            Hello friends,

I was wondering if someone could give me a recomendations
for internet radio stations. Write to me on the Jam, or privately if
you know a cool station. It may be progressive, or anything else
    you think is really good.
I never really listened much to these radios, so I guess it is
    time to start.
            Thanks in advance
            Tibor

I have never though much of Security at events since I went to a Van Halen concert at Merryweather Post many years ago. We were on the lawn and some drunk idiots behind us accidently dumped their Wild Turkey spiked coke on us (which they never should have had in the first place.) I tried to get security to throw them out, but those gutless bastards didn't want to take a step on the lawn. We ended up having to leave, because the blanket just reeked of Wild Turkey. I've vowed never to go back and I've been able to keep that word for 5 years.

If you see me, say hey! I'm really hard to miss.

If you see some freaky chick with half red, half blond hair, that's me. If
you see that freaky chick along with a very goth-looking pale curly black
haired girl and a tall lanky guy with hair all the way down his back, then
    it's DEFINITELY me.

I'm pretty obnoxious and pretty congenial.

And if anyone is planning on doing anything afterwards, gimme some plans,

    Hey -

This message is for any Boston Jammers out there. Or for any Jammer familiar
with the Roxy in Boston. There's a chance that I may be heading out to
Boston with some people for the upcoming DT show, and I have a few questions
about the venue. First, I was wondering how big the place was? If it's
really tiny, that could seriously impact when we'd want to get there in line
to get in the joint. Secondly, is there any kind of balcony and/or tables or
chairs? I have been to the Chance on several occasions to see DT, and
there's a nice balcony that we always try to get the railing on. I didn't
know if there was more than one level at the Roxy. And the reason I ask
about tables or chairs is because I may be going with my father who is a big
man with bad knees. I don't know if he can take standing the whole night,
and I want him to see the show.

Private e-mails please. Thanks in advance, friends!!

    Hello,

Ah, it's good to be back on the jam after about a year's absence. The
last time I was on, the Bahr Wars were still in full swing and Ben Laussade
was still on his "skull fucking" kick. Well, I guess that wraps up the
intro, now to the meat of the questions:

Is there a pre-gathering of jammers before the St. Louis DT show on
Valentine's Day (it's a good thing my gf likes DT or I'd have been not
screwed, or not screwed, oh whatever)

What would be the best way to get the members of Dt to sign my bass? I got
Megadeth to sign it last month while they were in town but that was a t a
record store. Obviously, I'd rather not bring the bass to the show so does
anyone know if DT has been waiting around after the show to meet and greet?
Any info would be greatly appreciated. Also, it's a real shame about Marty
Friedman, I'm just hoping Pitrelli doesn't join Megadeth, I mean he's great
but I don't want him to leave Savatage, or better yet, just have Pitrelli
and John Oliva join Megadeth. Imagine Megadeth with a keyboard player
    (drool)!

    Good to be back,
    Seth

Now let me begin by saying hello. This is my first post to the jam (as far
as I know). Let me also say that I have no talent for playing music. I
don't know a thing about theory and I have never picked up a guitar in my
life. Don't hold this against me. This *may* be hard for some of you to
believe, but that doesn't mean I don't "know" music or can't "appreciate"
it. After all, I'm here, aren't I? Music is very important to me. I
consider it to be a driving force in my life. With a collection of nearly
300 CD's, I listen to a wide range of styles (this isn't by any means my way
to start a pissing contest...just to illustrate my point).

I know music. I know what I like to hear. I appreciate the talent that
goes into playing music, but even moreso I am in awe of the talent that goes
into writing music. What makes exceptional music, in my opinion, is the
emotion that comes from a listening to a song. You might say one guitarist
is better than another guitarist because of his use of this technique and
this theory, but to me in the end one can play the most impressively complex
piece and not have any emotion behind it. It comes off as sterile and dry.
So you might be right in saying somebody is a better player because play in
a more technical way than most can, but that doesn't necessarily make them a
    better writer.

I consider Hammet to be a greater guitarist (at least in his earlier years)
than most. One of the greatest moments of my collection is the solo in the
song MoP. Beyond a doubt in my top 5. I can't say that he's a better
player than the next guy, but the emotion that comes from some of his
playing reaches me, and that makes him a great writer, in my opinion.

