Me thinks that if you are really going out of your way to see DT that a
quick e-mail to MP could secure you an aftershow pass. MP always seems to
have a tender place in his heart for those who travel far and wide to see
them. Just dont make fun of his Yankees hat.

You must'nt have been paying much attention to our dispute, that whole
little bit that you sent was completely irrelevant. It had absolutely
nothing to do with the arguement. We have been discussing our opinions on
the topic "are musicians artists or entertainers?" Never (not even once)
did anything come up where we were talking about why one listens to the
music that he or she listens to. Again, that wasn't the arguement.
Although, I agree with you completely on what you were getting across in
that last post, you're correct. I'm just saying that that's not what we've
been chatting about.

Now that is really low, he's what he is because he died young??? Maybe
you confused him with Jim Morrison dude. Now THAT's a case of
unjustified figure worshiping.
Doors might be a good band, but the status of Jim is way too high (for a
mortal). I heard he was a very good poet, but I wouldn't know.
McLaughlin, Clapton, those are nice refference. Oh, oh, no, now someone
will come out and say that Clapton was a piece of untalented trashcan,
and the Messuaghahh </choke, choke> guitarist can whipe the floor with
him.
Remember "Clapton is God", Mr. Slowhand. :) Someone who
knows the music back in those days can really see the breakthru Clapton
made with his playing. Go see a The Cream concert. This band pioneered
"something" I can't describe what ... Jack Bruce might be the first
brave guy to show that bass be much more than a rhythm stuff. He tores
the bass apart, as well as Clapton, those were mean extended jams.
Now even for those folks who hates Clapton when we come to McLaughlin
he's quite a guy that you should listen to what he says, no?

Coming off of the Minneapolis show the night before and a theatRE, a very nice one I might add... I thought it'd be tough to top the sound and show of a General Admission event (Milwaukee) The show was to be at "The Rave" which is about a 1200 body place of course that is TOTALLY PACKED! Now, the last indoor tours that I saw DT play there was the Awake tour and FII, they played in the Rave... it was packed. When I found out the show on THIS tour was going to be there... I was suprised, as they always filled the place up. Well, the good thing about this venue is they have 4 stages including what they like to call the Eagles Ballroom or just the Ballroom. If advance ticket sales are big enough, they will move the show upstairs to a much larger, but yet more of an echoey room. This was the case tonight... A lot more room, for the suprising amount of people!! But, every show I have ever seen there has sounded bad!
The Star People started at 7:30 which was 1/2 hour before the scheduled start time of the show (8pm)... I saw most of their show the night before... it was okay, they have a good sound and a good stage show, but just not really my thing, so we just kinda hung out towards the back and saved some energy.
They got done (I love Star Girl!) and then the Dixie Dregs came out soon after. Once again... I saw the show the night before, they are great, I have some CDs...but I stayed towards the back and they did their thing... To me they seemed a little more "on" in Minneapolis.
After they were done... it was time to find a nice spot to stand... i'm 6'3", and there were still some taller dudes in front of me... oh well... but I wasn't up front like all the crazy doods that got there in the afternoon... Laura's Theme started up, the lights went out, and the tick tock of Regression kicked off. (WOOHOO)
DT Came out and ripped through ALL of SFAM with a sound that totally ruled over the night before in Minneapolis. What a pleasant suprise. A room that is known for being an echo chamber by just about any band that has ever played there, or any music fan that has seen a show (and cared about the sound) sounded so sharp, and clear... probably because it was so freakin' loud! But that was just fine. So yeah, the sound was IMHO much better than in MLPS!!!
Now, the setlist:
SFAM yup, the whole thing, no breaks!
During TDOE, Jordan does the Keyboard Solo (WOW!!) with some LTE stuff!
SFAM ends, they go away, let the video of some stuff to go along with track 13, then that ends...
They came back...James said some stuff, and they went into:
Peruvian Skies into Dr. Evil theme from Austin Powers
In Minneapolis, they went right into Paradigm Shift at this point, but in the Brew City, they went right into EROTOMANIA!!!! (Then into Paradigm Shift)
Then the medley to wrap up the show:
PMU/UAGM!!!(double WOW!)/A Fortune In Lies... like the superfast version (TRIPLE WOW!!!)/Only a Matter of Time/Take The Time.
This had to have been the best I have seem them yet. James was just on, John too, and the other John, Mike, and yup, Jordan. This show totally blew Minneapolis away!! Now we'll see what they can do to top this in Chicago tomorrow night. WOOHOO!!
Great to see all the Jammer types in Minneapolis... I think that was the highlight of that trip... The Progtologist, Kirby, Aaron something, Matt and the other guy (i'll remember your name!) making the Mlps, Milw and Chi-town shows, and well, everyone that I saw!! Hope to see you again in Chicago if you are going, and again soon... What a weekend!!!

