Portnoy likes Kiss? A jab at Derek? (other than the obvious one in the
    program...)

Echolyn's back. The 'jam is fun again. Am I missing something or is Satan

Well, he's not held up in high regard by all. I found him a bit verbose and
often just not funny. He was a bit like a SNL sketch: good for a chuckle
in the beginning, but didn't know how to wrap things up. Seems like a
    decent, intelligent guy, though.

It's really funny how Bahr has been ostracised. His posts I never enjoyed.
He loved to hear himself talk (or see himself type or whatever...) and the
gap between what he knew and what he THOUGHT he knew was about 1 A.U. He
had the coolest-ass band name, though. Anyoneremember that one? I wonder
if he still tries to make it out to a DT show, or if he's afraid to run into
anyone who he ripped off? He could always bring his big wrestling cousin
    with him. :P

    > do they still play "Rooster" right before they come on? if so what

Thank God they stopped that. I was conditioned to HATE that song, because
evey time I hear it I thnk, "Oh, shit. I have to wait ANOTHER 5 minutes to
    see DT?"

    Wow, that's funny, and yet...not. :(

    > You guys are sort of talking about two seperate things as per "TONE"

Yeah. I think it's TONE and TOUCH. touch makes you able the tell the
diference between Arthur Rubenstein playing the "Waldstein" sonata and Van
Cliburn playing the "Waldstein" sonata on the same Steinway "D."

I was a bit surprised to see so many people use the violin in the "tone
comes from the fingers" argument. A violinist need only get the idea from
his head through (among other things) his hand, the bow, the strings, the
bridge, the instrument, and the air to the listener. (NOT implying that
that is somehow an easy feat.) That may seem like a long path, but imagine
the electric guitarist! His head, his fingrs, the pick, the strings, the
air (magnetic field) around the strings, the wood of the guitar, the pickup,
the tone circuitry (if any), that LOOOOOOOOONG cable, preamp, umpteen
effects (all those patch cables!), the amplifier, the speakers, even more
stuff that I don't even know about 'cause I don't play guitar. :)

All that and STILL touch makes a bigger difference than equipment in the
sound! My mind tells me to say the other and I WISH I could believe that
equipment made a bigger difference - it just makes more sense to me,
logically - but it just isn't so.

Is consensus the be-all and end-all of all arguments? Certainly not!

Besides, "always been" is a logical fallacy in itself: "Racism has always
been around. Therefore it must be right." and don't tell me that I can't
compare popular singers with racism. I know that. :)

I was watching VH1 - Classic Rock last week and I managed to catch SIBLY. I
figured, well, DT plays it so I might as well check out the original. I
don't like it. I had to keep telling myself not to change the channel and
to listen with an open mind, it can't be that bad. It was excruciating to
not change the channel. If being a "bluesy" singer means just talk-singing
randomly over the accompaniment without a care for whether or not there is
music backing you, then Plant has it down perfectly. The band was fine.
Sloppy, but that's what most rock bands thing blues is about. I like DT's
version MUCH better. Much more intense (yet I think they take it a touch
    too fast).

I was going to go up and say, "hey remember me?" but then I thought what if

away, hanging my head in shame.

Not only do I keep wondering what the next tour is going to be like, I keep
wondering what the next album is going to be like! What the hell do you do
after this? I guess we'll have to wait until the new Fates Warning album

I'd definitely agree with LitS. for some of the same reasons and some
different ones. I don't think it calls to mind too much Floyd or Yes.
(Although if I had to pick a "classic" prog band that the complex stuff
called to mind, it'd be KANSAS!) The thing that makes DT DT is, I think,
the ability to write progressive music WITHOUT sounding like a throwback to
the 70's prog giants. DT's music sounds very modern. You can listen to it
and HEAR the up-to-the-minute technology. Add that to first-rate playing
and gut-wrenching emotion, and you have DT.

Why is UaGM "isn't"? surely someone may think so (I don't.) :)

I'd have to say Metropolis Pt.1 is the ultimate DT song. It has
everything, odd time signatures and changes, interesting riffs, uncanny
precision and accuracy, great DT lyrics, guitar, bass, keys solos, and
amazing vocals by James. Of course we can't forget that incredible middle
section where they're all just in the groove together. When I first heard
that song, it changed my view of music. Some of the things in there were
unlike anything I'd ever heard before. I think IAW, and specifically Met.
Pt.1 are when DT was at their best ever.

