If you've never heard "Last of the Runaways" by Giant, you really should. The sound and production on this CD are flawless. The drum sounds alone are enough to make the album, but the guitar sound is HUGE!!!!!!!! Check it out.

"Last Of The Runaways" is a great album! Unfortunately, hey only had one
"hit" off the album, and were never spoken of again. How is their second
    album?

Somebody mentioned LaBrie's vocals earlier (I'm slow). I think his best
vocal stuff has been outside of Dream Theater. His performances on Sheer
Heart Attack and One Vision on the Queen tribute (Dragon Attack), as well as
The Explorer's Club CD are outstanding!
I've been disputed many times for what I'm about to say, but I think
LaBrie's best vocals on a Dream Theater album are definitely SFAM! Not only
is he relaxed, but he's got that Roger Waters vibe down perfect at the
beginning of "The Spirit Carries On".

    > What the hell is a nervous flashlight?
Too funny. Maybe it's one of those small flashlights who feels

I consider "Time to Burn" to be about equally as good. The songwriting and
production were very similar to "Last of the Runaways." Lots of memorable
songs, they just didn't get any radio hits.

Another band in a similar vein as Giant that was a one-hit wonder, yet their
album was completely excellent was "Alias." Remember them? "I need you
now... More Than Words Can Say... I need you now..." And then there's
Glass Tiger... :) One of my favorite 80's bands. Their "Diamond Sun" album
is more than worth the $2.99 you can often find it in the bargain bins for.

Well, obviously it is to some extent. We're talking about an art here, so it's definitely subjective. However, to someone who's read much, or studied literature, or even listened to many good lyrics, it should be obvious that SFaM could have been done better. If you don't agree with that, I'm just going to have to recommend you take a break from the singing exercises there and do some reading other than USA Today.

    >> Blah, blah, blah, blah. Sheesh. Correctly my ass. Correctly for the kind of >> music you're doing, sure. Heh, if you insist. Let's think about this. How many people listen to stuff where the singer has "good technique?" How many people listen to stuff where the singer has poor technique but a lot of feel? I think the answer is obvious by looking at sales charts. Fact is, most people put feel over technique. They care about what it sounds like, not how it's done.

    >> To say that's the ONLY correct way to sing for ANY kind of music is arrogant >> and assinine. Think of any rock band that really gets you going...Led Zep, >> Megadeth, Rush, Slayer, Anthrax, whoever it might be. It would not work with >> "correct" singing. > > I went to McDonald's drive-through today. I pulled right into the exit and > ordered my food through my passenger side window. Oh please, now you're being ridiculous. First, that WOULDN'T work. They wouldn't let you order from the payment window (trust me I've tried), and if anyone else was in the line you'd hit 'em head on. So it's not analogous. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy, Stevie. If you're going to argue, put some thought into it. More importantly, you still just can't get past the central issue. Tell me, please, exactly why vibrato is "correct." Let's define this before we go any further.

    > Ok, fine. You don't like it. It makes ME laugh when people who think > someone being good at something is somehow a joke. It's pretty pitiful when > people feel that way, but I guess ignorance is bliss.

Nice try, buddy. I'm ignorant? Once again you shoot yourself in the foot by throwing out things you can't back up. I've been in choirs my entire life. I've studied with a nationally known PhD and a vocal coach who herself studied at Texas with some internationally known teachers and has performed at Carnegie Hall. I attend operas. I know exactly what we're talking about here, I just don't think there's any reason to enforce one set of standards on other types of music.

    > I feel the same way. I just don't understand it. I will NEVER hear a > musician play/sing something with good technique and wonder "why is he > trying so hard?" I hate this mentality that trying to be good at something > is a bad thing.

I won't either, but when somebody is obviously just showing off, putting some marvelous "technique" in a place that does shit for the song, I'll wonder why he's trying so hard...to gratify his ego.

    > From: "Steven Zebrowski" <szebro1@gl.umbc.edu> > > Well, if it's just one nostril or the other, you're probably ok. If it's > ONE all the time, that could be a problem, but if it switches, it's nothing > to really worry about.

Nope, not at all. It's a natural function of your body, the two nostrils don't work at the same time. They switch off. Don't know why this is, but it is. Strange the way the body works.

    >> As far as I'm concerned there is no correct way to do anything in music, >> despite what some people say. > > That explains a lot.

Heh, yeah, it does tell you a lot about my perspective. I think you're being petty and small-minded to try and imply that I'm stupid for thinking that way, however. Face it. It's an art. It's subjective. The only reason anything is considered "correct" is become somebody once decided that that was the best way to do it, and started teaching it that way, and other people picked up on it, and it became tradition. There are some things that are good guidelines; for example, if you only pick guitar with downstrokes, you're not going to get very far. But as for being correct...well...if your musical vision doesn't require you to get that far, it doesn't really matter, does it.

    > Yup. I can't say much for the other bands, cause I think Rush is great how > they are. Don't listen to any Slayer or Anthraxx(mostly because there's no > singing). Led Zep and Megadeth, however, would both be VASTLY improved by a > talented singer. My opinion.

