It is now 7:10 AM, and I am just getting up for a full day of DT-absorbing. It's about a 1.5-2 hour drive to Boston from here in lovely Plymouth, NH, and I'm going to get an early start so I can be at Daddy's and the Roxy waaaay early.

Anybody who's looking for other jammers, look for me: I will be dressed pretty normally, probably in jeans and a black polo shirt (I haven't picked it out yet), but the easiest way to figure out who the hell I am is that I'm going to be with three other guys, two of which have red hair (one of those has a goatee, the other a very long five o' clock shadow) and another guy with dark hair.

To figure out what the hell *I* look like, go here: http://cout.dhs.org/newpic/me.jpg. It's a pretty good pic of me, but it's a few years old, so all you have to do to figure out what I look like now is put a goatee on that picture. Come up to me in Daddy's or at the show and say hi, because I'm interested in meeting as many people as possible!

mostly self-taught composition here.... now if we could just get playing down. ;)

Russia and eastern Europe seem to have turned out some of the most interestng composers from the past century. My most recent purchase in the classical vein was Stravinsky 'Firebird' / Scriabin 'Prometheus'.

This was spurred by seeing Fantasia 2000 at the IMAX in Indy. Disney finally did something right (In U's NVHO)and cut out the Tim Rice and PC BS from one of their films. Excellent music and visuals ('Firebird' is downright chilling) .

and probably my (D) absolute favorite; the only MIDI I have out on the net (probably still floating around) is a prog version of Concerto in A Minor.

I first became interested in Milla Jovovich because of her album, "The Divine Comedy." Then I saw "The Fifth Element." Then I started noticing her on magazine covers as a fashion model. While I still think she's a better musician than actress, according to you I should like her most (or only) for her modeling because that's her primary activity. Who's to say which facet of the Backstreet Boys is "supposed to be" the most appealing or primary?

It happened to me something similar yesterday, when I saw Yes playin' live here in Barcelona, Spain. But this was a man of about 30 years old I had behind, who didn't stop screaming and shouting like a madman. It was very, *very* irritating, he didn't stop even in the quiet parts as well, as in the beginnig of "Awaken". He spoiled part of the great show it was... :-(

    Greetings fellow Jamsters,

Go ahead, call me a snob.. But I think we are the enlightened ones. Most people never listen deeply enough to grasp the depth of a well written song. I don't believe they make the connection between a well written lyrics and the emotional reflections of a skilled musician. When you ask the average person what emotion a particular song invokes, they look at you like you're retarded.

I was just listening to "Candlelight Fantasia" by Symphony X. The guitar alone can bring tears to your eyes... Not the mention the haunting lyrics sung by a very skilled vocalist that sounds like he's one step away from slashing his wrists. That song is so powerful. I could be at my own surprise birthday party with 100 other people and feel lonely and empty inside with just one listen. I like that! Any song than can project that much emotion has my attention. Unfortunately, very few songs fall into that category.

I just don't understand how some people can get all warm and fuzzy over lyrics alone. Particularly when the singer/musician is more concerned with how cool he looks rather than focusing on making MUSIC. On the other hand, I hate it even more when a truly great song is ignored by the masses simply because most people like simple catchy tunes to rotate torsos by... DANCING: A vertical expression of horizontal desires.

Let's get these people laid so we can teach them about good music!

Don't get me wrong Digital Man, I'm not flaming you at all. I just want to set the record straight. You can blame on not having the best time you ever could at a DT show on some teens, or you can just accept the fact that Dream Theater's fan base is increasing from the original WDADU and Images and Words followers-- and hey all people enjoy the shows differently. Move to another part of the crowd and I'm sure you would have seen a 30 year old smokin a joint (albeit no paraphernalia) with his annoying wife yelling "I cant see anything" or "I want to hear Lie!!" with just the same shreikiness as this 15 year old you talk of. So you can blame your troubles on some people just trying to have a good time or just see that the younger following of DT is the future of DT and progressive music. It seems strange that for the time I've been on the jam, i've heard people say that DT needs more radio airplay and one of their videos on MTV, but hey when I hear comments like this it makes me wonder if some people don't want DT to have a bigger fanbase. But me saying this is being the same hypocrite as the Digital Man-- I can't judge every DT fan on the action or ramblings of one. It's just troubling to hear comments like this. Geez, I wish they played more all age shows-- I would have gone to the LTE show at the Bowery and the DT show in Boston today.