That's the thing. Concept albums can be really cool and amazing in terms of
presenting an entire story, or perhaps not even a story but just a common
theme. Just check out SFAM, Mindcrime, and the Wall as examples. However, as
much as the idea as a whole can inspire an album, they can also bog it down
at times IMO. Take SFAM for example. When I want to listen to it, it is a
great experience for me taking in the album as a whole. However, often (as
with all albums I own), I just may want to listen to one or two tracks. When
doing this, I can't help but feel something is slighlty lost. I don't get the
whole feel of the concept becasue I'm jsut listening to a portion of the
album. And also, the songs themselves can get bogged down (as was said in the
one quote above) by the concept as a whole. And as such, some musical ideas
(and even pehaps some lyrical ideas) can be prevented from reaching their
full potential IMO. On a non-concept album, I can listen to one or two tracks
which can easily stand by theselves becasue they are individual entities non
connected by a unifying concept. This also gives each song on that album its
own unique feel to it. It is very hard (if not impossible) to have a song on
a concept album be able to exist 100% completely on its own. Now, that being
said, on SFAM most songs do hld up on their own IMO, but generally not nearly
as much as on a non-concept album. Also, it is hard, as an artist, to have
great inspiration for every song on a concept album. There are some songs
which simply MUST exist in order to make the concept as a whole work. A band
is forced to make a song usong lyrical themes to fit the concept and might
not be as inpspired on that song as a result. I'm wondering why no bands (at
least that I know of) have attemted to make a sort of "mini-concept album" on
an othersise non-concept album. For example, why not just have 3 or 4 songs
on an album that have one story going for them together, while the rest of
the album is not part of the story. I always though it would interesting for
Queensryche to try this. Has been done before?? I only thing I can possibly
think that is close is on Extreme's 3 Sides to Every Story album, where the
final 2 songs are kinda one song as a whole but can also be listened to as
    individual songs.

Hmmmm.....I think I wuld go with Metropolis Pt.1. It has a couple of really
cool riffs, nice vocal melody, and a section in the middle which gets as prog
    as you can get.

I love this song but the verse sections are kind of different than a lot of
other DT songs IMO so I wouldn't pick this. I kinda wish they could play it
live on this tour but that goes for about 20 or 25 other DT songs as well! In
fact, I think I'm gonna go listen to that song right now. That solo always
    gets me going.

I can't say anything to this except that you're a fool. :) That's one of
the best tunes ever...if you think it's wrong for a singer to stray
from the backbeat, it's just more evidence of your pathetic snobbery. And
for the record, I can't stand DTs version of this song. They took a great
blues tune and made it absolutely soulless, and labrie's voice, though
he's one of my all-time faves, just is not suited for that kind of song.

Some of you been complaining about DT's setlist with Peruvian Skies and =

hearing Met. 2 played in its entirety every show. Personally, I think =

because I seriously doubt they're ever going to do it again on subsequent =

    2. So here's my ideal setlist for this current tour:

A Change of Seasons (in its entirety)
    A Mind Beside Itself trilogy
    Metropolis Part 1
    Metropolis Part 2

That's about the same amount of time they're playing with the current =

I myself think that Neil Peart is the greatest
drummer. Mike is good, but not as good as Neil. I
have the Rush tribute album, and Mike just can't
handle some of the parts and stuff, especially to La
Villa Strangiato. Fates Warning doing Closer to the
Heart is the best song on the tribute album. AS about
singers, I really like James voice on the new cd.
Many musicians change their sounds from cd to cd,
drummers change some parts of their playing and style,
why not singers? As about Phil Anselmo, from what I
have heard, Phil, a few years back, had so much weed
and almost OD, that he was considered clinically dead.
That is why his voice has suffered. I heard a new
song from them a couple nights ago, it is incredible,
it has a nice sound to it. As about Anthrax, I like
the Island years stuff without John Bush. The old
singer has a nice singing style, check out Persistence
of Time, great Anthrax cd. i wish that they would
still have their old lead guitarist they got rid of.
I like Geddy's voice. Many people hate his vocals
because it is a guy singing high, if it was a girl,
    then maybe they wouldn't mind.
I am a new jammer. I started a few weeks ago. I am
only 15. I found out good songs to get people that
listen to different styles of music other than prog
    rock, to listen to DT.

