Just got back fromn the Phiily show and man was it GREAT. As someone already
said, the visuals were kind of disappointing- mostly just words on the
screen!) but hell I came for the music anyway. I am just so amazed at the
energy those guys have to do the whole SFAM for an hour and a half. It's just
amazing. The show was quite packed too. I saw Megadeth at the same place back
in November and there were probably about 40 or maybe even 50% more people at
the DT show. This is pretty amazing considering a Megadeth CD sells about 4
or 5 times what a DT CD sells. This just goes to show the dedication of the
DT fans to me. WOW, can't wait til the next tour already!

I supose it kind of is, but it's not definitve enough for me to be considered
as such. I just always saw it as 3 songs that are very slightly linked
    together. But that's just MO.

These people need to figure out that DT isn't hard rock, heavy metal, or
metal. It is PROGRESSIVE. Which is its own little genre.

This has to my favorite part-

"I think my biggest problems with Dream Theater are the vocals and the
    synthesizers."

The synthesizer is pretty much what makes them progressive.

    or it is this-

"The keyboardist must be an eight-year old toying with his brand new Yamaha
keyboard that has all the cool sounds (yee-haw)."

This keyboardist just happens to be one of the best of our time.

"Yet I know you're all waiting for us to review some good music and we will
eventually. Until then, enjoy a nap with Dream Theater."

You did review some good music. You just couldn't pull your head out of
your ass long enough to notice.

    have a nice day,

    ~!The Silent Man!~

    Hey JAMMERS
My name is Billy & this is my first time posting on the JAM. Now I
don't want to get started on the wrong foot, but in response to comments
made by james McCullugh (item 2 on isue 5347)While I totaly agree with
you ( and Sir Elton) about the grammys I would offer this suggestion in
    reference to music videos
First, most videos have nothing to do with the song such as videos
with live footage & studio outtakes. Soyou see there no interpretation
    to ruin.
Secondly, videos offer fans a chance to see there heroes i action
which is cool when you live in "jerkwater" USA, and can't get out to see
    the show.
Finally who cares if eMpTyV plays your video or not (Lord knows
we don't want to interrupt "theReal World" videos area cool addition to
    the home videos(heck out DT's
    "Live in Tokyo"
Also while I'm here I noticed a few items about albums with
epic or trilogy type concept songs seperate from the rest of the album.
here ar a few that cme to my mind.
Fates Warning's NO Exit album. The second half is called The Ivory Gate
of Dreams. I'm sure it would put those school newspaper "reviewers" to
    sleep as well.
Manowar's The Triumph of Steel album begins with The Agony and Ecstacy
of Achilles; in 8 pts. sadly it's the only good part of the album.
and Yngwe Malmsteen's Trilogy album has (you guessed it ) a Trilogy
called just that. Check these out if the opportunity arises
                                 So long for now.PEACE!!

                                                             Billy.

    > didn't give it a second thought.

In such cases the only workable act of chivalry is this - place yourself
directly behind the offender and sing all the lyrics at high volume directly
into the back of his head. He may not move or acknowledge you, but rest
assured, he can hear you just fine and you're ruining his experience. It's
such a tidy little package. You get to have fun and sing along with the band,
plus the people around you (including the band) won't hear you because the
offender's head will absorb most of your noise. In that sense it's kind of
like being inside your very own studio.

If the offender turns around and says anything to you, you can just shrug and
say "shit happens." Then you can lick the back of his head and go, "Oops!
Someone pushed me while I was singing! Sayyy...nice shampoo..."

    > she had a very shrill singing voice, which she used to full effect by
    > screeching the words out at the top of her lungs for the entire show

Sing harmony to her screeching. Harmonize poorly. Blame her.

    > and she had her fist in the air the whole time, and she was pumping it
    > throughout each song (even the slow songs, it seemed)...now, normally this
    > might not be too bad, except for 2 factors: 1) she really didn't seem to
    > care if there was anyone around her that she might inadvertantly hit, and
    > 2) i happened to be standing right behind the 'flailing arm of destruction'

Get behind her. Smack her pumping fist in mid-air with your knuckles, then
immediately grab your forehead with both hands and shout "OW! FUCK!" When she
turns around, glare straight at her and shout, "YOU FUCKING HIT ME!! RIGHT IN
MY EYE!! JESUS CHRIST!!" If you can't get behind her, pretend to get shoved
by someone else and ram your body into hers as her fist flies through the
air. If you've got a strong skull, head-butt her fist, and if she notices
pretend it hurts like hell. If it doesn't hurt at all, head-butt her fist
several times, each time acting as if it hurts more and more.

    > ...i ended up keeping my face down for the first part of DT's set, because i
    > didn't want a black eye and/or damage to my teeth...

If you can manage to bite her fist in mid-air and make it look like an
accident, you are a wiser man than I.

    > eventually, i stepped back a bit so she could slide in front of me so i
    > wouldn't be directly behind 'the arm' anymore...little did i realize that i
    > would then have to deal with her 6-foot, 225-pound male friend who was
    > doing the same fist-pumping that she was...

