Alright, my opinion is the dude has shown he can play, he probably got
neo-classical shred burn out during AJFA or the tour of that album,
(can't blame him, remember how many people poofed up their hair and went
tap crazy back then), and like all artistic-minded artists (see also,
redundant terms) he went onto other things, mainly...
slide guitar + his cherished wah wah pedal. But this slide wah stuff is
just soooooooo uninspiring for me and like minded individuals, thus
generating the "HE SUCKS!" comments and tagging "kick me!" signs on the
back of him whenever we walk past him in the middle of LA.
You could relate it to the era switching from classicism and renaissance
thinking to modernism and post classicism in art and painting,
actually. When all these artists like Picasso and Brach came out with
these new cubist and futurist ideas, their contemporaries (mainly
bourgeois and politicians) were calling it degenerative and a childish
regression of human thought. And then Hitler began kicking artists out
of Nazi Europe.
So nowadays we have bands like Red Hot Chile Peppers and Metallica
producing music that a lot of people don't like, a lot of other people
don't understand but try to enjoy it, and a lot of people who could care
less about it. They suck they rule, blah blah blah!
What do you listen to music for? Dancing? Sulking? Getting the
creative juices flowing while you're hunched over a drafting table in an
architecture studio? Masturbating to childrens' Bibles?
The defense rests, you Honor!

Hi,
Let first say that DT were at their best Friday night. I only wish that I could
have seen the entire concert. I just read Paul Evans' post--he must have been
on the dance floor the whole time.
"But given that situation, my
question is, why not just ask some of the crowd to go upstairs? I'm sure
most people would rather do that than have the show stopped..."
I was upstairs and was told to go downstairs because there weren't any seats
left upstairs. This happened at the end of the Dregs set(of which I got to see
one song). It was standing room only up there. It wasn't unitl the fire marshall
got there that the staff cared whether we were standing or not. At any rate, my
friend and I made it downstairs. After about a half hour of DT's set, my
friend(not a DT fan) went to the outside bar to get both of us some drinks. When
he tried to get back, they wouldn't let him on the floor or upstairs. In my
opinion, the venue overbooked the show. Maybe they let in the legal capacity of
the building(including the lobby and bars), but the area from which we could
view the show was clearly overcrowded.
BTW Did anybody notice the fire marshall taking pictures from the top of the
stairway?
Hopefully DT will return to LA for a second leg of this tour.
Cheers,
James

Just a reminder to everyone. MIME encoded messages are not allowed on
the Ytsejam. I have a filter in place to block these from ever
getting to the list. If you don't see your posts on the jam, please
make sure you have MIME encoding (HTML formatting/etc) OFF before
sending mail to the jam. I have seen about 10 rejections in the last
few days, so I thought I would remind everyone :)

Even though I mainly listened to KIIS staples like Madonna and George Michael and in the 80's, I have fond memories of listening to Pirate Radio in day care (in 5th grade!) Although I really hate what KROQ has turned into, I can't hate the station too much; after it, I discovered Stabbing Westward, Nine Inch Nails and Tool by listening to KROQ.

LOL!!! the expressions people come up with to describe how they feel about music...Anyways, hi all! I'm a new subscriber to the jam and kind of a new DT fan. I have to give all my thanks to my boyfriend for opening up these musical doors for me. Although I can't exactly say that Jordan makes me go "wee wee" :-)I'd have to agree that he is the best keyboard player alive. Being a classical pianist I swore that I would never like anything that wasn't played on a grand. IMO, keyboards were an untalented players' attempt to cover up bad technique and undeveloped interpretational skills. However, a few listens to Rudess Morgenstein project and I was sold. A while later when Jordan joined the band I became and instant DT fan. Jordan is an amazing pianist and keyboardist and he is such an asset to the band. Let the man be cocky! He's heads and tails above any pianist I've heard ! I can't wait for the Milwaukee and Chicago shows so I can witness the genious in action!!! hope to see some of you there! Sarah

Sorry if I'm stepping on any toes here. I haven't seen any organized effort to get together before the gig so I thought I'd send out a reminder. I talked to Chris Ptacek earlier about getting together and he had a couple of ideas.
If we wanted we could get together at the Rock Bottom Brewery like the Minneapolis crowd. It's right downtown and the L train (the red route) that runs by the Riveria stops right outside of it. Plus it's really close to the hotel I'm staying in. If anyone's interested or has any better ideas, let me know. I'll keep a list of all the folks that are interested. If things are going well, you should be able to email us all at mailto:chicagoshow@klindt.org.

Hey, Living in Chicagoland, I listen to Mancow every morning to get me going. In case you don't know, he has a big morning talk show syndicated around the US. He talks a lot about sex & politics. He mentioned that he was going to talk about his new favorite wrestler, Chris Jericho. I'm not a big fan of Jericho's except that he is a huge DT fan. By the way, I never, evvvvver miss an episode of WWF. Well, Mancow preceded to explain the whole Palace show in LA. He may have exaggerated the facts, as he often does, but he ended his show with this story. He mentioned the new album and said it was great. He explained a little about the band. He explained how they hit it big a few years ago with Pull Me Under. It was really great to hear a 5-7 minute segment about DT on the radio. He has never mentioned them before but I went nuts when he was explaining the situation. It was also the first time I had heard about the incident in LA. It is nice to know that the millions-----and millions (big wrestling plug) of people tuned into Mancow just before he went off the air talking about our boys. Well, that was my excitement for the day. See ya at the show Sunday-if you are going.

