Why is it that EVERYONE I have ever played Symphony X for thinks it is "like

O-P said: According to www.savatage.com, the release of SAVATAGE's new album Poets And Madmen will be delayed, due to an emergency TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA recording session....Because of this, studio time is now being split between TSO and Savatage, causing Poets to be delayed until January. ____________
In other news, Lois Lane has said she finds TSO to be a total babe and Savatage "mayor of herbville". Ms. Lane explained that while Savatage sure is sweet, the band is just too "golly gee" for her tastes.
Peter Parker had no comment. Bruce Wayne, as usual, bat-smacked robin in frustration.

Brian Larkin on Symphony X's new one:
>That's all I have time to post for now ... for those of you who are >anti-Napster, I have in fact already ordered the Jap import from Mundo >through gemm.com. $29, one week.
Laser's Edge (http://www.lasercd.com/) had them for $20 at Powermad. No idea whether they're still in stock. In a miracle of willpower, I forced myself to hold out 'til the US release in October. The Japanopressing has no bonus tracks, incidentally.
Brian Hayden wrote:

Heeyyyyy, no disagreement there. I left during the fourth song. This is the second time I've seen the band, actually (1st was opening for Iced Earth, alongside the Quiet Room and Division (for those that skipped the third day of Powermad, Division's singer was the winner of the autographed PM2K guitar)) -- neither time did they impress me. Factoring all of the 24 bands I caught into my $40 ticket price, seeing Jag Panzer only cost me $1.67. No big loss, especially considering some of my other $1.67's bought me some damn fine music.
The Powermad rant:
Someone needs to take over Menser's website. He may be a nice dude and a honest-to-goodness supporter of the metal community (I'll ignore the fact that he put his own, IMO, uninteresting band, Mystic-Force, immediately preceding the 'headliner', Jag Panzer), but he has absolutely no idea how to promote the thing. The crowd size at Powermad '98 was exactly the same as Powermad 2000. Conclusion? It's basically the same people there each year. Why isn't anybody else coming? Because it's not advertised.
These days, a good website can mean the difference between a sell-out show and a no-attender. NEARfest, which has an excellent site featuring far more information than you could possibly want about the show, the bands playing, the venue, etc., sold out a 1000+ seat hall. I doubt Powermad even cracked 300 tickets. By Sunday afternoon, there's barely 50 people in the place, and most of them are somehow connected with one of the bands playing. It's a damn shame to see a good band like Single Bullet Theory playing to a crowd of 20, only 6 of whom are standing anywhere near the stage. Had there been an effective website, this might not've happened.
Some examples of why the Powermad site plain sucks ass. The festival was August 18-20. The last update to the "latest news" page was in July: there's no documentation anywhere of what happened to Digital Ruin, who were supposed to play originally. The bandlist is largely updated, but many of the bands don't have hyperlinks to their websites, although basically all of them have them (as evidenced by the PM2K program / magazine). The link to directions on how to get of the venue is broken. Worst of all, the only place where the show's start and end times were listed was buried in the message board as the subject line to a post Menser sent about a week and a half before the event. Common sense dictates that all of these things are friggin' stupid, and should not be considered acceptable for any even remotely professional website.
Even if publicity was made for the festival only over the 'net by making an informative website with some sort of mailing list describing updates (no flyers were distributed outside of Baltimore-area metal shows, there were no radio ads, and so forth), it could probably double its attendance. Powermad's a good chance to see a lot of great bands in an 'intimate' environment, and you pay practically nothing for it. Plus, you get the chance to squander every cent you have left at the wide assortment of vendor tables (I'm sure they'd love the extra traffic too). Those are some sweet selling points.
Another way to get some people there would be to book a better headliner. Iced Earth, for instance. Keith was in the band for cryin' out loud (look in your copy of 'The Dark Saga' if you don't believe me) -- doesn't that have any pull? That said, even if Iced Earth were to play, attendance still wouldn't receive the boost that a non-shit website could offer. The website must be revamped!
Thank you, and goodnight.
Brian