Unless you possess the fabled "glow" as seen in "The Last Dragon," you have
    no options.

    > this girl was also very belligerent and almost got into a fight or two,
    > because she really didn't care about anyone but herself, and she also
    > didn't care who she pissed off...i don't think i've ever been that happy
    > and relieved to see a DT show end!

Dude, that sucks. You need to go in a hit-squad with a plan of action to take
down troublemakers. Guns work great, but shooting scares the band, especially
    Myung.

Long ago I was at a show at Daytona's with Brian Keys (aka Kezcom). At one
point a really muscular guy appeared from out of nowhere and started shoving
people around in an attempt to get closer to the stage. While I was several
feet from Brian, and had a good spot to see the show from, Brian got stuck
right behind the bulldozer troublemaker and spent about five minutes
defending a small woman from getting crushed.

The security guards quickly noticed the crowd activity centered around this
troublemaker, but when they showed up to "eject" someone they couldn't figure
out who was the source of the problem. To make matters worse, the
troublemaker immediately pointed at BRIAN. He actually accused Brian of
shoving the small woman. Brian put up his hands and began nodding his head
back and forth. I couldn't believe what was going on.

Sometimes it pays to be inarticulate, so instead of introducing myself to the
security guards as a "third party witness" I went over and stepped in front
of the troublemaker and put a finger in his face, "You're gonna get your
ASS!! KICKED!! if you don't CALM!! DOWN!!" Then I went back to my spot
several feet away. Security figured it out pretty quickly. If someone you
know is getting shoved around and security shows up and needs to make a
judgment call, address the troublemaker directly and make sure security can
see and hear you, they'll put 2 and 2 together. Pretend not to know the
people you're with and your influence will skyrocket.

The review sucked and if you havn't already checked it out, don't do it.
They obviously didn't give the album a chance, and didn't know much at all
about the band. Nearly ever comement made was based on false, or uneducated
assumptions. They did suceed at forming my opinion on one thing though,
them. Some pretty random things were said,
ie: "The keyboardist must be and eight-year old toying with his brand new
    Yamaha keyboard..."
The only civil explanation I can make for this kind of ignorance is
they simply weren't listening. If they were, I would seriously look into
    their credentials as critics.

To whoever asked about Santana, I don't think he ever writes the lyrics. He just
writes (and plays) the guitar parts. And yes Smooth could have been played by
anyone, but you shouldnt base your judgements on the man from one song.

    >Also out of curiousity, everyone knows that Led Zeppelin IS NOT A BLUES
    >BAND, right? Definitely a rock band, and this song just happens to have a
    >"bluesy" feel to it.
True, but remember rock and roll is basically a combination of various styles
that includes blues, country, jazz etc.

    > nothing prevents you from listening to only, say, Carpe Diem (well, the CD
    > layout makes it a bit tedious to search to the right position in the track),

Yer, and they do break it up often when playing it live.

    > played ad nauseum, I am just sick to death of them at this point of my life
    > and wouldn't mind if they weren't played on the radio for the next 5 years.
    > After all, how often can ya listen to Whole Lotta Love and Rock and Roll?!
    > Give em a rest now I say.

heh. I think zep is a funny band because a lot of the people who were around
when they came out hate them because they got to see what a big dickhead plant
was and heard the stuff on the radio a billion stuff... where as kids (like me)
love them because we don't have all those prejudices (although I am starting
to get sick of stairway to heaven).

    >up. Footsteps is one of my personal fav Pearl Jam Songs. The single also has
    >Yellow Ledbetter on it. Sorry for the rambling here at the end!

Hmm, thats actually one of my least fav PJam songs, but thats probably just a sign
of how good they are. But yes Yellow Ledbetter is an awsome song.

    >..of the few people to actually LIKE UAGM ?!? Is this true ? Don't you guys
    >(and gals) like listening to this song ?

    >I like the song!

Me too! I remember the first time I heard DT after buying Images and Words.
I didnt much like Pull Me Under or Metropolis. I found TTT kind of funny,
especially all those samples. My fav song at the time was UAGM because
I liked it when james goes "Outside the soundness of your mind". I couldnt
work out what he meant by soundness until I looked it up in the dictionary.

All I can say is one word WOW!!!! I have seen DT about 9 times already and this BY FAR was their best show. Jordan Kicks Dereks ass! James was dead on, almost reminded me of the Images and Words tour. The band was tighter then a vigin. Also Kudos to the sound guys because their mix and over all sound was awesome. The venue was a complete sell out (I asked the lady when I left) so there must have been 3-4 thousand people there. The lighting and stage effects were phenom. All and all an awesome show, my ears are still ringing and I look forward to seeing them again soon!!! Later

Oh, come on... =) That was a complete enigma to me for a long time, but eventually cracking it was a great feeling. Wouldn't wanna take that feeling away from you.

Same thing goes for NP, though that one was a lot easier.

The problem is that "blinded by a paradise" is from ACOS. =) Oh, never mind.
