The Roseland Ballroom is exactly that -- a ballroom. Many moons ago, it was THE place to be on a Saturday night for ballroom dancing in NYC. It's basically a huge room with great sound, but since it's general admission, it can be tough to see the stage even if you're not a shorty. :) In typical NYC fashion, drinks are VERY expensive and they are VERY strict about proofing, but I've never been to a show there that was 21 and over. Besides, if it were, it would say so on the tickets.

    Hope that helps. :)

    Hi Jammers,

I write this, because I think, that there are some Gitarists on the Jam
who are familiar with this kind of stuff and equipment I use.
    The stuff I use:
    - TriAxis
    - Lexicon MPx-100
    - DBX 166 XL
    - ENGL 2X50 Power amp
    - JPM-100 P2
    - Boogie 4X12 Cab

I think something must be wrong with the sustain.
For example, at a Gain Setting of 10 and a Ld2red Setting of 10, a picked
tone gets really weak after two seconds. I bought the DBX unit because I
thought it can be used to increase the length of the tone. But I can't
    hear any effect.
This surprises me, because I used a SansAmp Preamp and a Boss GX700 at the
beginning of my "carreer". And if I dialed in the gx700's Compressor, the
tone was lengthened a lot. I always thought a compressor is used to
increase the level of a weak or a getting weaker tone. The GX700 worked
    exactly this way.
is the DBX not working properly?
BTW, the DBX and the Lexicon are running in the TriAxis loop. But I hear
no differences when I just put them in series after the Pre-Amp.
Of course I know that JP uses that kind of Equipment. And his Sustain is
much longer, like as the Sustain of many other Stuff I heard life is
longer. If the DBX is not broken, How could the sustain be reached?

It would be great if someone who is familiar with that technical stuff
    could contact me via E-Mail.
I hope this is not non-related too much, but I don't have many sources of
Info like Manuals and Mags because I'm blind.
    Sorry for my bad english,
    Thanx,
    C.

    Hey Matt,
The Dregs (including the amazing Steve Morse) played last night for a solid
hour. It was fantastic! I love that band. I was surprised to see Andy
West, the original bass player filling in on rhythm guitar and somtimes
doubling up with Dave LaRue on a 2nd bass guitar. (First time I've ever seen
any band play with *2* bass players!)

The Salt Lake City DT show was totally amazing! I just hopped on this list a
few days ago so I don't want to bore you and repeat what others have said
about the setlist and show details... but, suffice it to say that SFaM was
practically note PERFECT! Meeting all the guys and getting autographs after
the concert was a highlight!!! ...Oh, and scoring a twinkie from KorgX3
(meant for Mike P.) wasn't bad either... LOL

    << Hey Jammerz:

Forgive me if this has been mentioned, but I don't recall reading it. How
long is the Dregs' opening set on this DT tour? I'm just looking for an
estimate... half hour? 45 minutes? Or do they play a full set? And one
more thing, is Steve Morse still in the band? I hope so... I saw him play
for the first time at the Deep Purple gig I went to a couple years back. I
    was quite impressed.

    Thanx... Matt T. >>

Alrighty - first things first. Try removing the DBX and Lexicon from your
signal chain. Get a dry signal first (guitar, preamp, power amp, cabinet -
NO EFFECTS), and make sure you have the sustain you're looking for. If you
still aren't, there is a possibility you need new tubes in your Triaxis
and/or ENGL, a new battery if you have active pickups in your JPM, or new
batteries in any wireless systems you are using. This procedure will
eliminate the main components of the signal chain from suspicion. Now, one
by one, add your effects units back into the chain. I'd say you should
start with the Lexicon. Hook it up, make sure you're still getting your
tone, and if you aren't, it's that unit. FYI: incorrectly configured noise
gates and compressors are notorious for sustain loss. Do the same thing for
    the DBX, etc., etc., etc.

If you need any further help, let me know... :)

I dont know if the camo is different...but i have a JPM100P3 ( the black
and white one) and the neck is thin ...tapered. Its very very comfortable.
My hands are pretty big, but theyre not specially *long*, just big :P .
Anyways i dont know maybe the P4 (camo) has a different neck..

OK, I have a real big question here. Apparently, there are a few guitar
players on this list who are just incredible and we other ytsejammers should
be greatful we are in there mere prescence. My question is this: If you guys
are so great, then how come you keep wasting your time by posting on this
damn newsgroup??? Shouldn't you guys be off dazzling the world with your
incredible guitar playing skills??? Jesus Christ already (and excuse the
language if you hapen to be offended). And this doesn't neccessarily apply to
the guy who wrote the quote above, I'm just using this as an opportunity.
Especiallly to the one guy who said taht he could learn to play better than
Kirk Hammet in a week (or wors to that effect). Well then, stop wasting your
time here, go do it, join a band, and tour the damn world already.

