Yes you are right... But he would only need 3 cabs to do
what your saying. In my SR (sound reinforcement) class we
talked about how guitarists use large rigs but are maybe
only using one cab. The rest are for looks. I have no
idea if this is what John is doing for this tour but it
doesn't make to much sense to be using the other 3 cabs
(thats a lot of Power). But who knows... Maybe someone
cold ask the sound engineer at one of the upcoming shows.

Ok, I see all these posts about how great the show is from Dream Theater,
that is a given. I can't wait to see them rip up the house, I wouldn't
expect anything less from them! But what about these opening bands I keep
hearing about? How much ass do the Dixie Dregs kick? Has anybody seen the
"Star pepople?" they are supposed to open in Orlando in 2 weeks and i'll be
    there.
I'm going to the show in Philly the week before. I hate when the opening
bands suck. I saw Savatage last year and the opening bands sucked. It
seemed like forever before Savatage came out and blew us away. It was
amazing. There couldn't have been more than 300 people there but they
played like it was a million.

And, does anyone want to point out a good prog rock/metal news source....i
want something concise, rather than having to wade through way too much
shit, like on th PM board or other open posting venues

Right now, I look at the DURP site which gets advertised on here every once
in a while (it's actually pretty good, see story below), but i was wondering
if there were other decent sources....

as for the DURP thing, one of the news postings mentioned a contest being
conducted by the band landmarq for autographed copies of their new live
disc.....i'd never heard of the band before, but i went over to their site,
looked through the info there for the answer to a coupla question and then
guessed correctly as to which of three young sisters in a photograph grew up
to be the lead singer for that band.

And, long story finally coming to its point, my copy of Thunderstruck
arrived in the mail today. First half-listen, it has definite Marillion/IQ
leanings, pretty good stuff over all. I like the singer's voice, one of the
tracks is musically quiet, and depends on her to carry the song, and she
    does it well

Might be worth checking out for those of you interested in the keyboard led
prog rock with female vocals side of things

No offense to any women on this list, or women in

    Trent,

I agree with you, wholeheartedly. A good example: ask a woman why she
wears make-up, and she'll look at you strangely, as if to say "What do you
mean? Because we HAVE to." There are exceptions to this too, such as
Gineane Garofolo (unsure of spelling). I don't know why that is, I suppose
maybe it's something that can't be helped. Something like the fact that
women become drunk more quickly than men. No offense meant, no sexual
    discrimination - just a fact.
It just seems to me (and Trent) that women are more easily assimilated
into the giant teen-driven machine, called Pop Culture, that we all love to
hate. Admit it folks, if it wasn't for all of those teeny-boppers out there
this list wouldn't be half as busy as it is now. 75% of the conversations
with my good friends at school deal with how ignorant the masses can be.
Ignorance is bliss, so why not just "go with the flow" and make life easy on
    yourself?
I have nothing against pop music though, I don't limit myself by genre,
that would also be practicing ignorance. It all comes down to motive, not
preference. If somebody likes pop because it's what he or she likes, then
so be it. It's when somebody says that he or she likes the music that he or
she listens to because "everybody else does" that I become irate. I
remember a time in school when somebody said "I don't listen to 'old music',
that's jus' stupid, yo!" I wanted to yell "Listen, you fucking idiot,
what's the matter with you?!?! If somebody likes older music, so what?" He
wouldn't have listened, though, so it would have been all for naught.
Anyway ladies and gentlemen... please don't flame me. I mean no harm, I'm
just supplementing Trent's opinion and stating my own. If anyone IS
offended by my opinions, then I apologize in advance, because I sure wasn't
aiming to be offensive. This may not have anything to do with Dream Theater
specifically, but it relates to older and newer progressive rock/metal
    indirectly.

Yes, let's restate that one more time-- NOT sexism,
just an opinion based on observation. My g/f "just
    [doesn't] like 'guitar-based music'." As if that's
all I ever play... As for Janeane Garoafalo <sp for

I read one time (dunno where) that women are
supposedly more into music than guys are. So I
thought about that-- I buy CDs kinda frequently, but
she probably buys 'em more frequently. Stuff like
Eagle Eye Cherry, Dixie Chicks (nothing against the
Dixies; I'm a fan myself), and other pop phenoms like
that. So, I submit that women may be *more CDs than
men*, but they don't seem to have as much of the
    appreciation factor going on.

I agree. I guess you can play "Kashmir" for some
prick who thinks he's listening to Puff Daddy, but at
the end of the day he's going to get into his SUV,
blast his Korn music and get the fuck out there.