None country can say USA is to blame for all bad happening in it, we all have individual responsibilities, but sometimes smaller countries "dance" as the big brother say so, without having a choice.
Being a powerful country, I guess USA has on its back this attention on it, responsibility. If you're in position to make a impact (good one) then it is expected from you to do it, rightfully. And it's a known fact that your goverment is misusing that power by messing in everybody's soup. And THAT IS the thing that makes most of those countries being pissed off on America. And some (I said "some") narrow-minded Americans can certainly come up with some bullshit theories to justofy the moves of their goverement, and it makes those other people wanna jump out of their skin listening that crap.
>From this time perspective it's so clear the massive brainwash in USA back in the communist time, all that anti-communism politcs (maybe justified but done in a VERY wrong way), which had nothing to do with logic. Americans were massively spitting anbd cursing all communists without even knowing what is what. Look at "Born of 4-th of July" you'll see what I mean. Moronics youngsters geting horny to cut the troat of any Russian just because he was said those are The Evil Ones.
We are all brainwashed, wether you like it or not. For me it's SO EASY to see how American population is being massively brainwashed thru their medias, I can see right thru it, but I might habe problems seeing THAT MUCH clear my brainwashing, done by my politicians. It's so easy to see the sad situation in Yugoslavia, and to see the ridiculous moves Miloshevich is making to remain on the throne (I'm killing myself is he gets elected again, and there are rumours he might)

as for the below.....I'm not sure how literally to take this, but I'd suggest a re-reading of the 13th amendment, which seems to suggest Congress can pretty much do whatever the fuck they want in terms of taxes (esp. the "from whatever source derived" part).
(note to Trent: i'm just having fun below, this isn't a personal rip....e-mail me private like, because I really would like to know what you meant by your anti-tax lines.)
Geez, if you want to get so literal, the right to bear arms wasn't IN the Constitution, either, that was merely an amendment too.....ummmm, i better stop before I mention how, without the 13th amendment, slavery would still be legal, because language protecting that WAS in the constitution.
(or to appease some of you, lemme just offer a word of thanks to the 22nd amendment, without which Bill Clinton would probably be running for a third term right about now....i'm sure many of you would agree.

hi all, I am back on the list, if anybody cares. I left when it got boring, but I feel the I cannot live without all the extra information a music fan gets and that I liked to get being on this list. So, what's up, I hear there's a new Poison and Fates Warning out. Any good? A new Symphony X coming up? How about the new Chroma Key? My welcome message said something about a new DT album, I assume this WAS SFAM?
Well, I feel enlightened already, and for those who don't remember me by the name of Schnipp or Sebastian, I was the dude from Germany who was at Birch Hill Christmas 99 with the Budweiser Cap and a sticker saying Ytsejam and who also was at the LTE show in NY and begging somebody (I think d-man) for money so I could by a shirt.
Well, I think there was DT content somewhere, Hello from Germany Sab ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Wow. What a night. Before I get into the details of DT's triumphant return to Houston after 5 years absense, I just have to tell some stories.
The day started out weird enough: I ran into some people at my University who were going to the show and met up with them again later only to find out that I was actually in a band with one of them and we hadn't recognized eachother (long story). So I talk to them, and hang out with our Jammer group at the Hard Rock. I'm having fun already, so we get to the show and unfurl our banner, and Nicole/Kirby (who was my ride) pulls me aside and says "we need to find someplace quiet". Now, I was already suspicious, as she had asked me earlier if I'd ever been backstage (the answer was no), and so we retreat away from the crowd taking their seats, and she hands me a backstage pass, with orders to be discreet. Wow. This day got even better. But, it's not through yet.
After the opening act (Watchtower, who kicked ass, btw) who I viewed from seats in the rear of the venue, I went to talk to one of my friends in the fourth row, who promptly said "hey! nobody's in this seat, why don't you take it?" pointing to the seat next to him. Great! Get to watch DT fourth row center. During... I think it was Beyond This Life, Mike through a drumstick. It bounced off some hands and landed on the floor somewhere in front of me, where I promtply made a grab and, lo and behold, I came up with it. My friend's fiancee later said I took the stick from her in the ensuing melee, so to make up for it, and repay them for the seat I got the band to sign a sheet of paper, which I gave to them, after emerging from backstage. As an afterthought, on the way out, Kirby and I got pulled over, getting lost on the labyrinth of one way/two way streets... and she didn't get a ticket. This was an extremely surreal evening.
Now the show:
First off the setlist. I haven't read a single jam in three months, so I'm pretty sure this is just regurgitation, but let's do it anyway:
Metropolis II: SFAM in its entirety The Mirror Just Let Me Breathe A bizarre medley of Acid Rain, New Millenium, and Caught in Alice's Nine Inch Tool Garden Pull Me Under
For the encore they came out and played all of A Change of Seasons, in its entirety.
Now, as for the performance, this was DEFINITELY an on night. The band was tight with few mistakes, and everyone seemed to be having fun. The last time I saw DT was on the earlier leg of the tour when they came to the Canyon Club in Dallas. It was an awful venue, and a troubled show (which included things like Mike throwing his chair at his drum tech, and inviting the whole audience to flip off the club owner at the end). Even so, they still played well. But it was nothing compared to this. THe mix was beautiful, Jordan was well audible (except during parts of the Mirror), and I could actually hear Myung's solos this time. James was fantastic. For a while I had been dissappointed at his inablitity to duplicate his performances on CD live, but this tour, and especially this show have been a real improvement. He hit most every note, including some new ones, and his voice was strong and clear, sometimes even drowning out the band. Not only that, but he lasted the whole show, remaining in control even through ACOS. John sounded great as usual, and his solos were impeccable. Mike seemed really into it, several times inciting the crowd to clap, and adding in new fills and beats here and there.
Fun tidbits:
At one point during Fatal Tragedy (I think), Mike twirled his stick and dropped it, having to reach over for a new one.
At one point, during a solo break, and just before he was supposed to enter, Mike signalled his drumtech and decided to play catch, tossing his stick to him, and catching it as it was tossed back.
During Through Her Eyes, Mike brought out Max and Melody to thunderous applause
At the beginning of ACOS, John P was unplugged, and a tech needed to come out and correct the situation.
During the orgasm portion of Home, I could swear I saw Marlene Portnoy rushing the kids out the door backstage.
Great night, great show.

