As KorgX3 wrote, Pink Floyd has gone through three
eras. I highly recommend their most famous/popular
era, the middle years. Get the discs in their actual
    release order:

    Dark Side of the Moon
    Wish You Were Here
    Animals
    The Wall

The early Pink Floyd has the highest likelyhood of
making you dislike Floyd, so don't go there until
    last.

You can't go wrong with The Wall, Animals, Wish You Were Here or Dark Side of
the Moon. All 4 are ESSENTIAL Floyd albums and I persoanlly think that every
human being should own them. My personal fav is the Wall. Many people love
Dark Side the best. Animals is very underated and I think its amazing as
well. The songs are VERY long on there though. But any of those 4 are
terrific. I guess ya might want to start off with Dark Side since it comes
before the other 3 though, and though go chronologically. I have no idea if
    this helps but, oh well!

As any serious Star Trek fan knows, Spock had a huge collection of beer form
all around various places in the alpha quadrant. He didn't let anyone, and
the Rock means ANYONE, touch his beers. Oh, wait a minute....my bad! It's
Spock's Bears. OK, well in that case then, it is well known to any serious
Star Trek fan that at one point Spock bought the Chicago Bears because he
loved football so much. The fact is though, he realized very shortly after
buying them, that the Bears suck ass and got really lucky when they won their
only Super Bowl becasue they had a great defense coached by Buddy Ryan.
So...Spock wound up selling the Bears to the Klingons who quickly killed them
all just for fun and then drank tons of blood wine to celebrate.
                                                -Mike C.

P.S. Yeah, typos do suck but are kinds fun too! I'm sure I got a few myself

Hey Partha! Well, I must say that you certainly have 3 of the "essentials"
already listed. I would also add to the list "Lost In the Sky", which is
hard to find but may be the best sounding I&W boot out there... and the set
list is KILLER!! It's definitely soundboard (I think for an unused radio
broadcast?) and it's the complete show. Another "must" in my opinion is the
one entitled "Uncovered". A 2-CD set of, you guessed it, the entire Ronnie
Scott's gig from the soundboard. Plus, the dude threw on some other cool
stuff like the Beatles medley, Don't Look Past Me, and other stuff to fill
the second CD. Every once in a while, you'll see one of these pop up on eBay.

    Hope this helps!!

    >

I recorded my bands entire album on one Tascam ADAT 8 track with a Mackie 1604 and a peavy board for playback. The big plus for us was that we bought an Audio Techniqua 4033 Studio Condensor mic also... Vocals were so crisp... (compared to the SM 57 we used first...).. anyway, we tilted the guitarists Peavy 5150 cab at about a 35 degree angle in a sound proof room. It was up against one wall pointing directly at a sound barrier on the opposite wall. We took a Sure SM 49 (i think) unidirectional and placed it about 2 inches from the cover on the cab. It was right on the edge of the cone on the bottom left speaker... the key is to get it pointed at a slight angle at the outside ring of the cone...

We also took the Studio condensor and used it as a room mic to get the true sound from 6 feet away...

Hey, ya know I am not a pro-sound guy but i did alot of research and this got us a pretty cool sound... we may have changed some stuff (better close mics) but our budget (of nothing) limited us...

But, if you wanna at least get a good sound try this setup... Also remember not to use the same settings on your amp that you would use for a live concert... you have to make it sound good in that room you are recording in!!!!

If you want to hear kind of what it sounds like check out our website homestead.juno.com/manydeceived/home.html and listen to some of our songs...

(i love how Andrew keeps setting me up....thanks, man :)

okay, the shameless plug part doesn't apply to me, because I'm not hyping anything I've created, nor anything I'm connected with, but....

If you like Pink Floyd's stuff.....you MUST check out Procupine Tree....i cannot emphasize the "MUST" part of that above statement enough. THeir most recent disc, "Stupid Dream" was my fave of 199, for what it's worth, and i think their previous disc (Signify) may be even better.....they get into these bass-mixed-way-up groove trances that you can just get lost in, some great insightful, inciting lyrics, and a space/art/psych/prog rock feel that's just amazing.

A good start for info on this band is the Dark Matter page created by itchy....go to his base page at www.digitalrodent.com/itchy and follow the porcupine tree link....

Apologies for the rambling, but if you're into floyd, I'm thinking that after checking out Porcupine Tree, you just might be thanking me

great news about the Wooten clinic, Jon....now all I need is a big freaking earthquake that just happens to toss Boston some 1000 (???) miles west and land it between Detroit and Ann Arbor, and I might be able to attend one of those clinics.....lucky beantown bastards

Keeping with the bass theme, and in reference to the guy who isn't too big on Billy Sheehan's overplaying style....maybe it just depends on the setting in which it is presented....Just got Niacin's third disc, entitled "Deep", and Sheehan kicks ass all over the disc....as does Dennis Chambers, and for that matter, John Novello......awesome stuff, that, it's got more of a rock feel than a jazz feel, which is a change (imo) from their first two albums.....haven't decided if it's an improvement, because those first two discs are ridiculously cool in their own right. And we americans even get a bonus track :)

I attended the St. Louis show on Monday and it was incredible. For those of you seeing any of the upcoming shows, you are in for a real treat.

