Can we let the whole Charles Schultz thing go?
I subscribed to this list to find out the latest details on Dream Theater
that I couldn't get anywhere else..not to listen to people bicker
    about such unrelated topics.
But then again..what do I know? I'm just a poor college student who wakes

    go to the DT concert...uggh.

Napster DOES rule! I don't have a damn clue where else I could have found

I have to agree...even though Korg is quite humorous (as usual) I think
everyone on the jam has been way too bitchy lately (myself probably
    included).

    > the beginning, even when he had the FLU.

On the contrary, I most certainly HAVE seen him on the Q2K tour. The Boston
show, to be exact. And don't even get me started about the whole flu
thing... 'tis true that for the time they were on the stage, Tate did fine.
But, INCLUDING the encore breaks, the band played for a mere hour and 28
minutes that night! This from a band who routinely in the past has played
for at least an hour longer than that. But, that's another point of
discussion, not relevant to this one.

    > Now I'm not going to get into a Q2K argument

Nor will I. I personally didn't care for that album much at all with the
exception of a handful of tracks (ie. Right Side Of My Mind), but again
that's a completely different topic of discussion.

    > but it is a FACT that Geoff Tate still has the technique and range and
    everyone I've
    > spoken to who's seen them on tour will vouch for that. The only people
    saying he
    > has "lost it" are those who didnt bother to see them on the Q2K tour.

"FACT"? Same technique and range as when? The EP/Warning/Rage years? Not
even close. Belive me, I've heard my share of the Ryche over the years (and
I've seen them 7 times), and I've loved them for a long time. And I will
agree with you that Tate is an amazing front man... maybe my favorite of all
time. (Just so you don't think I have it in for the guy.) Nevertheless, you
can't sit there and tell me that he can still comfortably hit all the notes
in, say, "Queen Of the Reich" or "London". I have several bootlegs from the
early years, not to mention the official Live In Tokyo video. The notes he
hit in songs like "Queen" and "Take Hold" in that video were so seemingly
effortless, clean, and powerful. On the Empire and Promised Land tours, he
didn't even TRY to hit the "Take Hold" high note; on the HITNF tour he
actually hit it, but couldn't hold it for as long (although close), and it
    sounded very forced and strained.

The band's even conveniently changed the arrangements to songs like "Lady
Wore Black" and "Killing Words" over the years so that Geoff doesn't even
need to try the original high notes. (I'm not out and out accusing them of
rearranging the songs because of Tate's voice, but it IS awfully convenient.)

And my God, even on the Q2K tour, I'm almost positive he lip synchs the "East
Side meets West Side" parts to "Empire"!

Now, with the both the current writing direction and the current live song
selections, Tate's range isn't tested all that much. By and large, he stays
within a certain range where he's still undoubtably very strong. But by the
same token, I don't think there can be any doubt that his range has shrunk
from what it used to be. You specifically mention the long and "HIGH" note
in "Right Side Of My Mind". Are you talking about the "I'll see you there"
line? If so, yes it is long, and yes he hit it in concert. But no way is it
as high as some of the notes in their earlier material.

Don't get me wrong, I've always thought he's an awesome front man, and still
do. I will be a QR fan for life. But I'm afraid that the years of smoking
have damaged his once pristine voice. I suppose you could chalk it up to
age, but I look at guys like Halford and Dickinson still as strong as they've
ever been, and I can't help but think "what happened to Geoff?" Whether it's
directly caused by the smoking, who knows for sure. But I give the guy
credit - he knows his limitations now and can work around them. That's one
of the signs of a truly great singer, which he definitely is. Too bad he
just isn't what he used to be.

    > Final note on Marc Anthony: Puh-LEEZE~! The guy has a decent voice, which
    > I was only able to discover from seeing his Before-they-were-rockstars thing
    > on VH1, 'cause his present single (ie: the one that got him mainstream

    > much.

I don't claim to be a Marc Anthony expert by any means, but from what I saw
in the HBO concert, that song he has as a single was one of only a couple of
songs the entire night that didn't have me going "wow". It's too bad that
the only song many people associate with the guy is one of his weaker vocal
performances, IMO. Before you knock the guy, do yourself a favor and listen
to more than that one song.

