    Alright i just have a few things to say:
    1) On KISS: i didnt like them to begin with, either...to whoever put that
    2) On basses: If you can afford one, Soundgear basses are really, really
    nice. They're by Ibanez, for those of you who care or don't know...I got a 5
    string, the SR 305 DX...it's super nice. Alvarez made a really, really good
    acoustic 4 string, i forget what kind it is, but it's very expensive, so if
    you're starting out, I wouldn't start on an acoustic first of all...I
    personally started on a Rickenbacker, and then a Soundgear, with the B as the
    5th string..I was borrowing it cuz I was playing for someone's band. Anywayz
    'nuff about all that.
    3) Yes, yes it is a bass, but On the RBX6JM: SUPER SWEET, DUDE!!!! I
    walked into Russo's (a nice music store a little ways from me) and asked if
    they had it, so the dude went into the back because he wasn't sure if they
    did, and came back with a cardboard box, sealed, with The Bass
    inside...hehe...it was super sweet. I felt all special cuz i was the first
    person to play it :)
    Okay well in any case, I was there for a very long while playing it until I
    had to leave, and whenever I can I go back to play it. That thing is sooooo
    nice. I have small hands for a bass player, but the neck is barely thicker
    than my 5stringer's!! Super nice, dude, super nice!
    For anyone who cares: Anyone try/have the BP8 processor? It's really
    nifty...I especially like what you can do with the wah's on there and the
    harmonies and stuff. It's got tons of stuff on there...very sweet, again...

    Two questions:

    1.) On average, how long have the DT shows been running? I'm going to a
    friend's house after the Roseland show and I have to let him know roughly
    when I'll get there. I don't want to tell him I'll be there at 12 and
    walk in at 3AM.

    2.) Before christmas last year, I found a used Ibanez 540R on consignment
    at a local music store. To make a long story short, my folks surprised me
    by buying it for me for christmas. Now I've got this cool guitar, but I
    don't know anything about it except that it was made in 1991, has a
    rosewood fretboard, and has a lo pro edge tremolo. Except for the tremolo
    limiters, everything appears to be stock. Can anyone tell me more about
    it?

    I happened to catch the conversation about bass guitars. I noticed Harmony
    was mentioned. That was my first bass when I first started. I thought it was
    good. It looked somewhat like a Fender, but it weighed a ton! After a while,
    I ditched it and bought an Epiphone. I like the way it looked and it was
    cheap. So I used that for 3 or 4 years, until I picked up an Ibanez SR500. I
    finally got a great sounding bass with great electronics, and a killer
    price.

    I recently bought the new Peavey G-Bass. I wasn't to fond on Peavey, but
    when I picked this bass up and played, I fell in love. It lists for around
    $900 I think. It is a great bass. The tone is unbelievable and the active EQ
    is excellent. There is a 3 band eq plus volume control on it. The EQ's
    actually have a separate battery for it. I think it's a great bass. I'd like
    to get into the 6 string, but I think I will wait a couple years.

    But I do agree with Matthew. More expensive is not exactley better. There
    are basses and guitars that are way overpriced, and it might not be for you.
    When people ask me "Why do you have a Peavey? They suck" Wrong. They have
    improved their instruments greatly, at least IMO. They have one called
    Cirrus. It's a beautiful bass. I also agree with him that you definitely
    want to play on something not to cheap. I think when you buy a new piece of
    equiptment, it changes your mindset, and you tend to improve, because it's
    new, and you want to play the hell out of it. Start small, and then build
    up. It's not worth buying a $1000 bass, and 4x10 cab, and a 15 cab, when you
    start out.

    Nice post Matt. That was perfect. I hope this was ok. I really don't know
    what this whole discussion is about except something about starting out and
    buying a Harmony. I don't know, I might be way off bass. No pun intended.

