    Hey Mark,

I don't know anything about a pre-show gathering, but I do know that I will be there with some friends having trekked from NY so if you find out about anything going on, please let me know. The only people I know going are yourself and Adam Pye. Do you know of anyone else?

    BTW - I believe it's RU-dess. But what do I know!

Who's planning on making the trek to the New Haven and Boston shows? How bad is the General Admission for DT shows? I've been to seem them a few times now but it was always seated.. I'm thinking a few hours ahead of time is good for a nice place on the floor..

Jordan is pronounced JOR - din. Listening to Mike on his home video Rudess is just sort of unaccented - roodis or something. Anyone notice how all the members of Dream Theater have cool names - Petrucci, Portnoy, Rudess, Myung, LaBrie. Very exotic. Maybe thats why Kevin Moore left. Probably Derek Sherinan's name was too good.

    - Andrew Lawrence (what a boring silly name)

I'm glad you liked our performance but even more sad of the fact that you had to stand outside the door... :-( I know many people have a hard time accepting the deathvocals (or what you prefer to call them) but I think one has to get used to the way they are used. If you after all decide that you donj't like them maybe there is some comfort in the fact that they will not appear that often on the next record.

    >Good way to start off the day at ProgPower, too. :) I must say the same. I enjoyed this day VERY much and there were a lot of great bands there! Looking forward to go there next year!

Yup, I was. And thanks for the rest of your info. I didn't ever look behind me, my eyes were glued to the stage, and I didn't know that all that happened upstairs. I was just assuming that the overcrowding of the floor was the problem, since they limited access to it on Saturday... That really sucks... So, who's fault was it? The Palace, or Ticket Bastard? We already know Ticket Bastard sucks...

Yeah, they (DT) were just as hot Saturday. I wish you could have seen that as well...

BTW, the cops and fire marshall were there Saturday night as well. Just checking up, I guess.

Note the emphasis. The DT show > was the same weekend as the NAMM Convention, and it is standard > industry practice to give away many, many complimentary passes to > shows that occur during industry events (I've seen it here before, > with the Gavin Convention and with NAMM).

Well, from all the research I did, no passes were given out to NAMM attendees. I'm sure some were given out to record company people and such, but certainly not in a number that would so greatly swell the crowd that it would cause the show to be shut down. Besides, Friday night was the big NAMM "Millennium" concert, where most of the attendees were headed anyway. Everything points to the club/promoter being greedy and overselling the show. After attending the Saturday show, and seeing the "care" that the staff of The Palace showed towards the crowd, I'm sure all the blame can be placed at their doorstep. It certainly cannot be placed upon the band (as some have suggested) or on the fans themselves (which I have seen suggested in other places, and find this to be very odd).

I'm writing up a review of NAMM and the DT show for later posting, but I will say now that I'm amazed that Saturday's show didn't get shut down. We were in the balcony (after walking around for NAMM for three straight days there was no way I was going to stand through a show), and before DT started, all of the stairways and most of the aisles were packed with people. This is, of course, a safety hazard, and is the sort of thing you'd think the place would be looking out for after the events of the first night. Making this worse was the fact that all the people standing around were blocking the view of the people in the seats, and you have the possibility of a very bad situation starting. People sitting around us went down to complain to the management, who were told that "security" will deal with it. To that point, the "security" staff that was patrolling the area consisted of one very small woman who would not appear intimidating to a house cat. Eventually, they sent another guy up, and first were making people sit down in the aisles and stairways. Once DT started, they began moving the people in the aisles somewhere (I have no idea where, except I guess to the main floor). Most of the stairways around us were full of people for the whole show.

In my experience, the average club owner is concerned with one thing and one thing only: how much money they can make. Anything else, including the comfort and safety of their patrons, is secondary. Yes, they won't try to actually kill anyone at the show (though I think a lot of them would rather kill bands than actually have to pay them), but if there's a way to get away with something and pocket the cash, chances are they'll do it.