And one final note to KorgX3... yes, Ned and his Cancer Kazoo kick almighty
    ass!! :-)

Sorry for the ramble, folx. Laterz... Matt T.

    Hello everyone,
I'd like to back everyone up that's said the show was awesome it was.
Unfortunately it was so incredibly crowded that at times I was having a
tough time enjoying myself. Anyway, I'm glad I went.

Now to Ticketmaster. I live in Ames Iowa, about 370 miles from Chicago. My
girlfriend and I left for Chicago Saturday morning. About 2.4 hours into
our 5.5 drive I realized neither of us had grabbed the tickets. Fuck! I
called Ticketmaster and told them about the situation, they told me "tough".
Thanks. I realize it was 100% my fault but I had hoped they would work with
me a little more. A buddy of mine offered to drive part of the way and meet
me. I decided to hell with it, Derek Frantz had posted that he had an extra
ticket, I would try to get it and then buy a second. That would be the cost
of education. Jill and I get to the Riviera about 5:15 on Sunday. Huge
line. I can't find Derek anywhere. Oh well, I'll buy two tickets. I'll
for sure NEVER forget them at this cost. Then I find out the concert sold
out. Now I'm screwed. I went in and talked to a guy that worked at the
Riviera. He told me I was screwed but that I might talk to the Ticketmaster
lady that had the will-call tickets. I found her, she hooked me right. She
was also really cool about it considering it was all my fault. Ticketmaster
normally gets a pretty bad rap. This time they came through for me. I
    thought I'd share the story.

    thanks,
    tk

I love OFB's latest CD, I enjoy it more with every listen. The performances are great, James has never sounded better, great soloing, etc... However, has anyone else noticed this? Track 2, Overture 1928 from 2:09 --> 2:25. I'm not a drummer, but listen to the hi-hat (I think). Mike is playing it with his foot in the "up" position (whatever you call that). Does it sound kind of "sloppy" to anyone else? It's like it's not a consistent sounding hit, it's like it's in and out. Kind of hard to explain. But I was just wondering if anyone else noticed. Minor complaint if you can call it that.

    Hey everyone!

I just got back from the DT shows in Minneapolis, Milwaukee, and Chicago, and all I can say is that Dream Theater is at the top of their game. I've never heard them so tight before. I say heard because for two of the three shows I was either in the very back behind a pole or way off to one side where I couldn't see Mike or John P. But all in all, the music, musicianship, and sound were great. :)

So after getting back and reading the latest jam, I see that a lot of people haven't received their Christmas CDs. First, everyone who joined from the middle of December on will receive the second pressing of the CD. You shouldn't expect those until late March at the earliest and probably not until April. This is because the fan club ran out of CDs earlier than expected (hence the repressing and extended deadline).

Second, I've received a lot of email from people who joined back in October or November (or were already members) who still haven't received their CD. Most of these people live in the northeast (Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, other "New" states). Frankly, I don't understand why these people haven't gotten them. I've called it to the attention of the guys in Holland, and I'm waiting to hear what they have to say. So.. just sit tight for a little while longer.

Third, if you joined in the last 2 weeks, I probably have your application in with the huge pile of mail I've been getting recently. (gee I wonder why?) ;) I'm going to slowly start making my way through it starting right now, and I should be through it by the weekend.

Fourth, if you aren't a member of the fan club, you have until Feb. 29 to join. But that means your application and dues must be IN MY BOX no later than 10 am Feb. 29. If you're not sure if you're still a member, drop me an email at dtifc@yahoo.com and I'll look ya up. And information on joining, as well as answers to a few frequently asked questions, can be found at http://www.mikeportnoy.com/usdtifc.html .

Well, I have to say that off-topic stuff such as this is so common... Who's to say whether one off-topic conversation is better than another? Personally, I think that all conversations are okay, considering that there are no rules about NDTC stuff and the fact that these kinds of conversations do apply to all of us.

