    Back on the jam!

After the jam daemon ate the list, I decided to stay unsubbed 'til after I
saw the Boston show so as not to ruin any surprises...Now I have a
    question:

Can anyone who went to any show on the M2 tour mail me privately tell me
what was supposed to happen at he end of the SFAM segment of the show?
Suffice to say there was a "malfunction" of sorts and all present were
    left without a resolution... I don't want to go into specifics b/c I don't
want to ruin the show for those who haven't seen it.

    Thanks,

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids....

For those of you on the list who're heading to the Atlanta show, look for
me, a dude with reddish-brown hair and goatee, and a gray Ytseradio
T-shirt, which should stand out pretty well since nobody else in the area
has one. Come and say hi :)

I'll also be at the in-store at MARS Music, so say hi there as well.

Well, I was at Bohager's as well; had a great time and I'll give you all a
    run-down.

Bohager's seemed like an interesting-themed nightclub, but not the best
concert venue. It was a tiki-bar-under-a-tent. Steve Morse referred to it
as a giant "airplane hangar," which might be an appropriate description.
Lots of space to screw up the acoustics, but not that much *usable* space
for people to stand and see. True, it was far superior to Daytona's, but
    that's not saying much.

Dregs took the stage at 8:00, and once again they rocked. They were really,
really LOUD and I felt stupid for not bringing earplugs.

Dream Theater came on at 9:30ish, and played for a little bit under two
hours. Same set as usual (same as the DC show), but I swear it was about 15
minutes less. A lot of the show sounded about 10 bpm faster than usual!
Musicianship was perfect, of course. The music didn't seem nearly as loud
as the Dregs -- but it was still more than loud enough to be heard. Well,
you couldn't hear Jordan, and some of the time you couldn't hear James
either. Portnoy and Petrucci were high in the mix; no one else really was.
I just figured it was a problem with the acoustics, or the soundboard guy.

After the show, I talked to a guy from Silver Spring who had been backstage.
He said Jordan's keyboard tech was fuming. Apparently after the Dregs set
(before DT took the stage), the cops came and made them turn off the PA!! I
don't know any of the specifics (I didn't think to ask the band when I was
by the bus), but it obviously screwed over Jordan. During the times you
could hear James, it sounded like he was coming from the PA speakers. Maybe
the cops just made 'em turn it down or something? Either way, it screwed
with the mix and didn't sound real great.

After the show, I also ran into DT's video tech -- the guy responsible for
all the video screens at the show. He asked what the people on the Ytsejam
thoguht of the video screens, but I said it really wasn't talked about that
much. He said that he was hoping people were talking about 'em --
    POSITIVELY, of course :)

His personal story was really cool, though. It didn't sound like he was
normally a professional in this field at all. He couldn't have been much
older than me (20) and apparently he had just moved to NYC a few weeks ago.
He was doing some work for Jordan at his home studio, and was invited to go
meet the band during a rehearsal. He went along, and while they were
rehearsing, he started screwing around on the computer, creating some video
and stuff. The band thought it was really cool, and next thing you know,
he's the video tech on tour!!

Anyway, thanks to Cary and Dan for giving me a ride from DC; Ytsejammers
rock :) I missed seeing any other Ytsejammers; I'm sure I'll see some of
you again on the next tour.

    Ryan

The big problem that I have with napster is that you can't limit the number
of files that people can download from you at the same time. My comp gets
REALLY slow if i've got more than two transfers going at once, and since
I've got all the cool mp3's =^), I usually get more than that.

On another note (an eleventh note?), to all the bluegrass fans that
responded to me, check out a CD/Band called 'strength in numbers'. Jerry
Douglas, Edgar Meyer, Mark O'connor, Sam Bush and Bela Fleck, playing the
epitome of prog bluegrass. Sick, sick stuff.

i've been using napster for about 6 months now. it tends to be slower than
a regular server. i think that is mainly because it isn't a server. like
you get mp3's right off of other people's computers and they just go
"through" the napster server. some people say they have a T1 connection
when they only have a modem . so their bandwidth is very small.
there are a lot of good songs out there. and it sucks when you get half of
    one and it quits downloading.

    Hey Jammers,
Yeah, the baltimore show at Bohagers last night was awesome. Although, I
think the show last monday night in DC was a little better sound wise. At
Bohagers, you couldn't really hear John M that much, and Mike's kick drums
weren't as prevelent as I'd like them to be. Anybody know what was wrong
with John M's bass at the start of the set? Did anybody else pick up that
John M was playing his signature fretted bass on Peruvian Skies as opposed to
his standard fretless? Did anybody else pick up on John P's little mistake
at the beginning of BTL? It's good to know that even masters of their
instruments mess up too. Now I don't have the urge to burn my bass when I
    play.

