    Hello

Just for reference, I renewed in February of 99 and have'nt gotten my X-mas
    cd yet !!
My renewal fee for this year is on its way now.. maybe I'll at least make the
list for the second pressing..Have to admit I'm worried about it...
    I live in North Dakota.....

Thanks for your work, I know it can be trying at times.....
I appreciate it, as a DT fan and an ex-fanclub runner for another band...

[I love OFB's latest CD, I enjoy it more with every listen. The performances
are great, James has never sounded better, great soloing, etc... However,
has anyone else noticed this? Track 2, Overture 1928 from 2:09 --> 2:25.
I'm not a drummer, but listen to the hi-hat (I think). Mike is playing it
with his foot in the "up" position (whatever you call that). Does it sound
kind of "sloppy" to anyone else? It's like it's not a consistent sounding
hit, it's like it's in and out. Kind of hard to explain. But I was just
wondering if anyone else noticed. Minor complaint if you can call it that.]

IMHO, I believe Mike is playing his right high-hats, which have a drop-clutch
for both a "loose" and "tight" feel. (Don't flame me on techincal terms -
I'm only a bassist :P*). Listen to the mix - right after the passage, the
ride comes in on the same side.

I've been looking myself lately, and I haven't seen much of anything.
Tell ya the truth, I'm sort of upset that they split off the prog
section. I kind of liked having Anacrusis right near Anthrax, King
Crimson right in front of King Diamond, stuff like that. :)

Truth be told, Dave, the long-black-curly-haired guy who kinda runs
the place, is a great guy to talk to, if you can get him to not be
busy and super-wired for a couple of minutes. Just stroll back and
ask him what's up with boots. Maybe he got some undue attention from
    the autorities, I don't know.

But he's got a nice pr0n collection back there by the videotapes. :)

I second that one. BTW, I know that a lot of you have probably never given my new favorite band any spins, because they're really underground (well, at least in the US). Honestly, I didn't like them much when I first heard them. But the more I listen, the more they grow on me. I'm speaking of King Crimson. If you're a musician, or a student of theory, or a lover of audio chaos, or just a fan of polyrhythm, you should get something by these guys. The big thing they've done for me is influence me to try drastically new things in my writing and my playing.

The great thing about Crimson is that once you get into the band, and dig a little deeper, you discover a gigantic library of recordings from the individual members of the band (solo, teamed up together, and in other bands). There is *so* much to absorb, that it'll probably take me a lifetime. Cool. Two quick examples: If you've ever heard any Peter Gabriel solo stuff (Tony Levin: bass, stick) or early Yes (Fragile, Close To The Edge, Tales From Topographic Oceans... did I miss one?: Bill Bruford, drums), you've heard the genius of these guys. But you've only scratched the surface of what these guys are capable of. Give it a shot.

    > despite that, thanks, collective jam brethren (and sisthren) for all that > good moozak to which you've introduced me (it needs to be said every once in > a while, methinks)

And mad props to you, Partha, for turning me on to Discipline a couple of years back.

I'd be more upset if he didn't coach such a crappy team (that's for you, Webb. :) Seriously, though, you can't not feel some loss when the guy that invented the 4-3 defense passes away.

But enough of that. Spring training started today. :)

LOL! Hey, Tall Stories was an amazing band. Great melodies, great musicians, and Steve Augeri is now the vocalist for Journey. (Oh, yeah, and they're from New York. :)

Cool side note: I saw Journey last summer at the Beacon. A friend of mine, who's a gigantic Journey fan, and got me into TS about 10 years ago now, demanded we wait backstage to get autographs. OK, fine. The band finally comes out about an hour and a half later, and my friend (along with some 20 other people) are trying unsuccessfully to get the band's attention. I hold up my TS booklet (thanks, Korg) and yell, "Hey, Steve! Recognize this?" He said, "Holy shit!", came over and signed it, and we bullshitted for a few minutes about when I saw them open for Mr. Big at the Ritz in '92 or so.

Which allowed my buddy to get Schon's signature. I'm quite the guy. :)

hey there, that "piece" that everyone likes to point out to me (no offense taken), is spelled like that for a reason. I don't know if you've ever heard of Jimmie's Chicken Shack, but before (and I emphasize _before_ )they sold out to a major record label, I was pretty tight with the original members of the band. And in their original letters, they said "piece" at the end of all of them, and it was mispelled to piss off the people who pointed it out the first time they accidentally mispelled it, so they left it like that. And after awhile of typing it like that, that's what I started using to close my letters. I just thought I would throw that out. Thanks for noticing though. At least you read the posts that are distributed. I'll talk to you later on. Piece. (tee hee)

No Xmas (or Easter) CD here in Georgia, either. for some unknown reason they had completely spaced me off the club membership list (and I've been in since the beginning, even have my card with "member 00121" on it)..... So I had to hastily send in some money before the end of the year, and I'm supposedly in the batch that will be shipped from Europe in March, to arrive here sometime after the Solstice, no doubt.

What puzzles me is why they're sending the CDs piecemeal from Europe to the US, instead of sending them bulk to a US address, then sending them out from here? If a parcel is sent from Europe and the address is old, it should be forwarded...but if there's a problem, or no forwarding address, it DOES NOT go back to the shipper. You have a lot less recourse with international parcels than with items that are sent domestically.