Oh, one more thing-- "OK, first up was the Star People. They'd actually be OK if it weren't for the three assholes at the front of the stage. " No wonder DT never caught on like Metallica or Britney Spears for that matter-- so many close minded people just like Digital Man who would say that "They'd actually be Ok if there wasn't that asshole man-who-thinks-he's-a-woman singer on stage. Man this band is so 80's." I've heard people say this-- and they just don't give it a chance.

This is probably a bad idea to post this but we teens need to speak out.

I agree with a lot of you when you say that one person's music tastes are no better than anothers. However I do think that when it comes to a group like BSB that is where I draw the line. First of all it is manufactured. Second, they sing to a beat box, the music requires little to no talent to play. Third, their voices go through a computer before they go through the speakers. They could sing whatever the hell note they like and it will come out perfectly in key. On the subject of people just liking them because the look good. I don't know why DT doesn't get more attention that way. Those guys are pretty hot ;) I guess they're just not attractive to teenage kids.

Of course, that could explain the shoddiness of the material, but I would have to respect the fact that they wrote their own material. Also, their voices really are pretty decent from what I've heard, but that could be due to pitch shifters or really intensive singing lessons. Also, if they can sing well, why don't they try out some more intense material or stuff that is harder to perform. Maybe this is because they do lack integrity and can't really break away from what the music company wants them to do. Of course, groups like these have existed since the beginning of the music industry as there have always been teen idols. I believe this industry is what is wrong with music today. Music is supposed to be a fine art, not a business, but I digress. Also, someone had said that classical composers wrote for themselves. Some did, but a friend of mine told me that Mozart was the "pop" music of his day, and he had women all over him just like those boy "bands" of today. In the end of this I say, we must just tolerate the BSB, and maybe respect their singing. Do we really care if a bunch of 15 year old girls become DT fans? The thing I love about DT is that they are not huge, the fact that they can play an intimate small venue and take the time after shows to sign autographs and talk with their fans. I bet this never happens at a BSB concert unless you have a backstage pass. Popular music is just a phenomenon that most of us, including me, may never understand.

On a somewhat related note (to add more DT material to this post), I had been looking through the grammy nominees a few weeks ago and noticed this under Song of the Year. Livin' La Vida Loca (some person and DESMOND CHILD). It's the link between DT and Ricky Martin, well actually this was probably the fault of the record company, as they forced DT to use Desmond Child in co-writing a song. Just thought everyone would get a good laugh out of this. Plus, remember, DT used him before he worked for Ricky "fake latin music" Martin. Man, seeing people like Ricky Martin, makes me realize that the popular music machine has infiltrated almost every style of music out there. I can almost see it now, Popular Progressive, its almost as oxymoronical as Mainstream Alternative, but hey that became a reality.

    Let's keep our music!

oh yeah, that's a great idea. don't let younger fans see the band they love. why would you want to keep anybody from supporting the band? i had some high school kids next to me, they stepped right out of revenge of the nerds. they were extremely annoying. but they had every right to be there. i just stuck my elbow into their side everytime they pissed me off. but it didn't stop me from enjoying the show.

and good luck finding a rock concert without people screaming and smoking pot.

Well, a lot of them will SAY that they love the music and they're really talented and what not, but you're right. The reason they buy the music is cause they think they're hot. At least, IMO, but it certainly seems that way. -Mike C.

When Mike and Rod go to the music stores, are they holding a clinic or just signing stuff. The reason why I ask is because I was at the Mars Music in Atlanta and asked two different people that worked there the same question and they gave me a different answer. One told me it was a clinic sponsored by Sabian and that they would answer questions, etc., etc.. If they had time, they would then sign stuff. Another guy said it was just an autograph signing. I want them to sign a drumhead and wanted to make sure that I'm cool if I bring it? What were the other appearences like? Thanks alot.

    James.

ps. 3 days and counting!! :-)

<< * Kevin never took a keyboard solo. And the only things that were ever close didn't have a sequenced rhythm track. I don't like that gay carnival-music break in TDOE to begin with, but to turn it into a 5 minute keyboard wank fest absolutely ruined it for me. Jordan's more technically impressive than just about any keyboardist I've ever seen (and I knew I felt that way seeing RMP open for DT 4 years ago), but there's a time and a place, you know? >>

Well, I think this was just to give the other guys a break. Its gotta be really draining to do that whole album live so the only chance for a break they can get is with that keyboard solo, so I looked at it in that perspective. Sure, Jordan gets no break, but hell, he's the new guy! lol -Mike C,
