I dont know how many of you guys out there like wrestling at all, but Y2J
Chris Jericho (from the WWF) happens to be a big DT fan. In fact he listed
SFAM as his favorite album of the year! Also, he said on his website that he
is going to attend the LA DT show and that if any of his fans are going that
they should introduce themseleves to him atthe show. I think this is pretty
cool of the guy. Also, it's cool to see someone out there endorsing the band
like that. I wouldn't be suprosed if there are at least a few people who go
to that show just to see Jericho. Hell, maybe they'll get converted when
    they're there!

    > Thats kind of rediculous I think.

You obviously only play a little guitar. Music does have what can be called
"laws". I prefer to call them guidelines. Some examples of musical
    guidelines are:

    1. Everytime you play a Dominant 13th chord, the chord will sound dissonant.

    2. Suspended chords don't sound resolved.

    3. C is not in the key of A major

    4. An Eb major chord sounds "out of place" (for lack of a better term) in
the key of A major but it works great in the keys of Bb, Ab and Eb.

    I could go on.

Music has "guidelines". Don't let this scare you. All it means is that
certain things can be done which yield the same results everytime. Science
calls these "laws". I only call them guidelines because one doesn't have to
follow them in the sense that one has to play a C# instead of a C natural
when playing a song that is in the key of A major. You can play anything you
want. It depends upon the sound that you want. With the example of playing a
C natural in a song that's in the key of A major, if you want the music to
sound bluesy or jazzy, there are ways to insert this note. If you don't want
the music to sound bluesy/jazzy, don't play the note. This is a guideline,
    law......call it whatever you want.

I do understand what you are saying. No one should write/play music
according to a prescribed formula. But at the same time, one should
understand the guidelines/rules. One should understand that a mixolydian
chord progression sounds way different than a phyrgian chord progression.
Phyrgian can sound like heavy metal, middle eastern or Spanish music.
Mixolydian can give a rock/blues sound. Know the rules and then use them in
any combination that suits you. *That* is where the creativity comes in.

    Hey folks...

Looking to do some Dream Theater CD, DAT, or _very_ rare cassette
trades. Plenty of DT and others to trade. I'm looking specifically for
current SFAM tour shows, but please send me a list of everything you've got
if you're interested in trading. My list is at

    http://www.mindspring.com/~alpine1 .

Please don't try to offer me Bahr boots... I've had all of them for quite
awhile but they're not on my list due to several factors (like most of them
aren't full shows and, in general, they suck anyway).

Take care all... (and see some of your at the Atlanta and Pompano DT shows!)

I plan on attempting to record the show at the Roxy on the 27th.
Unfortunately I don't know how to do it. If I'm really lucky, I can get a
hold of a DAT recorder, but I don't know what kind of things I have to do
to make a stereo recording. What kind of microphone do I need, and where
should I stand, and how far away should I be. Those are the kinds of
questions I need answered. I am not sure that I'll be able to do it, but
I'd LIKE to be able to record the show and possibly trade with others.

    Can anybody help me out?

Well, smart guy, had you spent the time doing your research, you would see, plain as day, that vindaloos (shipped straight from a suburb of Bombay) are one of the principal flavor enhancements in Progresso's lentil variety.

Ahh... fortunately I still have some KNAC bumper stickers left. KNAC was the last vestiges of anything close to a rock/metal station left in So Cal, unfortunately the airwaves are being taken over by Spanish stations here in LA.

Just a word about the Palace show on Friday... the show was stopped mainly because of KROQ night, a dance party type of thing... the club was most likely paid off by the radio station to stop DT and so the club payed the fire marshall to shut the show down... It has happened before while DT played there... I think the House of Blue was completely booked up for NAMM, therefore they couldn't get that venue...

Here we go again with stupidites, will it ever ends ... Some mindless comments on the topic just proved the fact that so many folks confuse good technician with good guitarist, which is funny and sad in the same time. It tears my heart to think that someone is a DT fan just because the guys happened to be good tehnicians. :(((

LED ZEPPELIN rules! Page was a mean dude, go listen White Summer/Black Mountain Side and tell me he's not a genius? He practically (along with 2, 3 others) invented the classic hard rock guitar.