What? Oh please.. I know a particular seventeen year old female that
would swing her hips to the sound of a doorbell if the asshole pushing
the button did it in a repetitive and rhythmic fashion. This same female
can't stand music that uses real instruments. She prefers drum machines

Now don't all twisted on me.. I am quite aware that there are MANY

Yes, butt, that's your whole problem. I thought I'd be Mr. k3wL m0j0 and supply all of my MP3's to Napster, but within 5 or 10 minutes I already had about 15 people leeching off of my 56k conn. My recommendation: If you don't have DSL, T1, or similar, don't supply MP3's. I just turn off uploads from my machine unless someone specifically asks me for something.

When I had those 2000 mp3's up there, though, it was pretty cool to see who was downloading what. Mostly, it seemed like people were wanting my Bruce Dickinson and Iron Maiden ones. :) I thought that was pretty cool. :) -- KorgX3 sometimes feels a nut. Sometimes he is. NP: Pantera - Heresy.mp3

Interesting. With all of the recent talk about "rude behavior" at shows, you're telling us you took "cuts" at the front of the line? That's usually considered pretty rude behavior. Did you and your friends ask the 100/300/600(?) people in line if it was ok if you cut in at the front?

I just have a question. How could the "shitheads" (I like this term) not know. I thought it was clear to even the most retarded monkeys and other lower forms of life that these bands were manufactured. First come BdoorBoys and then right up their asses come N'Stynk with 98degrees following closely behind. It SHOULD seem from the sheer explosion of these bands in recent years that they are just cashing in. Ignorant people deserve no sympathy IMO, they have the resources available to learn the truth but do not take advantage of them. If they don't have the resources, that is a different story. I don't feel anything toward these fans or "shitheads" if you prefer the politically correct term, but apathy and a very mild annoyance when they insist on playing their "music" loud enough for me to hear. Just my $.02.

Well, the Boston show has come and gone and whatta ride! Sarah, Mike B, and I arrived at the Daddy's downtown at about 1:30, just in time to stand only about a half a block back in line. The signing was pretty cool, but very assembly lineish, what do you expect with about 300 or so people waiting in line? About 8 of us or so grabbed some lunch, and we went to stand in line about 5:30, an hour before doors opened. Thanks to some very friendly Canadians (thanks Greg and Helen!!), we didn't go ALL the way back in line, but we were only about 150 feet back. At it's longest extent, the line was about a block and a half long, as far as I understood it. They let us all it at about 6:30, and we got in about right away. The Roxy has a pretty cool setup, with a balcony running all around the venue, so we made a beeline right to the balcony on stage left, and Sarah and I grabbed two tables and sat down right at the railing. We had a great view of everything but the Images, but I wasn't too worried, I'd seen them all on Wednesday. I couldn't see Mike really, from where I was, but I wasn't interested in that, I wanted a view of Jordan, and I could see pretty much everything he did, from where I was sitting. I've seen him and Rod Morgenstein about 5 times over the past 4 years, but I wanted to get a good look at how he does what he does.

The Dregs started about 20 minutes late, at 7:50 or so. They played for about 50 minutes, or so. I don't know track names, so I can't give a set list, but they played extremely well. I'm not sure who is more of a monster behind the drums, Mike or Rod, because Rod was banging on those suckers like Animal! He was hitting everything dead on, and it sounded AWESOME!

DT started a roughly 9 ish or so, probably close to ten after. They played the usual set list, Scenes to Peruvian Skies (and the Dr Evil interlude) to the Erotomania/Paradigm Shift Medley, to the When Images and Words Unite Medley.

    Some cool things:

Amazing Grace before Through Her Eyes (thanks Sarah for noticing!) The keyboard solo in Dance of Eternity! I was wondering if he was really that fast and fluid and that accurate before last night...guess what, he IS! The Kurzweil supports so many different things, it was interesting how many different ways that Jordan could do the same thing. During Beyond This Life he managed to fit in the pitch wheel, the slide strip, and varying key pressures to sustain notes...all in the same song. Not much to be impressed about, but I'm a fan of many different tools for the asme job (like Linux), and it's fun to see a master at work! The medley is cool. I like the little snippets of everything, It's a refreshing change in some ways...and they make it mesh together very well! The not so good things:

Hmm. Not many. Time to start finding larger venues, I think. It sure seems like OFB is really starting to pack them in there.

It was great to see all of the people I haven't seen for a long time at the show, some of you I saw, but you didn't stop by after the show! A shout out to: Mike, Mark "hold the Mayo" Metzger, Kevin "Look out for that" Hammer, Jeff "The Silent Man" Falk, Tarkus, Wacky, Binky, Skadz, Bogie, The Canadians (Greg "The La Villa Strangiato Guy", and Helen), Ed "The No-Ticket Whiner" Wilk, Sully, Chad Farrow, Layne, Matt "Look out for the next Event album" Scurfield, Colleen "just one more year", Robert, Dean and everyone else I forgot, and everyone that Sarah forgot that I forgot.

