who is this band everybody here is talking about and
quoting - The Simpsons? Are they progressive? Perhaps
they are a bit like the Smashing Pumpkins, because they
seem to have a woman called Marge play with them. Is the
singer possibly gay - he is, after all, called Homo (or
something like that)? And what are Granny awards? Some
kind of gold medal for outstanding services as a baby
sitter? And while I'm asking questions, how am I meant
to pronounce the name of a cover band that calls itself
DtVsLdZep? Something like Vauxdvihl?

About Andrew's school paper review.: I don't have any problem with people
not liking OFB or their latest offering, it's not for everyone, but... I was
disappointed in the format and content of the reviews from an editorial
point of view. Isn't the purpose of writing for a school paper to gain some
journalistic experience? Isn't there instruction provided by someone (like a
professor) to guide the students work? What I read (other than Andrew's
review, which at least gave us information and a qualifier as to his
objectivity) was a totally unorganized group of random thoughts by people
who couldn't convey any sense of their point of view or credibility to take
on the task. These peoples opinions of the album are meaningless but what
was sad was that they GAVE nothing and TOOK nothing from the experience of
doing the review (especially Brooke who couldn't be bothered to even listen
but still managed to take up editorial space-amazing).
A suggestion (which could be applied to reviews posted to this list, as
well)-- Provide a listing of your favorite bands so that others can tell
where you're coming from when you say "it sucks" or it's great." Withouit a
frame of reference these opinions are meaningless. Another way that
reviewers give us insight into their point of view is by including
references to other pieces of music and their reactions to them. At least
Heath told us to save our money for the Sex Pistols which provided some
qualification to his prior statements! End of rant, back to your regularly
scheduled jam.

Hello all,
I got the new DTIFC mag a month ago, and I must say it's great! The articles, together with the teriffic photos, are really
informative and well written. It's format and glossy print quality is very similar to those magazines that are on sale in various neon-lit outlets for the discerning adult in Amsterdam (err...so I've been told...). I was half expecting to see various blue-dots plastered all over the band *ahem* members. Steffan, do you use the same printers??
Well, I met up with Charlie Farrell (UK Jammer) last Friday for the PL gig. And much thanks to him for holding the spare ticket for me - Cheers! I've never got around to buying Host, and despite the concert being very enjoyable - I'm still yet to be convinced of the style change. The old ones are the best :)