As for Hammet, I think he should be on a 100 guitairtss list. The Unforgiven solo is some of the most emotional solos IMHO. And the guy CAN play. Or maybe COULD play. Seriously, did anyone noticed how bad he became in the last years? :( As I remember he was great guitarist in the Justice era and before, but now when I see him soloing, it's painful and SO unimaginative. :( I like him, but I just wonder what happened with him?

Some guy said Vai on his new concert did a BLACK DOG cover??? Tell me he does it on every gig of the tour? :)

------------ P.S. Moby Dick riff rules too! :)

And all hail the Marlboro Man, for without him your lungs might actually be pure and clean and not filled with tar, cancer, and throat polyps. Hail unto thee, Marlboro Man!

Really. IMO, Jimmy Page blew rectal thermometers. You know, I can accept that, yes, they influenced certain people yadda yadda yadda. BUT, don't try and cram that "he is so great" bullshit down people's throats. "Wah! You have to like him because your favorite player liked him!" Then down the line, when you hear that Englebert Humperdinck inadvertantly influenced Jimmy Page, and I hear you say, "Egad, I hate that guy" I'll be first in line to wave your own flag in your face. How's that sound? :)

I mean, really, I don't expect you to like the Kool-Aid Man simply because Bill Cosby's Jell-O Jigglers could give your breath long lasting freshness like Big Red. Jeez.

    > Yo guys, got that??? Remember that, it was on the FRONT breast!

Yah. Unfortunately for Eckie he has to wear the shirt backwards. He's always being mistaken for a hunchback when in reality he is a "back breasted male." Kind of a rare occurance. Perhaps the future of evolution, who knows. Makes sense. That way your papoose can nurse while getting a piggy back ride. What'll they think of next? -- KorgX3 think fresh goes better with life...

My opinion of the man: sloppy but cool. I LOVE his acoustic guitar sound though. no complaints there.

Caught the DT show tonite at maritime hall. and for the past hour and a half I've been tryingto come up with a single word to describe it and no one can seem to suffice. As every body knows already is they open with the entire sfam album, what I couldn't have possibly immagined was that they would supass the expectations of not only myself but anybody else I talked to after. First off James Labrie, how any vocalist can go from flawless to astonishing is quite simply that! Jordan Rudess showed why he IS THE MAN. I was floored by his solo not only a top notch preformer but a showman as well. John Patrucci proved everyone who has been complaining about his exclusion from that 100 greatest guitarist list 1000% correct and for mike and John Myung I'll say this I've seen Rush and their rythm section (we all know who I'm talking about) and I have never seem those guys any where near as tight! an absolutly amazing show where the guys just didn't miss! probably the most flawless show I've seen in at least a decade and I've seen several hundered! If you havn't got tickets, sell the TV, the car or a kidney or all three if you want merch it's all well worht it! __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? In the last Ytsejam, Dmitri ranted thusly: > How can you over sell a show! Are they morons?!!

Hmm. I think a post was just placed earlier which enclosed a reply from people at the venue, claming the show was not over-sold at all. But from my own experience, it was pretty damn crowded in there. People were being moved off of hallways and stairwells, and it was tough to find a place on the floor where we could actually see the band play. The balcony was packed full.

I seriously doubt these people are morons. They want happy customers and continued business.

So I guess my first question is, were you actually there? You weren't, were you? I was. I flew from Portland (Oregon) to Los Angeles to see them play, and it was awesome. I wasn't pissed off, and neither were more than half of the people we ran into, outside the venue, after we were being steered outside.

For your information, the band got a loud CHEER and constant applause when the house P.A. was finally shut off during "Spirit Carries On", and they did their best to valiantly play on in the face of adversity. Kudos to Mike for singing and keeping the music going anyway.

