All i can say is WOW! I have seen them on every tour since '93 images w/ kevin moore, and last
nights show was the best EVER. Let me give y'all a little insight. But- i won't give it all away!

    They played

SFAM all they way with a jordan solo spot in the ragtime part of the cd, johns solo was in through
here eyes, and they were tight.... Jordan only used 1 KEYBOARD for everything!!!!!!!!!!! He wasn't
    switching back-n-fourth...amazing.

The mixing was great, myung was loud, as was petrucci, and the sound was clear with great
definition. Labrie was in rare form... he was jumping around, left the stage only twice,( he stood
onstage and jammed with the band) intimate with the crowd- he has so much energy nowadays.

They did 2 songs after SFAM....Peruvian skys all the way through, Dr. Evils ( portnoys favorite)
theme song, and paradigm shift as a medly, then another medly of Pull my finger, fortune in lies,
matter of time, & take the time. They were perfect.

Go see it and stand by the sounds board- its mixed perfect!!!!!

<at the show by the soundboard, farting loud during the shitty openers>

Doug, you're OK with me because you're a stand-up guy, and musically wise
beyond your years (IMO of course!). Of course you better thicken up that

    Mike,

    To answer your question:
    1) Musicians have as much time to "waste" here as you obviously do. (so does
    MP, BTW)
    2) Talent alone never got anyone a world tour.
    3) A person can be a very talented guitarist and not desire to be in a band
or on a world tour for many reasons.

I have a question for you:
Since this list is about DT and related topics, this discussion about stuff
related to music theory is relevant to DT since they are very knowledgeable
and capable musicians with a firm grasp of music theory. Why do you want the
musicians who have opinions on this topic to leave the list?

I, for one, am interested in their opinions and I suspect that they form a
sizeable portion of DTs fan base. Many awesome musicians can be a little big
headed at times. I think it comes from people constantly telling them how
great they are. So you know, despite my legions of fans and admirers--I have
    remained modest ;-)

    I have a friend.

    (No, really.)

This friend is a guitar freak; he is a huge fan of Steve Vai, John
Petrucci, Yngwie Malmsteen, etc. He's also a very talented rock guitarist
himself. A short while ago, I asked him to name his favourite guitarist,
confidently expecting the answer to be Vai.

I was very surprised when he mentioned someone I'd never heard of (and
unfortunately I can't remember the guy's name). Apparently this amazing
guitarist is a forty-something unemployed person who lives in Edinburgh,
Scotland, who can outplay Vai, Petrucci, et al in his sleep.

I asked why I'd never heard of him, or why he wasn't famous, or why he
wasn't in a band, or something. The answer:

    "He's too shy."

    Hiya,

I've got a six string too, and occasionally it seesm to suffer from the ringing all all string s when I hit the lower strings. What seems to really help me is four things:1, try a lighter guage of string (this might be unacceptibel to you as it was to me because it makes your bass sound like a guitar with larengitis)2, mute the strings with your left hand fingers as you play, 3. play with your fingers not a pick, as the hammerstops stop the lower string from ringing (besides, it just soiunds ballsier this way) and 4.) Play as far away from you bass amp as possible and face away fromspeaker so the vibrattion from the speaker doesn';t rattle your strings. (You don't have to be playign all that loud on a six string for this to happen)

    Hopes this helps, Seth

Hi mates, I'm new to the list so sorry if I started 3 days ago with such a silly question but I didn't even know how the list works, ect, ect...

I have a new question today: I saw DT once in the north of Italy in Pordenone and as support band there were Jordan Rudess and Rod Morgenstein. I remember very clearly that their show really impressed me but unfortunetly I made the big mistake to not buy their cd right that night (maybe I didn't have enough money!). So I've tried for months to get it somewhere in my city but I couldn't.

The question is: Is it a quality album, compareble to the LTE one's? Have they made more than one album? How can I buy it from Italy? (some cd-seller told me that probably is not available in my country)

I have all the cd's of DT and LTE and I found Morgenstein an amazing drummer, so I'm really interested in all the albums of the side projects with DT or LTE members (instrumental or not), but on the other hand I'm not used to buy cd's if I'm not sure they are really good. I'd like to get some suggestions from people that have listened to those albums.

    Thank you friends.

    Hey all!

I was just wondering if anybody has heard of a band or solo project called, "frederic thorendol and special defects?" Its awesome. To give a slight synopsis- everything that they play is a polyrhythm, everything! Its worth buying if you can 1- tolerate the singing (screaming) and 2- if you can find it. I know its on Amazon.com and its just bad as hell. latuh

It's hard to compare those, but it definitely is a quality album with less throwaway-stuff than on the LTE albums.

    Not yet.

You might like the Platypus album "When Pus Comes To Shove" and the second one "Ice-Cycles" that's coming out later this month. It features Morgenstein on drums with John Myung and Derek Sherinian on bass/keys and Ty Tabor from King's X on guitar and vocals.

In Ytsejam #5303, the one and only Trevor Hoit spoke:

    > LOL! Where's Puh-Tah-Check when you need him? > "Shut up and practice!!!"

Doubtless he's out practicing, or recording in a studio somewhere, laughing his ass off at the rest of us. ;)

    > MY question is: > Is a Warr Guitar to a regular guitar the same as > a Chapman Stick is to a bass?

Not really. The Warr Guitar is essentially the tricked-out fancier cousin of the Stick. The essential 2-handed tapping concept is the same between both instruments, but unlike the Stick, the Warr actually has a body. Emmett Chapman designed the Stick as a minimalist instrument, with pretty much only the neck and other accessories as necessary. Mark Warr took it further, and modeled his instruments after more standard guitar shapes.