OK, seriously, I think we're all getting confused by similar sounding
terms. Seems to me (and I could be wrong) that we're mixing up "that
which entertains someone" with "that which is performed". Given that
distinction, I think it is less nasty sounding to refer to (visual)
art and music as entertainment, while remembering that music is (meant
to be) a performance art, while, say, painting is not.
Dream Theater performs, and I am entertained. Ayn Rand sat down and
wrote books, and I am entertained. Yes, both forms of art have
something deep and meaningful to say about the world, and I, for one,
have been enriched after carefully absorbing both. But I can't ignore
the fact that both make my commute seem shorter, too.
I look at it from the other side of the fence, as well. I hope, as a
musician and composer, that what I play changes somebody's day. I
take a lot of care and pride in every note and every word I place in a
song. I write very deliberately, and I'll throw out my favorite lyric
or riff if it detracts from the overall quality I'm hoping the song
will achieve. I really want my audience to take something away from
all this hard work I've done. But, if they smile while I play and
cheer at the end, that's awesome too.

to get the C# locrian riff sounding the way I wanted it to. It's a
key part of the... Sure! I'll have a Guinness. Me? No, I'm single."
There's no such thing as architect groupies. And yet, everyone seems
to be entertained the first time they come to NY and see the
Guggenheim. Go figure.

I've had this "musician/composer/performer" discussion

In fact it was only when Beethoven came along (quite some
time after the beginnings of 'serious' western music with bach
or whoever) that composers and musicians were regarded as
anything more than cheap entertainers. There is a story of
Beethoven refusing to play at a wealthy house after being

yeah he is a very under rated guitarists. the chordal sort
of rhythms he does are unique and he can play some
surprisingly tricky passages.
I have yet to meet anybody who makes art for art's sake.
Well, no one would admit to that, but there are people like Yoko Ono, John Cage
and all that, where you have to question there motives.

Yes, I think they can. The architect who designed the central library building
in my town was praised a lot, for various reasons. One of them was that the
building was designed to make use of the change of sunlight over time. Nothing
technically spectacular or anything like that; merely that the architecture
would appear a bit different during different parts of the day, and therefore
was, in a way, dynamic.

I was at the show in Milwaukee, and it really something! i'm sure they do
that every night, but still, i loved it a bunch and I wanted to know if
anyone got a recording of it and is willing to trade it cause i'd love to
have that. Also, if there's no Milwaukee show on recording (or even if there
is) if anyone has any recordings of Metropolis 2000 where they played the
whole thing straight through, let me know in private e-mail.
Second of all, and maybe most importantly, were the star people. I was
thinking, oh here we go when I saw em first come out, but they did this
little intro thing and i was like "THESE PEOPLE RULE." If anyone knows what
they sound like on album, let me know. I'm sure it's not as great as the
whole show they put on. Talk about an unexpected, and completely entertaining
spectacle!

Here I am reading yet another interview with Yngwie Malnsteen and it had the
usual questions and answers. Then Dale Turner, the interviewer, asks him "Do
you have any opinion at all of some of the 90's shredders like John Petrucci
and Buckethead"?
His answer surprised me.
He replied "I haven't heard of Buckethead. But John Petrucci I've heard. I
think that Dream Theater is a great band."
This was a cool thing to see since this magazine hasn't even mentioned DT in
many months.
And it still SUCKS being in Portland...land of "NO DT concerts this year"!