    Actually, I was only in the Fanta-Seeya! Diner for about 30 seconds.
    Trey Allen, Brandon F., Bafu and I had just pulled in and we went
    inside and that was at about the same time everyone bugged out because
    the proprietor got mad. I'm not sure Bafu even made it inside; when
    we pulled into the parking lot someone was yelling "Where's that
    asshole Bafu!" and he was sorta cowering in the back seat next to me.
    :)

    I've done a few DT roadtrips since then, and had a helluva time on all
    of them, but THAT one was the first and still the neetest. I'll never
    forget when we finally got to the motel on L.I. after the loong drive
    up and Trey and Brandon, both from Jacksonville, Fla., got out of the
    car. They basically had never seen "real" snow before -- which made
    riding in 18-yr old Trey's car THAT much more interesting on those
    icy roads -- and they kinda looked at eachother, shrugged, and ran
    pell-mell toward a big snowdrift and jumped into it. Me 'n' Bafu were
    dyin'......

    I think Matt said just about everything I would have said on this topic, but I thought I'd mention some things that I've noticed, as a guitar teacher (can you imagine the torture of taking a guitar lesson from ME? Muahaha!)

    There are 2 very very big problems with buying the bottom of the barrel beginner instrument. They stand out as a much bigger issue on guitar and bass than most anywhere else.

    1). Tuning/Intonation. The really cheap, and really cheesy beginner instruments RARELY have decent hardware, as it pertains to tuners and bridges. This is a MUCH MUCH bigger problem than you would think. A player who has been around a while can deal with bad intonation, to some extent... covering for the problem. And he can tune and retune while playing, should the need arise. This is because he (or she) has developed some sense of pitch. A newcomer will not necessarily have this benefit. I've had students come to me and say "I put it in the case after you tuned it, and I couldn't get it back in tune again, all week." That's a lot of time and stress to waste, instead of saving an extra hundred bucks. The entry level guitars and basses out there are simply not worth the investment in quality hardware, as the cost of a decent set of locking tuners will already drive up the price at least $50. And if you were to upgrade, you'll soon find other flaws... the pickups, the wiring, the neck... it doesn't pan our to a wise investment. It begs the AMG Pacer argument that Matt brought up (which I agree with, for the most part, though you can certainly turn a decent guitar into a great guitar, with work)

    2). The neck / action. I have one of those Peavey basses that weigh 1700 lbs. I don't know why it weighs that much. Someone at the plant must have misunderstood the implication of the word "heavy". Anyways, I got the thing for free, so what the hell. I've known several great bassists in my short time, and I've learned a few tricks here and there, insofar as technical things (several types of slaps and taps, etc). Almost none of what I know can be played on this bass, by me or anyone else. The action is so high, and the neck is so crappy, that it's worthless to try! I am certain that I'd have quit if I had started on an instrument like this.

    When you can get a decent guitar for $250-300, or a great guitar starting at around $500, why not save up? Use a friend's guitar or bass to practice on, or to bring to lessons. Save money on an amp at first... don't skimp on the shit you have to put directly in your hands!

    Just thought I'd mention that on metal-sludge.com, which posts Soundscan sales number for albums in the US, it lists that SFAM has sold 67,456 copies in the US thus far. Now, these numbers are accuratate but are not what Billbard reports. On Billboard's charts, and RIAA certifications, they list the sales number for album to retail stores. For example, KoRn's latest album, Issues is listed as being triple platinum by the RIAA and on the Billbard charts. However, the actual Soundscan number of albums sold to actua consumers (as opposed to retail outlets) is 2,112,609. So, on a Billboard chart, if it were listed, SFAM's sales numbers would be higher than 67,456. Just thought I'd give everyone an update.

    I didn't really hear much of a difference in the sound between the two guitars, well, not enough to take notice anyways. It was pretty funky seeing this mini-fender being played with a sound so heavy coming through the PA. It's so hard to be heavy when you're playing with a pick guard. They're sorta like condoms for the guitar, now that I think about it....and on that segue,

    UNO OTRO thing I had to spit out in this forum de la musica. Has anybody heard of a classical flamenco guitarist by the name of Esteban? He's an Arizona resident and had a special on PBS (Channel 8, Arizona State University) during their last fund raiser this past season, with his daughter playing the violin in accompanyment to his awesome guitar. The performance has inspired me to pick up yet more instruments and seek more of a musical collection in the classical/flamenco. I HIGHLY recommend any fan of classical music and classical guitar to check this dude out, the only problem is...I don't know where to buy his CDs. No web sites either. Maybe I was just hallucenating again from working with too many oil paints and subconsciously made this guy up.

