One question... Will there be anything at the merch. booth? DT just seems to me to be the sort of band that wouldn't have diddley crap for merchandise. heheheh. Could someone let us know what's there? Just wondering how much money to take with me. :)

And for everyone attending SLC on the 8th, I'll be hanging around out back after the show with a box of Twinkies to try and entice Mike and Co. over to BS for a bit. I know chumming is illegal, but... :) Just look for the guy with the South Park hat on and wearing all black. I'm starting to debate wearing my 80's metal black denim jacket... If I do, though, you won't miss me. (I tried posting something like this before the 'jam died. Apologies if I am repeating myself or stuttering)

BTW, check out Guitar.com's list of top 100 guitar players of all time. The results are mostly sickening. I think talent is much more important than influence, but obviously I must be in the minority. Considering Kurt Cobain outranks Joe Satch and Eric Johnson among other greats... And John Petrucci isn't even listed... -- KorgX3 hates top xx lists that he doesn't write. NP: Kenny G - Sentimental.mp3

If anybody listened to the radio 24/7 about 2 weeks in advance of the show, you'd think DT was opening for Hoey, the way 93.3 advertised for it the ONE whole time I heard the ad. Ah well, Dream Theater is now, moreso than ever, the greatest kept secret in the rock 'n roll industry.

Thank god I knew about 'em! :D

I don't know how many reviews have already graced this list about the Phoenix show, I'm sure somebody's posted something. It was a goddamn ytsejammer reunion up in the second tier (Petrucci-side), you'd think the audience was a massive cult! Worshippers de la Dreamus Theaterus. The Brothers of Ytse Ytse Ytse Ytse Ptang Swip Zooboing DUNT DUNT DUNT! The Commune of Prog...une! But I digress.

Oh, did I forget to mention THIS EMAIL HAS MORE SPOILERS THAN A 16 YEAR OLD WHITE BREAD UPPER MIDDLE CLASS RAPPER WANNABE HAS ON HIS HONDA CIVIC! (I wonder how you say that in German?)

Mama mia that was a spicey show!

After a quick lunch at the Arizona Center Hooters (the official gathering spot of YOUR Phoenix Ytsejammers), a good lot of us drove to Celebrity Theater, arriving somewhere around 5:00pm. A good two and a half hours to drool over those Dream Theater shirts that we couldn't afford or missed the show they were sold at (mmmmmm...long sleeved Awake shirt...), torment the people wearing any Korn paraphanelia, and sneak far ahead of most of the line by saying "I reeeeally have to pee. Let me in or your pant leg gets it!"

For those of you who, most of ya are, not familiar with Celebrity Theater in downtown Phoenix, it's a circular, symmetrical stage with a moderate amount of seats encircling it. Usually, the stage rotates so everybody gets a good look at the band for 5 minutes, and the back of their gear for another 5 minutes. In this case, half of the chamber was cut off and the stage was stationary. Suffice it to say, this gig was a bit smaller than the FII gig was just so long ago.

Gary Hoey came out, played a bunch of covers in his own surf shredi style, (okay, maybe he wrote one or two songs...but that was it), and we all went nuts over Hocus Pocus (wasn't that by Focus?), a pretty cool version of Pink Floyd's "Money"...and then...the stage was SET!

The lights go down, people start turning into monkey/werewolf hybrids and two television monitors light up the chamber. Tick Tock, Tick Tock. The guitar starts up, and a light shines down on Petrucci as he's pirched in front of the drum set with his new Music Man guitar. The distortion kicks in and BLAMMO, we're on our way to that mystical musical realm wherein everybody is consumed by the music. Earth ceased to exist. There was only Dream Theater. And that little female bartender with the skin tight pants. Mmmmm.

For a good 80 minutes everybody is swallowed up by Metropolis Part 2, as they play the ENTIRE FREAKING SONG all the way through, non stop, they break for no one! Except Jordan, who kicks in a sequencer and starts pounding the keyboard at ludicrous speed, and John Petrucci comes in with his guitar and Myung and his bass and and and...

James: Front man. Lead Singer. Expression maker. Canadian. This guy blew the air waves through the chamber walls in a performance that was just short of perfection (he forgot a couple lyrics, or his mic went out...one or the other). Completely on pitch, totally with the rest of the band, hell, I'd even go so far as to say that this made the performance on OiaLT seem like Beavis and Cradle of Filth doing a damn good impression of Dream Theater. You can't ask for more from a country that gave us James LaBrie, and Shania Twain!

John Petrucci: The bard of a new generation. (POP fizz ahhhhh) Is there anything this guy can't play? He just ran around the stage with all his expensive guitars playing music that everybody in the audience loves...taunting me.

John Myung: Ouch. Ouch. OUCH. How the hell do fingers run so quickly along a flimsy scrap of wound metal like that? So clearly, so smoothly...so silky and shiny. I bet he uses Panteen. Maybe he's just born with it.

