    Hey fellow Jammers,

I recently went to the website for Royal Hunt about a
month or so ago for the first time. In finding the
site they were having a lyrics contest, but to my
surprise it was ending in 4 days. That night I decided
to write something and left to think about what I was
going to write about. The next day I thought of an old
short story I had written years before that I didn't
do anything with. That next night I started writing it
and when I completed the first draft it was 665 words
long. I then went back to the page to find the rules
and found that it was to be 250 or less. I then began
to rewrite it again. The following night I rewrote it
for the last time, but it was still 665 or more, but I
broke it up into 6 parts.
That night I submitted Part 1 to the contest.
Last weekend I received an e-mail stating that I had
    come in third.
With the short time I had in writing this I was
    thrilled.
To read it yourself you can see Part 1 at
www.royalhunt.com from there click on the contest
    winners.
    Hope you all like it,
    The Wizard

Jimmy Page, good guitarist or a fake?

While holding my papers for tommorow exam (and daydreaming as usual
instead of studying) I remembered the jam harsh speaking on Page and
many more of the old company (Hendrix, Beatles, Pink Floyd ..). At the
same time I was listening a song. On the Knebworth Festival Concert in
1990 the performance of Genesis was stunning. The last song they play is
"Turn it on again/Medley". And I came up with a conclusion.

The medley they do is consisted of:
    - Everybody needs somebody (Solomone Bourke)
    - I can't get no satisfaction (Rolling Stones)
    - Twist and shout (Beatles)
    - I'll be there (I don't know original performer, ... anyone?
    - You lost that loving feeling (Everly Brothers?)
    - Pinball Wizard (The Who)
    - Midnight hour (Wilson Picket)

Take a good look. Here Genesis did a great retrospective into music
    history.
You can see on their faces they enjoy while playing these anthems. They
go nuts, the audience too, screaming when recognizing the tune the band
    jump into next.

    Evidence #2:
Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame (1992 I think), Aerosmith comes out to
welcome on stage the Led Zeppelin and give them the award. They started
speaking how much influence LZ had on them, and in a joke Joe Perry
turns back stage and asks Page: "So Jimmy, when are you going to teach
me to play Rain Song?" :) I don't doubt Perry can rip Rain Song by
himself, but think about WHY he said the joke on THAT song. I happen to
connect very much with this stuff. Because Rain Song is as first one
hell of a good song, awesome ballad, arrangmeneta from heaven, and
secondly - one weird song for playing, totally unorthodox, I just didn't
get it back in the time I tried learning it. And it was not me, the song
    is really tough.

The conclusion: I'm sorry to say, might sound arrogant or too harsh, but
the thing is that some jammers are still quite immature. By worshipping
Vai, Yngwie, and some no-name-bands guitarists which you happen to like
at this time, and at the same time spitting on Page, Hendrix, SRV,
Gilmour, Blackmoore it just plain insane. Why?
Music is a progress, evolution. Naturally, there are also side-effect
products which totally suck and have no quality by any universal
standard (insert here 80% of the present media pushed music), but in
general the music evolves, develops, grows.
The new bands stand on the foundation of their ancestors, they know
their roots and they go further, exploring and once in a while coming up
with new groundbreaking music, new genres. It's a natural process. YOU
ARE PRODUCT of something, and you are what you are because of that
something. You cannot spit on your roots, and that is that!!! (And the
US law or democracy doesn't apply here, this transcends the 2, so don't
even think of your oh-so-precious RIGHTS :)

Beatles, Hendrix, Queen, Pink Floyd - all these will remain forever in
the music history books. They are all ancestors of some of the bands we
like nowadays (DT ...) , and also they had ancestors themselves as well.

So as always said, it's fine if you don't like them but don't go on
making up proofs to support your theory that "These guys suck big
time!". It's very simple: R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Not much to ask.

    over and out.

For the curious the best radio station down here (its probably the smallest of the big stations),
has three 2 hour metal shows on a Wednesday night. The shows combined last week and
people voted for the best album of 99. SFAM came in at no 4 for 99.
The album came in behind Slipknot at 1, Machine Head at 2 and Nevermore at 3. This
isn't surprising because the hardcore audience is heaps larger than anything else and both
Nevermore and Slipknot graced us with tours. Pretty good job by Dream Theater though!

three complete songs over at mp3.com. We play a very melodic/progressive
metal and we would love it if you followed the link and checked these three
songs out. They are taken from our debut-CD, called "Fervent Dream".

    Thank you and take care!

the show? Drop me a private email.