Beyond opinions, you can't really say that this person is better than that
person, or this band is better than that band. Some music clicks with me,
some music doesn't, but I couldn't possibly say that the bands that I like
are "better" than the ones I don't. What would one be gauging this argument
on? Theory? That just doesn't hold water.

shows? How bad is the General Admission for DT shows? I've been to seem them
a few times now but it was always seated.. I'm thinking a few hours ahead of
time is good for a nice place on the floor..

Well, if yer under 21, you have to get to Toad's REALLY early, because
there's sometimes a net up to keep you away from the drinking area, which
comprises the ENTIRE floor, and then some. I got stuck way back for last
years xmas show, and I was SO bitter, Especially since I don't drink anyway.
But I saw Leftover Salmon there a few months later, and got there early
enough to get up close to the stage, and it was OK. I hope it is that way
for DT's gig there. And I saw Jazz is Dead there a coupla months back and
the net was on the OTHER side of the stage, and that was really cool. Toad's
is one of the best places I've EVER been to see a show, but not if that
    #@&@^n' net is up....oh well...hope that helped

    Hey Jammers,

I am very excited today, because Dream Theater is actually going to play
my humble home city of New Orleans, LA. I'm going to get the word out to
the other 5 or so Dream Theater fans at Tulane, one of which I converted
personally. Are there any other Louisiana Jammers out there in the New
Orleans area who would like to get together for this show on March 8th.
Hopefully everybody won't be too hungover after Mardi Gras, because this
is the day after. If anybody plans on being here for Mardi Gras, send me
a private email, and we might be able to get together a group of people.
I also figure Dream Theater will actually be spending Mardi Gras in New
Orleans, and hopefully I will actually see them in a crowd somewhere.

Actually all of this comes after I have purchased bus tickets to go to
Newark and see the show in Seabright, NJ, but I will still be attending
the show in New Orleans since it is right in the middle of my "spring"
    break.

I'm elated to find this out, so I may be rambling alot, but if you are
interested contact me. The House of Blues is a pretty good venue here, as
I saw Steve Vai there last year.

Hey Kurt, I know you are in the area, so send me an email and we'll
    organize something.

    Later,
    Kevin

now, I think that I might really like its music, so, now I'm asking you guys,

Hello everyone, I'm new to the list, and this probably isn't the
best way to introduce myself, but Mr. Jones's comments really bothered me,
and I have to get this off my chest in general. 'dav w' very eloquently
made the major points I wanted to make, but I just wanted to concur and
    kind of vent. :)

    >You obviously only play a little guitar.

This is just sad. Do you really get off on putting other people down?
What does this accomplish, really? If there's one thing the world doesn't
need is someone going around crushing others' love of music by spouting
useless pedantry. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it.

The message then goes on to try and teach us unwashed masses about music
theory. Now, while Mr. Jones's statements about "guidelines" may have
_some_ truth, this is a poor method of teaching. When I go to ask my
professors for help on a subject, they don't say to me, "You're a stupid
little man. Now here's how to be smart like me..."

Even if these "guidelines" are correct, so what? You can follow some or
none at all and still make great music. Case in point:

After hearing Therion's "Theli", "Vovin" and "A'Arab Zaraq...", I thought
Christofer Johnsson must be this awesome classical composer with tons of
knowledge of music theory. He was even given an honorary award by the
Swedish Classical Music Composers' Society (or something similar), for his
classical compositions for a film soundtrack. Then I read this interview
    he gave:

    *snip*
Q: What is your musical education?

C.J.: None, I am 100% self taught. I had to learn notes when recording
    Theli though.
    *snip*

And this is in a genre (classical) that probably values knowledge of
theory more than any other! See, this the only problem I have with
prog in general- there's always a few people who think they have some vast
knowledge of music and pounce on anyone who doesn't agree with them. Even
in death metal- I read this zine by some fool named "Bill Z. Bub" (get it?
yuck yuck) who interviewed the mighty Dan Swano and said something like
"The only people who would like Crimson (one of Dan's albums) are those
who don't know anything about music, am I correct?" Now, I'm sure this guy
has no balls and didn't say this to Dan's face and just stuck it in there
afterwards like the Daily Show does. Nevertheless, this is just a moronic
thing to say- you don't have to know anything about music to be able to
appreciate it. If you think someone has less knowledge about theory than
you, and you have this overwhelming urge to bitch at him/her, just take

Anyway, I went to the DT concert in San Francisco on Sunday and it was
awesome. Best show I've ever been to. I say that every time I get back
from a show, but I really mean it this time! :) LaBrie was totally on, his
voice never cracked once, unlike in OiaL, and the "Intimate evening
with Dream Theater" show I saw in Philly in '98. <shudder> The crowd was
totally into it, singing along during the quiet parts and headbanging and
stomping enough to shake the floor during "Home"! The Dregs were
excellent as well- definitely will have to pick up their latest album. All
y'all going to see the show in the Midwest and East are in for a major
kick in the butt! Have fun!