THe venue is probably telling the truth when they say that c. 950 tickets were SOLD for the show. Note the emphasis. The DT show was the same weekend as the NAMM Convention, and it is standard industry practice to give away many, many complimentary passes to shows that occur during industry events (I've seen it here before, with the Gavin Convention and with NAMM).
The fault may not lie with the venue at all, but with the promoter......but in any case, someone was dangerously negligent in allowing too many people into the venue.
>I flew from Portland (Oregon) to Los Angeles to see them play, >and it was awesome. I wasn't pissed off, and neither were more than >half of the people we ran into, outside the venue, after we were being steered >outside.
You're a finer man than me, Matt..... I'd have been pretty upset if I'd flown that far to see only half a show; a partial refund at the very least is due the entire audience -- whether it's from the venue or the promoter would be a legal issue, the fact is, SOMEONE was criminally negligent.
>See above. Purposely overselling a venue is a short-term gain which has >long-term consequences. They run the risk of not only shutting down one >event, but if the fire marshal finds that they purposely created unsafe >conditions (which I doubt they did), they could be shut down permanently.
If the venue contained an audience above fire-capacity, which apparently it did (you stated yourself that it was awfully crowded), then someone created unsafe conditions. You're correct in that the venue stands to lose a lot for this (their email implied that they might have already caught some hell) -- personally I suspect it was the promoter and all those freebie NAMM passes.
>I wasn't robbed. I willingly paid to see Dixie Dregs and Dream Theater, and >I enjoyed the show immensely. It was a real treat to see Metropolis 2 >performed live, and even though we didn't get to hear "Finally Free" >or any encores, it was still awesome.
--But certainly anyone who paid full price for a full-length show would be entitled to feel somewhat robbed. After all, they paid for a full experience and didn't receive it. This part seems pretty straightforward, regardless of your personal feelings in the matter. (I'd have been pretty angry myself, not to the point of damaging anything, but definitely annoyed...and most people I know would have been annoyed as well.)
As a veteran of the infamous Birch Hell Xmas show in Old Bridge NJ, I regard ANY overselling of a venue as a monstrous act. If reports were accurate, THAT show saw c. 2,000 tickets sold for a club that can hold perhaps 800 max. I was on the floor and it was so packed you couldn't breathe without using your arms and elbows to "clear a space" around your chest and diaphragm. I eventually went to the back, where at least you could breathe -- shutting THAT show down would have been a mercy, and in that case the venue would have been the responsible party. Reason notwithstanding, THEY'RE still in business, too.....

Let me put this issue to rest by saying that in the last 30 years, Hollywood clubs have rarely sold out because of the fact that they will pack the damn venue till people are hanging off the rafters and the only time they break up such gatherings are because they themselves call the fire marshall...
When Fear Factory sold out the House of Blues, I was stunned, but on the monitors I could see that the mosh pit was packed so tight it literally looked like a sea of people...

I heard, and almost saw, this band at the ProgPower Festival in Tilburg, The Netherlands. "Almost" because they were the first band to play on either stage, and they drew a big crowd into the room with the smaller stage, so we had to be content with standing in the back just outside the door and listening. They sounded excellent and I bought the Fervent Dream EP, which is quite good. There are some death-metal style vocals, but the music makes it easy to overlook them (if you're one of those who has to :)).
Good way to start off the day at ProgPower, too. :) My page of commentary and photos from the festival is at www.crl.com/~vanyel/images/progpowr/

Okay. Can someone tell me the proper way to pronounce Jordan's names? Down here in the land of cotton, the name Jordan is usually pronounced "JUR-dun" but I would like to know how people who can actually speak English would say it. And is his last name "RU-dess" or "ru-DESS". My feeble, inquiring mind would like to know. Thanks in advance, btw.
I'll try again - is there some sort of pre-show gathering in the works for the West Palm beach show on March 5?

One of my classmates pointed this out to me at 4 am in the wee hours of the Arizona morning, and it sounded so damn close I thought I'd share this horrible act of comparison to those who wish to read it.
Ready? *skip this part if you wish to keep that song in a sacred viewpoint* .......... The melody line in "Beyond This Life," to "All that we learned this time, is carried beyond this life" sounds eerily close to that Blink 182 melody, "I'm sleeping with no clothes ooooooon, and blah blah blah blah blah blaaaaaaaaaaaah!" ..........
Or it could just be the sleep deprivation kicking in. With his good friend Mr. Flu!
~Eckie thinks he just sacrificed his own soul to the wrath of the Ytsejam, but it won't matter, this flu will kill him in his sleep before the nukes hit