Passaggio means "passage." It is the turning point in a singer's voice where they shift from chest to head voice. It is usually around a 4th. Mine is around A to D above middle C. Kind of low, even for a baritone. I can't sing for shit though.

If anyone has bootlegs (digital source only), please contact me. I have 2 so far: 11/11/99 Zwolle, NL and 11/??/99 Paris France.

Also, if you taped any of these shows, and need a conversion to CD-R, remastering, retracking, any of the sort, I'd be happy to do that as well.

Ahem, now all this is fine except 1 point. Congratulations for him if he really is doing this for 15 years. Not easy at all. But the years were not what made him a star. I think he just bumped onto some producer who saw he can make money of him and told him the "secret" formula of success. And Ricky transformed accoring it and making it big time. I dunno his stuff much, but one of the latest hits was this ballad stuff. The way I see it, the song it so lame and boring, nothing special at all. My conclusion is - The boy got famous, he's The Star, with his pop music, and now it's time to make a heart-breaking ballad. It's like a cliche, after 3 "groundbreaking" pop/dance hits you just gotta make a ballad too. That's what the teenage girls want man, their sexy music idol sings pointing at them, kneeling in a mud in a middle of a rain storm, desparately reaching out his hand toward them (in his newest video clip).

And finally the "his goal to bring latin music to the masses" part. I think this is not true. I must admit I liked him when he started. The Latin vibe was there, it was great, even though it was poppish. That famous Latin magic that makes your hair stand straight up was there.

Stupid decision IMHO was the Living LaVida Locca song (or something like that :) that moved away from that style, being a typical disco rhythm song. There's nothing Latin in it.

Also, the thing is this (Latin stuff) is not his work, I see him as a copycat in a way. One name folks - Gloria Estefan. Play early Ricky stuff and Gloria together and you'll see no difference at all. So he's not ground-breaker for introducing Latin music to the world. It's been done already, way before. Ah yes, another name pops now, Mr. Santana. :) Damn the Grammies for, in a way, hummiliated the man with this winning joke, but the man is a guitar hero. And that's a fact. :)

OK, I don't think you guys realize what fucking hypocrites you are. You ALL do something or tolerate something that another person is going to consider 'inadequate.' I don't give a shit what it is. Granted, I think >most< people here take music very seriously. Obviously, many of us take it to extreme steps where we become snobbish. You guys sound just like the rich assholes who scoff at the idea of using a 'common man's' toilet when they have their solid-gold, jewel-encrusted throne to shit on at home.

I'm surpsrised at how many of you people could still continue to watch Pro 'wrestling' after making such accusations. Pro Wrestling is completely manufactured and fake, no? Oh, but is that different? Maybe those guys who really get the shit knocked out ot them in the UFC look at you like an idiot for watching the fake shit?

You know, to certain extents, I agree with you. I don't like to see talent take a backseat to commerce any more than anyone else, but music is music, yet I am willing to accept that not everyone likes 'talent.' Maybe some of you had it ingrained from birth that music is the 'be all, end all' in the world. I guess, like many religious people, you would be extremely closed-minded to anything other than what you were taught to believe.

I came across 'talent' by a completely different route. I used to be one of those "shitheads" that listened to the radio 24/7. Many of my friends happen to be one of those "shitheads" that listens to the radio 24/7. You just can't accept that they seriously don't like stuff like Dream Theater when they hear it. It's not all because of biases or mainstream propaganda or subliminal messages in their Limp Bizkit CD's telling them not to like it. They >just don't fucking like it.< If you choose your friends and family by what kind of music they listen to, I seriously feel sorry for you.

Music is music. If you refuse to listen to a piece of music because it wasn't written by the performer or because the performer is "manufactured," that's your loss. It was less than a year ago I felt the same way you do, and I can't believe what an ignorant bastard I was. Regardless of whether or not the manufacturer was singled out on Star Search or whatever, he/she has talent. Maybe not talent up to your pretentious par, but talent nonetheless.

    > Ignorant people deserve no sympathy IMO, they have the resources >available to learn the truth but do not take advantage of them.

I guess it depends on which form of ignorance you mean. People who continuously burn themselves on a hot stove because they're too stupid draw a conclusion, probably not. People who don't obtain the equivalent of a Master's Degree in Forensic Orthodontics even though all the information they need is at the local library? Some people just have better things to do. Please, don't let me stop you! Maybe if someone killed you because of the clothes you wear or were calling you names because you grabbed the last pack of Hillshire Farms sausage in the supermarket, I could consider them "ignorant." I think, though, maybe you should check yourself before you start calling people who disagree with your opinions ignorant, hmmm? -- KorgX3 thinks musical snobbishness draws many parallels with racism.