    > I have nothing against pop music though, I
    > don't limit myself by genre,

Here here!! I like the Dixie Chicks. They seem to be
everything that's right with pop music. Fully capable
of creating a top notch album, but can also write a
catchy as hell too. Plus I fell in love with the lead
singer when I first saw a pic, but this isn't based on
lust (well, not totally anyway ;o) ).

I can't speak for everyone, but I've never heard that.
That's about as close to an open admission of
sheep-dom as you're ever going to get. I've never
kept tabs and taken surveys, but I use my g/f as a
measuring stick for other people. She likes pretty
much all pop music. She takes a dim view of my fandom
of r.e.m., Pearl Jam, DT, and the other bands that I
really enjoy. The emotional content of those bands
are lost on here. Pop music (which appeals to her)
seems to be "from me to you" love poem shlock songs.
Not always. Every now and then, you'll get something
special (again, Dixie Chicks). But usually, what you
    get is Britney Spears. *sigh*

I love Led Zep, probably always will. Loud, "old"
guitar music (not just guitar tho). I love it.

There's no convincing certain people on certain
    issues.

I agree. Bands like DT aren't afraid to play loud
when the song calls for it. It's kinda comforting to
be able to put a DT disc on and have it change my mood
for the day. Sorry if this double posts. Technical difficulties.

YES!!! That's what my voice teacher stresses SO much, and it's what I've
really been working on for five and a half semesters now: FREE TONE.
She's always telling me that when my throat is open, and I'm singing with
NO tension in my voice, it will last much longer and keep me in shape for
    longer periods of time.

And the thing is that I've noticed it. As I begin to sing with a freer
tone, my voice is able to go longer periods of time without becoming
    scratched or tired. Go figure.

    > (The dirtly little secret is James is a baritone, too. Shhhh.)

I thought I was the ONLY guy who thought this. James has a very deep tone
for a tenor. While it IS possible for a tenor to have a deep tone (he
just isn't considered a "lyric" tenor at that point), the real key point
is the range. I don't know ANY tenors who can sing a low A healthily, yet
that is EXACTLY what James does in Voices (The BG vox on "Is there fantasy
in refuge, God in politicians," and "I'm" of "I'm lying here in bed").
That's a real key thing that shows that he's not meant to sing that high
and that he's in fact damaging his voice when he tries to do it for too
long. I mean, I have a range that lets me sing up to high A's and Bb's
and even C or D on a good day (when I'm SCREAMING, that is), but it
doesn't mean I should be able to do it all the time. And I'm considered a
    HIGH baritone.

It could easily be that it was either falling out or that he wanted to
push it in farther to get more of the bass out of it. If you ever notice:
When you push in headphones so that less air escapes out of them or, in
the case of ear-mold monitors, so that the speaker is closer to your
eardrum, you get a fuller tone in the monitors and a cleaner sound from
the tiny little speaker. I bet that's what he was doing.

As much as I love John Petrucci, sometimes he gets a little repetitive don't
    people think?
In particular his use of suspended chords is getting a bit out of hand, and also
    that octave
riff found in Necrominicon, all of SFAM and also in his magazine column- sure they
    sound
cool but they're way to cliched for a prog group.

I think its true men are more obsessive about complex stuff than women. Thats why
about 99% of Dungeons and Dragon/Magic/Warhammer etc players are men. Its also
been shown that women are way more inclined to be swayed by advertisments than men
    are, although I don't know if there's a correlation.

Did they have the Timmons model on display? I was really hoping to get a
hold of one of those. Yes, they are a bit more simplistic in design, but
from what I gather... they were going for a strat vibe. His lead tone on
his latest CD, "The Spoken And Unspoken" is amazing!! I'm still really
pleased with the PGM... and besides... it's got (painted) f holes AND
    reverse headstock! Way cool! :)P

    Hello,

I wonder if this happened to anyone else? I received digest 5320 as a
TOTALLY blank mail, there's just nothing in it. May it be because I use
    Netscape 4.7 for Mac?

I liked her nice'n'cute conservative era. Now she is like a mid- teens girl who is doing make-up with her girlfriends, etc.

But I have to say that I have this fantasy about Mariah Carey singing "Voices". Take a second to imagine that!

In beyond this life BTL "they continued to in-vesti-gate" should be sung by TOM ARAYA, man! I am sure MP would agree to this.

