ps. saw Neil Young at Jones Beach on Thursday. Words can't describe how
amazing. Wish I could see another show of his tour. Go if you can. Jones
Beach was as great as ever. I'd be willing to pay TOO much to see Dream
Theater play a full show there. Someday or am I dreaming?

Jag Panzer definitely played, and they were definitely a huge joke. I
haven't seen cheese that thick since I left behind good ol chicago pizza
ten years ago. Jeeeeeeesus christ. And aside from being cartoons on stage,
the music was painfully, painfully standard. I almost fell down laughing
when the person I was standing with made a crack about the singer's
Halford-wannabe act coming off more like the Fonz.

I think there's 37 images at the moment, most of them are 3d-rendered, and they're available in four different resolutions, all in high quality jpeg.

National pride is the LAST thing that any country needs. National pride has no useful function. It may make people feel better about themselves, but it does so at the expense of others, with no realistic productive value. Have pride in yourself because you do things right. Don't have pride in your country because it has a bigger collective infected dick than another.

Wow, I totally get where you are coming from here! Even when the cold war was still on I never felt a loathing for the citizens or 'common man' of the opposing side because I felt that what the government did was beyond their control. On the other hand we here in the US have the opportunity to have a small influence on the government but the vast majority don't bother. Why is that? I think most of us feel that the government is going to do what ever it wants, 'in the best interest of the people' no matter how hard we try to change that. There is no perfect form of government and that sucks!

Hehehe that's a new topic for this list, but a pretty fucking old one for this planet.
Does anyone else feel sort of disenfranchised from their government or their country? It conjures a lot of immediate reactions when I read a post like the pseudo threat from that Russian jammer. I laugh, because I have the false sense of security fostered by living in the most powerful nation on earth, during the height of its power and the low-point of Russian power... but I stop laughing when I remember that technology (which ironically bridges both sides of the gap, in web communities like this) has eliminated the need for an ungodly army with devastating toys... all it's going to take is a suitcase nuke or chemical/biological weapons (which we all must believe that all global powers have) and that's the end for everyone... even our chilly jammer friends in Antarctica. I hope I get a chance to see the Great Wall before China lets loose a slew of missiles with American flags painted on them (why bother to change the outward aesthetics, when we know where they got the schematics!) It makes me angry and sad simultaneously that we're not all wise enough to recognize that none of us, free nation or not, have any immediate or direct say in what is and what has been (anyone familiar with our Constitution knows that this is why we call it a democratic REPUBLIC, and not just a "Democracy"). Read Tocqueville and see why we're fucked no matter who "we" are. :) If the American people are responsible for the state of the world, why does everyone get pissed off when we police it? And why would one assign blame to the mindless mass populace of any nation... if we Americans were in control of our country our federal government wouldn't be writing laws that our nation's defining documents expressly leave to the individual states to arbitrate. (I don't know if I should have started this post off with "I don't want to go off on a rant here, but" or if I should be working on designing my own flag and saving up for some land in Montana) The state of society in Russia is not a result of nor a responsibility of the average American Ytsejammer, and the same goes for the Russian Ytsejammer. I don't even believe that American international affairs are the responsibility of the American people anymore. That's what we have a CIA for (wait... why DO we have a CIA? Oh yeah, to unsettle Russian Ytsejammers!) The Russian anti-American sentiment is a result of ignorance and self loathing, and an unwillingness to take responsibility for oneself, just as the American complacency, ignorance, and general lack of empathy is why we look around and see a nation of egotistical idiots who care more about football or dancing or whatever than about 100 guys (our own age) who get the honor of biting it in a body of water that most of us couldn't even locate on a map (stories of a local school bus strike took precedence over the story of the Russian sub here. Priorities.) Why not point some of that Russian anti-American sentiment towards your own nation and fix whatever problem exists that let those dudes sit underwater for a week before getting help? I don't have time to really care about political threats on a Dream Theater mailing list. I think it's lunacy. Blow up the world... go ahead... someone's got to do it. But don't ask me to take responsibility for the way you feel about "my" country. And no, I'm not paying reparations for slavery either. It's never going to be a perfect world... anyone up for colonizing Mars? We could carve a giant Majesty logo on it and govern the planet based on lyrics from DT songs... it'll be great!
This post should not exist. Come and get me Skadz.

