I would definitely start with "Oceanborn". Their newest one "Wishmaster" has some mind-blowing stuff on it too, so that's a close second, but overall I think "Oceanborn" is better. If you want to give a listen to some stuff before you buy, here are a few places to check out for some Nightwish sound files. Poke around the sites and you'll find both song clips and full songs, some in MP3 and some in RA format. Enjoy!!

Well, thank god someone agrees with me. For me, there is a line between throwing together a jumble of notes and creating a song. Anyone can be able to play fluently and technically well, but it takes another certain skill to be able to write a song. This subject also reminds of a scene in the film Ferinelli. The castrato was complaining to his brother (the composer of the material he would tour and sing to) that his compositions were stepping all over his words and singing. The brother wrote material that was too embellished and caused the singer to feel crowded. This is the situation with technical metal for me. It's fine to have technical stuff in the middle of the song but dammit when the verse is happening or when the chorus is going on the musicians should take a back seat to the singer.

Hehehe that's a new topic for this list, but a pretty fucking old one for this planet.

Does anyone else feel sort of disenfranchised from their government or their country? It conjures a lot of immediate reactions when I read a post like the pseudo threat from that Russian jammer. I laugh, because I have the false sense of security fostered by living in the most powerful nation on earth, during the height of its power and the low-point of Russian power... but I stop laughing when I remember that technology (which ironically bridges both sides of the gap, in web communities like this) has eliminated the need for an ungodly army with devastating toys... all it's going to take is a suitcase nuke or chemical/biological weapons (which we all must believe that all global powers have) and that's the end for everyone... even our chilly jammer friends in Antarctica. I hope I get a chance to see the Great Wall before China lets loose a slew of missiles with American flags painted on them (why bother to change the outward aesthetics, when we know where they got the schematics!) It makes me angry and sad simultaneously that we're not all wise enough to recognize that none of us, free nation or not, have any immediate or direct say in what is and what has been (anyone familiar with our Constitution knows that this is why we call it a democratic REPUBLIC, and not just a "Democracy"). Read Tocqueville and see why we're fucked no matter who "we" are. :) If the American people are responsible for the state of the world, why does everyone get pissed off when we police it? And why would one assign blame to the mindless mass populace of any nation... if we Americans were in control of our country our federal government wouldn't be writing laws that our nation's defining documents expressly leave to the individual states to arbitrate. (I don't know if I should have started this post off with "I don't want to go off on a rant here, but" or if I should be working on designing my own flag and saving up for some land in Montana) The state of society in Russia is not a result of nor a responsibility of the average American Ytsejammer, and the same goes for the Russian Ytsejammer. I don't even believe that American international affairs are the responsibility of the American people anymore. That's what we have a CIA for (wait... why DO we have a CIA? Oh yeah, to unsettle Russian Ytsejammers!) The Russian anti-American sentiment is a result of ignorance and self loathing, and an unwillingness to take responsibility for oneself, just as the American complacency, ignorance, and general lack of empathy is why we look around and see a nation of egotistical idiots who care more about football or dancing or whatever than about 100 guys (our own age) who get the honor of biting it in a body of water that most of us couldn't even locate on a map (stories of a local school bus strike took precedence over the story of the Russian sub here. Priorities.) Why not point some of that Russian anti-American sentiment towards your own nation and fix whatever problem exists that let those dudes sit underwater for a week before getting help? I don't have time to really care about political threats on a Dream Theater mailing list. I think it's lunacy. Blow up the world... go ahead... someone's got to do it. But don't ask me to take responsibility for the way you feel about "my" country. And no, I'm not paying reparations for slavery either. It's never going to be a perfect world... anyone up for colonizing Mars? We could carve a giant Majesty logo on it and govern the planet based on lyrics from DT songs... it'll be great!

This post should not exist. Come and get me Skadz.

I don't think this has appeared here yet...

SAVATAGE - Workaholic Madmen! According to www.savatage.com, the release of SAVATAGE's new album Poets And Madmen will be delayed, due to an emergency TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA recording session. The TSO have been asked by Universal Studios and director Ron Howard to write some new music for the November 2000 holiday movie release The Grinch starring Jim Carey. This would be new material within the framework of the band's Trans-Siberian Orchestra classical sideband, a behemoth of bombast who have created two very successful Christmas albums as well as the recent Beethoven's Last Night. These songs will be featured both in the movie and on the soundtrack. Because of this, studio time is now being split between TSO and Savatage, causing Poets to be delayed until January. The U.S. tour plans for August have now been pushed back till October. Plans are to do these shows with a new guitarist. No word on a replacement for Al Pitrelli yet, that decision will come following the recording of the new album. TSO will then be doing shows from mid-November till right around Christmas. A full scale World Tour for Savatage should kick off in late January 2001. Some songs slated to be included on Poets And Madmen are entitled 'Man in The Mirror', 'Cantations', 'Power', 'The Rumor', 'Deliver The Silence', 'Awaken', and the title track 'Poets And Madmen'. Are we looking at another concept album? "We're really not sure," says Savatage keyboardist and co-vocalist Jon Oliva, " because that's the last thing we do, place all the lyrics and stuff and we're constantly changing lyrics. So I don't know if Paul (O'Neill, producer, lyrics) is going to tie everything together in the end or not. I mean, Paul is weird like that (laughs). You never really know. But we haven't been planning it that way. We just keep writing. Like I say, we started with 15 songs, and since we've been in the studio we've come up with another ten. So we're trying to whittle it down from 25 songs. But we're really really psyched about this record. It's coming out really good. I've seen tinges of stuff where songs could possibly be tied together. His lyric writing for this is a lot darker than the last couple of albums and I think it's because the music is a lot darker and more moody and heavy. The stuff he's got so far is really, really intense (laughs). And I'm singing a lot more on this album. It's more of an even split between Zakk and myself, hence the idea of Poets (Zakk) and Madmen (myself), me being more screamy and Zakk being more melodic."