If you want a forum or mailing list that's STRICTLY DT content, then join themirror@egroups.com (moderated by our lovely Lisa Marie). There are rules there about off-topic content.

Starting or Continuing "Threads From Hell" If a thread gets out of control, please do not continue it. Let it drop or take it to private email. 3. Publically flaming someone on the jam If you really think that you need to flame someone, do it in private email, NOT on the jam. Also, flames which attack people and not what they posted will cause an automatic unsubscription. 6. Reposting large amounts of previous emails in replies Please trim down quoting previoius messages in replies as much as possible. If someone is reading your reply, they probably read the initial mail as well. 9. Top 5/10/20/25/etc lists. Lists like this are not allowed. We don't need my XX favorite guitarists from everyone on the list. If you really want to know these things, do it the way. The right way is to send a mail to the list and have people send ALL replies to you. Then post a summary to the list. 10. Sending offensive stuff to the jam. There is no need to send mail to the jam that offends everyone on the list.

Sorry for the length...Just wanted to prove my point that there are some general rules...I know, I'm kind of anal.

dunno if it was just hotmail messing up the jam, but I thought it was kind of funny that the last issue was nice and orderly (in terms of appearance) until an unsubscribe message came through, when it got all fucked up, until a subscribe message came along and set the jam straight again.....something cosmic about it, y'know?

Speaking of Queensryche, somebody said: >The last 3 albums were a bucket of suck.. Not just one album.. But >then >again thats just my opinion. /me tries to figure out if I missed an album somewhere, seeing as how i consider Promised Land to be the BEST queensryche album :)

and Fran, the song "Bad" is, indeed, a creation by U2....one of my all time favorite songs, by the by

One last request: anyone who's a fan of Iced Earth might do well to check out the Demons and Wizards project that just came out....Jon Schaeffer writing, with the Blind Guardian vocalist handling those chores.....sounds like iced earth musically, or at least the impression of IE that I have from the 5-6 songs I've heard....

Given the fact that i'm supposed to review said disc, any iced earth fan who has the demons and wizards album is invited to help me out by giving me their impression of how D&W compared to recent IE....OK?

thanks in advance Partha ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

While I don't care much for the slagging of the dead/peanuts... I noticed one jammer was a fan of calvin and hobbes.

    Ahoy,

Does anybody know if there are going to be more dates in Texas aside from the current listed one - Dallas on March 10th? There is a 'gap' after that in the dates and I was curious if anyone had any information on other possible shows - Houston for instance. ;) Respond private if you wish - thanks!

Hey all, Here is my list of some cool shit I have for sale. If you are interested, PLEASE e mail me privately. Now, without further adieu here is my list of stuff for sale (available immediately). 1. WDaDU CD. I have 2 copies. You can buy my used copy for $6.00 or my new copy (unopened) for $8.50. You pay shipping (no handling.. just the cost). 2. I have (I think) 3 decent condition RUSH 45 LP's (records for those of you who are not familiar) they are used.. but in playable condition and if you ask my opinion.. a bargain. Will let all go (whatever I have) for $20 (or best reasonable offer +shipping) 3. A 1980's Pearl Bass Drum pedal. In fantastic condition for its age.. I used this for a long time before purchasing a double pedal. Have kept on hand... just in case. I am offering 2 different prices for this, 1. Without the bass drum beater; $25. 2. With the bass drum beater, the beater is a DW beater that cost me $10. I will part with the pedal and the beater for $32. (all prices +actual shipping). 4. A scrathed copy (CD) of "The Quiet Room". I believe that the scratch is repairable and most tracks play without incident. As is, $2 + shipping. 5. (NON MUSIC SALE) A New Analog Microwave oven. Samsung brand. Paid $120 for. Willing to part (with all papers, original box and everything that came with it) For $75 +actual shipping (a bargain!). Works fine.. I made sure. Used once to check if worked. Never needed it because everywhere that I have lived has had a microwave.

Also willing to trade.. if you can't come up with any money for any of the products listed above. Tell me something that you have that is interested and I'll consider it. Bid on! later, J
