    >our JP! Or did you mean JM?

Yeah, who's going to notice if JM gets killed? You never can hear him in
the mix anyway (except for FII). Doh! *duck dodgers* Perhaps I'll no
longer kill John P. off in my dream sequence, but just leave him mortally
wounded and brain dead. Then, after my stellar performance, they will graft
his undamaged arms to my torso allowing me to shove Jordan out of the band,
playing guitars and keys at once, while at the same time leaving Mike in a
complete state of envy. :) (Mike shouldn't bitch though. He's got that
'mysterious' third arm). Imagine the thrill of four arms. You could please
two women, yourself, and still have a free hand for that cigarette. Now
    >that's< multi-tasking. :) Bill Gates would be proud.

On a totally different subject, I just got a new CD today featuring Andreas'
four lesbian sisters. :) Not too shabby. Someone had posted a link on Mike
P.'s forum so I bought it on impulse. They sound like Alice in Chains
(Facelift era) with breast implants. Quite enjoyable. And so is the music.

Yeah Ice Age are great, perhaps more surprisingas they are on the kiss of death Magna Carta label. Whenever I hear them I can only think of one band, STYX :)

I've been off the Jam for a month, so sorry if anyone has already asked this. It looks like DT will be playing the Roxy on Feb. 27th, but when I called the Roxy's number, the automated message did not include DT in the list of upcoming events. Does anyone know what is the best way to obtain Roxy tickets? Should I go to the box office? Is this show confirmed? Thanks!

Yep, you are correct sir!!! i made a mistake... I read the add again and saw that it was all new TAMA gear. not too shabby though. Yeah I thought that MP used DW peds so i just figured they would put them in the bunch also... no such luck I guess.

As far as korgys post on the things we all like, I have to agree. it's pointless for us to keep up this thread... let's do the jammers music thing!!!

So Skadz, are you gonna create a site for ytsejam music? if so let us know and we can send you links or such...

Dave did a great job on it and you can clearly tell how much thought and time he put into it. I'd heard Conception once before but didn't care for it, but upon seeing FLOW listed at #1, I gave it a try....and it's one of the best CDs I bought in 1999. :)

I was especially pleased to see such choices as Devin Townsend's Ocean Machine and my friends' band Godhead listed -- not overtly prog as someone observed, but still great CDs. (Ocean Machine is one of my surprise all-time ever faves. :))

Hey, it's not my problem that you can't admit that Willie is the man. James LaBrie may have the range, but he's got no emotion on Willie Nelson, man. And Petrucci? Let's just say, speed isn't everything. It's all about feel, baby, and there's nothing I like feeling better than old wrinkly rednecks.

It was just redone and, according to my neohippie ex-roommate, who saw many a jamband there, is an outstanding venue, both in atmosphere and sound. They tacked the "Theatre" on the end to make it seem more posh, a concept which, I might add, works with damn near everything.

    > With all the talk of drum setups (particularly Bozzio's), something else > to mind: does anyone on the 'jam have experience with Roland V-drums?

Ok. I'm not a drummer, but yes, I have played on a Roland kit. My friend the dummer has played on a V-drum kit. My other friend the drummer owns a V-drum kit. And my friend's little brother the drummer has played on a V-drum kit. Now...

Just from the fact that these guys swoon whenever anyone mentions V-drum must be a credit to the intrument. :) But, they do have their criticism. Basically all they really complain about is the dynamics. While the kit almost plays like a real kit, it doesn't play like a real kit. It does sense light taps and heavy hits, but basically that's it. There's no playing around the rim. You hit the pad on the edge and it makes the same sound as if you hit it in the center. That's the no. 1 and only bitch I've heard about the kit. It's like picking a guitar at the neck and picking it at the bridge and getting the same sound. Most guitarists probably wouldn't give a fuck anyway...

One thing's for certain, they sound kick ass. (Well, the samples do anyway). Aside from all else, my friends all look like they're having sex when they get behind one. Draw your own conclusions from there, and go try one out. You'll love it, it's a way of life!

Since Christopher Ptacek (excuse me) requested that I be the volunteer (read: guinea pig) I thought I'd bite and set the ball rolling...

Back on a wet and rainy (well, warm and dry anyway) March (or was it April) day last year (1999) my friend the drummer (Matt) brought me a tape from some local kid (Nathan) and asked what I could do with it (wipe my ass with it). Nuff sub-dialogue.

