I'd vote for Take the Time. Particularly when you consider that is one the
most frequently played live songs, not to mention (ususally) the most

Aiight, Guess its time for me to throw my name into the hat. Seen lots of posts on the DC show, so here's mine.
Well started off by running a little late getting to Cafe Nema for the Jammer pre-show get together. Food was good, a lot of foreign foods, and it took forever for them to make them. Had about 10 people there which was cool, but was expecting a few more. I would like to say thanx for a wonderful time to all the ppl who came out before hand. So we left there about 6:45 figuring we'd get a decent spot in line.....
-=*WRONG*=-
I was about as wrong as can be! The line already spanned two full blocks and wrapped around another one! Needless to say I greatly underestimated DC's fan base. The show was sold out too which was really cool.
So we finally get in and Bill's indecision causes him to go up the stairs, down the stairs and can't decide where he wants to stand. So finally we decide on upstairs just as the show is begining. We squeeze as close to the rail as we can, unfortunatly I, having the worst luck in the world, have the person in front of me switch with a 7 foot tall mullethead. Needless to say I was rather pissed. I could see OK, but my gf was having major problems. She finally asked him to turn to the side so we could squeeze in and he said "No way sweetheart." Well needless to say, you don't say that to "Wild" Bill's gf, he decided to turn to the side and grab a beer when Bill decided to wedge his way in between mullet for brains and his good buddy Ryan (thanx for puttin up with me Ryan!). So I'm turned sideways, squished between the two when the show starts. Needless to say the Star People weren't worth the effort. The Dregs were very cool and Mullet for Brains decided to try a switcheroo with his buddy. Instead I pulled my gf in and we stole his spot. Fuck, for DT, I would've kicked the guy in the nuts and dumped him over the rail to be able to see. So we had good seats for the concert.
DT was solid as ever. What can I say really? SFAM was unbelievable as far as musicianship, just to be picky, they fucked up the visuals during Fatal Tragedy. When the James sings "Without love, without truth" etc. the lyrics on the screen read "Without faith, without hope" and visa versa. The visuals up to the end of Strange Dejavu and from Jordan's solo to the end were cool. The rest were pretty blah as they looked like a bad psychodelic screen saver. I thoroughly enjoyed SFAM and agree with anyone who says it was kind of anti climatic to not end on it. I don't know how the fuck they did it to be perfectly honest with you, I got tired standing there and fighting mullethead, I can't imagine playing all that time! The choice of songs for the medley was cool, although LtL would've been cool or a return of The Killing Hand instead of Peruvian Skies. If they played PS, it should have at least been the medley version. All in all, second best concert I've ever been too next to Rush's T4E tour and edging Satch's Crystal Planet tour off my number 2 slot.
Post show: stole a Queensryche poster and my friend stole two SFAM posters off the wall. They would've just thrown em out anyways =). Finally met up with some more jammers who added great post show flavor. Shoutouts to Bafu, Kez, Coldie, guy from Division (shoot me I can't remember your name hehe) and everyone else who was there. Decided not to hang out for the band cause we were all tired and figured it would be a while before they came out. So as my taxi was turning the corner, I saw the band. *Sigh* Went home and had sex to compensate. All in all, a great night.

<< Anyhow, NEW TOPIC ALERT. I was wondering on what people's opinions are on this: what song would you consider to be the DEFINITIVE - *not* the best - Dream Theater song? My vote goes to "Lines In The Sand". It has the progressive lyrics, the mad vocals, it's long with echoes of Yes (the complex stuff) and Floyd (lyrics over same chord progressions, but with different embellishments to build suspense, and a slow mid-section), and it has a heart-melting solo. What more could you ask for? It embraces just about every facet of DT's ouvre, but I'm sure that someone disagrees. Wow! I thought I was the only one whose favorite DT song is "Lines in the Sand". It really lets every member of the band show his virtuosity without getting bogged down in self-indulgence. Great lyrics too.

