OK, enough silliness and back-breasted comments. This is serious. Dream Theater is performing in the City of New York at the end of this month. We seriously need to start up a posse beforehand. (The show's on a Saturday, too, so no excuse for pansying out.) The only downside is that Roseland is in Midtown, where everything has the tourist surcharge added on. Here's what we need:
1) A list of who's hanging out beforehand 2) A list of cool places we can go that are at most one subway away (cause otherwise it just gets ridiculous trying to rustle a whole herd of Jammers from train to train)
Who's got ideas? Since I don't live or work in Midtown, I'm not too up on what's in the area (52nd between 8th and Bway, for those in the know). Let's figure this out. -d

I'm hoping to make it again. It was a long flight from Atlanta but the best overall concert experience I had during 1999. Next year I'll try to get to your show a little earlier. It was Erik Grandin from Mayadome who dragged us all toward your show, saying "Check these guys out, they're great!"
(Progpower was the best -overall- show. The award for "single best show of 1999," BTW, goes to Ozric Tentacles at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta. Wow!)

Yep, more than a little, but I'm still amazed no-one was seriously injured at that show. James L. even noticed the incredible crushing right in front of the stage. I'd have been upset and calling for blood, no doubt, but there were people on the floor who were literally being crushed.
Besides, I'd seen the show at the Malibu on Long Island the night before. :)

www.ytseradio.com was already mentioned, and is a good choice. Also of note is www.seismicradio.com. Both are primarily run by progressive-minded folks and both feature some deejays who are longtime denizens of this list, and some others.
I play anything from Dead Can Dance to Dimmu Borgir, Enya to Enchant, Ozric Tentacles to Ocean Machine. I'm a deejay on both Realservers.
Both servers also feature an associated IRC channel to allow real-time requests of songs and feedback. THAT's something commercial radio CAN'T deliver. :) Most deejays also take realtime requests via ICQ.

Not putting Jordan down at all he is one hell of a keyboardist, but if you want to hear someone just TOTALLY IN-freakin-credible listen to Keith Emerson. Besides ELP, he was also in a band called THE NICE. I'm sure most of you keyboardists out there have listened to him and know I just had to give him credit as well. Also on a drummer note, Neil Peart grew up listening to Carl Palmer and wanted to be and play like him. IMO, The student became the master, not to say Carl is not great himself though. Rock on! They now have a java based versiopn so there's no need to download and install a program.. You could also download Radiospy or MP3Spy... Streaming mp3's are alot better quality than spinner and realaudio, and there's alot of 24hour prog stations on it.

*You really are missing out on an incredible band and listening experience if you dismiss them just because they use growls*
oh BTW ..on this record the vocals are balanced almost 50/50 with clean melodic vocals which Mr. )BÅkerfeldt also adorns this record with. Once you get past the hating growl vocals point..theres no turning back with this band and trust me, you wont regret it.

Sure. Nobody *needs* to know music theory in order to write or play music. In much the same way, nobody needs to know the rules of spelling and grammar to be able to write. But it you want to make a profession of either then you MUST learn the rules, or its just lazyness. Simple as that. Theory is too often slagged off as this evil thing that inhibits creativity, but that's complete crap - how often do you hear someone who knows theory saying how it ruined their compositional skill? The problem comes only with people like Steve Vai, who are virtually incapable of putting together something that doesn't RELY on being flashy and clever. Theory just means that you can understand WHY something you like sounds the way it does, which in turn allows you to get what you want to play out of your head and onto tape with minimal changes at the fingerboard stage.

Through this list, we tend to do all our pre-show planning, dinner plans, etc. Just ask about our plans for dinner before Toad's place last year. That worked very well. With the exception of Chris's too hot plate, lousy service, and a waitress with a piss-poor attitude.
Anyhow, never fear! For there will be many of us there! Look for a large clump of people, look for Skadz, and keep your eye out for ytsejam shirts or other shirts with bands you hear about only on this list... that'll be Us.