My God, my God, what can I say?
It was my first ever DT show, and my friends and I went to the signing an
hour early only to find that there were already about 150 people ahead of
us waiting. As the time passed, the line probably grew to 600 people! We
met this neat guy named Ari (not on the jam yet) and struck up some nice
conversation. Probably the funniest part about waiting in this line was
the guy across the street in the dorm at Berklee who spun his speakers out
the window and started BLASTING Britney Spears' "Hit Me, Baby" out the
window. We all (naturally) started booing him, so in response he put the
OiaLT version of Lines in the Sand on. That was cool.
Then the representatives came out and told us that because so many people
were out there that each person would only be allowed one thing to get
signed. I nearly lost it then because I'd brought three CDs I would've
liked to have gotten signed. Oh well, there could be worse things. Like:
They came out a little later and told us that JP wasn't going to be there,
because he was SICK. I got REALLY scared at that point, but they said
that yes, there would still be a show that night, but that he didn't want
to risk getting other people sick by shaking hands and interacting too
closely. I suppose I can understand that.
At that point Ari told us that he was going to go wait in line at the Roxy
and that we could cut in with him when we got there. We thought that was
cool, and that he was a really cool guy, but I didn't even come CLOSE to
realizing how cool until we got there. We went and got something to eat
and then headed over to the venue.
Ari was one of the first twenty people in line - I could not believe it!
When the doors finally opened about an hour and a half later, we all
rushed in and my friends and I ended up front row, right in front of where
Jordan would be sitting.
The Dregs' set was incredible - I've never really heard much of their
stuff, but I am definitely going to check them out now. Steve Morse was
definitely at the top of his game that night. There was some kind of
energy in the crowd that I think really translated into the performers.
When DT came on and the video started playing, the crowd went absolutely
bonkers. I was getting pushed up against the makeshift fence they had for
the entire show (not that I minded much).
The DT set was beyond words. I couldn't even begin to explain what I felt
when I saw this show. They were playing at top form and I must say that
Through Her Eyes and The Spirit Carries On both made me weep due to the
fact that they were so full of emotion. Seeing this album played live is
such a great idea.
Down sides to the show:
- At the end of Finally Free, when the video was supposed to come on,
something blew. The video never did come on, and technicians started
mobbing the stage resetting Jordan's gear and such. Mike came on stage and
said, "I guess you're all wondering what happened to Nicholas?" At that
point James took over the mic and said, "Sorry people, we're experiencing
technical difficulties. You're not gonna see the video for that tonight."
That really sucked.
- I didn't meet any jammers. Did meet a couple of people from MP.com,
though.
High points to the show:
- Seeing the video screens after Jordan's solo saying "Jordan is available
for parties and weddings." I nearly lost my shit when I saw that I
laughed so hard.
- The little improvisations that the band did to add to the album
- Hearing JP play Amazing Grace at the beginning of Through Her Eyes.
Talk about emotional playing! I've never heard ANYTHING like that, and I
had previously thought that Hourglass was the most emotional thing he'd
ever played.
- Getting a TON of pictures. I got 15 pictures of DT and a few of the
Dregs as well. I hope that they come out, because I'll post them. Since
I was right in the front row I got some AMAZING shots, including one of
Mike pointing and looking right at me so I could get a snapshot of him.
What a cool guy. ;)

I asked James at the signing about the vocal stuff we were discussing
earlier on the jam. When I asked him about his passaggio, he told me that
he has sung as high as a G in his passaggio, and that his falsetto can go
even higher. I don't know how much I believe that (at least the way he
told me), because it sounded like he wasn't talking about "the" passaggio,
but rather the "mix" that a singer gets when going from his passaggio to
his head voice.

Yes, I said that. I personally don't like Mozart because I think his music
is a little too simple. I cited Bach, Beethoven and Schubert as examples.
I don't disagree that there were composers who wrote for the public, I was
just saying that it is easier to find examples of "music" in the classical
realm than "opium for the masses."

Bach and Haydn, and the majority of composers from the Seventeenth/
Eighteenth Century were completely dependent upon sponsors, i.e. Graf
Esterhazy for Josef Haydn. Thus all the music they wrote was for the
entertainment of the court. Even the salon music of the Nineteenth Century
by Liszt and Chopin was for the gentry rather than the unwashd rabble. And
they sometimes didn't know when they'd have their next meal. They were
still dependent on the public liking what they wrote to get a square meal.

That's not fair to the young'n's in our cause celebre and those who do
appreciate DT who aren't. At the DC show, I'd bet 1/3 came for the Dregs,
most of them in the 35+, and 1/2 of those who came for DT were under
21. It's all good. I just don't understand the talkers in the back. Ah
well. Went to see Yo La Tengo Friday night and they had chairs on the
floor in front of the stage. Nice to sit, especially front row stage left,
but it tended to lead to more talking over the band. And since they're
rather mellow, it was noticeable.

Christmas CD. Very nice package, haven't even looked at the computer related

I just joined the DTIFC recently, so this is my first fanzine and my first
Christmas CD. I know I can't get the other Christmas CDs through the fan
club, but is there any way I could send someone on this list a few blank
CD-Rs (3-for-1) and have the other Christmas CDs burned for me? If

Somebody recently mentioned taking away all-ages shows, and being someone
that can only get into all ages shows, i'd like to comment on that. I think
that's possibly the worst idea ever. If anything, the older people ruin it
for the younger ones. I'm 16, and i was at the milwaukee show, and talk about
some freakishly rude people there. This one old, ugly, fat man decided he had
the right to push me completely behind him because he's older and he deserved
it more (not only that, but i've never smelled a fouler smelling man in my
life). And like someone else on this list said, just cause we're young,
doesn't mean we don't pay to get in and wait in line. Plus, we're freaking
short, if anything we should all be complaining about "that guy" that's 6'8"
with frizzy hair (come on, you ALL gotta know that guy). Just thought someone
should speak up for the ytsejuniors.