I forgot all about that one! That's my all time favorite - the closest I've ever come to peeing my pants since I was 4. Here's some more:
Lionel Hutz: I will like to talk to you about bringing legal action to the fiend who did this to your boy. Homer: Well the fiend who did this to my boy is my boss. Besides, the doctor says it's just a bump on the head and a broken toe, nothing serious. Hutz: Pfft. Doctors. Doctors are idiots! There is no telling what type of permanent injuries he might have. You might have to wait on him hand and foot for the rest of his natural life. That's the down side. Now here is the good part. You can ching ching ching cash in on this tragedy. Homer: Wow.
How about the one where Homer joins the cult...
Cult Leader: Take this object, but beware, it carries a terrible curse. Homer: Ooh, that's bad. Leader: But it comes with a free Frogurt! Homer: That's good. Leader: The Frogurt is also cursed. Homer: That's bad. Leader: But you get you choice of toppings. Homer: That's good! Leader: The toppings contain Potassium Benzoate. Homer: <pause> Leader: That's bad. Homer: Can I go now?
Homer: My baloney has a first name, it's H-O-M-E-R, My baloney has a second name, it's H-O-M-E-R...
Besides the mp3's I have that I guess used to be rare (purple rain, solar groove, red hill mining town, and others) I only own I&W and SFaM, so my scope is somewhat limited, but for the quntessential DT song, I'm gonna shrug and say UAGM. That's the song that really turned me on to them, and prog in general. Hearing a friend of mine play that perfectly through his full-stack (that was cranked up and only four feet away) was quite an experience and got me started on my quest for musical enlightenment. No longer would I subject myself to the mindless pubescent dribble spewed forth by MTV and her loyal, yet equally brain-dead FM-band offspring.
I have the option of seeing one of two Satriani shows - Fri 4/28 in NYC at the Hammerstein Ballroom, and Sat 4/29 in Philly at the Electric Factory. Has anybody ever been to both of these venues? if so, which one is better? I'm guess the Hammerstein Ballroom is, since I've heard of it on several occasions, but going to that show would mean skipping the last day of school before finals, so I'm more inclined to go to the Philly show. Any recommendations?
-Dan.
P.S. Does anybody know how the jam determines when to send out a new jam? I'm just curious, because some days I'll get one, but today I think I got four. I'm guessing it has to do with how many posts it receives??? ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! During a recent cold-medicine induced stupor, I careened on over to www.grammy.com just to reaffirm my fears of who I thought would win the awards.
And my fears were realized.
Is anybody else about ready to gag at the extent to which the entire music industry is whoring themselves to Carlos Santana? I mean, What the hell? Not even during my delusional alterna-weeny days when I thought Mike McCready of Pearl Jam was God's gift to musicians have I ever once even been mildly impressed by anything that this guy has put out. I took a Music Appreciation class last semester, and our textbook is apparently also used at Juliard. For some reason (I think political correctness - he focused on alot of no-name female composers, too), the author was practically orgasmic when writing about Santana and the effect he's had on popular / latin music and latin culture. NEWSFLASH PEOPLE! "Black Magic Woman" SUCKS!!!! I mean, hell, I can't improvise a solo worth crap, but other than the fact that it sounds "latin", his recorded stuff ain't a whole lot more ingenius than my pathetic, repetetive, bedroom noodlings.

Although my favorite DT song is "Lines in the Sand" I think DT's definitive sound lies within Scarred. To me, AMBI is three songs. I've always seen it that way. :P A Change of Seasons is just too damn long even for a Dream Theater song, so I don't consider it "definitive."
Scarred, to me, has everything in it a DT fan can relate to. Killer vocals, jazzy parts, balls and chunk, one of the most inspired solos by John P., a keyboard solo, a keyboard/guitar duet solo, that killer string section outro, the Wheel of Fortune theme song... Everything a DT fan could love.
It just seems funny to me that Scarred always seems to be the one song most DT fans forget... Maybe that's because it never was put on the cassette version of Awake, I dunno. hehehehe. -- KorgX3... The one that you love... Asking for another day... NP: Dream Theater - Scarred.mp3

That's why I dig Home, because it shares a lot of similarities with Scarred. By far the best song performed live from SFaM this tour.

Well Im not sure how much of a hand he had in it, but you'll notice in the credits the vocals were recorded seperately at Nothing Studios. From what Ive heard Trent sat it in at most of their sessions to help them with the equipment and give them some ideas. I think it was mostly likely his influence that got Phil grunting, gurgling and groaning all over the place (which for some reason I find cool). BTW. Does anyone else think there is a big NIN influence on Burning My Soul? Ive heard John Petrucci was a fan during this era.