Hah, Geddy Lee screeches like a whore getting a clitorectomy on the early Rush. If Anthrax isn't singing, neither is that crap. As for Zep and Deth, I'm gonna have to agree with Gaz here...you might think they'd sound better, but for most people, that would kill the band's sound. The only reason 'deth got anywhere to begin with, I firmly believe, is because of the unique sound that Dave's voice gave them. If they got someone who sang "correctly" they'd sound like 40 other 80's speed bands.

Hey, speaking of that new Stratovarius, I've got a question - Is it just like all the other Strato releases ? I mean, I love the band and all, but the past few releases have been nearly exactly the same style, so owning more than a couple of albums by them is almost redundant.

So how similar is it to Visions and Destiny ? Do they still follow that repetitive fast/ballad/fast/ballad pattern ? Are the ballads still all about fulfilling your dreams and taking advantage of your youth and all that crap ? I think they need to tackle some new lyrical terrain if you catch my meaning.

Again, don't get me wrong.. I love Stratovarius, and if I had known they had a new album coming out I probably woulda preordered it, but since I didn't, I wouldn't mind hearing how it rates compared to the older ones.

DTC: The Cleveland show rocked ! I have to echo nearly every other jammer who's been to the shows when I say it's the best concert I've ever been to. Dunno if this has been mentioned, but did anyone else (at Cleveland or any other shows) catch the bit of Biaxident that Jordan threw into the mix ? I was hoping they'd break into Another Dimension, but I certainl ain't gonna complain about anything. :)

    Thanks !

    Drew

Damn, I scored on nearly all of those on that list of old school jammers. I didn't even realize I had been on that long until i read that list (I didn't attend a ytsecon and I don't own any clothing with arastar.com on it, but I was around when those happened. I do own an ax.com shirt, though). Shit, i guess it's been about, maybe 5 or 6 years now? I lost count after the servers started changing :). Oh yeah, I remember, I joined the list right about the time that the Subconscious bootleg was put out. About the Zappa bros. on Conan, I've got audio of it, and I remember seeing a clip on a show a few years ago or so (maybe not that long) of it, and yes, it was as funny as you can imagine (just seeing/hearing John Tesh playing "The Wizard" is a riot :).

First of all, to the guy who asked about having a nostril that was filled up (sorry, I searched for your message but couldn't find it buried among the 630 messages in my inbox):

I wouldn't worry about it at all. The only time you should be feeling ANY resonance in your nasal cavities (when singing "properly" :P) is when you're saying nasal consonants, such as n's or m's. Even then, if you only have one plugged up, it's nothing to worry about, as long as the cavity can be resonant at the same time. Any other time, that is when you have sound going, you should be feeling a resonance in your cheekbones or just next to your sinuses, but never IN your nose itself.

A good way to tell if you're doing it right (or in the right direction at least) is to close your nostrils with your fingers while you're singing. If the sound you're producing doesn't change in the slightest, you're probably heading in the right direction.

I guess I can't count as an old-school guy. Too bad. But I have to say that I'm proud to now be one of the most recognizable names on the jam. :) Maybe now Mike will recognize me by name - when I saw him last (the first time I met him) last May, he didn't recognize my name, but I'd only been on the jam for six months or so, and I didn't post with NEARLY the frequency that I do now.

It'd be neat if he knew who I was :) Especially when I tell him that Dave Hatlee (of MP.com webmaster fame) is going to be handing him a MIDI file of ACoS that I did as soon as I get it finished. Heh.

I just got the LiT video today (FINALLY!), and I must say that it is probably the better of the two videos, by FAR. I am supremely impressed with the quality of sound on this video, and I have to say that James's voice has definitely changed in the eight or so years since this video was released - he's DEFINITELY gone down in his range... His tone too.

And JESUS CHRIST, I never expected to see BREASTS on a Dream Theater video! Hahaha, that was hilarious, Kevin Moore signing some woman's breasts.

    /me rewinds the video...

Well, I guess we just have to disagree here. Personally, I don't find any one of them the least bit entertaining or funny. Neither do a vast majority of TV viewers either, judging by the fact that everytime one of them gets a show it gets horrible ratings and gets canceled within a month. Why networks think that people like them is beyond me, but if you get something entertaining out of them, then more power to ya cause I don't. -Mike C.

Personally, I like Risk. And Cryptic Writings for that matter. They don't go in any new directions or anything, but I think they have some cool congs and some cool guitar work on them (well, Cryptic Writings more than Risk). Although Risk is too short and I prefer their classic stuff. My favorite album by them is definitely Rust in Peace (in fact, it is one of my top 5 fav albums of all time). Peace Sells...But Who's Buying is also a great album, and So Far So Good So What is pretty good even though the production is shitty and it sounds half finished (I think they through that Anarky in the UK cover on there just so they wouldn't have to write another song). The first album is just a first album (nothing special) and Youthanasia and Countdown to Extinction are kinda lousy. Just thought I'd give my Megadeth opinions since a lot of people seem to be doing that. -Mike C.
