Yes, definitely heavily influenced by the blues. That doesn't mean they're
a blues band. Calling Zep a blues band on the strength of their first
couple of albums is like calling Rush a Led Zeppelin clone because of their
first album. Yes, they were influenced by the blues (like every rock band
is to some extent), but listen to their shows and albums later than the
early 70s. Definitely a rock outfit (Kashmir, Song Remains the Same, No
Quarter, Stairway?). Tons of distortion, fast power chords, not-so-bluesy
lyrics. In their middle to later years they didn't write too much stuff
like SIBLY or Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, I don't believe.

Someone asked whether bands had had a few songs on an
album to tell a story and the rest had nothing to do
with the story, the awnser is yes. besides the concept
stories from rush testament had that going on with the
new order album and they are probably countless others
I can't think of at the moment. Also bravo to Elton
john for his critisism of the grammies. He's right,
who's to say whats really the best? all I know is
whats best for me and that is represented in my cd
collection. He also hit the nail on the head again
with video's and what bullshit they are. It doesn't
make music any better having a video to explain whats
going on, it just takes the fun away from figuring it
out for yourself! and besides who would want to spend
$100,000 to make a video just to have eMpTy V not show
it! anyway thats my oppinion and I'm shuttin up now

Nope I think DT's covers are brilliant, highlighted by the 'Uncovered'
boot, they do a killer version of UK's 'In The Dead Of Night', as well
as a set full of great cover's.

I couldn't agree more. The Prokofiev 3rd concerto is one of the best,
and most difficult, piano concertos out there. It actually premiered in my
home town of Chicago in 1921 and the people were amazed. Of all of the
concertos I've seen performed live, no one has dared that one. It is truly
for the masters ONLY. Prokofiev was deffinitely and innovator in the piano
world and I'm so glad to hear that there are people on this jam that are into
such different types of music. Today I was doing my music homework in the
ccommons building at school and I saw a boy in a DT SFaM tour shirts. He sat
down at my table and I brought up DT and started talking about the concerts I
saw and asking him about his. He took one look at the piano score I had in
front of me, sneered, and told me that it is fans like me who ruin prog rock.
He said that DT wasn't for people like me, but for "true" rock fans.
Whatever. That was my first experience with having someone else critique my
musical opinions and tastes and it was not pleasant. I told him where he
could put his "true prog rock fan" status and that was that. It's great to
know that some of you listen to different genres of music and for all of you
who love the progressiveness of DT and othe similar bands, check out some
romantic and classical composers. I don't guarantee you'll like them all,
but, at least for me, some of them are as easy to get into as DT. If you
truly appreciate the musicianship of DT members, I don't understand how you
could not be impressed by an entire orchestra playing at breakneck speed with
complete precision. Both types of music amaze me.

I am fairly curious about the new Vai legacy from carvin. Have any
jammers played with one. I am aware that it got great reviews, but I am
very hesitant to purchase anything that I haven't played, and there aren't
any carvin dealers in either of the states I reside in. Right now I have a
modular amp with an effects rig, but I just am not satisfied with the sound,
I can get a decent tone, but there is just something that irks me, I can't
quite put my finger on it.
What about carvin guitars? Anybody have any thoughts. They SEEM good,
but without ever even seeing one in real life it is hard to buy into what
    carvin is saying.
Plus can anybody recommend a good effects rig that doesn't cost too
much? Mine is getting really old.

With my old rig, I was VERY satisfied and impressed by my Rocktron
Intellifex LTD 1-space unit. This thing had PRISTINE reverbs, choruses,
delays, pitch-shifting, EVERYTHING. I was contstantly amazed by the fact
that I got such a great unit for $250 used (I could help you find one for
this price EASILY)! It is very, very easy to use and integrate into an
    existing MIDI-controlled system.

When I was using the Intellifex, I was using an ESP LTD MH-300 and a Fender
American Standard Strat through Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier, through the
Rocktron (in the FX loop of the Recto), into a Red Bear 2x12 cab with
Vintage 30's, with fantastic results. I used a Lake Butler MIDI Mitigator
pedal to control everything, with a Rocktron MIDI Octopus to channel-switch
the Dual Recto via MIDI commands.

If money is an issue, I'd go for this Rocktron. If you can afford an
effects unit that runs about $1000, I'd go for the Lexicon MPX1-G2 (my
personal favorite effects unit). Both are great (the Lexicon is obviously a
little better, but, IMHO, not $750 better)...

