Quick question: I've got an Ibanez six string bass (don't remember the #'s,
just that it's the crappiest sixes that was on the market before sam ash
started making those Carlo Robelli's), and every time I play a string it
causes every other string to ring uncontrollably. I mute 'em with my thumb,
but it's still really annoying. I was wondering if anyone has had a similar
problem, and how they fixed it. I'm thinking of buying a replacement
graphite neck from Moses or Modulus, but I'm not sure if that'll solve the
problem, and I'd hate to spend $700 and then have it not work. Or could it
be the bridge? it's just a crappy one that Ibanez puts on 'em. Anyway if
anyone has any suggestions, please pm me. THanks in advance

Recently the band Slipknot came to my city with the opening band Kitty. About
a week later they went to another concert in a different city. At the
beginning of this show Kitty said "You all gonna tear this place apart???"
And they started rocking. The venue said it held 880 people, but claimed it
sold 900 tickets. Band management counted over 1200 people through the door,
which means that the venue was trying to cheat the band out of money. The
fire marshall showed up and closed down the concert saying that until 20
people left, (making 900 supposed fans 880 supposed fans), the concert
wouldn't continue. Twenty people were offered a full refund, took it, and
left. Then Slipknot took the stage and said "Twenty of out fans were forced
to leave, we're not playing, and nobody's getting a refund. We'll come back
in a few weeks and hold a free concert." This was the second time that this
had happened to Slipknot in this city and last time they did just that. When
Slipknot left the stage the fans went insane and tore the place down to the
ground. All law enforcement agents in the county were instantly called to the
scene and threatened to arrest over 700 people. Just before calling in the
national guard the mob dispersed, but left little more than the rafters in
their wake. In my opinion the venue got exactly what they deserved. Their
greed cheated the band, and the fans, and now those same fans exercised their
power and put the place out of business. I don't encourage mob behavior, but
I'm also glad that the venue was torn down. That kind of crap is hardly
neccessary. Venue's do purposefully outsell events. They assume that some
people will buy tickets and not show up, or sometimes they just don't care.
Give away tickets are often culled from the mass of original tickets, but not
always, which leads to some overselling.

OK, finally got the CD, and the mag looks great... well, what pages I could

packages marked "Fragile" should be left out in the rain over night... Maybe
they hate early "Yes" or something... ;-) I'll try to secure a replacement
mag, luckily the CD and most of the liners were not ruined...

Something on the CD, aside from the MPEG video that's on there for computer
users, how do you access the other files... it looks like lyric files and a few
photos, but not in any format I know of... any clues? The main file is a .CDQ

I just wanted everybody going to the NYC show on the 26th know that I'm organizing a get-together before the show with a bunch of fans from mikeportnoy.com. Of course, everyone from the 'jam is invited. I've located a "T.G.I.Friday's" at 761 7th Ave. (around 7th and 51st). It's only about a two block walk from there to Roseland, so it'll spare us the need for taxi's or public transportation (the horror! ;). To me, a 4:00 PM meeting time seems good, as it gives us around 3-4 hours of "chill" time, while still allowing plenty of time to get good spots on line. So, if you can, just drop me an email and let me know if you're interested, and how many people you're bringing. If you've got any suggestions, please feel free to email me at "scarred2112@aol.com". Hope to see you there!

Um, just hang out by the tour bus and when they come out say "Excuse me, would you sign my bass?" and I bet they would, cuz I've seen them do it several times before.

Lets not forget the Scandinavian musicians that happen to have PARTICULARLY cool names. Yngwie Malmsteen, Timo Tolkki, Jens Johansson...and yes the guys in Meshuggah too :-) Speaking of Jens, does anyone know where I can get his cd, Sonic Winter for under $30?

Damn, I can't wait to hear that! I've never heard that tune played by a non-Zappa group (expect the Meridian Arts Ensemble, and they don't count, because they...well, they just don't). My old band used to play it, and we were usually 5-piece, and as a result, it sounded a bit thin. But a band called "Big Swifty" would be expected to play a Zappa tune, wouldn't they?