I don't know either, but honestly, that's how it sounded. I think he was playing a Fender Rhodes when things sounded bad, but I wasn't paying close attention to his gear... I do know that one instrument being slightly out of tune can make even the tightest band sound sloppy, due to all the weird harmonics and overtones clashing with each other...

Oh, and I forgot to mention, that the guy doing the mix for them should be shot, cuz he fully screwed up a bunch of solos by not boosting the right guy until halfway thru... He was much better Saturday as well, but still missed a few beginnings of solos.

Hello All! I am new to this list- however not to Dream theater at all. I wanted to share some thoughts on the current discussion about whether or not a guitarist should be deemed good or bad, but first- I want to respond to some of greg's comments.

    >You obviously only play a little guitar.

How can you possibly say this to someone? Beyond being an extremely damaging thing to say to someone- you have proved that you think you are better off because you know music theory ( As a semi-long tangent- Dominant 13ths can be particularly great sounding on dominants like in the standard, "invitation" during the B section. Also, 13ths are a great way of coloring big band trumpet and trombone writing on a held Dominant chord. For example, you can spread the trombones so that they are fitted into a drop 2 voicing of the Basic 4 note voicing, and make the trumpets form the upper extensions of the chord by using a 9th, 11th, and 13th, with the 4th trumpet doubling the lead. It works particularly well when a chord is held for a longer period of time.). Back to the subject- Theory counts for nothing to musicians like Cal Collins for example. Cal is a jazz guitarist that learned COMEPLETLY by ear, and plays better than a lot of other musicians can. Louis Armstrong learned completly by ear as well, and led a whole new movement and helped standardize (for lack of a better term) a system of American Improvised music. Jimi learned by ear too. Theory is a lot in music, but it's not everything. Just because a person knows it, doen't make them superior to anybody else, ever.

But back to the original argument; Can one type of music (or guitarist) be superior to another, so much that it/he/she can be ranked on a contest platform? Nope. Music is special to everyone in their own way, and to rank it would be unfair, just like it is unfair to rank guitarists, just like its unfair to shun another guitarist just because they may or may not know their theory (we always are in a state of learning new stuff- greg, me, college professors, composers, and everyone). Any art is the same way. Just because we react to art differently doesn't make it any better than any other kind of art. Whether its a waterfall painting, or a picture of a bowl of fruit, both give some sort of electrical impulse to our brain, and then we decide if we like it or not. Does that give us the right to say that one is better than the other??? NO! Its the same with music. I honestly try very hard to appreciate a type of music even if I don't like it. But if I try- who knows? Maybe I will love it! Whether its Dream theater's brand of Progressive Rock, Rodrigo's concerto de aranjuez, john coltrane's recording of Giant steps, Tori Amos's Album "little earthquakes," the latest folk album from Dar Williams, the free jazz jam that I just had the chance to attend, its all music to me! I love a lot more of music as a result. I definitly agree that music speaks to us in a rather emotional way, because if it didn't- we wouldn't be here discussing how we feel about a certain guitarist, or musician! We all love the way petrucci plays, or else We wouldn't be on this list! LAstly- I want to bring up the instance involving "blind Melon." At one point in their careers, they were asked by a guitar magazine to do a review of dreamtheater's "pull me under," amongst other current singles. Thier thoughts on what DT plays would be enough to anger anyone on this list, however john Petrucci himself responded to that article. Don't quote me on this because I don't have the transcript, but Petrucci said basically to the effect of- we won't ever put down any type of music just because we don't like it (obviously in responce to blind melons carnal hate of DT!). I think I owe myself to not be a snob about music, and appreciate it as others may. I won't ever rank any guitarist as being superior to another. If someone out there digs a certain guitarist, then that guitarist should be the #1 ranked guitarist of all time and if not- then obviously they are mad, like the Ytsejam community is about JP NOT being on the top 100 of all time at all. (And by the way- I wasn't terribly happy that Petrucci was not on there- he's my #1 fav of all time)

I guess we can be thankful that we aren't shot for our opinions, because if we were- I'd be a dead man. Sorry for writing a novel, but its been bugging me a lot.