Now, I just have two high-end Yamaha guitars, a Line 6 AX2-212 (which takes
care of everything - amp modeling, effects, cab simulation, etc.), a BOSS
TU-2 stage tuner, and a Morley Bad Horsie wah. And my back absolutely LOVES
    me for it.

    Hope this helps,

behold! I noticed they had 2 magna carta releases. Imagine that : someone
actually buying these CD's and then selling them back. Must have been
starving or something. anyway, the Cd's were:

    -Royal Hunt: Double live
-ELP tribute: Encores, legends and paradoxes

The ELP tribute was pretty cheap too, but I'm yet undecided. Is it any good?
I'm sure it will still be there when I go back to buy it :-)

Hey man.... I have a Trem-o-verb head by mesa/boobie, and it rocks, great
distorion... anywhere from clean to ballsy dirty....

I think you should lookinto a lexicon effects unit, or alesis, i have a n old
quadraverb from 88, and it still kicks....

I think carvin guitars are shitty.. i don't like the waythey look, and the have
a way fat neck...too fat in my opinion.

what rig do you currently have?

In general, I'm not too impressed with their covers; SIBLY and Red Hill
Mining Town are both awful to me. But they do have some gems, in
particular their version of Perfect Strangers, which I think whoops all
over the original, and I am a Purple fan (anyone who likes them pick up
Live at the California Jam, awesome set).

You wouldn't be happy with the results.

But I thought I'd put the article on the Internet just in case some of you
might want to see it, because the others on the board did say some quite
interesting and even some humorous things about it.

You can find the review by going through my page (it's in the sig), or you

LOL that "review" is so fucking funny... You gotta see some of these
    select quotes...

Now I know how they got their name. Dream Theater put me to sleep
faster than a bottle of NyWuil could

    The keyboardist must be an
eight-year old toying with his brand new Yamaha
    keyboard that has all
                              the cool sounds (yee-haw).

My advice: Stay away from this if you know whats good for you

Yet I know youre all waiting for us to review some good
music and we will eventually. Until then, enjoy
    a nap with Dream Theater

hahaha this was so refreshing to read..

Well, Dreamscape does that on their "Very" album.

The three last songs make a trilogy called "Panterei".

Please tell me more. How is ACOS one song, while SFAM is several? Because I
can understand them being several songs put together, and I can understand
them being one very long song each. But I don't get how ACOS can be any
different from SFAM in this matter.

Hm, and am I correct in assuming you call these people
friends? That girl Brooke is exactly what is wrong
with music fans these days; she got told a few times
that she wouldn't like the CD, so she didn't even
bother to review it. My advice to you would've been
to not give anyone any warning. As for accusing DT of
sounding like Third Eye Blind, where the fuck where
3EB back in '86 when DT got together? DT's sound
hasn't changed radically since then (and yet it has in
many ways), but I can't picture someone legitimately
accusing DT of being a copycat of 3EB. Maybe some
elements of Metallica (if you're stretching... A LOT),
maybe some Yes (with a minimal amount of stretching,
and some others. I'm shocked. Shocked.

I thought that was a particularly clever song, seeing as in met1 he was
blinded by a paradise and in sfam they reveal that he was a drinker and a
    compulsive gambler.. very fitting...

I thought that Mike's lyrics in Burning My Soul were
pretty damn good. Kevin wrote same great lyrics too.
Myung has some cool ones too. I don't like James
lyrics that much, Mike's are better, but John's are
the best ones. As in regards to most definitive song,
I would think that Learning to Live, Another Hand-The
Killing Hand, and Scarred would be some good ones.
One that I like is Just Let me Breathe and I would
also say Peruvian Skies. My favorites right now would
have to be A Fortune in Lies, Lie, and Home. Home my
also be a good song to be definitive of DT.
On another note, I am kind of pissed that Rush
didn't make the Hall of Fame last year. I think that
they are probably the most influential band ever.
One of my friends is big into Floyd, and I told
her that DT did some covers from them. She didn't
think that Dt could pull any of them off. I sure as
hell think that they did, as a matter of fact, they
destroyed them. I thought that the Damage Inc. cover
on the 5years video was pretty good. I am glad that
they had Metropolis pt1 on there, but I wish they
would have played the thorugh to the end of it. I
also wish they played the whole Learning to Live.
Rust in Peace is a great Megadeth cd. I am
listening to it right now. I am glad to see that most
people here like the same bands, while they like DT.
I see more of a Rush influence in Rush than any other
band. As for instance, trial of tears, doesn't the
intro remind you of Xanadu. Enough said here. Catch
    you all later.