    Later,
    Evan

Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen and Jeff Beck all revolutionized
guitar playing with very little theory knowledge. Actually most bluesy
players could get away with no theory beyond the very basics.
Of course you have to have a something to replace the theory-
an excellent ear, heaps of imagination, great feel, fast fingers,
stage presence, a musical goal or path etc. (Hendrix had all of
these in great abundance which is why he sits at the top of most
top guitarist lists, as opposed to other guitar nerds who may have
worked their way through a jazz theory book).
Still most of us, like me and Kirk Hammet, so a little theory and
good technique can go a long way.

Hi everyone. Im mailing from Aussieland! Just wondering if anyone knows how to get a message through to the managers or even members of DT. I have a whole army of people in Australia who absolutely worship them. Including me of course. Me and my brother are constantly trying to figure out a way to get them over here. Any gig in Australia is a huge party anyways, so they'd probably love it if the got their asses over here!!! I would pay any money to see them live and its an ongoing dream of mine.. What are they like live? Any info you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Try lifting some shadows off our dreams... :-)

hello to all! i just wanted to introduce myself to the list. ive been readin the list for about a week now but too lazy to post. y'all are hilarious and interesting! keep up the craziness! i have a few questions: first, can someone clue me in to some other progressive bands besides DT (definition of "prog" notwithstanding)? i already listen to fates and planet x but cant get my hands on other stuff. second: is it me or is SFaM a superior album? ive had it since christmas and cannot stop listening to it. if it is, why? thirdly: should i go to the upcoming cinci concert? i have a few days to decide my fate....i would like to say this about the 100 greatest guitarist thread: i, like most of you was irritated to find that JP was not on the list (i was looking specifically for him as all good DT fans would). i quickly forgot about this until i saw it here. i thought about it and...who gives a shit whos on the fuckin list? who exactly composed the list? us? nope. was it produced by a magazine? yeah. literature of this nature only exists to convince or sway the readers opinion in one direction or another. thus, by even acknowledging this list, we have had our minds and hearts influenced by some fucking magazine we dont even write for! i know its fun to sit and read mags for free at barnes and nobles for hours but stop! magazines are the most useless form of entertainment in the world. as the dude says, "its a fuckin travesty, man." thanks for listening and forgive my lengthy introductory bullshit. jonathan "the missing key to unlock my minds door"

    >IMO, keyboards were an untalented players' attempt to cover up bad >technique and undeveloped interpretational skills.

Well, Sarah, let's all throw away our keyboards and worship ONLY Jorden Rudess. What you said is like saying "People only use distorted guitars to cover up how clumsy they actually are." That would be an ignorant statement, as yours was. There are talented guitarists who use distortion simply for effect, or because they want to have more sustain. You're essentially trying to say that >everyone< who uses a keyboard is covering up bad technique, right? Are you familiar with the keyboardist/pianist of Genesis, Tony Banks? He plays a 'mean' grand, and is an excellent keyboardist with GOOD technique. I'm sure he could humble you in two seconds flat on a grand or on a keyboard. But according to you he acutally has bad technique, but only when he plays the keyboard? That's ludicrous! You must be narrow-minded to think that a person is bad because he/she uses a keyboard, instead of a grand piano. I could find millions of counter-examples to prove that statement wrong.

    Hey gang :

could someone send me the details on the MArs Music appearance in Minneapolis on the 11th ? As far as time, address, etc ? I would appreciate it....Me and my bud Randy will be at the Rock Bottom Cafe also for the pre-show...I'll be in my Ytsejam T-shirt (the definition one).... As an aside, I found out today a friend of mine met Dream Theater back in 94ish on July 3rd when they played Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.... She said they were camping in the campground right by her, with all the "common folk"...she said they were crazy and acted all weird, etc...and that no-one believed they were in a band.....Why the hell did'nt I camp with that group ? DAMN !!.. I told her I am so jelous she met them that I would find it hard to speak to her again...anyway, just a cool story I thought I'd share....that was a GREAT show, and the only time I saw Kev Moore with them....

Hope to meet a few of you in Mpls on Friday ! Tom

Great, thanks, Paul. I had almost completely forgotten about that one.