<posting before coffee> Or their planetary society. We now have a de-facto planetary proto-government, albeit it's still emerging from the confluence of decisions by the governments of all the nation-states. Anyway, any system of government (emerging, or emergent) is bound to NOT represent the interests and views of an appreciable fraction of Earth's population. Which is now at 6 billion.. it's just too many.

I have to agree with Chris bigtime there. Our own governments are the bane of our own existance nowdays. It's sad how too many people are deluded to concede that "well, I don't care if they make laws against it because I'll never do it anyway." As long as the majority isn't concerned, people's rights are limited more and more. One of these days, one of your rights will be restricted simply because it wasn't a "national concern." Since when does the nation matter? I thought freedom was to the individual, not the overall clusterfuck of individuals.
In a truly free country, there should be no government right? Of course not, but anarchy isn't generally comfortable, either. I agree with everyone else we do need >some< government. We need a national defense. We need very basic laws protecting the rights of the individuals. We need a means to enforce the laws to protect those rights.
The problem with America's initial government plan, however, is that America was very small, had a low population, and practically no technology when it began. The Founding Fathers had the right idea, but I don't think they expected the US to become so large and out of balance as it is now. Now we have overpopulated regions of the country largely dominant on matters of national importance and other smaller regions of the country end up being forced to conform to very non-traditional (and imo, unacceptable) ideals. It's the new idea of "what's right for one is right for all."
It's sad the way our own government that conceives laws to supposedly protect us also abuses loopholes in its own laws to gain more power. Currently, there is a loophole in some IRS document that is allowing the Senate to pass a bill that will allow the IRS to charge a $50 tax on all gun purchases AND issue an annuity tax on a person's federal income tax. What's more, this law will not be required to pass through the House. All that needs to be done is have the Senate committee in charge of this bill concede it an it will be ammended into IRS doctrine before anyone has a chance to protest. Utmostly, the tax itself isn't the Senate's true means to passing this IRS ammendment. It's the byproduct of the ammendment. In order for the IRS to keep track of gunowners, each gunowner will be required to register each weapon. This way, owning a gun will no longer be a right, but become a priviledge. Goodbye Second Ammendment, you were loopholed.
In Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand described the purpose of government very well:Innocent people have no need for government. Government creates lawswith intent for them to be broken, this way government can justify its existance (drug laws, anyone?). With each law broken, government obtains even more power to create more laws. Eventually, all innocent people will become guilty people. The nation become a prison.
Take a step back and look at how many laws exist in the US with no meaning: drug laws, commerce laws, affirmative action laws, etc. Laws that punish successful people. Laws that punish innocent people. Laws to protect the guilty. It's really sad. Then cross-reference those laws to the Bill of Rights and ask yourself how constitutional they really are. You'll find each one inhibits your constitutional rights in one way or another.
The days of self-governance are gone. A person isn't even allowed to defile his own personal space as his wishes anymore. And it's just getting worse, I'm afraid. -- KorgX3 agrees with Chris about colonizing Mars. NP: Nightwish - Oceanborn

Come'on jammers, some of you guys and gals take 'spoilers' way too seriously. Doesn't your brain have enough control over your eyes to simply look away if you see something that resembles a set list? Or say you dare to read one of the many wonderful concert reviews here and you run into a song title -- just don't read anymore -- screw it if they forgot to type 'spoiler'. It's such a copp out to blame the person who posted the message, you're the idiot that read the thing. I mean YOU dared to read a concert review, what....like you could type a review or talk about a show without mentioning some song titles? :) I'm waiting for someone, for fun, to leave a post that's like.

