there would be no PROG period dot com..they invented the idea of continuity
within songs and albums.. *don't argue classical with me..i'm talking rock
and roll here :)*.. sgt.pep was a milestone in music.."not inovative" my
    ass.

i'm not a big beatles fan as i don't really enjoy listening to it much.. but
you have to kick it down for them..

    Just my opinion:

I've always approached the Beatles as 2 distinct bands, the pre Sgt. Pepper
Beatles and the Sgt. Pepper's on Beatles. The former being completely
inessential, the latter being one of the most amazing, most trippy, most
    amazing bands ever.

I just read earlier on DT's web site that they just added a tour date
in St. Louis at Mississippi Nights on Feb. 14. Totally cool, though
I'd rather see them at the American Theater. I plan on being at
both the Feb. 13 Chicago show and this one. If anyone wants to

First off congratulation on an integgligent post. First off I belive that
there is a degree of good sense in rating the musicains in the way that you
do..... but I belive that this not an exautive way of doing things. Using
Bassest as an example as you do. I think the best basssit wsa Jaco.. just
not on teh level of technique but on teh level of feel. Have you ever heard
the track "Skunk Funk" from teh Brecker Brothers album Heavy Metal Be-Bop..
God damn that is some of thefunkiest playing ever, period. I would say
Jacos feel pulls him far beyond Manring/Alan Caron etc.

I also think musical context has a big role to play. If Myung released solo
albums in the vain of Manring who knows what he would do.. I think the
most valid way of comparing musicians is teh solo album were they have
comlete artistic control. Say Vai verus Satch. (To MY EARS Vai wins hands
down as I think Joes' compositions are very poor)

But if you want to get into it you could devise runs for technicallity,
compostion, feel etc etc Each Rung canot carry equal weight in differnt
musical styles. EG feel would be of greater import in funk that techincal
    brilliance.

I rate muisicans mostly on there ability to communicate in the context that
they put themselves in, to me.. but I still take note of how technically
good they are and this comes a close second. But baring in mind my "boat
floats" for a more technical style so I prefer a ceratin type of player who
communacates to me on my chosen level. Same is true for every one.. In the
UK in a magazine Flea was rated best bassist of all time, Jaco was 7th.....
    says it all ;}

Bands otehr than DT that every one on the jam likes.. hmmm.

In MY exprience Dt fans range from prog hards to death metal freaks. But I
might suggest that your averge DT fan is a pretty cosmpolitan type of
person, able to find worth in many styles of music and differnt bands.

I would guess that most people reading this now are musicains and as such
like a particular style (amongst others) of music, DT's style.

So I think that the only universally like band here is DT but how a bout
    Zappa?!?

To divulge which composers do Dt fans go for I personally love Stravinski
    and Bartok

I don't know if I'd label them grunge.... Most alternative
rock has no vocal or compositional ability that I've yet
discerned, while AiC tend to play/sing fairly clearly.
Their sense of harmony is almost freakish.

I don't know if KM started the trend, or if he picked up
on an emerging one, but it seems his is among the most
copied for prog key-players nowadays, probably because
it gives them a chance to compete with the guitars.

If you can get around the accent (not difficult) and lyrics
(could really use work), the Italian band Arkhe' comes pretty
    close to the I&W sound.

More of people should join the Napster thing that someone mentioned. It's
a bit buggy at the moment but it still works. Go to their site ( I think it s just
    www.napster.com)

    > Go straight to your room and start listenin' to Rush, boy!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Go get King Crimson's In the Court
of the Crimson King and listen to the first track. Thats right, the first track
on the first ever prog rock CD (the first main one) is also the first ever
    prog metal song!

On a side note, does any one else find that when they play Dream Theater
for friends, that if they keep it to a minimum the response is often very positive.
For example, normally when I am noodling around on my classical guitar people
don't pay much attention unless I play something they know, but whenever I
play Another Day, they all look up and say - 'What's that?' They also then ask
if I can sing the words and I laugh and say "No way!" (my vocal range is just a
    few notes down low somewhere)
Its funny because people often say - "It's kind of 80s... but its not that bad."
And also people love the Liquid Tension Experiment albums, especially the more
mellow tracks like Liquid Dreams or Chris and Kevin's Excellent adventure.

These are URLs for some Macedonian ethno based music stuff. Complete albums on MP3. In the last year or so quite a few foreign fellows contacted me about these bands of ours. They were thrilled by this music which they heard accidenttly and wanted to know anything available. I think this might be a new music for most of the Westerns, something unheard before. Ready for a challenge? :) Go for it! I strongly recomend checking it.

