First of all...Don't do it! You say that the guitar
has a transparent butterscotch finish? Is it one of
the USRG models from '96? Just curious. If you REALLY
want to do this, put the stickers on and have the body
    proffesionally clear-coated. That's what I would do,
assuming I got hit in the head and wanted to mess up a
    great looking guitar! :)

heeeeeeeeeeeeey new to the list here but just interested in who's gonna be at
the Philly show on the 26th, a Friday I believe? me and my group are gonna be
there, leaving at about 5 so we'd be there around 6 or so. Yes, we are going
to have complete possession of the front, right infront of the
stage....although on the stage would be preferred...in any case, for any who
are interested, I'm going to be in my loooovely black vinyl moto pants (which
i love, they've got 4 pockets in the front: two at the knees, padded, and two
where normal ones would be, all with zippers :) ) and my silky/shiney black
top, sleeve-less, and my boots. i got dark brown hair and green eyes, but i
might be wearing my yellow and black sunglasses. anywayz that's all, if
you're gonna be there, email me or something. laterz all!!!!!

Hello, I've just recently become a fan of Dream Theater when I bought SfaM
when it first came out. I have to say, it blew me away. Anyway, we all
know dream theater is great, so...

I misplaced my lyrics booklet for SfaM. Does anyone know if there's any way
I could go about getting another copy of this without purchasing the album
    again?

Also, I'm in New Jersey and cannot attend neither the NJ or NY shows this
month. Might the band come back to this area later on, or are the tourdates
on the site the only ones they are playing?

    Well, thank you in advance,
    David

jimmy page did a lot for music, but he's not very good by today's standars.. he noodles a bunch in between those oh so classic riffs that have been rehashed by every zeppelin influenced guitarist out there.. nothing increadible..nothing outside of penitonic..

as far as hammett goes.. i really hope you're not a guitarist, and this is all said out of common folk ignorance, because hammett is HORRID.. quite possibly THE worst guitarist holding a major record contract.. his solo's lack continuity and/or resolution.. he lands on any random note that he stumbles upon, because he has practically zero understanding of his instrument.. what he does have is a great set up with enough tone to get him past the untrained ear.. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE e-mail me privately if you wish to continue this discussion as i see a metallica thread about to start.. so for god sake don't respond to this on the jam..

as far as kurt cobain goes..it's a top 100 GUITARIST list.. not top 100 songwriters.. and as i songwriter i thought he was pretty bad personally, but that's just an opinion. (hammett's wretchedness surpasses opinion..his shitty playing just vommits all over musical laws such as: "don't fucking resolve a solo on a suspended note you idiot"

    inferno
(interesting choice of handle after a post like that one)

    p.s.
i'll pay money to keep the metallica thread that's itching to start off the jam.. as off right now it's a "guitarist" thread.. please lets keep it that way

    idiot"

Though I'm definitely not a Hammett fan by any stretch of the imagination, I
find it interesting that you seem to believe that a solo cannot end on a
suspended note (or any other note, for that matter). Have an open mind - if
it sounds good, it sounds good. End of story. Don't get me wrong - I don't
think hardly ANY of Kirk's solos sound very good, but Good Lord - there is
not a big book that dictates what makes up a good guitar solo. Everything
in that book would be a cliche by now anyway. Screw continuity, screw
resolution, screw everything else. If a guitarist successfully projects the
emotion he is trying to project, he has done his job. Emotion in music is
not dictated by notes, but by the process in which a thought BECOMES a
    note...

..which brings us back to the ubiquitous shredder thread - Yngwie Malmsteen
is an infinitely inferior consummate guitarist than guys like, say, Petrucci
or Vai, for that very reason. Yes, he uses cool modes, scales, and
arpeggios (and that sweep-picking thing is SOOOO cool, dude), but he just
doesn't project emotion like JP or SV. I don't feel what YJM is playing, I
just hear it. Go see Steve Vai in concert and tell me you can't see how
much emotion is flowing from those fingers...

Do me a favor - bust out those old, dusty avant-garde jazz LP's and smoke
some weed! It just might expand your constipated noodle a bit... :)

If you cover the stickers with common clear sticky backed plastic. You can
get it from stationers as it is designed to cover paper, thus the glue that
it uses is very inert and has no effect on inks. I employed this technique
on by guitar backs to protect them back in my pre-PRS days! Or you could do
the Albert Lee thing and have a clear coat over them DOH!

I wasn't at this show, but I do know that when they were in
Budapest on the Infinity tour, they played LTE 1 before the show.
At that time it wasn't even released (I think). They also played "the
way it used to be", which was released.
So I guess they do this kind of stuff.

Wh-aaaaaat? "more adept Fates Warning"???? I hope you are confused

    Message-ID: <Pine.SGI.4.02.10002051358340.26818-100000@teflon.ucsb.edu>

Well, it was an interesting night, to say the least... due to bad traffic
(more on this later), I arrive at the Palace at about 7:50, which I
thought wasn't so bad, even when I saw the gargantuan line to get in. I
had no problem selling Matthias' ticket (he couldn't come as scheduled due
to some Visa problems in Deutschland), and waited in line w/ a couple of
cool fans whom I convinced that they were really missing out if they
hadn't heard Spock's Beard yet (which they hadn't). After waiting a
while, we finally got in and realized that the Dregs had already been
playing for some time - in fact, I only got to see the last two songs of
their set! I guess the 7:00 on the ticket meant _start_ time, not doors
    open.

An interesting thing happened while I waited for DT to come on... there
was a guy next to me who was fairly clean cut, who I was talking with for
a little while. A few minutes after we stopped chatting I felt him
leaning on me (kinda weird, I thought), and then when I turned around, he
collapsed to the floor. The guys around us and I picked him up, and he
seemed pretty out of it... I went to the bar to call for a medic, and by
the time we got back, the guy was passing out again, this time right into
one of the bouncer's arms. They carried him away, and I'm not sure if he
ever got to see the show...

DT's set was pretty cool - they ran straight through SfaM (with a
very cool solo from Jordan at one point), but part way through "The Spirit
Carries On", James left the stage, and never came back out. I was
wondering if something had happened to him, but then a few minutes later
Mike announced that the Fire Marshal was shutting down the show! He then
added that "they were going to keep playing until they were dragged off
the stage", and tried to sing James' parts (w/ help from the audience).
However, after the power to the PAs and then the monitors was cut, there
wasn't a whole lot they could do at that point. People were obviously
pretty pissed, and everyone stuck around for about another 1/2 hour to
find out why the show had been stopped (it definitely wasn't too crowded
in there - I was on the floor and I've seen _much_ more cramped places
than that). Finally a representative from the Fire Marshal told everyone
to leave, which was largely ignored until the cops showed up in riot
control gear. I left at that point, since I don't know what tear gas
smells (or feels) like, and I wasn't in the mood to find out just then. :)

That was all kind of a weird experience, but there was one more to
cap it off... as I got in my car and headed back to the 101 to go home,
I turned on my stereo, and to my surprise, it started playing again
during "The Spirit Carries On", almost _exactly_ at the point where the
band had stopped playing. It was just then that I realized I had shut off
my stereo on the way down to the show on the 101, so I could concentrate
completely on the (nasty) stop-and-go traffic. What a coincidence...

Hope tonights show at the Palace goes better!

    Paul