About theory - theory isn't for everybody. My belief is that you get out of theory what you put into learning about it. As most of you know, there's more to music theory than scales. Hell, if you know some theory, you can appreciate Schoenberg! As long as you don't actually listen to his music, that is :)

Okay, I'm going to stretch a bit, and see if a few Miami-area 'jammers (at least they used to be Miami 'jammers) are still here, and see if they're going to be at Orlando or West Palm Beach. Bobby Tufino? Isaac Sabetai? Elliot Kim? Are you still on here?

Just a suggestion, I don't know; but have you tried the compressor in *front* of the pre-amp? That's normally the best place for them. Also, compression + lots of gain rarely = a nice tone. They're pretty antagonistic against each other in my experience.

I never liked the JPMs that I tried out, to be honest. I'm not a big fan of double-lockers, the finish is Kinda' cool if you're JP but a little...y'know, if you're not JP, then it's a bit derivative. The pickups and their configuration is pretty cool (I use the same ones in my Les Paul), but really, that's about it. The neck is, as you say, horrible - Ibanez say it's closer to a JEM, which may well be true, but it's still too big for my tastes - Wizard 13mm lovers of the world unite! The nicest Ibanez I ever played on was an RG220, which is absolute bottom of the range, 2 humbuckers. But put a couple of DiMarzios in and fiddle with the wiring, and you have a class guitar. ---end Ibanez sales pitch---

'K, I know this wasn't aimed specifically at me, but I have to clear this up. I am NOT a great guitar player. I'm not very mobile with my right hand nor its fingers. I can't even begin to figure out sweep-picking. There's holes in my technique that could swallow the Titanic. All I'm saying is that - and I shamelessly echo JP on this - there is a VAST difference between being a great GUITARIST and being a great MUSICIAN. The latter is, I feel, FAR more important, and that's always been my direction. At the end of the day, I may not be able to do a 32nd note run up and down the neck in the G Demonic mode; but I know a guy who can, and since I can describe to him EXACTLY what I want him to do, it makes life a lot easier!

Not learning theory is effectively like shutting your eyes and fumbling around in the dark. Sure, you'll still make mistakes; but you'll better understand WHY the note you played sounds bad - or in many cases, why the note you accidentally played sounds pretty cool over that chord!

    Anyway, that's it for now,

I noticed all the comments about the amazing Opeth lately and thought I'd add some proggy album recommendations for those of you who can listen past these kind of vocals. Of course, there's probably loads of people on here who know a lot more about death and black metal than me, and I'm bound to get flamed. Oh well, here goes:

Diabolical Masquerade - Nightwork Every Opeth album Emperor - IX Equilibrium, Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk Cynic - Focus (this album should be worshipped by all humanity) Death - Human, Individual Thought Patterns, Symbolic, The Sound of Perseverance Carcass - Heartwork (bit of a harsh one, this...) Katatonia - anything, especially the one with the bloke from Opeth with the boring name. Focus - Moving Waves (I know its not metal, but its often overlooked) Akercocke - ??

Perhaps someone could help me out with some more recommendations, as while I have all DT stuff, some Fates, Queensryche, Angra, LTE, I'd like to know where to go next to to expand my prog collection.

Sorry to divert from DT-type topics

Given that you were talking about emotion over tecnique, I'll assume you were talking about the first solo in MoP. Which, you will note it says in the booklet and is pretty obvious to listen to - was played by Hetfielf not Hammet.

While its difficult to say how true this is, remember that Hendrix was acknowledged as the greatest guitarist on the planet when he was alive. There are amazing tales of how he would blow other guitarists away, long before you became famous. Players from John McLaughlin to Eric Clapton had nothing but praise for him. I hope that one day, you too will appreciate his genius instead of spurting nonsense about the greats.

The point wasnt that he was self taught, but that he knew little theory, but instead relied on his ear.

What's wrong with that? I don't think any band that pretends to be aliens expects anybody to take them seriously. Go ahead and laugh: they want you to. It'd be like trying to keep a straight face at a Zappa concert. Inhumanly possible, unless you're my boss, whose boyfriend dragged her to see a FZ show back when I was in preschool -- hated it. How's that for fair?