Don't forget Winter Rose. or do depending on your point of view. Trevor

O.k. so you're sitting there bored, here's something to do:
VH1 is letting people suggest a "category" for an award, and also nominate a candidate for that award. If we all choose the category "Best Progressive Metal Band", and nominate a select group of bands, we have a chance of getting this through. (Wouldn't it be cool to see DT on VH1 accepting an award?)
The address is: http://www.vh1.com/mymusic
(Click on ">SUGGEST AN AWARD" to avoid waiting for their flash animation to download.)
In the "SUGGEST AN AWARD" box, type in "Best Progressive Metal Band". This is important. We must all type in the same category so that they will get counted together.
In the "WHO WOULD YOU NOMINATE" box, enter your favorite Prog Metal Band. (I.e. Dream Theater, Pain of Salvation, Fates Warning, Symphony X, Shadow Gallery, etc.)
When it comes time for voting, hopefully we will have a "Best Progressive Metal Band" category, and the list of candidates will be our favorite bands.
I think we can suggest as many times as we want, so be sure to go back everytime you're bored (or even if you're not).

Sad... but true. That's why I'm a proud Libertarian. Libertarians took notice of many of the same issues Korg raised and are attempting (even now) to restore our freedoms.
My personal gripe about the government these days is that there's too damn much of it. There's laws concerning education, drugs, health care, all of which created by the federal government, NONE of which are authorized by the Constitution. If it isn't in the Constitution, the federal government can't do it. It's that simple. But yet they are, and no one seems to care. It's okay with people that they pay 47% of their annual income on various taxes (income, social security, et al) while none of that is authorized by the Constitution. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that at least 70% of the federal government's activities are unconstitutional. High on my list of grievances is the "war on drugs" (actually, it should be called "let's throw a lot of people in prison" war). The only reason that there should be laws against drugs is b/c they're illegal. If they were legal, the black market for, say, crack would dissapear. Theoretically, a pharmaceutical company (or companies) could that over and dispense it themselves at reasonable prices, thus eliminating the needs for some crack head to blow my head so he can steal my money and buy another hit. You can't legislate morals against human nature. It's no wonder that the street can be a violent place to be. Drugs are illegal, so my wallet makes me a target and pretty apt one since I need a fukking permit to carry a weapon to defend myself. Open season on those with more than $10 in their pockets.
"I pledge my grievance to the flag."

If you don't want to read about the new Sym X album, skim past this post ...
**SPOILER**
**SPOILER**
**SPOILER**
I've downloaded the entire album and given it about 3 full listens.
People have been speculating that this album is a "return" to Divine Wings. I disagree. In my humble opinion, this album goes far beyond that ...
For one thing, the orchestration is INCREDIBLY well done. Most of the album, particularly the instrumental interludes (Prelude, Transcendence, On The Breath of Poseidon, Death of Balance - Lacrymosa) are composed much like the score for a movie, bringing the idea of a "concept album" to a new level. Michael Romeo is a genius.
Russel Allen is back in top form (did anyone else feel he lacked a little on Twilight?) ... "the many voices of Russel" are present and sound just as good as on Divine Wings and the Damnation Game. He does a bit of the choral stuff as well (as in the intro to Divine Wings) in Prelude, Death of Balance, Rediscovery pt. II ... Romeo's playing is just as dazzling as ever .. the lyrics are well-written and do a damn good job of tying themselves together within the context of the "story". Heaviness Factor on a scale of 1-10 = 13.
These guys should definitely look into film-scoring. Especially for darker, more mysterious, adventurous flicks ... or maybe the next Castlevania game. ;)
I'm still reeling. SymX now have themselves firmly planted in the #2 spot of my favorite bands of all time ... first being who else? ;)
That's all I have time to post for now ... for those of you who are anti-Napster, I have in fact already ordered the Jap import from Mundo through gemm.com. $29, one week.
Peace! Brian