The only hand signal I saw Mike give was to the fire marshall after he shutdown
the concert in LA.
After thinking about for a couple of weeks, although I'm still pissed at the
venue/promoter greed that caused the early shutdown, the way the crowd
reacted--by taking over the vocals as the PA wnet down and generally be very
cool, was an experience that almost made it worth it.

That's because you're being a dick. If you don't stop being such a fucking
bananahead Napster will compress you into radial, wafer-like shapes composed
of a starchy material somewhat resemblant of pancake batter. Boy.
Really, I have some troubles with Napster, and some successes. I think it
mostly depends on who you try to download from. It's always best to make
sure you're downloading from a guy with a T1 line or similar. Downloading
from a 56k user isn't going to get you anywhere, snapperhead. :)
And in other news, did anyone here about Bafu stealing the DT bus? I guess
James is pissed because the Baf-ster smoked all of his pot. Seriously,
though. One of DT's busses was stolen at one of the shows (I believe it was
Cleaveland, heh). Pretty weird shit.

i've been using napster for about 6 months now. it tends to be slower than a regular server. i think that is mainly because it isn't a server. like you get mp3's right off of other people's computers and they just go "through" the napster server. some people say they have a T1 connection when they only have a modem . so their bandwidth is very small. there are a lot of good songs out there. and it sucks when you get half of one and it quits downloading.

Honestly, I have NO idea why people can't figure it out on their own. I've reached the conclusion to never underestimate human stupidity, seeing as they recieve the directions when they subscribe in the first place. But, rather than having the Jam bombarded with repeated requests from people wanting to unsub, I've been firing off a form e-mail to anyone wanting to know how it's done. I give them the exact URL of the YsteJam page of UAGM for directions. Maybe it's working... I haven't seen one of the people I've sent the e-mails to post a second request to the Jam. Yeah, it's a pain in the ass to send one out, but it sure beats reading all of these threats to sue, and the such. What can I say... I'm just trying to do my part to make the Jam a happy and safe place for all. ;-)

Yeah, mine does that too. At least I feel a little better knowing it's not just my copy. But I have the same attitude you do... I would have been PISSED if it cut off in "Dream With Me" or "Full Moon", but yeah WTSR? is on Episode, so I don't mind as much. Kinda weird how it does that though... I've never seen it happen before on any CD I've gotten.

Isn't this, by just a little brain work, a clear proof of what music industry stands for, a clear proof that GARBAGE is the thing that sells out? And most irritating, if general folks who bash us and listen to this fashion music see this, don't they feel just a little stupid or cheated???

I agree with you. Fortunately, I never had a problem getting into DT shows. When they played around here when I was under 21, it was usually at The Strand, which was almost always all ages, and now, it's no big deal, since I've turned 21. Honestly, I think that with a lot of the dates on this tour being sold out, if DT brings along 2 relatively well known opening acts on the next tour (this summer?) they should be able to play theaters, which are usually all ages. I'd love to see them come to the Orpheum, or Berklee Performance center next time in Boston.

Well, for what it's worth, let me second the recommendation for this band. I have the CD and it's really, really good. It starts off with some Pantera style riffing, and just when you think that some maniac is going to start yelling, it switches gears and jumps into prog metal mode. The disc does this sort of thing a lot. DT is an obvious influence, though occasionally the disc gets very heavy. The vocalist is good, and the songs are well constructed. I picked this as the "best debut CD for 1999" and suggest if you like this sort of stuff that you pick it up too.
I'll write a full review for my dopey site if this flu I have ever goes away (two weeks and counting...).