Yer course not, thats not what I said. What I said was that when you claimed that everybody MUST cringe at listening to Plant whining on Sibly, you were being silly. Sure SOME people cringe but a greater majority find it a great musical experience.

Very true! I think thats why I like Dark Side of the Moon so much. Being only 40 minutes its much easier to listen to the whole album without falling asleep (not from boredom but because the majority of my music listening is done at night with headphones), and also its songs can be seperated and still make sense. Other good albums like this are A Pleasant Shade of Grey (50 minutes but you can skip the acoustic song), Aenima (super long but songs easily seperable), and Selling England by the Pound (short when I skip Battle for Epping forest- yer i know it was supposed to be funny, but i was like negative 6 years old when it was written and i dont think the humour makes it way over all those years from England to Australia).

I really like DTs version and I think its one of Labries better performace, but it does, in the end, sound like a cover band paying homage to their idols.

I belive for two examples of this, look at The Dark Saga and Something Wicked This Way Comes, both by Iced Earth. The last few songs on these two albums are a story. I hope this helps.
Also, got back from New Jersey recently after seeing Dream Theater perform in Seabright. This was my first Dream Theater concert and I was amazed. James sounded great to me, as did the rest of the band. I could even hear John Myung in the mix. The club had a great atmosphere, very small, and I was able to stand second row center for the show. I can't wait to hear them here in New Orleans. The only disappointment was that all they played was SFAM and the medeley, no full songs, or encores even. I think people were fooled into believing that the medeley was the encore.
The Dixie Dregs were also awesome, even though some hardcore metalheads in the crowd were overheard saying that they sucked. What would have been the best would have been to see Morse and Petrucci jam together or some Rudess/Morgenstein project played. I guess that was just wishful thinking. The highlights besides the show were getting to hear the Transatlantic album in its entirety (this album is going to rule!) and getting pics and autographs with all of Dream Theater and Steve Morse, and also an autograph from Jerry Goodman. It was too bad the rest of the Dregs had taken off. In a nutshell, best show I have seen ever, plus the best opening act I had ever seen.
Later, Kevin

I would love this too! But the amount of time thing would be assuming that they took no breaks whatsever at all. Also, playing a 23 minute song, a 10 minute song and then a 77 minute album in its entirety would just kill them I think! Thats a hell of a lot to ask of them. It WOULD be incredible though. -Mike C.

If I remember correctly, once the jam gets 900 lines of text (it used to be 600), it sends out a digest. I would assume that if the jam had 899 lines of text, and it got sent another message, it would send off the jam with 899 lines and save the next message for the next digest.
If I'm incorrect somebody can correct me. :)
On an unrelated topic... I seem to have some kind of odd effect on the jam, because the last two topics I've posted about (although the second was rather indirectly - it stemmed from a quote in my sig) have turned into full-fledged huge threads. I thought it was kinda funny when I actually realized it. Maybe it's something to do with the moon. :)

My favorite Simpsons moment (please note that I was never a regular watcher).... The family is pulling up to a stop in the car and Homer hits a deer statue, snapping it off the pedestal.
Homer: D'oh! Marge: A deer! Lisa: A FEMALE deer!
As for the Atlanta show, generally the buses and support trucks will be parked on the left side of the venue in the parking lot as you face the front entrance from outside. There will be a taped/roped-off area, but if the band is inclined to come over, autographs are fairly easy to obtain. I've done that with several bands, most recently Type O Negative and Incubus (and might do it again this Sunday).
[ Al B. and Half-Naked ] I remember when I first met you, Al, across that highway from the FantaSeeya! Diner in that shopping center. "Your band is Half-Naked?" "Yea." <pointing outside at the 10-ft snowplowed drifts in the parking lot> "Okay. We're waiting....." hehe
GodDAMN that was a fun roadtrip.

Somehow, I lost the plot and posted favorite tune(s) instead of definitive... Methinks its time for another quote - "D'oh!!!"
Somehow, my choices still stand...

Definitely Metropolis Part I. It has everything I like about this band.
Provided you don't think it's UAGM (it isn't) or ACoS (which I'm not counting for obvious reasons), let us all know what you think. >
LITS has jazzy piano stuff, which is quite untypical for DT. So IMO, it's a bad choice (and I *love* the song!).
