I heard some folks in my little, podunk town talking about a high school
teacher that was supposedly once the drummer for Rush. Now, I know that Neil
Peart was the big drummer man for a while, but I'm not as knowledgable about
my Rush history as I am about my DT. Anyone happen to know if there could be
any truth to this? All I know is that the kids call him Mr. Sanders. Ring
any bells?

Several of you have expressed interest in helping me out with my little
ACoS project. Here is information on how you can record a MIDI file into
a wav, encode it, and get it to me.
First of all, you have to be able to record it. Anybody with a Sound
Blaster Live, and perhaps some other models of SB, should have a utility
called Creative Wave Editor or something like that, that came with your
sound card's software. If you don't have it installed on your system,
check the CD that came with your sound card.
If you don't already have a decent sound recorder, you can find them on
download.com, or you can check out www.waveflow.com (it's a shareware wave
recorder/editor that I came across). The interface for it is kinda
cheesy, but it'll record, and that's the important thing.
(All these recording instructions are assuming that you're using WaveFlow,
but any wave editor will have similar settings.) I suggest that in order
to save recording space, you record at the following settings: a
frequencey of 22050, in stereo, at 16 bit. All you have to do is click
the record button (the red circle), tell the computer where you want to
save it, and then click record. Then open the MIDI file and start it
playing (it would be smart to already have the MIDI file open by
double-clicking it, then just click stop - this will leave the window open
for easy access so all you have to do is click the play button). When
it's done playing, click the Stop button in WaveFlow, and it will open the
wave file that it's recorded. Select the silence at the beginning and go
to the Edit menu, then choose delete. Do the same for the silence at the
end of the file. Save the file and you're done!
Now, the second part: Encoding it into an MP3. Here's where it gets
tricky. You have to find an MP3 encoder if you don't already have one.
If you don't have one, a nice, free, small program you can download is
Rightclick-MP3. You can download it from my server at
http://cout.dhs.org/rightclick.exe - it's nice and compact. All you have
to do once you've installed it is right-click the wav file you made and
choose encode. It's pretty easy.
Third step: Uploading. To upload this MP3 file to my server, open an FTP
client and type in cout.dhs.org in the hostname. For username, use
ytsejam, and for password, use your email address. If you don't have an
FTP client, you can download one at www.cuteftp.com. You can just upload
your file to the directory that it logs you into.
If you don't want to bother downloading an FTP client, you can use your
web browser, though it's a little more difficult that way: You have to
type in the following into your web browser's address bar:
ytsejam@cout.dhs.org/d/server/acos/">ftp://ytsejam@cout.dhs.org/d/server/acos/
Then go to the File menu and choose Upload if using Netscape Navigator, or
drag-and-drop your MP3 file if you're using Internet Explorer.
That should be everything that you need to do this project. Thanks a lot,

Whoops, looks like a spoke too soon. It looks like Internet Explorer
doesn't let you upload files unless you have special settings set. Rather
than try and figure them out, I'll just give you a different method, the
text-based one.
Go to Start->Run, and type in the following: "ftp cout.dhs.org". Then
when it asks you for a username, type in 'ytsejam' and when it asks for a
password, type in your email address. Then type in the following: "put
<name of file>", where the <name of file> is the location and filename of
the mp3 you saved. For example, if you saved it as c:\acos-andrew.mp3 (I
don't suggest you just name it "acos.mp3" because that would pose some
problems - save it as "acos-<your name>.mp3" so that we don't run into any
files with the same name), then you would type "put c:\acos-andrew.mp3"
and it will try and upload the file. When it's done, just type 'bye' and
it will automatically quit for you.
If the location where you saved it has a space in the folder name, such as
"My Documents", then you need to put quotes around the filename, such as
this: put "c:\my documents\acos-andrew.mp3"
If you have any problems, let me know.

It's been a long time coming, but Eleventh Hour/Images and Words are =
back! We were all pretty busy during the hiatus which lasted almost all =
of 1999. Tony was in Europe for 6 months working on his masters degree, =
Greg had a baby (actually his wife did), Rich did a side project, and we =
recorded a Dream Theater cover song for a tribute CD. We also wrote a =
bunch of great new material which we plan to put on a CD real soon.

Now that we're back, we've booked several shows in the Upstate New York =
area:

- Saturday Feb. 5th at the Penny Arcade in Rochester. We will be =
opening the show as Eleventh Hour, playing a one hour set of original =
material. Then, after a short break, we'll switch over to Images and =
Words and play a 2+ hour set of Dream Theater!

- Saturday Feb. 12th at the Penny Arcade in Rochester. Eleventh Hour =
will play a 45 minute set as the opener for 2112, a fantastic Rush =
tribute band.

- Saturday Feb. 26th at Classic Rocks in Buffalo. This show will be the =
same format as the one on the 5th, with Eleventh Hour opening for Images =
and Words.

I'm going to second the 'pro-electronic drums' motion. I've owned a Roland
TD-7 Stage kit since June, and I'm immensely happy. For home recording,
they're a gift. With all the multiple kits, and the flexibility, I can make
the kit sound like some old 80's thrash metal kit, or a tight kit, a la
Mike's kit during last years xmas concerts. I don't think I'd use them for
gigging, but for us home recording buffs, they're the greatest.

You also gotta consider, however, that Bohnam was sloppy as all hell. The
guy had GREAT feel, and yes, an incredibly spastik foot, but he has one of
the dirtiest drum sounds I've ever heard. Then again, that may have been
what he was all about. I like Bohnma but.... man when I hear the drum part
on "Rock & Roll" I cringe.. especially that horrible solo at the end, ugh.

Got that beat. My former-tennis coach claimed to be
in Rush at one point. Some people claimed him to be
on their first album (which I cannot verify since I
don't listen to Rush). Anyway, the man's name is Rick
McCown. Does that ring any bells for anybody? He's
kinda old, so I figured he might be telling the truth
or just might be a big fan. Anyway, my brother went
over to his house to help him move out (or maybe move
in) and claims to have seen a lot of Rush memorabilia.

weird...

was good but I don't think he could/can make his foot go as spastic as
Bonham did on 'Good Times, Bad Times' when Plant is singing "I know what
it means to be alone. I sure do wish I was at HOME." That's ONE foot
there, no double drumming shiz. Bonham was on lethal doses of speed.

write a song :).... I'm simply making an observation about the level of

more than John or Paul. Tunes like "Here Comes The Sun" and "If I Needed
Someone" are classic. There's so much in their basic riffs upon which
many rocks bands built more complex stuff. Gotta start somewhere though,
right? A lot of what they were about was the (counter)culture of the
time (i.e. Taxman) as much as it was the songwriting and music.
Writer" (and of course the flipside* "Rain") and 'ran with it' more. At
the end of 'Rain' where they're playing tapes backwards, kinda the
pre-cursor to things we hear digitally now (hmmm?????? say on the intro
to TDoE?). It's a shame they broke up so early on into the 70's because
that was the formative years of prog and it would have been interesting
to see where they might have gone.