/me shrugs. It would have been a big slow package from Europe to begin with, but at least once they're all over here it then becomes a purely domestic postal affair. :)

I'm french and I love Dream Theater. So I'm wondering why there is only one date in France. Mike has done two clinics in France and I had the chance to see one of them. For a clinic there were a lot of people, so for a concert a lot of persons would go to see Dream Theater. Vive la France, vive Dream Theater -> Dream Theater in France ?

I just got back from seeing DT in Cinci and let me say that the show was flawless. For whatever reason, the Star people didn't play at all (I was elated!). The Dregs were great. We were impressed with them. They're the perfect opening band for DT. They have a different style but at the same time, they play very skillfully and creative but in a totally different direction than DT. These too band's styles seem to complement each other.

DT sounded awseome. The mix was fantastic. Unlike when I saw them on the Infinity tour, I could actually hear the keyboard!

Jordan is a fantastic addition to the band. His synth solo was awesome. They better never get rid of the guy. He's the perfect fit. I noticed that he only played one keyboard. I was told that keyboardist's generally play at least two keyboards because there's a slight gap between changing patches which can only be avoided by using multiple keyboards. He sounded perfect on his one Kurzweil. His synth solo blew us away. He took adantage of midi sequenced back tracks for part of his solo. This can be done cheasy but he did it very very tastefully.

JP was on top of his game. He appeared to have 3 stacks of 4x12 Mesa Boogie Cabs. He also played an Ernie Ball guitar most of the time. I think he got his Ibanez out once. I think he may have missed one frickin note! It was a line that he was doubling with Jordan. He turned to Jordan and smiled as he missed it.

MP is my favorite to watch and I'm a guitarist! This guy's a monster on the drums. He tires me just to watch him.

Myung played great as usual but I thought he was low in the mix at times. I'd like to hear him play a few more solos. I do appreciate that he doesn't overplay though. I'd much rather him underplay like he does than overplay like Sheehan does (just my opinion)

LaBrie sounded great. I have noticed that he can go sharp at times. I think it may be that he's so powerful that he may push the note too hard.

The mix was clear as a bell. I'd like to get my band's mix to sound like that!

The stage show utilized t.v. screens. The video really enhanced the overall stage show. Great idea guys!

If anyone else was at the show, I was sitting with three fans in the first row of the balcony (one of the few places in the place where one can actually sit). We had some of the best seats in the house!

    Greg

    What's up guys?

I've been thinking about getting a keyboard and taking some lessons... But being a guitar player, I know nothing about keyboards... I don't want anything too simple, but as I have a somewhat of a tight budget, I can't afford to get Jordan's Kurzweil (which in addition to being too expensive would be too good for my inexistent skills so far) or something like that... I'll probably be looking for some keyboard where I can fool around with the presets a bit, kinda create some new sounds and not get stuck with 100 or so presets which will do no good for me... So if you guys could give me a hand on this, I'd appreciate it...

    >Ive never been much of a peanuts fan, im more of a Calvin and Hobbes >man myself. I sure miss that :(

Yeah!! Me too... Calvin and Hobbes are probably my favorite comic strip, and I sure miss seeing new strips in the paper everyday... But as some other jammer's already pointed out, their official website www.calvinandhobbes.com is re-running all of their strips, since the first one in 1985 and it's now in 1988/89, so if you wanna check it out, it's totally worth it...

I am now an advocate of planting myself RIGHT behind the soundboard instead of fighting it out in the pit just to count LaBrie's nosehairs...

Chicago was my fifth DT show and the FIRST where I could really hear John Myung, and it was actually a treat. He was waaay up in the mix, which in a live setting is not a bad thing, given that everything tends to be 'tinny' anyway.

Anyway, wonderful, wonderful sound in Chicago. Pretty much the prefect mix of volume and clarity.

BTW, am I the only one that thinks the Ernie Ball Music Man guitars look like toy guitars? There's just something about, say, an Ibanez that says, 'I AM A METAL GUITAR!!!!!'. Stupid as it may sound, the Music Mans just don't make a visual statement. I know, I know, visuals don't mean s**t - it's the sound, stupid.

1)Does anyone know whose the hypnoterapist's voice is in SFAM?

2)Does anyone know with wich song Portnoy and Petrucci ended their clinics in Italy? (Or the song they usually end with, in the clinics)

Cheers mates! Lorenzo ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Yup. I love alot of bass in a live mix. The best sounding concert I think I've ever been to was the Queensryche Promised Land tour back in '95 at the Boise Pavillion. The bass there was LOUD and it kicked ass. I don't get why so many bands are afraid to crank it up. It helps to cancel out that high freq guitar feedback a bit.

    >BTW, am I the only one that thinks the Ernie Ball >Music Man guitars look like toy guitars? There's just

LOL. I agree. :) Steve Morse's guitar reminds me of a glorified version of the harmony guitar I used to have when I started to learn playing. John's looks alright. There's something about pickguards on a guitar which depreciate its eye-candy value, even JEM's bug me for that. -- KorgX3 Bang Tango Oingo Boingo Wang Chung Chaka Kahn . I'm seeing DT in Philly, and I'd like to know what to expect. Could someone...anyone...please post the set list for the one or some of the past shows. I know they play SFAM straight through, and then do a medley, but what songs are in the medley. I've heard that there is no Awake material, so what IAW stuff do they do?