What a cd!!!! I loved this album immediately without having to give it any time to grow on me. If anyone is like me and has heard OF it but has not actually heard the thing yet... DO SO!!!! I hope that once DT are off the road again there will be time for the guys to do another Explorer's Club album. I know that another Mullmuzzler is already in the works but another Explorer's Club would be very cool!!!

Well, why have *just* e-mail, when one can have e-mail with Sarah Michelle Gellar's face on the welcome screen? Now, if only I could find CordeliaMail, then THAT would be pretty cool. :)

Here's another vote that the new SX is really amazing. For me, DWOT is one of the alltime classics out there. However, I consider their other previously released disks a significant step down. The good news is that "V" is back up at the level of DWOT. It may not surpass it, but so what. They weave the orchestration with the metal very tastefully. And, there are a few cool interludes in a manner not unlike Tool's Aenema. Metal with melody and complexity. And, there are certain CDs that you just know will grow further on you over time and I think that this will be one of them.
One potential complaint for those who wait for the non-Japanese CDs to arrive is that the approx 12 paragraph background behind the CD's theme is not included in the official CD liners (some funky stuff about Atlantis and the like). It is found - in English, thankfully - in the middle of the paper Japanese insert. I think that it would be a stretch to think that the record companies would go out of their way to expand upon the CD liner and include this material. Too bad, especially if you pay attention to the lyrics.
BTW, this is the current update fo the pending SX tour in Europe including a couple of recent changes. I will be there (Paris, Verviers and Bordeaux - will anyone else be there ??) !!
23/11/2000 : LILLE / SPLENDID 24/11/2000 : TOURS / PLEIADE 25/11/2000 : PARIS / ELYSEE (festival with Kamelot and a French band called Heavenly) 26/11/2000 : STRASBOURG / LAITERIE (festival with Kamelot, Metalium, Freedom Call & Avalon) 27/11/2000 : VERVIERS (B) / SPIRIT of 66 (really cool place to see a show !!) 28/11/2000 : OFF / travel 29/11/2000 : BORDEAUX / THEATRE BARBEY 30/11/2000 : MONTPELLIER / ROCKSTORE 01/12/2000 : LYON / TRANSBORDEUR