    My $.02:

Theory can provide a deeper understanding about how the music works. I don't
think anyone will argue that knowledge of music theory is a pre-requisite
for writing quality music. It might make smethings easier, like applying
certain mode known to achieve a desired mood, instead of having to search
for the right notes. (Of course those musically gifted individuals who have
an awesome ear for music don't even think about the theory behind what they
are coming up with--they just hear it in their head and lay it down! The
bastards!) All the theory in the world, however, cannot make a person
creative. I studied music since I was nine and classical guitar in college
    w/ a music minor (which I didn't complete), I don't feel that I have a
creative bone in my body and never wrote anything that I (or anyone else for
that matter) considered to be good! Thankfully, I have forgotten much of
music theory, and can now crank out pentatonic hooks worthy of Top40 radio
    ;-)

For the person who asked if Steve Morse is still in the Dregs: Steve Morse
IS the Dregs! (He writes all of the music.) So, the answer is, yes. I am
also very interested to find out how long their set lasts. I didn't think
they were touring to promote a new album, am I wrong?

My holy grail of guitar performance would be to see Steve and John take the
stage together, as I was told happened at a show in NY some time ago! Is
there any chance of this? Cruise Control anyone!

Roseland is a good venue. I saw Megadeth and Type O Negative there a few
months ago. The show is not 21+. The stage is nice and large, which is
good, because in my opinion, a 5 piece with huge amp and effects rigs would
look really stupid on a little stage. The sound is pretty good too,
everything is clear and distinguished from the other instruments. DT will
probably be even better there, because there's no way they're as loud as
Megadeth, and they sounded good there.

location (2nd row), but I had a hard time picking out JM's bass work, and =
    JR's keys.
While I enjoyed the concert, I wish they would have varied the music a bit =
more from the CD. It was fun to see them, but I could have stayed home =
and just listened to the CD.
They had some modest video that, from time to time, showed lyrics, and a =
    few photos.
    Overall a great show.

Let's get one thing straight, Opeth are not, re NOT anyway
shape or form a black metal band, nor for that matter a death metal
    band.
Maybe that's what puts a lot of people off checking them out ?
They play extreme progressive metal with 'death metal' style
growling vox, as well as some great 'clean' singing.
I no way can you even compare them to anything in the black/death
metal genre, they are totally unique.
Don't let the growling vox put off from some of the most inspiring
and exciting extreme progressive music there is today.
Check out 'Still Life', I am sure if you can get your ears around the
    vox you'll be hooked :)

    Sarah,

I'm sorry to have started your membership with a message so malicious,
but if there's ONE thing in this world that angers me, it's ignorance. I
would've never been prompted to post that had it not angered me as much as
it did. There was also a misunderstanding, as I was under the impression
that this was your CURRENT opinion (afterall, you started with "IMO"). I
also never said "arrogant" in that message :) I aplogize for my harshness to
you. I am a previous member of the Genesis list "Paperlate", though, and
it's absolutely full of ignorance and nit-pickiness. That's why I quit, and
I suppose that it was a <bit> hypocritical to do it to you. Again, I say
"I'm sorry," because what I said was pretty uncalled for. But I still stand
on my opinions, they just shouldn't have been directed toward you. I hope I
haven't permanently projected myself as an asshole. I'd hate to think that
someone would have that sort of an opinion about me because I flew off the
    handle ONCE :)
By the way, just in the case that you don't absolutely despise me for
those comments, I am also a new member to this list. I like to smile a lot
    :P I'm 14 years old, I live in Erie, PA and I'm in 9th grade. I'm a fan of

the Heartbreakers, Phil Collins, and many others. I'm not strictly a prog
fan, however, as some people narrow themselves to be. Welcome to the Dream
Theater mailing list, I'm sure we all hope that you enjoy your stay :)

Okay so you're going to get one new opinion on them soon, I'm a member of
Finnish Music Club and in their latest magazine there was a small review of
them, saying with their latest album they have moved more into the proggier
sound, still maintaining that wonderful melodicality (can you actually say that
    ??)

    > *You really are missing out on an incredible band and listening experience

I guess that growling vocals are mainly the reason for me to stay clear of some
bands, but I'm going to try hard with this one, since so many people now have
recommended them. I'll let you know how I managed.

Yeah, well, now that I think of it, there was a male voice (so I don't think
Jessie comes to mind, right ? ;-) after a pretty long unpaused music flow (I'm
soooo sorry about my sentences, hope you get what I mean, I really don't always
know how to say things in english...) telling that there were some tracks from
Styx, "Suite..." something, then there was "Crystal Ball" and at least one
other, which I can't remember anymore...

Does that give you enough ? I really liked that "Suite..." thing (or is it
"Sweet.." ?), I'd like to hear more like that, if it's a representative song
from their catalog ? And yeah, Crystal Ball was a good one too...

    Thanks Mike for info !!

listened to Ytseradio, but I'll guarantee you, won't be the last...Actually,
it's on right now ;-) Keep up the great works, guys and gals !!!

Someone posted this on the Aquarium Rescue Unit list, and I think it fits
well into the recent technical vs. theoretical vs. emotional playing/kirk
hammet thread. It's about Elvin Jones, BTW

"For the sake of clarity I am going to describe Elvin's style in terms of a
three part metaphor because I think it nicely summarizes the artistic
process. The HAND refers to how an artist technically plays; the HEAD to the
actual musical concepts which provide a basis for ones style; the HEART is
the emotional and psychological milieu which frames an artists vision.
(Another way to conceptualize this threesome is body, mind and spirit.) "

I just wanted to share that, I'm done now.