You'll be lucky to get $10 for that, Bahr's CD's are worthless these days. Plus it isn't a true soundboard, his true source was a real audio broadcast from the internet.

The violin player with The Dregs is Jerry Goodman (I've seen a few people not know his name, so I thought I'd mention it). Goodman recorded some awesome CDs on the Private Music label in the '80's. I'm 99% they're all out of print now, so if you ever spot one in a used bin somewhere, buy it! Personally, if anyone comes across any of the studio ones and ends up not wanting them, let me know, as the only one I currently have is the live one. Which I could also use another copy of, since it has a chip out of the edge from getting squashed in a car accident many years ago.
All Age Shows - Stupidity knows no age boundary. Instead of limiting age at shows, they should be limited by IQ tests. Question - "Are you going to attempt to start a mosh pit during a ballad?" Pot-addled concert goer - "You bet, Dude!" (sound of concert goer being struck by heavy metallic blunt object). "Next!"
There's a time and a place for everything. I expect mosh pits at Slayer shows. I don't expect them at prog shows. You can enjoy the show without making yourself a nuisance to those around you. Of course, since most of the population lacks things like basic courtesy, I suppose I'm ranting for no reason. I still don't get people that go to shows and then yammer like mental patients the whole time the band is playing. Is it not far cheaper to stay at home for the yammerfest, as opposed to spending $30 to get in and then making sure that everyone around here's about your fascinating life of shoe shopping?
And I'm all for playing at more places with seats. Thankfully there was a balcony area for the LA DT show. After lurking around NAMM all day, I doubt that Kim and I would have really felt like standing all night. And DT seems to be filling out the places they're playing. Which is actually kind of impressive. The band is selling out shows with just about zero promotion.
The exciting world of "commercial" music - I personally don't give a rat's ass what kind of music people listen to. Backstreet Boys kick your ass? Knock yourself out! It is sort of pathetic that these acts are all about marketing and not about talent, but the Top 40 has been dominated by acts like this almost since its inception, and will continue to do so.
What pisses me off about the music industry (well, one of many things, anyway), is the fact that the outlets for music are so limited these days. It used to be that pretty much every market in the US had at least one "rock" station, if not more than one. I grew up in Harrisburg, PA (not exactly a thriving metropolis) and we had two FM rock stations. These stations played a variety of music within their "rock" playlist. Sure, you'd hear the standard stuff (Zeppelin, Stones), but they'd also expand the format a bit with some prog (Yes, ELP) and occasionally some fusion stuff. As time went on, more metal bands got on the air. If you wanted to hear this kind of music, you could. If you didn't, well, there were plenty of other stations to choose from. Hell, we even had a Jazz station in Harrisburg.
Not anymore. Most major markets are lucky to have one "rock" station now. Unless I'm wrong, LA (the #2 market in the US) doesn't have one. There's "alternative" and "classic rock", but no station where you're going to hear a band like DT (or about a billion other bands I could name). If you like this sort of music now, you're forced to either have an extensive CD collection, or rely on MP3s/internet radio to hear new bands. These changes all came about after the laws regarding the number of radio stations that could be owned by any individual/corporation were relaxed. Radio is dominated by a very small number of companies now, and they market research their playlists to death. The odds of your radio station playing a local band (something that used to be quite common) are slim now. The odds of a radio station not pandering to the masses, playing pretty much the same thing as the station a few notches over on the dial are slim now.
I refuse to believe that there isn't a market for more types of music than what the radio/other mainstream media would lead you to believe. OK, sure, I don't expect to hear Spock's Beard on Top 40 radio ever, but I refuse to believe that there isn't a much larger audience out there for this type of music than what is currently being served. And I refuse to believe that you couldn't actually make money by serving up a more "rock" oriented format, especially in a larger market. Various musical formats used to thrive on the radio, and I still think they could now. Instead of slicing that audience of Top 40 listeners into ever smaller pieces, wouldn't it make sense to instead program your station to pick up an audience that is not being served at all? Perhaps I am delusional after all...
