I just played a jpm ibanez with the matte camo finish, and it sounded great! But the fucking neck is like a classical and the damn frets are soo big! Are John Petrucci's hands huge? I loved the sound soo much, i considered purchasing it because of Petruccis playing style, and they way he has influenced me, but damn... that neck has a fat width......
Actually, the neck on the JPM has a thinner width (42MM) than most Ibanez necks, such as the Wizard or Jem necks (which have a 43MM width). Also big frets make it easier to get a better control of the string and, together with low action, make it easier to play legato type passages.

I don't know if this has been discussed or not, so I thought I'd mention it. If you dig Jordan Rudess and neoclassical instrumental music, you might want to check out Vinnie Moore's Time Odyssey. Time Odyssey was recorded about 10 years ago, but Jordan does some great stuff on this CD. The CD also includes (the highlight for me) some cool trade-off solo's between Jordan and Vinnie.
For those that enjoy keyboard-dominated music, I'd recommend Jordan's solo CD "Listen." I remember picking it up a few years ago, long before he joined DT. I couldn't take it out of my player for a while. Jordan shows not only how strong his chops are, but also.. and more importantly, that he a great writer.

In defense of non-musicians (hopefully an eye opener of sorts for musicians):
I am a new subscriber and a minority on two levels in the DT fan population: 1) I am female, 2) I am not a musician. I have, however, considered myself a DT fan for a couple of years now. For me it started with my ex-boyfriend, who was into progrock and metal and is a musician (mainly guitar, but bass and drums as well). In the past couple of years through increased exposure to bands like DT, Fates Warning, Spocks Beard, Queensryche, Drain STH, Opeth, and the likes, my understanding of music has grown immensely! Granted, I admit to not hearing as much when I listen as musicians do; but when I first heard DT, I didn't like them at all. To me it was just noise, and as I started listening more and more I started being able to separate the different instrumental parts and I began to like them. As I started hearing more in the music, I became a fan. Now it's to the point where I truely understand what the difference between metal and progrock is and can appreciate odd time signatures and such when I listen. I can no longer stand to listen to popular music and jump at the chance to go to a DT concert or buy a new prog cd. This music has done a lot for my music appreciation and I've grown from it.
So, here's my question: Are my musical tastes any less valid than anyone elses? Granted, I may not look for the same things, but the appreciation is there all the same... Am I any less of a DT fan for that? I ask because this list, be it great for musicians, seems to slaughter anyone with a slightly uninformed opinion. Progrock, while it speaks mostly to musicians, has a select audience of people like me and in theory, we should be welcome members of the crowd. Because we are not musicians, shouldn't mean we are lesser people... our interests perhaps lay elsewhere (such as for me with art, graphic design, and web design). I'm not implying that it does to any of you, but I ask that all opinions be welcome... welcome to critique as well, but not rage. This message is not meant to have you all draw your swords, but rather to present the feelings of a non-musician in this crowd of musicians and perhaps make you think a little.
Aside from that: I'm a Philly fan! Any ytsejam meetings happening at the concert here?

Jeepers! Sorry for any confusion... I was basically using the example of Cal collins being completly self taught as being an example of a musician not knowing what he is doing theoretically, yet still sounding good. I am certainly not saying by any means that THEARY IS BAD! I rather like music theory and find that anaylizing what I play (and what others do also) liberating in a way. Some musicians manage to bypass the theoretical points and manage to make wonderful music is all! latuh