Mike Portnoy: The drummer we love to love, banging away at those skins like a rabid African tribesman being chased around by European white guys in a jeep. There's just a point you can get to technically if you practice hard enough, and there's only so much feeling you can get if you play with all braun and no brains, Mike just so happens to be the perfect mixture of both brains and braun, with a little bit of curry and crack cocaine mixed in. A legend. There will be many, many many drummers down the road who will pick up Dream Theater albums and gain some great inspiration in the future.

And last, but beyond far the least, that Jordan guy. Everybody under the DT umbrella has an opinion on this third keyboardist. It's almost to the point of Van Halen's singers' fans. If anybody was turned off by the fusion or the ragtime snippets that this keyboard diety, I urge you to go to the show, feel the warmth, the pounding of that keyboard speaker's blow. The solo he pulled out at this concert was fast, pounding, aggressive, and so goddamn good I wished I had a minidisc recorder with me at the time.

Then they finally came to the end of the song, and finished up the show with a medley of the old faves, Peruvian Skies, Pull Me Under, Only A Matter of Time, and...a large chunk of my memory was filled by thoughts of that bartender....Anyways. That is all.

    GO SEE THIS SHOW.

There was the Metropolis 2 T shirt with the cover art on the front, and a curved parchment on the back, with the beautiful bright yellow Dream Theater logo going across the front chest, and the band's names down the backside. $25 (black, of course)

Another black T-shirt with a picture of the guys with the new guy, and the tour dates on the backside printed over the majesty symbol. $25

2 or three different baseball hats, I didn't bother looking at 'em...I always lose my hats when I'm headbanging or getting really drunk. I lose all my close when I do both. $25 each.

This green long sleeved shirt that looked like thermal underwear with buttons going down the front collar, like a henley. A small Dream Theater logo on the front left breast. $40.

    Greetings fellow Jamsters,

I'd like to hear from every Jammer that's planning on attending the Minneapolis Minnesota show on February 11th. Particularly those that are commuting from far away lands. Please e-mail me privately with your projected date and time of arrival. I plan on arranging a meeting for the Ytse-folk at a place that can accommodate those that have a need to relax after a long road trip and get something to eat. I'm also awaiting an answer from the band regarding an after show gathering at the venue.. away from the harsh (brrrr) weather... And I need a head count.

    huh huh... I said "head"

Anyway, I'm selling all my original Bahr boot CDs. I no longer need to keep 'em. They are in near perfect condition and play without errors.

NOTE: I'm reposting this because the jam died...I guess someone might have read it because I got a response, but I could use more advice so...

Hello everyone. This is a guitar question for anyone that can help, particularly any Ibanez Universe players. Here goes: I have a UV7BK, the black and green one, and a UV777BK (the latest one, I think). The 777BK plays better, comfort wise, and in general I like it better, but for some reason, I get a lot more picking noise out of it than I do with my older one. I've tried EQing it out to some extent, which didn't work well, and I've tried different picking techniques, and moving the pickup...nothing works. The only thing that helped a very little was turning the tone knob down...but then it sounded like ass. Any suggestions? It doesn't bug me much for rhythm playing, but when I'm trying to play a nice clean lead passage it sounds awful, plus if I'm using delay, I get the little clicks repeated and it's even worse. One thing, I know you pretty much get picking noise no matter what, and I have considered that...but I'm just getting tons of noise, to the point where it interferes with the actual notes. Any help from you guitar players would be awesome. Thanks,

    Bobby

    Hey Jammers,

I was recently having a discussion with someone with a large collection of bootlegs. He was telling me how many of the recordings sound really good because they are recorded direct to DAT tape, straight from the board. The conversation somehow ended up getting to him telling me that, noone mikes their guitar amp anymore, that hasn't been done like that for years, or some words to that effect.

I expressed my surprise at this statement, although I couldn't disagree cause I don't know. Since I am a once-upon-a-time guitar player I didn't think you could truly achieve 'that tone thing', that which is YOUR SOUND, without including the characteristic sound of the amp/speaker cabinet itself--therefore a mike on the amp's speaker was the way I always envisioned getting the guitar into the board and to the house PA.

Is he right? Do most guitar players now have a patch directly into the board without a mike on the amp? How does Petrucci's guitar get into the board?

Thanks for any light you guys/gals can shed oon this subject.

Its cool hes recording with Fates again, but I thought he didn't want to be in a prog band, yet since leaving DT he's done 1 solo Cd, 1 Fates and about to do another of each. Looks liek to me he's an un-official member of FW and does solo Cd's like Ray Alder and Jim Matheos.

]From what I understand and from the little I've worked as a sound engineer (I have had discussiong about this with a couple of my superiors), you cannot get a true representation of what the guitar sounds like live without miking the amp. But apparently a lot of engineers like to do a mix of the miked sound from the amp as well as a DA from the amp itself, which gives it a fuller, more balanced sound. I haven't had the opportunity to test this theory out, but it makes sense to me - you get the full, rich sound that's direct out from the amp, but since you aren't getting the actual sound signal that you'd get from the amp's speaker, you get all the imperfections added into the mix that come from the speaker that balance out the true sound of the instrument.