    >Alright, my opinion is the dude has shown he >can play,

how so? he certainly has shown he can noodle around a fretboard..but "play"..no, not by any serious standards

    >he probably got neo-classical shred burn out >during AJFA or the tour of that album,

don't get me wrong..i don't think neo-classical shred is the appitomy of music, but it does take a lvl of comptance that mr. hammett does not possess.. you can hear him pushing his limits when he actually uses that 2 and 6 on the natural minor scale (in other words..he's a fuckin pentitonic boy to boot).. there's no way he could even begin to comprehend any usage of a melodic-minor or diminished scale (in other words..associating kirk hammett with neo-classical music is ludicrous)

    >(can't blame him, remember how many people poofed >up their hair and went tap crazy back then), and >like all >artistic-minded artists (see also, >redundant terms) he went onto other things, mainly...

whether or not he "looked" like a shred head at some point doesn't mean he was one..again i'm not holding shred up upon high, just recognizing that it takes some compitance to burn like Yngwie or Bellas

    >slide guitar + his cherished wah wah pedal. But >this slide wah stuff is just soooooooo uninspiring >for me and like minded individuals, thus >generating the "HE SUCKS!" comments and tagging >"kick me!" signs on the back of him whenever we >walk past him in the middle of LA.

my "HE SUCKS!" are generated by the fact that he genuinly sucks..always has >You could relate it to the era switching from >classicism and renaissance thinking to modernism >and post classicism in art and painting, actually. >When all these artists like Picasso and Brach came >out with these new cubist and futurist ideas, >their contemporaries (mainly bourgeois and >politicians) were calling it degenerative and a >childish regression of human thought. And then >Hitler began kicking artists out of Nazi Europe.

ack..kirt hammett IS childish in his understanding of music..he examplifies undeveloped playing technique..he screams to be beat with a stick..

    >So nowadays we have bands like Red Hot Chile Peppers >and Metallica producing music that a lot of people >don't like, a lot of other people don't understand >but try to enjoy it, and a lot of people who could >care less about it. They suck they rule, blah blah >blah!

i like the RHCP..good vibe :).. i even like some Metallica..and yeah.. blah blah blah.. this thread is getting burnt out

    >What do you listen to music for? Dancing? >Sulking? Getting the creative juices flowing while >you're hunched over a drafting table in an >architecture studio? Masturbating to childrens' >Bibles? > >The defense rests, you Honor!

i'll stick to the original topic which was "does hammett deserve to be considered one the worlds 100 best guitarist".. and i still maintain that there are THOUSANDS of guitarists that are far superior to him..my purpose for listening to music doesn't add or take away from this..

    Yo, Jamophiles!

It might be true, that the DT-Content gets the short end of the stick in the Jam and its contents. But you make me laugh so much anyway, that I won't unsub. You are really funny guys, just had to mention that.

btw.: who agrees that we should create a website with the definition of 'progressive' for all those people who keep asking from time to time? If anyone has a good explanation, email me.

For any MN, WI or IL fans....

Some friends(?) bailed on me, so I've got two extra tix to the Milwaukee show. Why should you care? If you're in MN, and are going to the MPLS show (or not), how often do we get to see such a phenomenon as DT? I've got the tix, and possibly even the wheels (I'm leaving St. Paul at noon the 12th). If you're in Chicago, it's what, two hours for you? This is DT we're talking about! Or maybe some of you know someone that wants to go, but hasn't gotten tix yet. Anyway...I could use the help, and you could stand to see them more than once (it's the weekend, come on!)

I'd really hate to see them go to waste......

Get ahold of me, any help would be great........