    I went to see Yes last night in Glasgow. I didn't know any of the songs, but I quite enjoyed it. The Russian keyboard player was very cool; Steve Howe's guitar playing was extremely sloppy.

    Wait, you mean you'd even CONSIDER getting rid of your first? I started out with a strat copy I bought off my sister for )BŁ5, and it's still loved and played to this day. Albeit it's been customised as hell (all-black finish and plate, neck sanded down to the wood and oiled, black-covered DiMarzios...OK, I was going through a Kirk Hammet phase!), but it's still pretty cool to have a muck around on. Never chuck out old guitars!

    That'd be why it's crap, then. I can almost listen to Relics, but it's beyond me how anyone can say that losing Barrett counted as a loss to Floyd. Horrible album.

    Actually, the crappiest thing I ever saw was a couple of years ago, some woman wrote a fantasy novel called "Piper At The Gates of Dawn", and I just broke down in fits of laughter in her absence.

    Actually, my take on Rob's original post was that he's not blaming Kirby directly for the CD delay (which it sounded like you were implying in your post, d-man). I don't think there's any question that she's not at fault here. In fact, I don't have anything bad to say about her. I e-mailed her politely asking what was the deal with the X-Mas CD and my subscription, and I got a polite response. I think what Rob was getting at was that like you say, she's the go-between for US folks to get in contact with the actual operation. By asking Nicole for another copy, I doubt that it was meant to be a knock on her directly. But, she is the point of contact for the US subscription folks, so maybe through her something can be done.

    Cyberduke, It doesn't matter how many times you try to point out that DT was influenced by Pink Floyd, or that "The Spirit Carries On" sounds very Floyd-esque. We know this already. And it doesn't matter how many other "reputable sources" you quote to make your point. Those of us who don't like PF, still won't like them. You can't "convince" us that we're wrong. Our tastes are what they are, and no amount of "logical argument" is going to change them. Personally, I find most of their music boring. That's right, I said boring. It's OK in small doses, or as background music, but I can't really say I like it. I used to like them, but the more I listened (and the more rock radio stations play them to death) the less interested I became. As "Pink Floyd" as The Spirit Carries On sounds, it has a couple of things going for it that make it much better than any PF song, IMO: DT has a vastly superior vocalist, and it's just one song. The Pink Floyd elements on SFAM are spread around and interspersed amidst many different styles that are nicely juxtaposed. If DT came out with an entire album of nothing but stuff that sounded like PF, then I probably would not like it either.... Oh, well, enough on this. I thought this topic was dead, but you seem to resurrect it at any opportunity, so I felt compelled to comment. I think I shall return to lurking now....

    I was just listenening to Scenes for about the 50th time and realized that this album is by far their best since I&W. It hasn't lost any of its longevity like FII did. I might get flammed for this, but I popped in Awake yesterday and started listening to James' growling vocals, and I said "Fuck this I'm putting Scenes back in the Player." I think it's their best produced album, and I have finally come to the opinion that it IS a lyrically strong album. And the way James sings on this album is his best (ACOS too maybe). I think that Fatal Tragedy seriously kicks ass, THE is a beautiful ballad sung with a lot of emotion, Home is a killer tune as well, andTDOE is pure liquid insanity. I even look forward to songs like BTL. It took a while for me to get used to that "trumpet part," but now I even like that. I actually see how it's like metal jazz fusion and it does fit. If someone asked me what album to buy first for DT to get a taste of them i would tell them SFAM. My first Pink Floyd Album would be Meddle. I think that Echoes captures more of what Floyd is about than any one song in my humble opinion, and if you haven't heard like every song on the radio from Dark Side of the Moon than get that masterpiece. Many jammers are listing The final cut, but I saw that as their weakest album. Definitely get The Wall if you're into the epic. Wish you were here and Animals (their most underrated album) are also A calliber classics. Finally, on thing that I really enjoy is the Pulse Video, and if you have a Hi-Fi VCR you're in for a treat because that version of One of These Days and High Hopes is phenomenal. And by the way 94 PF Division Bell was by far the best concert I've ever seen and that includes seeing DT 5 great times and Liquid Tension once. Sorry so long sincerely Chris