What you are describing actually sounds like something I could learn to live with. The guy who runs the rehearsal room I play in, just bought a standard V-drum kit and I thought he'd gone clinically insane. I was ready to fissure his head with a cleaver for spending our money on what I thought was pure crap, but now I can't wait to check them out! The best thing about them (I've heard) is that expensive microphones are rendered useless. It'll make life in the studio much more pleasant!

    Your opinion

    Your opinion

    Again, your opinion

(this and the above opinions may be shared by many people, but that doesn't change the fact that they are opinions)

    >Not to mention the many innovations that > they were rsponsible for in the recording process itself.

I think most of that credit should go to George Martin.

    >Music would not be where it is today if not for the Beatles.

Music SUCKS today. (yes, I know that's an opinion too, but if you're talking about how good an artist is, mentioning today's music takes you down a few notches on the credibility scale.)

    >I can GUARANTEE you there would be no Dream Theater as we know it.

    a) no, you can't, and 2) maybe some of the things I really dislike about DT would be gone if the Beatles had never existed.

There is no line to be drawn. If you like a musician, they're good. If you don't like 'em, they suck. Simple as that. -Banjoman

    Hi y'all,

I also like to thank Dave Thomas to put so much effort in his list, even though I don't agree with all his choices.

like Brian Hansen wrote: Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger, Pear Jam - 10 and Alice in Chains - Dirt are top choice even if you don't care for Grunge at all.

On my list you'd also find: Anthrax - The sound of white noise: The first "modern" Metal album of the decade. Judas Priest - Painkiller: no comment. Rammstein - Herzeleid: More of a german phenomenon. IQ - Subterranea: I'm still surprised they didn't get more exposure on this list. Anathema - Alternative 4: unbelievable in the feelings this album creates. and about 200 other CDs from different genres...

    >Can't agree more with including all of Symphony-X. I >would put TDWoT at # 2. > >Tool - Gotta have 'em. Dave did. > >White Zombie - I would have to rate "La Sexorcisto" as >the definitive Zombie disc. Just a preference I guess. Gotta agree on these too...

    >Additions - If you go into other styles of music, >you'd have to have a longer list. Here's some that >didn't make Dave's list: > >The Black Crowes/The Southern Harmony and Musical >Companion - One of the best albums ever recorded. It's >in the blues/rock style, kinda of an updated Rolling >Stones style. Definately a classic: a wonderfully flowing album, not a single stinker on there, although I never really cared for the Rolling Stones comparisons.

    >The Counting Crowes/August and... - Another disc that >started a style. There would not have been a Matchbox >20 or Wallflowers without this disc. The more clones >you have, the better you must have been... MAYBE they started a fashion, but there were others doing this kind of music first. Counting Crowes were only the first to be pushed by a major record company and "Mr.Jones" was force fed to the eMpTyV-crowd. Sorry, I don't see anything special about this album... (although it sits on my CD-shelf...:-)

    >Snoop Doggy Dog/Doggystyle - OK, most of the people >here probably don't like one of the major styles of >the decade, but this was the best. Sorry Brian, you had it coming... I was waiting for the day to either blackmail you for some nice bootleg or just to make you pay for a few pitchers for the Calicrew. It doesn't really matter that I don't like Snoop Doggy Dog or any other 90s rap, but to bring this up on the ytsejam is just an attempt at social suicide and I want to help you with this by giving the crowd your most infamous quote: "Snoop Doggy Dog is the Dream Theater of Rap Music" - Brian Hansen (on the way to the Spock's Beard show in SF) oh the humanity, the suffering!!! How dare he... :-)

    >Korn - Let's combine Metallica with rap[..] I don't even want to touch this with a ten foot pole...

    >Fear Factory - I would have to include Obsolete. Hell, >it's even a concept album. EDGECRUSHER!!! Thanks for introducing Fear Factory to me. You guys take care (and Brian: talk to you soon) jerry

    >< It starts off fast and entertaining, then gets a little slow and boring, but it's worth sticking around for the bizarro ending. For the record, I wasn't a huge fan of his previous film, Boogie Nights, either. My picks for movie of the year are Being John Malkovich, American Beauty, and Run Lola Run. The Green Mile was pretty good too. ><

Re: ending of Magnolia...hasn't that actually happened before? maybe not in that magnitude, but i heard it did happen, maybe in biblical times or something. weird, weird shit. its been an exceptional year for movies, surprisingly. a *lot* of good films to see this past year.
