No word yet on which Sam Ash's they'll be yet? Damn. Anyway, is anyone else
going to the Chicago show on the 13th? Has anyone see the Dreggs play. I
heard they are incredible as well. One last thing, who is the third act? Is
it Spocks Bread or Hoey? How is Spocks Beard?

I'm new to the list out here in sunny(not today) Southern Cal. I haven't seen
this posted, but the boys are doing an interview today at 12:30 (PST) at
www.knac.com. At least that is what the site had posted last night. They do
streaming audio so have you real players or whatever you use ready.

Actually, I liked Radiation, so my opinion might not matter to you. Marillion.com is an ok album. It has some good songs in there, but it is hit or miss.

    Hello?!

Get some sense ppl, everyone knows the guitar magazines, esp Guitar World,
are trend-obsessed and highly populistic. Guitar, though, usually have a
different prespective and I must say I didn't have any problem with the top
    25. The only omissions I could come to think of or changes I would've
    suggested would be:

    * where's James Burton?!?!?
    * David Gilmour and Billy Gibbons a bit higher
    * Kurt Cobain and Pat Metheny a bit lower
    * Jaymz instead of Kirk would've been right
    * I never thought Thurston Moore really was such an innovator
    * and why does Blackmore ALWAYS end up at #100 (see Mojo etc etc), Yngwie
    should be behind Blackmore

Maybe I would have chosen some other blues players... I don't know, of
course there were some I couldn't comment on because I haven't heard them
enough, or at all, but that doesn't mean the 2nd guitarist in Empty Tremor
    would deserve their spot.

I got my CD Monday or Tuesday. I live outside of Cincinnati, so I
would think anyone living in this part of the country should have it
shortly. I could tell you all what's on it...but then I'd have to kill
you.... :) Just Kidding, here you go:

    "Cleaning Out The Closet"

    1. Don't look past me 6:23
    2. To live forever 1991 4:36
    3. To live forever 1994 4:55
    4. Eve 5:10
    5. Raise the knife 11:35
    6. Where are you now? 7:26
    7. The way it used to be 7:47
    8. Cover my eyes 3:21
    9. Speak to me 6:10

The recordings range from 1990 to 1999. Raise the Knife includes vocals,
and all of the songs sound pretty good studio/demo recordings.

There is also a 10th track, which is the Murder scene from SFAM, all of the
sound effects, with the music removed, so that you can better hear what is
    going on.

Finally, there is a video you can play on your computer. It is just the
little "in the studio" teaser video that Portnoy shot and put on his web
page before SFAM came out. It's just him walking around in the studio while
they were making SFAM, kinda giving a tour and briefly talking to the other
    guys...

At any rate, this should satisfy any cravings for B-Sides! Here's hoping it
    your copy arrives soon!

For any of you who have not yet joined the fanclub, they have extended the
deadline, so you still have time to get your membership fee in and get an
Xmas CD. If you're not sure whether your DTIFC membership has expired, yet,
send an email to dtifc@yahoo.com, and "Kirby" should be able to let you
    know.

While it is true that with a tube or solid-state amp, the best guitar sounds are mic'd cabinets, the digital modelling amps have changed this from being the exclusive approach to achieving a good tone.

I am the proud owner of a Line 6 Flextone Plus amp (no I don't work for them). This amp is a digital modelling amp. Prior to owning this amp, I had owned various tube amps including the 5150 combo and a Mesa Boogie. The Flextone is the only amp that I've ever heard that can be ran directly to the P.A. and sound just as good as it does mic'd. I've never heard anything like it. The same is true for the AX2 and the Pod. Something with the digital modelling seems to accurately emulate the sound of a mic'd tube cab even when lined direct.

This amp has no tubes and sounds just like a tube amp to me.

Don't believe me? Give my amp a listen on my band's website at: http://www.geocities.com/collaboration_element

The audio files are using the Mesa Boogie amp model.

I agree that Yngwie should definitely be in there (as well of course as JP!)
but you guys gotta understand that shredders arent the only good guitar
players out there. They're something to be said for guys who wrote good songs
too. Kurt Cobain is on there casue he was a hell of a songwriter (IMO of
course), and Jimmy Page and Krik Hammett HAVE to be on there. Page was
incredible at taking all kinds of musical forms and incorporating them into
his music. And Kik Hammett is one of the best soloists ever IMO. Now, I guess
you could make the argument that a great guitar player is a guy who uses the
guitar's capabilities to their fullest extent. If you're using that criteria
then I gues ya gotta leave Cobain and so,me others off. But at the same rate,
while Cobain certainly is limited in many ways in his guitar abilities so is
Yngwie (and other shredders) too I think. I mean, the guy is a hell of a
guitar player but IMO he cant write a song to save his ass. Many of those
shredder types arent great at rythym palying IMO. Their riffs are either very
dull and unispired or just plain nonexistent for the most part. So, going by
this, does this make a shredder a better player than someone who can''t shred
but writes good song? I think that arguments can be made for both. So, I
think there's a lot of criteria that you have to consder when you talk about
    great guitar players.