So, I spun the tape to see what this local bonerboy could do and had to listen to this horribly recorded "demo" of him playing his parent's 50 year old digital Roland thingy and him singing into a microphone strategically placed 20 feet away from the piano and him. Anyway... This kid wanted me to work with his song and see what I could do. It was a VERY basic melodic thingy consisting of only two basic parts. A bridge part and a chorus part. And it was horribly repetitious. So, I spent a day coming up with shit I could throw onto it, Korged up his original passages, and sat down with my good buddy Matt to put it all together. It ended up taking around five three hour sessions to come up with what we came up with. All of the keyboard parts are sequenced (sorry) except for the horn solo. I came up and programmed the drum lines which were edited by Matt (I was being too proggy as usual). After recording those I threw in the bassline and the guitar solos. Time was short so we never got the vocals or the intermediate guitar tracks laid down. Since Nate wanted to have it done for his Senior Prom we just had to give him what we had so he sang the vocals at his prom and we abandoned the project on after.

So... This is basically a short instrumental demo that was partially written by myself and some kid named Nate that I only met like once or twice. heheheh. Basically everything was programmed, arranged, sequenced, played, and produced by yours truly (with a little help from Matt, of course, credit due) :)

Gimme some input on this if you will. It's almost as much my own song as it is Nate's anymore. I put alot of work into it and everything you hear is signature me. :) Razz the wussiness and my sloppy playing all you want. I know I kind of suck. :) Just keep in mind that it was written and intended to be played at a smalltown Senior Prom. -- KorgX3

There's that Dave guy from Wendy's again! Man, that Cheddar bacon burger that's in heavy rotation looks damn good!

Anyway, thought I'd throw a couple of comments in on this topic of best of the 90's...

First of all, Dave's list is definitely a list to check out for prog metal fans. Dave has prefaced the whole list with the disclaimer that these are the discs he has bought, so no one should be shocked if their favorite rap album didn't make the list. Dave may like rap, but he didn't put any on the list. (How do you sort all those discs? A manual bubble-sort?)

    My comments:

Mark Bonilla - Is that obscure or what? I know I saw him live, but I have no idea when or where.

Soundgarden - Sell out or apex? I've been a Soundgarden fan since the "Full On..." stage, but I have to say that Superunknown was the top of their form. It was so good that it was overplayed, and resulted in oversaturation, but it still may be my favorite. Call me crazy, but I like well-crafted pop. Can't say anything bad about the Badmotorfinger selection though.

Grunge - Pearl Jam/10 - It's not on the list, but since you strayed a little into the grunge area, I gotta say that this is in my top 10 of the 90's. It spawned a whole style. It suffered from the same oversaturation as Superunknown, but I can't hold that against it. All PJ after that was a big step down. I blame Eddie. They wrote all the music on 10 before Eddie joined. They should have done the same with the rest of their recordings.

More grunge - I'd put Alice in Chains/Dirt in the top ten (maybe #3?). I would also include Facelift in there somewhere.

Can't agree more with including all of Symphony-X. I would put TDWoT at # 2.

Tool - Gotta have 'em. Dave did.

White Zombie - I would have to rate "La Sexorcisto" as the definitive Zombie disc. Just a preference I guess.

    DT/Awake - You suck! Why isn't this number 1! ;o)

Additions - If you go into other styles of music, you'd have to have a longer list. Here's some that didn't make Dave's list:

The Black Crowes/The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion - One of the best albums ever recorded. It's in the blues/rock style, kinda of an updated Rolling Stones style.

The Counting Crowes/August and... - Another disc that started a style. There would not have been a Matchbox 20 or Wallflowers without this disc. The more clones you have, the better you must have been...

Snoop Doggy Dog/Doggystyle - OK, most of the people here probably don't like one of the major styles of the decade, but this was the best.

Korn - Let's combine Metallica with rap, and this was a major force. Love it or hate it, they were a big player in the 90's. Anthrax saw the future and tried to mix rap and metal, but they were too far ahead of the times. Korn was the fruition of the style. Let the clones follow the leader.

Fear Factory - I would have to include Obsolete. Hell, it's even a concept album.

    my $.02, BH

p.s. Thanks to Dave for the list...

You bet wrong. I H A T E the Beatles. Nothing innovative. Nothing spectacular. Nothing moving. Major boring shit. Piss-poor singers and instrumentalists. One of the worst things to ever happen to music, IMO. They've just a little more integrity than one of today's "boy bands."

    > KorgX3 also thinks the Beatles sucked. Never liked 'em.

Thank God! Someone with some sense...

Yikes, talk about harsh. Anywho, I've kinda changed my position on the Beatles-- I maintain that Ringo is a shitty vocalist, drummer and songwriter, but there are quite a few Beatles songs that I enjoy. The early stuff kinda leaves me cold. I dig some stuff on Revolver, but for some reason I love the shit out of the White Album (which is basically a solo-showcase for the individual members; but anyway). But I can see how, given the alternative, someone might prefer DT to the Beatles since it's no question about which band is more musically complex (and being that this is a DT mailing list, I don't feel the slighest pressure to qualify that statement).

I don't think the Beatles are the best thing since sliced bread (few things can compete with sliced bread, IMHO), but to compare them to BSB or 'N Sync seems a little... I dunno, harsh. Ouch.