To top things off. The Twinkies didn't go over well gang. Every band member rejected them much to my disappointment. :( Although several of the people hanging around the "rope" found them to be quite enjoyable... Could it be that Hostess products are sanctified in the name of Dream Theater? Perhaps there is a shrine to Twinkie the Kid in the bus we don't know about? To eat a Twinkie is to sin in the eyes of the almighty Hostess? I dunno. Mike just told me to bring him a bottle of Tequila next time. hehehehe. So you all know that now. :) He's burnt on Jaggrmeister.
Anyway. To start things off. Those of you think you're going to score something by coming early. Save yourselves. A half hour before showtime some gooftroop appeared on stage named The Star People. Evidentally the unannounced opening act. To quote one of the band guys (whose name will be withheld for his protection) "man, my thoughts exactly. They're like fucking vaudeville." While they appeared to have talent, they were pretty much a novelty act. Everyone was making fun of them after the show. hehehehe.
Next... The Dixie Dregs. I haven't listened to the Dregs much, but their performance last night blew me away. Steve Morse is fucking king. They played for a full hour and although I don't know any of their songs, the one he did announce was "The Mash" and he did that nifty fiddle on the guitar thing and I was shitting my bricks. I've never heard anyone use a volume knob and solo so damn fast. EVH doesn't hold a candle to Morse. F'n A!
Another highlight of the Dregs was that they did an EXCELLENT cover of Zappa's Peaches En Regalia. VERY well played for only a 6-man band. And yes, they are selling their new CD at the show for $17. It's called something California.
Now for Dream Theater. What can I say? Everything about them was perfect for the most part. There were a few complications here and there. It seems like the crew in general was lacking a bit. The lighting people could never get the spotlight on the right people. I think the lights were done by the actual Kingsbury Hall staff, though. DT's own lighting setup was perfectly organized though, except for, again, the stupid spotlight guy. During Regression, James' was barely audible, and at the beginning of Through Her Eyes his mic was even on at all. John Myung was barely audible through the whole thing *sigh* as usual and every once in awhile Jordan got lost in the mix, too. And then there was the tripped out Staff guy in the center aisle who was disturbing everyone's show. He kept trying to interact with all of us on the aisle and I'm surprised no one kicked his ass. When he bent down and said this real effeminate "hi" in my ear I had to restrain myself from saying something rude. hehehehe.
John P was changing guitars more than I change my underwear. He started with his new blue EB guitar (sweet lookin) and traded off occasionally to his Model 2 JPM and his GI Joe Model 4. He also had a nice looking blue sunburst 7 string that he was playing quite a bit, too. It looked like he broke a string sometime in the middle of The Dance of Eternity though and had to play his parts (excellently) without it up to Jordan's solo. Jordan's solo made me go wee wee. Nuff said. That techno rythmn with him playing over his sequenced shit was intense. I think he could give Keith Emerson some lessons for sure. :)
The setlist was pretty simple. Although I was satisfied with what they played, I have to echo Bryan's thought about the setlist. While playing SFAM front to back was great and absolutely tighter than a 16 year old virgin, it was something we had basically heard before. :\ Oh, well, maybe next tour. :)
The setlist: SFAM in its entirety with Jordan's key solo in the midst of TDoE. To cap it off they played a medley (like a 20+ minute medley) of Peruvian Skies, an Austin Powers motife, Paradigm Shift, Pull Me Under, Under a Glass Moon, A Fortune in Lies, Only a Matter of Time, and Take the Time.
Through the whole show James was DEAD on. He only cracked like three times and had to drop to keep from cracking once. And he hit ALL the high notes. That's damn good for a two hour show in which so much of it is written for such a high timbre, imo. I know I couldn't do it. And he was totally into the crowd. Very interactive, pointing at people, getting the audience clapping, etc...
After the show the band came out one by one and eventually they all gave autographs, took pictures, etc. I met Gerald (fellow jammer), Max from Spokane, and a few other people. Lots of fun hanging out in the back. :) I was surprised at how many people actually were back there. It was kind of disappointing, something like 52 of us. Didn't leave any time to converse with the band between autographs and running to the bus. :\ And remember everyone, bring Tequila, not Twinkies! :)
Probably my favorite part of the show was how I started a big clap-along in the crowd during the Star People's set and people were like "knock it off! Don't encourage them!" :) Great fun. Hello everybody!
This is Jon Dery. I was (off &) on the jam a long time ago. I remember getting jams in the 800's back in the Awake days. The new album kind of inspired me to resubscribe so I could waste time screwing around at work. I promised myself that I would only post when absolutely necessary, because I actually enjoy not getting twelve digests of "best of" and "Derek" threads every day.
Anyway, I'm here to promote my former-roomate's band, Grehaven. We both go to Berklee- the school of bad guitarists and outstanding horn players. Their self-titled debut is coming out in mid-March on Angular Records (home of Eternity X and Relayer). I got to hear it last year and it sounded great- really atmospheric songs and great production. It has since been remixed for even better sound quaility. I know lots of you guys will totally dig this. Check it out. There are soundclips on their website: www.havenweb.com.
I an going to the DT show at the Roxy in Boston on the 27th and will enjoy seeing some old friends who I have not seen or talked to since my "absence". (I had to say that because it makes me seem like an enigma, even though I am not.)

I don't how many Ozzy fans there are out there, but there is an Ozzy tribute coming out that has a cover of "Mr. Crowley" done with Yngwie on guitar and Derek Sherinian on keyboards! Of course, the singer is going to be Ripper Owens (the guy who's the lead singer of Judas Priest these days), but hey, 2 outta 3 aint bad! It might be worth a listen when it comes out. To the person who was asking about Styx, I recommend you get their Greatest Hits album. You'll hear a lot of songs you'll be able to recognize (although now that I think about it this depends on your age) and there's plenty of other kickass tunes, including the two you mentioned in your post (Suite Madame Blue and Crystal Ball). Also get the Greatest Hits Part 2, which kicks ass as well. The only other Styx album I have is Caught in the Act - Live which includes songs that are on both of the greatest hits albums, except for one studio song recorded just for that album. It also kicks ass. That's all I can say since I don't have any of their other albums, but you can't go wrong with these. Dennis DeYoung has one hell of a great voice, and plays keys beautifully as well.

I have to agree, the greatest hits album is the best album to buy if you're a new Styx fan. There's a plethera (sp.?) of great songs to enjoy. And you don't have to be old to like them. If you're into Styx, or anything else from that era of music, get Boston's greatest hits. I know the two aren't similar (expcept for the time they were popular), but it's a good disc to buy.