    > I have been reading these posts on this list and from other people, and man > that's a fuckin drag! Why would anyone oversell a venue? Answer: Cause they

    > are greedy, and the more money the better!

See above. Purposely overselling a venue is a short-term gain which has long-term consequences. They run the risk of not only shutting down one event, but if the fire marshal finds that they purposely created unsafe conditions (which I doubt they did), they could be shut down permanently.

What this means is that it'll be *that* much harder for any band -- not just Dream Theater -- to play in Hollywood next time around. There is a fixed number of venues in the area, and that determines to gets to play and when. Think about that. The Palace isn't in the business of running themselves out of business.

There is a reason that buildings (and clubs) have a "Maximum Occupancy Limit" posted inside the facility. If there were an emergency (fire, riot, or whatever) and people needed to evacuate quickly, I doubt we could have left the floor in time. More people would have been injured.

    > I feel sorry for the people who went to go see a great concert, and were > robbed of it. It's not the fans, but it's DT as well. They didn't want to > cut the show short! It's really not the fire marshalls fault, but that of > the venue. I don't know the whole story, but I would say that the fans, and

    > the band got it up the ass.

I wasn't robbed. I willingly paid to see Dixie Dregs and Dream Theater, and I enjoyed the show immensely. It was a real treat to see Metropolis 2 performed live, and even though we didn't get to hear "Finally Free" or any encores, it was still awesome. The band might have been shafted from the deal, but I sure didn't find anything odd near my nether regions.

Perhaps you should reconsider (1) the facts, and (2) possible reasons for shutting down a venue.

    > The fans and DT were both screwed. I bet that DT plays again there and > makes sure the place isn't oversold. Hopefully the rest of the tour isn't > like that. I tell you what, if they over sell the Chicago show and cut it > short, I really don't think the people here are going to tolerate it. Fuck > the venue and the people in charge.

I hope DT's next experience there (or anywhere) doesn't get oversold either. But that kind of attitude is what made the police in riot gear necessary.

Come on. This is a concert, not a life and death matter. All of us at the first Palace concert got to see them play, and it was wonderful. It doesn't need to be the source of violence or other drastic measures. If nobody else had to breathe in tear gas at a concert, this world would be just a bit better.

    > Who wants to go to any concert and see it cut short. If there is anyway to > screw this venue over, I hope it's done. I hope no band plays there ever.

Burn it to the ground, right? Torch the fucking place, will that fix it?

    > It would be great if a band said that there is no way they are going to > play at this venue becaue of what happened. It.should teach them a lesson, > hopefully.

And I'm sure stalking the families and children of the promoters and venue owners would be a perfectly acceptable method of "teaching them a lesson", wouldn't it?

I realize you're upset at this, but remember you weren't even there. You shouldn't be fighting this battle for us. Hopefully your show goes more smoothly than mine did. There isn't anything you (or anyone) can do to change the past.

    Sorry for the rant.

bad anology..if i were to run with your comparison i would say something like, "a trained dog is definately more addept than an untrained dog".. training constitutes understanding.. arguing "best guitarists ever", has to be argued from a place of understanding otherwise everyone give it up Green Day, because Billy Joe Armstrong "plays with such feeling" (can you see how this tends to be futile?)

    >>screw continuity, screw resolution, screw everything >>else. If a guitarist successfully projects the >>emotion he is trying to project, he has done his job. >>Emotion in music is not dictated by notes, but by the >>process in which a thought BECOMES a note...

yes..well under those conditions billy corgan is a mastermind, and all would bow before the altar of smashing pumpkins.. however, the thread this spawned from was "100 best guitarists of all time".. i don't feel that judging a guitarist by his thought process is a very good way of measuring the worlds 100 best guitarists of all time..

emotion's are too personal to take into account trying to determine who's "better".. when i ride the subway ever day there's this bum who sits there and plays a beat up old nylon string piece of shit that's totally out of tune and missing half it's stings, and the guy sings like a cow. i personally think the dirty bastard expresses so much more emotion that hammett will ever be albe to, so emotional comparison's are useless