Ripper ain't Rob Halford, but he's a damn fine metal singer. "Jugulator" is one of the best Priest albums of the lot if you ask me. Old JP meets balls and chunk. I'm much looking forward to their next studio release. Some info on it (and Rob's new solo album) if anyone's interested:

Yeah, I didn't want to buy the tix first, and THEN find out that it was 21+. Thanks.

Yngwie teamed up with Ronny James Dio, Stu Hamm, Gregg Bissonnette, and Paul Taylor on a REALLY cool cover of Aerosmith's "Dream On." http://www.yngwie.org/discog/sound/Dream-On.mp3

Many people have mentioned an infamous "Birch Hill" show that was outrageously overbooked and where everyone was being "crushed" by the crowd. I'm curious, how packed was it? I was about 50ft from the stage during Metallica's set at Woodstock 99 and I thought I was gonna suffocate. Was the Birch Hill show any worse than that?

<<RE: Texas LOVES Dream Theater (hint, hint)

Okay boys, I know it's too hot most of the time, too cold some of the time, in the middle of a drought ALL of the time (except when under a flash flood warning), AND we suffer hail storms, dust storms, F5 twisters, hurricanes, lightning that can peel the paint off your tour bus, swarms of killer bees, giant mounds of fire ants, invasions of grass hoppers, invasions of crickets, invasions of illegal aliens, roaches that fly, roaches that crawl... Oh heck, we may have all of the worst parts of the Bible down here, but we do love our Dream Theater. We're all not rootin' tootin' boot-scootin' buckaroos -- some of us would like to even see Hank Williams Jr. wedged in between the Monday Night Football crashing helmets. So, PLEASE come to Ft. Worth. PLEASE!!! I saw DT at The Caravan of Dreams (the best freakin' concert venue this rock soldier has ever seen) one week before they recorded OIALT and it was like having them in my own living room. You must return. I promise, NO COW TIPPIN'.>>

Well there seems to have been quite a few requests lately for some DT Texas tour dates. On 1-13-2000, Mike Portnoy posted an updated tour dates list (at the time) on UACM, and he included the following comment:

"There might be a possibility of a few more shows added (without The Dregs) throughout Texas between March 5th and 10th 2000"

So keep the faith, and keep checking UACM (www.dreamtheater.net) for any additional tour date announcements!

    Hope this helps... Matt T.

So what's wrong with Ripper?!? Granted, everyone's entitled to their opinions, but I was very impressed with Ripper's work on both Jugulator and the double live album. That dude has one HELL of a voice. He reminds me of a Halford with balls. I personally, would love to hear Ripper have a shot at Mr. Crowley... :-)

The new live Dregs album is called California Screamin' Live. It blew me away completely, and forced me to consider buying tickets for the DT show here in DC. After all, a Monday is not the ideal night to be out late, but hey, they haven't been around here in a while. But back to the album, it's got three covers: Peaches en Regalia (with guest Dweezil Zappa), Jessica (Allmann Brothers), and of course Dixie. A stunning recording of what was, I'm sure, a stunning evening.

Right, Korg. Now you're gonna have people bringing cases of Tequila to gigs and during the set, flinging them at the band.

Hey, I realized the band is most likely gonna be in New Orleans for Mardi Gras. It would be great to rum into them, or find out where they would be. If only THEY were kings of a parade instead of NSYNC and Britney Spears (Im lookin foward to her actually BOOOYYOOIIIIIIGGGG). Either way its gonna be cool. But guys be responsible Mardi Gras night, think about us when partying. I don't want a hungover DT.

Seems everyone is up in arms over Hammetts style. While Im no musician, I have fiddled with the guitar a little. I also own a shitload of Metallica stuff, including the box set which I just got the other day. I watched the Seattle 89 justice show, the guitar solo was amazing. He can play almost anything. In the middle they all broke into Little Wing. He can play bluesy stuff really well. One of the greatest guitarists in the world, no. Ranking guitarist thats ridiculous. There could be some undiscovered Jo Blow that kicks everyone's dick off and weve never heard of him.