I agree with Korg for a change. Shock! But what pisses me off most about this is that everyone has now decided to turn around and blame the Russian defence misnistry and the Navy. For crying out loud, for the last ten years, the MoD and Navy have been saying, "Look, we are BADLKY underfunded; if you don't give us more money, then tehre is going to be a really serious accident." Now there really HAS been a pretty serious accident, and what happens? Everyone's blaming the people who tried to WARN them that this was bound to happen. Funnily enough, the Russian space aganecy has ALSO been saying that they're underfunded and that there will be a bad accident if something's not done soon. But will anyone listen? 'Course not. They'll just blame 'em when it goes wrong.

Simple solution is that Russia should re-arm. It creates jobs and national pride, two things that Russia desparately needs right now.

Hey everyone sorry for the lack of DTC. I am running an office pool, as I always do, and I wanted to see if anyone was interested. If so, please reply via private email. It's $5/wk, with spreads, and uses http://football.commissioner.com to make picks and keep track of standings. Ain't the internet great!

See http://www.dreamtheater.net/discogpr.htm for more side projects. I would definately recommend 'Explorer's Club - Age Of Impact', James LaBrie sings on a couple of songs on this fine progressive album.

On the 18th of October, I will be seeing Dream Theater at the Glasgow Barrowlands. I have decided that this will be the best concert ever; so, in order to facilitate this, I have decided to obtain a Backstage Pass for the show.

Unfortunately, I do not know how to do this. Will I have to perform some kind of "act" on a large hairy gentleman? Or do you think I should laminate my SFAM CD cover, hang it around my neck, and hope nobody notices? Or should I get a job at the venue?

Please send your suggestions to my personal assistant, Debbie. Her email address is: graham@picsel.com

    Thanks.

I know this is not DT-related, but it is loosely tied to the recent discussion's of "offensive" and "bad taste"

Freezing Eskimos Have 47 Words for "This Sucks" by Christian Rudder

Um-waka-waka, Canada A group of Harvard linguists studying the Eskimos of northern Canada have discovered that in addition to 34 words for snow, the arctic culture has over 47 words meaning "this sucks." Dr. Trisha Dean, who led the team said, "Language, like other social constructs, is environmentally influenced. For instance, there are ten Russian words for 'starving' and twelve for 'mono-brow'. Naturally, the vocabulary of the Inuits reflects that living on frigid, barren glaciers and eating only fish heads for generation after generation is very sucky."

[image missing] An Eskimo beside his igloo or "suck-hut".

She maintains that the many words allow the Inuits to convey rich nuances of suckiness that go unnoticed by English-speakers. Said Dean, "If an American woke up smelling like rotten tuna, he would say 'this sucks', the same thing he would say if he smelled like rotten herring instead. However, an Eskimo would say 'massak' about a tuna-stench, while the latter situation would require the harsh 'eraput.'"

Dr. Dean supplied this list of common Eskimo words for suck and their English translations.

tingenek - This sucks. massalerauvok - Long ago, my son, it did not suck, but that's not really true at this time. mauja - For many moons, it has sucked. Now is no different. akkilokipok - It is as if the great-snowtiger of suckiness has raped my sister.

-Zircon the Blue "I wouldn't be at all surprised if Wimpy were to snap like a store-brand pretzel and mow down the entire Popeye cast, shouting "It's Tuesday, people! Payback time!'" - The Brunching Shuttlecocks

Of course (or perhaps off course :) this is very offtopic.. but ISTR the weather conditions being quite bad right after the accident. That fact seems to have been largely forgotten now...

(BTW I thought it was only the propulsion system that was nuclear, the weapons were conventional??)

I think the only thing that can be concluded from this affair is that if you repeatedly and systematically put a bunch of guys in a steel tubes full of explosives some of them will perish.

I don't think the 'secrets' aspect had so much to do with it as red tape and pride.

Sad story in any case.. :\

Say what you want about the US, I'm still happy the two hot wars and the cold one of the last century ended the way they did... :)

    Howdy...

Matt here... I had a chance to talk with Neal Morse before the Chicago show on Aug. 10th... Check it out on my lame ass radio show site: http://www.moshpitradio.com

Also... as you've all seen... the show was great! And for the lucky 13th time of seeing OFB (4th this year), I snagged Portnoy's drum head as he threw it out into the crowd... From the front row of the balcony even! Something like this belongs in a jammer's hands right?! I got everyone else but Myung to sign it the next night in Milwaukee... a pic off my webcam of it is here: http://mattymo.com/images/portnoydrumhead.jpg

Well enough of tooting my own horn I guess...

    Back to lurk mode. :-)