Before the jam crashed last week, I sent a question regarding the Bahr
bootlegs and his use of non-DT material. Does anyone have a list of the
non-DT material he used and the boots they appeared on? If this has been
answered already, I missed it in the unsub jam crash. Can someone repost
this or send it to me personally? Thanks,

Okay, I'm going to go with the "Read the FAQ" answer on this one... It's
pretty likely that the answer to THIS question is going to be in it.

Lorenzo, go to www.dreamtheater.net and look for the FAQ... It's in the

How dissapointing. No Toronto, no Montreal on the North American Tour. Us
Canadian DT fans kinda feel left out ! So what better excuse than a Dream
Theater concert to hop in a car, drive 7 hours down I87 through the freak'n
Adirondacks in the middle of Winter for a 2 day trip to see the best band
ever in NYC ! DT haven't headlined a concert here in Montreal since Images
and Words, but usually go to Toronto. Oh well, it'll be sweeter in NY
anyway. By reading the newsletter, the concert sounds wicked ! Lets just
hope we don't get a repeat from the 1st LA concert !

    Sommes-nous les seuls ? Surement pas ! Ecrivez-moi !

    Cheers !

Sorry to send this out but you might be interested in it. They have a
progressive rock station that I have heard DT, Queensryche and RUSH on!

    There's a company called RadioFreeCash.com (www.radiofreecash.com)
that is paying you to listen to the radio on your computer... and not
only do they pay you, but they also pay you for the referrals who you
bring to their community. This could mean serious cash for you,
especially if you get in early.

You've probably all heard of other companies that pay you to surf the
net and all the money people are making because they got in early.
Well, radiofreecash.com is even better, because all you have to do is
listen to the radio, which frees you up to do other stuff, like surf
the net, write your term paper, pay the bills, email friends - whatever!
They realize that your time is valuable, and they know that paying you
for it is the best way to get you to listen - they are effectively
starting a revolution in radio, and you should get in early - I did,
    and you can too!

Just go to their website and sign up! Oh, and please use this link with
my referral number so I get credit for having referred you... it's

I have to agree. The number one thing that bugs me about Jordan is I think
he's >too< good, if that's possible. That mofo intimidates the hell out of
me... Generally when I hear people like Petrucci, KevMo, etc. play it gets
me all motivated to run and jump on their respective instrument and imitate
them, but when I hear Jordan play, I start packing up my X3 to go trade at
the pawn shop for some old Milli Vanilli CD's. And he's real cocky, too.
    He >knows< he's damn good.

It's like being intimidated about getting in the ring with Hulk Hogan
because he's got those 24" pythons, but then discovering that the bastard's
    also 6'-8" to boot. Yipe!

Maybe Jimmy Page couldn't rip through scales in 16ths at 180 bpm with perfect alternate picking (I'm talking about him in his heyday, not like he's dead). Maybe he isn't the greatest solo developer and his runs are a bit messy at times. But he has done so much for so many people, including John Petrucci and other physics and logic defying individuals. Hendrix wasn't better than Petrucci, Satch, or Vai is today, but its what he's done for rock music as a whole. Led Zepellin took what 50's and 60's rock did, and turned up the juice. Then the next generation of musicians did likewise, and you get the idea. As for Kirk Hammett: he has been, at times, excluding his recent work in which he thinks he's SRV, a brialliant lead player. His three best outings are defnitely RTL, MOP, and Justice. He may not be incredible, but it's not fair to say that the only thing that makes him sound good is his rig.

You got that right, Mister ;-) I got all three LTE gigs as mp3s, and Jordan is simply unbelievable. But so is the whole band, can't take that away from them...

That solo Jordan rips off in either German or was it Luxembourg show (there were couple of those november shows in Bogie's site) is gorgeous !!!! He's the man :-)

Folks of the Dream Theater Mailing List,

Hi, I'm new to the list and wondering if any of you folks are willing to trade bootlegs of Dream Theater shows in return for bootlegs of Genesis shows. I don't know how many of you out there are Genesis fans, but if you would like to trade then please e-mail me privately and I'll provide you with my bootleg trading list.

    ~Doug Melvin

I have to agree with Matthew Schnoor. I was at the show (both of them actually). And as pissed as I was that the place closed down, it was one of the coolest musical experiences I ever had, when Mike and the guys kept playing, he asked the crowd to sing, and the whole place was singing the song, all the way thru. I really hope the band could hear the crowd. It was just totally amazing. That glimpse of how tight the band is with its fans, and vice versa, was easily worth the price of my ticket.

Of course, I also had the benefit of knowing I was going to see them the next night. :-)

My take on the situation was that it was closed down due to too many people on the dance floor. Because on Saturday night, they gave out a limited number of passes to get there (the floor), and you couldn't get there without a pass. No such deal on Friday. But given that situation, my question is, why not just ask some of the crowd to go upstairs? I'm sure most people would rather do that than have the show stopped...