Generally, Warr guitars are more "beautiful" and exotic than Sticks. Also, the pickups and electronics are more versatile and adjustable. Warr guitars are probably more suited for using plucking and strumming techniques than Sticks, while both work great as touchstyle instruments. Warr Guitars are at least twice the price of a similar Stick.

For most models, tuning can be the same across both instruments. Both are easy to customize for pretty much any tuning. The standard tuning for touch guitars usually splits the fretboard into 2 sections, one for bass strings and the other for melody strings. Accomplished touch guitarists can play both sides simultaneously; I however cannot. Musicians who choose one or the other usually do so based on tonal qualities and playing needs.

If you've never seen Trey Gunn (or any talented touch guitarist) before, you're in for a treat. Watch his hands and the way they just seem to tap the strings in a fluid motion.

So, to answer your question with an analogy... the Stick is the trusty Datsun 240, and the Warr is a decked-out Lexus. Both serve their purpose well. ;)

    (see www.warrguitars.com and www.stick.com )

    > Trevor is going to see the Trey Gunn Band Friday night.

Check Trey Gunn's homepage at www.treygunn.com - lately, the band has been discouraged and had some "internal" problems. I was lucky enough to see them in Santa Barbara on the 5th (Saturday) but I don't know if they'll continue the tour. Here's hoping they do, because I plan to see them live in Portland this coming Saturday night. Anyone else going to either show? :)

    PS - hi op777!

Don't forget Amorphis. They don't have the death vocals that much, just enough to provide contrast in some of the songs. These guys are Finnish and there are a lot of neat ethnic influences in the songs, talking purely musical here, not lyrical. As for Katatonia, I have two of their albums. Brave Murder Day is a bit of a bore, though I do love the song "Endtimes", which I bought the album for. Discouraged Ones is a better cd, IMO. Then we get off on a whole new tangent into doom metal... mmmm, doom metal..

Hi. I'm happily reading everyone's accounts of the current tour, thanks for sharing the stories. And I'm eagerly waiting for the fan club cd and the show in NYC :) So last night I had a dream. I rarely remember my dreams. The basis for this is the following: a co-worker's dog was missing for a few days and this woman's dog is like her baby. All I kept hearing were the ads that would run in local papers, and what could have happened, etc. Luckily they found the dog in a shelter a few towns away. So in my dream she was going away somewhere, and needed someone to watch the dog. I told her Mike Portnoy would. So the next thing I know Mike and I are in a car driving with the dog. I wanted to go to the beach, but he said it would be too cold and he needed to go to the bank. I forget some of the details. -Rachel

Heh thats odd ...well everyone has diff. opinions... for me, Brave Murder Day is more enjoyable than discouraged ones because of Opeth's vocalist. The music is sort of the same plodding rythim and basic structure...but id rather listen to Mikael growl than that other guys whiney voice.. I dont know ...Katatonia doesnt do much for me ...all the songs on Discouraged sound like theyre on the same key and have the same rythim pattern. Now if im in a doomy mood id rather go for some newer tiamat , soul grind, or some goth influenced (im using the term goth here because thats what everyone labels it, i abhor that using that term) doom like theatre of tragedy, older my dying bride (and their most recent) , tristania, within temptation, sins of thy beloved and on thorns i lay.... (this msg is not directed towards you, amanda directly, mind you )

OK, my bad here. I didn't mean any disprespect towards Ripper Owens. In fact, I've never actually really heard him sing. I just thought it was a little odd that he would go along with Yngwie and Derek is all and was kind of a no-name compared to them. Doubt you'd find those three ever hangin on a corner together! At any rate, I look forward to hearing this tune. -Mike C.

Just got mine the other day, it IS pretty cool, except maybe for the fact that at time you have to wonder if it really is live....I don't have the "Full Circle" or whatever the dregs (or steve morse band's) other relatively recent live album is, but I've heard that it has the same "problem", that the playing is so perfect it's hard to tell that it's live.....

First off, welcome to the list. It's nice to see the female population of this list getting bigger. :^) From a guy that has very little musical ability but a huge appriciation of music, I understand. There are plenty of us on here who aren't musicians who benefit from this list as well, so don't feel out of place here.

As for the recent flame war, when you have been on this list as long as I have (I've been on here since digest numbers were in the double digits), you find that this happens on a semi-regular basis and you just tune it out. Stick around a while. You'll enjoy it.

    >Aside from that: I'm a Philly fan! Any ytsejam meetings happening at >the concert here?

Too bad we can't convice you to come to DC... :^)

oh shut up :) ::sigh:: now i feel i must clerify..you're only an idiot (refering to hammet) if you don't know what the fuck your doing and you happen upon a sus note at the end of a solo when the rest of the band resolves.. i was just trying to point out an obvious blunder the guy makes on a regular basis.. i never said you "couldn't" end on a sus chord/note..but it's really gotta be in context or it sounds like shit.. and yeah they did that at the marritime show as well and i KNEW someone was gonna bring that shit up :) hehe

Well, to top it all off... The only thing I found entertaining about them was watching the violin player. She rocked, didn't get enough playtime and looked quite mountable (but then, I need glasses, too). Everyone else in the band was a yawn. Their songs all sounded the same, the singer sounded like a bad night club act (and it would have helped if he'd sing).

Altogether it reminded me of sitting through a half hour of William Shatner's lame Priceline.com commercials. I guess some people actually like those. hehehehe. -- KorgX3 thinks Shatner needs beamed up again.