Egads. The problem right here is that ya looked at Hit Parader Magazine. That
thing is the biggest piece of crap in the world. There are never any
interviews or news that is anywhere near recent. And their articles all start
off by saying something like "ratt is back with a rockin new platter of 12
scorching hot songs that'll rock your night up." The articles in that rag are
written on a third grade reading level. They do zero research at all for them
and there are many words yet nothing is ever actually said. All this pretty
much goes for Circus magazine too.

Sir Korg Ecksthrey farted in the Ytsejam's general direction: > Also, btw, Is Marillion.com pretty good? I was rather diappointed > with > Radiat10n and would appreciate a small review of the album. Itchy? > :)

Short song-by-song review for ya, here.

    1. A Legacy - if you liked "Under The Sun" off Radiation, you'll dig this, but I think it's considerably better. Much more of that Marillion-type depth in parts.

    2. Deserve - another catchy-ass upbeat rocker, can't stand the sax in the beginning, though.

    3. Go! - pretty cool atmospheric beginning, turns into something you could expect from Marillion on Afraid Of Sunlight, but not depressing enough.

    4. Rich - extremely catchy rockin' type song, gotta love the moog that follows the melody during the "do do do" part. the handclaps are pretty silly, but I dare you not to sing along with the chorus, it's damn near impossible.

    5. Enlightened - I like this song for it's subtlety, if nothing else. Very acoustic-y once all the instruments kick in, reminds me of something that could've easily fit onto This Strange Engine.

    6. Built-In Bastard Radar - ok, make no bones about it, this song is DUMB. except for the part with the decently heavy riffing (no kidding) part.

    7. Tumble Down The Years - great song. I would say it reminds me of the happier side of The Cure, but I'm not totally sure I'm correct in saying that. regardless, great song.

    8. Interior Lulu - the obligatory "long song" for the album, starts out with a strange looped beat and sounds like it may be something that you may as well skip. at least the first two minutes or so of it does. then about two minutes into it, it actually starts getting cool. could it be? yes! Marillion sounds like Marillion again! the rest of the song is this big-ass emotional rollercoaster, ala This Strange Engine. the part starting at 5 minutes into the song never fails to give me goosebumps. the rest of the 15 minute (total) song will kick your ass left and right if you're a fan of the Season's End, Brave, Afraid Of Sunlight or This Strange Engine albums.

    9. House - this song is another long one. sounds like what would happen if Massive Attack and Marillion had a child. if you don't get chills when listening to this song, there's obviously something wrong with you. song doesn't have any extremely different parts that you would expect in a long "prog" song, but believe me, the 10 minutes seem like 2 when you're listening to it.

To sum it up, this album is a shitload better than last one. I think they figured out that trying to be contemporary and modern isn't the best route for them. It's no Brave, but it's definitely a step back in the right direction after the extremely disappointing (imo) Radiation.

Oh yeah, and stop listening to those lame-ass Phil Collins ballads, you cheeseball. ;)

A lOng tImE (fuck this) ago when I was in my little high school garage band playing songs about blowing up cats with m-80s and such, we decided to cut a demo. My guitarist had some POS Zoom 2020 or something like that. Everytime we directed it into the Karaoke (don't laugh), it came out sounding like a bumblebee with a limp dick. So we mic'ed his Randall amp and ran it through and it came out sounding shitty, but 20 times better. :)

One thing I haven't seen mentioned though are Cabinet Emulators. I have my Digitech RP-20 stompbox that allows me to flip this on and it really makes a nice difference if I'm directing or playing through headphones or whatever. It's a really cheap alternative if you're trying to play a lick with a panning chorus or something and don't have the ability to mic a left and right channel, too.