We'll never know the truth, most likely. I've just got to say that the band ruled for continuing to play for as long as they did.

Meanwhile, the band has truly outdone themselves on this tour. I've seen them 3 times previously (Images and Words tour at the Troubadour, Awake at the Ventura Theater, and FII at the House of Blues), and this is easily the best they've played, performed, and sounded. I think Jordan has been an immense kick in the ass to everyone in the group. They were all tearing it up, and so incredibly tight - as opposed to OiaLT, which sounds a bit ragged and sloppy in comparison. I hope they record some of these shows. For those with a chance to see any remaining shows, please do so. You will not be sorry.

As a side note, anyone else at both LA shows - did you notice how much better the Dregs were the second night? I was really disappointed with them on Friday - especially the keyboard player - his keys sounded out of tune half the time. Everyone else was good individually, but they were really sloppy bandwise. But Saturday they kicked ass. I guess Friday was the first time they had played together in a while.

Back to DT. I wonder who came up with the light show - it was one of the best I've ever seen...

    Okay, back to work...

Oh, yeah, Chris Jericho was there. I wish I had known he wanted fans to talk to him. I usually try to ignore celebrities when I see them - you know, let them have their privacy and all. Oh well, it was cool to find out he's a huge DT fan.

Another thing I noticed. I think DT is the only band I've ever seen that get a room full of guys to clap their hands. Especially musicians here in LA. I've seen it from both sides, a bunch of musicians in the crowd, standing there, refusing to be impressed. Not so at a DT concert...

After seeing both shows, I ended up buying a seven string yesterday. It's a blue flame top Ibanez S-7 420 or something - I can never remember those numbers. It's a lot of fun... I also bought a set of the Roland V custom electronic drums, and a small Yamaha PA system for my band. That's right, $5700 gone in one afternoon. :-) Good thing DT only comes around every couple of years! Talk about inspiration - I always seem to go gear happy after I see them. But then again, I've never regretted a post DT show purchase, either...

And yet another thing - Someone (Simon?) mentioned many jams back about what a great, bad-ass tone Petrucci finally has on SFaM. I can't agree more. And it's even more intense live. It'll tear your head off!!! But in a good way :-)

It's a very good point. One should know some of the theory before deciding what to obey, what to rewrite, and what to discard entirely. Music is much like grammar, and you're free to ignore the bounds of either, but whether you actively choose to do so (poetics) or do so out of poor habit or ignorance (slang) can make quite a difference in the final product.

    I think I will.

Yeah, he does a column in Metal Edge every issue. This issue I got the other day, he ranked his top albums each year in the 90's. He did have a lot of nice things to say about DT, including his fave albums of 1994 and 1999 being Awake and SFAM, respectively. I&W was runner-up in 1992 to Kiss "Revenge". Probably the biggest surprise to me was that his fave album of 1996 was the Rush "Working Man" tribute!! The man has exquisite taste. :-) 'Cept for the fact that Stryper "Against the Law" beat out Megadeth "Rust In Peace" for 1990 album of the year. D'Oh!!! ;-)

All rock musicians had to hold a day job before they made it big. Hey, blowing rectal thermometers is serious business, somebody has to do it! AND, it's an honest living!

Or the difference between Mr. T 'cuz he shot blanks and nobody ever got killed, and Hawkeye Pierce 'cuz he was such a cynical preachy bastard. Niether of 'em had a Sword of Omens though. Don't belittle my people you bastard! Pretty soon...WE'LL ALL BE back breasted males! I'm also in a good paying medical program, just think: a genetic mutation for live cultivated breast implants. $3000 per boob on this back. :) I am God's gift to small chested women!

It also makes for performing some sweet sweet solo tricks that none of you meer mortals can do! Sure, Hendrix could play with his teeth...

..but could he do the reversible man boob technique? I THINK NOT!

Now what the hell am I missing about the "front left breast" business? Dream Theater rules.

~Eckie knows how to cover his own ass. And boob.

that's exactly what i was trying to get across.. "do whatever the fuck you want if it's inside context".. my agruement against hammett was that he does nothing inside any context, because it's obvious he has no idea what the hell he's doing, and certainly is not one of the 100 best players this world has ever seen..

Since my last posting probably didn't get to a lot of people due to the whole debacle with the subscriber list, I'd like to make one last plea to any Lansing MI. area jammers going to the show in Detroit. I'm giong to be in Lansing for two days (17th and 18th) and would greatly appreciate any help from locals getting to and from the show. I will certainly help with gas, food, whatever. I'm from western Canada, a place where DT gigs are about as frequent as Unicorn sightings. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me- help me please!!!!!!! Mail me privately if you are willing to help out.