    METAL Metallica/Panter/Megadeth
caught in a web (gotta love this one)
    the mirror
lie (many people think this sounds like
    Metallica in some parts)
burning my soul (I love these lyrics)
    pull me under
    Metropolis Pt. 1
    Home
fortune in lies (probably my favorite song from DT)

    RAP
6:00 (another fav) (a have people that only
listen to rap like this song a lot)

    POP
    through her eyes
    hollow years
    take away my pain
    anna lee

Sure there are many bands that sound like others, some
of them identicals, but not DT. Of course they may
have some similar riffs or whatever that sound similar
to other songs, they still add their own flare and
version of it. If any of you have seen the Mike
Portnoy video, he talked about making charts. Every
section had a name of a song, riff, band, or anything
that they think of when they hear a certain riff. I
saw Metallica on there a couple of times and it was
the chart for dance of eternity. Whoever thinks that
song is crap, what the HELL are you thinking. That is
a great song. It has some great parts in it. I kind
of like Erotomania and Ytse Jam better. I hope that
DT plays YTSE JAM when they come to Dallas, that would
be great to see, I love that song. I wish I could see
them play the whole change of seasons to. The whole
thing of SFaM and aCofS, that would be all they need
to do and I would love it, maybe with A Fortune in
Lies thrown in after aCofS. I can't wait 'til the
show, that is if I can go. Always listen to Rush.
Oh, and whoever said they rather have 16 copies of
Rush's first album than any of the others, what is
wrong with you. I love hemispheres, moving pictures,
permanent waves, test for echo, and the new live one,
Different Stages, which is great, if you don't have
it, get it, it is fucking amazing.

    Lemme see, something like:

Moe: "Homer, you're no longer welcome in this establishment. Turn right
    around march out that exit!"
    Barney: "There's an exit? Buuuuuuuuuuurp"

Wait a minute. We can't agree on another music group, but do we all like

Favorite DT song: tie - Met 1 and Wait For Sleep/Learning to Live... And
then there's Scarred... And Space Die Vest... And Trial of Tears... Oh
crap, this is impossible!!! But I must say, OFB sure knows how to end an

I will agree that IF we can count the "A Mind Beside Itself" Triology,
that would be my pick for the definative song. Erotomania was the song
that got my hooked on Dream Theater, and it's still one of my favorites.
The orchestration and execution are beyond compare, and the fact it had
Kevin Moore is a plus in my book.

If we DON'T count the triology, seeing that it is really three songs
with intertwined themes, my pick goes to Metropolis. It's got a kick ass
intro, it moves from heavy to light, it has an awesome (not to mention
long) bridge and soaring vocals for those of you who appreciate James'
ability to wail (personally, I like him a LOT more on FII/SFaM.

    "Oh Boy........
If we can consider it one song, my vote would lie with "A Mind
    Beside
Itself". Erotomania is about as fun an instrumental as it gets,
    including
bits of other works of theirs. Voices/The Silent Man make a pair
    marvelous
works, great tunes with thoughtful lyrics."

I agree 100%!!! Eroromania has got to be the greatest instrumental of all
time, and Voices and The Silent Man thrown in make for their best IMHO!!!

I'll make it quick, definite DT songs, to me anyway
begin with ytse jam, Pull me under the obvious classic
and the mirror from awake is one of the best pieces of
music I think I've ever heard. I adore trial of tears
as well great composition. Anyways, Classic Simpsons
moment, Bart hands out Hymms to the congregation with
a devilish look on his face. Cut to reverend Lovejoy,
who leads the congregation in singing "In the garden
of eden" By "I. Ron Butterfly" and it only took him 17
odd minutes to figure out that rock and roll had found
    it's way into gods house

Dammit, I am determined to meet more than Mike on this tour. I am going to

    best place?

    Thanks,

    >Where'd yall go to meet the band afterwards? I didn't know where to go...

Dude, you must have run off too soon, because all 5 of them eventually came
right out front and met with fans(as they almost always do), and Steve Morse,
Rod M. and Mr. Goodman of the Dregs also stopped to chat for a few. Not bad
at all considering it was a chilly night, and most(if not all) family members
of OFB were in attendance, or at least in town.

This in from the Detritus e-zine (http://detritus.web.com):

-Armored Saint's John Bush (vocals) and Joey Vera (bass) are doing an
AOL chat at 8:00 PM EST on March 8, keyword Rock Chat. Their comeback
album REVELATION is due the day before via Metal Blade. A special 2-CD
version is also in the works, but there are conflicting reports as to
what it will contain; some say disc #2 will be a lengthy CD-ROM video
bio, and others say there will be the video plus music, which may or
may not consist of the song "No Me Digas" (which already appears on
the regular version of the album) and material from their ancient s/t
EP. And remember when the band asked fans to submit ideas for a set
list? Their ArmoredSaint.com Webmaster just sent out a message saying
over 6,000 fans wrote in! All the votes haven't been counted yet, but
so far "Can U Deliver" is the #1 most requested song.

Also of note for Midnight fans, in the zine...
-In an interview with ex-Atheist vocalist Kelly Schaefer,
Metal-Rules.com stumbled upon this little nugget: ex-Atheist guitarist
Rand Burkey is working with ex-Crimson Glory vocalist Midnight! Read
    the interview at http://www.metal-rules.com/ .