But whoever mentioned running an electro-acoustic direct... Yuck! Icky! Pooey! I'll forgive you if you were talking about a live setting, though. :) In the studio, you want four mics on an acoutic. One at the soundhole, one on the neck, and two behind the player about four feet back so all of the mics make an X through the player. One thing I hate about directing an acoustic is mostly the lack of string noise. I think string noise is half of the charm of an acoustic. But, Kevin Shirley taught us that on the '97 Xmas CD didn't he? :) "Zhoong, zhoong-a zhoong! John, you cretin! Who taught you to play guitar? When they let us in to the Phoenix show, there was a song playing on the PA that I've never heard before. The song lasted probably a good 25-30 minutes, and it sounded like it could possibly be the voice of Neal Morse. If anyone know could they please e-mail me privately or post to the jam? My initial thought was it could be from TransAtlantic.

I'm pretty damn sure that it was Transatlantic. I was at this show, and the drummer was OBVIOUSLY Mike (you just can't mistake his style, not to mention those StarClassic Maples), and the singer was Neal Morse, and that was enough to convince me... :)

Ummm... But I think that's very stupid to have a list of the Top Guitarist in that sense. Perhaps it should have read "The 100 Greatest Songwriters Who Happened to be Guitarists of the Millenium." Personally, I think Kurt sucks. BUT, I will grant that (I hate to say it) Kurt was influential in my even picking up a guitar, as was Kirk Hammett. BUT, that is >all< the credit I will give them. I think anyone who uses Kurt as a technical influence should have their driver's license suspended.

"Yah, man, Kurt was like soooo cool. It took hours of practice to give up this like, horribly overzealous need to play accurately before I could even hope to become as sloppy a player as Kurt was, man. I mean, like wow. I still have a problem because I keep alternate picking. I mean, what's up with that? Kurt never alternate picked. I feel I've got a long way to go, but I mean, like, it's good, you know? Kurt is a hero. Check this out, I can totally make it through that railroad crossing before that train gets here..."

As much as I post here, you'd think this was called the Korgtsejam wouldn't you? :P

I just have a question I was wondering if anyone could answer me. That Jeeves guy at ask.com is a pansy and never seems to help me... I want to uniquely decorate my yucky colored transparent butterscotch Ibanez with some stickers I'd acquired. Problem is, stickers wear out and fall off after while... SO! My question is...

How do I laminate the bastards on my guitar after I get them pasted? What I'm mostly worried about is that the laminate will soak into the stickers and ruin them then I'll have a fucked up guitar. :( They're your typical cheap paper-based stickers like you used to get out of bubble-gum baseball card packs as a kid. Trust me, the idea behind the effort would make this the most unique guitar quite worthy of my possession. :) hehehehe. If anyone has any tips, I'd be VERY happy to hear them. Thanks. :) -- KorgX3 is getting underwear burns. Ack. Owwie. Jock itch. Ack. NP: Shadow Gallery - War For Sale.mp3

I just got back from seeing Steve Vai last night, what a performer. Great live show, Steve is also a fantastic frontman. He surprised everyone by throwing in a cover of Led Zep's 'Black Dog', unfortuneatly I didn't get that song, my MD packed in half way through the show.

New releases that I can highly recommend to prog fans:

Spiral Architect - 'A Sceptic's Universe' Highly technical metal, a beautiful combination of Cynic, Gordian Knot, Watchtower. Not for the faint hearted, can be quite hard on the ears at first. The disc is song orientated, but mind blowing musicianship. They also have a great singer, who is a great combination of Dickinson/Adler. They also do a brilliant cover of Fates 'Prelude To Ruin' (Japanese version only) If you like Control Denied, you'll have kittens over these guys :) I think the Cd is avialable only right now from Lasers Edge.

Digital Ruin - 'Dwelling In The Out' Never heard these guys until now, killer riff's, quite heavy and lots of groove, very surprising, lots of depth to their songwriting. Reminds me of a more adept Fates warning, more groove, melodies and prog.

Well, if the guitar is in perfect, and I mean PERFECT condition, that is probably a decent deal (though you could probably get it cheaper than that). This guitar has been modified fairly heavily (a bridge change is not the least destructive modification one can do), so be sure to inspect it very, very carefully. If this is an internet deal, make sure you get very detailed pictures of the guitar (current ones - pics taken before the mods were done won't help much). If you know anyone in the seller's area, have that person check it out for you. Hope this helps...

This may sound a little over-zealous, but hey - it's better than getting screwed, right? :)

Totally true, last year i bought a JPM100P3 from someone on the mikeportnoy.com board. After a few months of working out the kinks (mainly my concern about sending a money order for $900 to him and his concern of sending things COD etc) i decided to go for it. And well the guitar is in perfect condition and everything turned out great for both of us.
