, or at least listed, on some mailorder websites. In USA, it can be ordered through http://pendragonusa.com and in Germany, http://www.paengg.de has it listed. Other distributors can be found at http://www.angular-records.com/europe.htm , the distributor list for Angular. I have no idea of the real availability, but at least in Finland it's sold out.