As for the rest, I will leave James LaBrie. :)

This is the second time I write to this list but have been on the list for about five months. Here has been very good informations about JP's new guitar but I'm not sure if anyone has told anything about the bridge except that it is Piezo pickupped one. So DOES Petrucci's new Music Man have a Floyd Rose tremolo? I don't know much about these Piezo pickups so my question can be a stupid one but who cares..

I have Ibanez RG 420 myself and will buy RG 550 in near future and I'm a big fan of Ibanez guitars as well as JP (Petrucci is the greatest!). Now I'm quite disappointed that JP left Ibanez because JPM models are one of the finest guitars I think. Of course the looks is just one thing about a guitar but I think that most of the Music Man models are quite ugly looking guitars. I haven't seen Metropolis 2000 show yet but am waiting for it so much and am very curious about how does JP's new guitar look and sound like.

By the way I bought new Stratovarius album Infinite yesterday from Oulu(, Finland)..have other Finnish jammers bought it already? I think it's quite super (as big Gay Al from South Park would put it) and it really has some new influences! I have listened to it from beginnig to end about ten times but still I'm not fully convinced about it except for some songs which are great stuff ( Phoenix, A Million Lightyears Away ). By now I can say that it's quite good album but maybe time makes it better.

Ooops, sorry, never thought I'd make that mistake. This letter was obviously supposed to be private. I'll translate it for you:

An anvil is a drink based on Romulan ale and vinegar. There is a rumour saying that Charles Shultz and Charlie Dominici have once been spotted drinking anvils together in a bar in Paris (to add some DT-content to a crappy joke).

I happen to be a women and Trent's post makes me want to roar(ha ha).

I listen to bands such as Rush, Yes, King's X, Fates Warning,(just starting to get into Spock's Bears) etc. And DT is of course my all time favorite. I tend to drive my family and friends crazy by always talking about how great DT is.

When I was at the SFAM show I talked to a lot of female fans, including Kirby. I am very aware that we(woman) are in the minority, but what does that matter.

When I was at Mars to see Mike and Rod, I was talking to a Mars security person, and she said, There sure are not many women here, the guys in the band must not be very attractive. Yikes, I couldn't beleive she said that.. Dt is about the music!!!! and that is why I love the band.

Just saw the Detroit show last night, everything was awesome except the weather. Everybody was freezing in the line before the show because of the cold wind, but it was well worth it when the show finally began. John petrucci's ernie ball guitar is pretty cool, it looks like it has piezo pickup system in it, wich he uses for the acoustic guitar parts along with his normal pickups for the distorted parts. The whammy bar doesn't seem like it would be to good for really hard bending though, because it doesn't have locking nuts on it or a recessed tremolo cavity, but it sounded great anyway. It's pickup design is kind of like the new double edge guitars ibanez is coming out wich will have a piezo bridge combined with the normal passive pickups, with two outputs. Anyway, I can't wait to see them again in the summer it will nothing short of amazing! see ya __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! I just wanted to say that I went to the Metropolis 2K show in Detroit last night and it was awesome. I just couldn't believe I was seeing these guys for the first time. After the show we waited around for an hour and 45 minutes in the cold and as tired as they were, all five of the guys came out and talked to the ten of us who were braving the snow. The signed some autographs, I got a picture with each of them, and my friend Eric even talked gear w/JP for a few minutes. So for anyone who is thinking about whether or not to wait a couple of hours to meet these guys, DO SO, It's worth it.

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids.....

Kurt remarked: >I wish all rock shows were like that one. That ruled. Who was the Scorps >drummer? I was impressed with his solo, but he wastes his talent playing >Rock Like a Hurricane.

That would be James Kottak, formerly of Kingdom Come (where he was also wasted in my not so humble opinion). :)

Incidentally, for an excellent fanpage with tons of Scorpions info you can drop by http://www.scorps.com/ . NOT http://www.scorpions.com/ ; you'll get quite a surprise if you hit that one. :)

D "it's good to be back" Man remarked: >Holy shit, Ron Thal's insane. I can't remember now whether it was >Bafu or Mads that got me to buy a Ron Thal disc, but the argument he >presented was: "When Steve Vai has nightmares, they feature the music >of Ron Thal."

That was Ptacek, all right. It was the same quote that interested me enough to pick up "The Adventures of Bumblefoot". :)

Vai makes guitars do things you would think they couldn't do. Ron Thal makes guitars do things they CAN'T do. The man is phenomenal. Mads, does he *ever* tour?

    cheers, Phil