I have a great sounding DAT of the St. Louis DT show and Dixie Dregs set as well. I would like to trade for some other recent shows (or older stuff) on DAT. Please no CDR trades right now as I will not have time to put it on CDR for several days.

I offered up my recording of the Munich 1999 show several months ago. I had a lot of people respond that either had nothing to trade or nothing I really wanted. If you were one of those people, I may not have responded to you. I apologize but I was just too busy to respond to everyone. So, what I propose is this. If Bogie has time to put them on Lines in the Sand, I will upload MP3 copies of the Munich 1999 show and St. Louis 2000 show for everyone that has nothing to trade.

Middle class snobs of American society (like, I presume, you imagine me) are also probably the only people who think you're an asshole for voicing an opinion like that about Americans.

Besides, people deal with death in myriad personal ways. Humor is one of those things that helps certain people deal with personal loss. I'm terribly sorry that you were born with a malfunctioning humor gland, but scroll the fuck down.

I love how messages like this try to make *me* feel inferior, like it's *my* fault that I didn't enable the "any old format anyone will ever think up" option in my mailer, or that I'm a cretin because I run a mailer that doesn't accept MIME (which, p.s., is about as useful as its namesake). PGP it and uuencode it. :)

I'm a bass player, but I bought a keyboard last year for pretty much the same reasons. Now, my selection was very personalized, and YMMV. I bought an Alesis QS 6.1. It had all the bells and whistles I was looking for (lotsa sounds, fairly simple to create new patches), and nothing that I knew I'd never use (sequencer). Good enough to break out some piano sheet music and remind myself how much I suck :), and also good enough to play with patches and create something resembling the sound in QR's "Best I Can". Also, some pretty nice organ sounds (oh, how I would love a real B3, but these sounds are up there). My keyboard player has a QS 7 and, he being the big-time Emerson/Wakeman fan, can rather closely approximate some of Emerson's sounds with that board (which has the same brains, more keys, more other random shit). I paid $899 for the board, and got a gig bag, stand, phones, etc for not too bad (local music dealers kick Sam Ash's ass any day of the week and twice on Sunday).

Harmony! My first bass was a Harmony. $150 new, about 12 years ago now. That and the $80 Ross amp, and I was all set to be JPJ. :) I think the bass was heavier than the amp, and you could have used it to shoot arrows. I really don't miss it. :)

    Speaking as an Ibanez user,

That blue Music Man that JP is using sounds and looks amazing to me. It's startling that you can actually hear such a significant difference between his Ibanezi (that's plural) and the new axe. When he switches from the camo JPM to the Music Man, it's like they turned the lights on, sonically. Vastly superior instrument, to my ears. I wonder if EB has any intention of doing a 7 string.

Oh, and anyone who may have been wondering, Floyd Rose IS selling 7 string trems now. You can officially build your own 7 string with a whammy, without having to use Ibanez parts, if you're a stickler. I didn't see any locking nut (don't go there) but you could always use sperzels.

yeah... i think Rush Cygnus X-1 book II should be in the playlist, The Sphere: A Kind of Dream part is a killer... or maybe The Fountain of Lamneth .. i remember somebody here in the jam mentioned Rush as the 'root' of prog metal too...

hei, Sigit... is it M97 FM classic rock radio, you gonna put on the show??? their progressive night every monday is great!!! they even use the snippet from Met:2 on the ad... there's a prog night too here in Bandung, every saturday night, GMR 104.4, they always play Karn Evil no.9 as the opener...

and, oh... the jam still kick major butt, though =) esp Korgie ;-) Akar

In addition to what you listed, maybe Lost In The Sky and Uncovered. Of course, back then, CD-Rs were not nearly as common as they are now, and either LitS or DoE had that sweet, oversized packaging that you just can't copy. But now, what's to stop you from getting damn near all of the boots, good and bad?

Oops - I almost forgot Stream of Consciousness! ;)

I will second Partha's recommendation of Porcupine Tree. Even if you don't necessarily like Pink Floyd, check them out anyway. "Pink Floyd with balls" is how they were first described to me and their CD "The Sky Moves Sideways" certainly fits that bill. The band has developed more of their own sound with each new CD. I think "Signify" is the best, but who knows how accurate my opinion is...

I really, really, really, really, really, really, really wanna go to the show, but I have no idea how to go about getting the info I need. I'd like to find out ticket prices, where the venue is, where I can get tickets, et cetera. Can anyone out there help me? I have a big group that want to go.
