It's not just your imagination. Only a matter of time is the last track of
When Dream And Day Unite, DT's debut album. It's also one of the best
songs from WDADU, IMO. _And_ they've played part of it on their last
    European mini-tour.

I'm vaguely ashamed to admit that I didn't know this...I got played na tape
of WD&DU just after I'd got into DT, and it nearly put me right off again.
Absolutely hatred it. Still don't know any of the song titles. Even TKH,
although having heard the version with James on L@TM, I kinda like that one
now. It wasn't just the vocals (although that accounted for 99% of the
problem...I'm still dying to hear a *studio* version of TKH with JLB on vox,
or even if they play it on this tour...:)). But it was just too much, I
hated it. Yes, even The Ytsejam, which I still can't listen to all the way
through, even though I love Sherinian's version of the piano break in the
middle on OIaL, and it's a cool cod-classical main riff. One day I'll buy
the album, just for the sake of completing the set. Don't hold yer breath,
though; it'll be a while before I'm up to speed on WD&DU.

    1. Bands Everyone Likes: Give it up. There are 1000+ people on this list and
it's pretty much an impossibility that everyone'll agree on a band (apart
from DT) that everyone likes. The only one that I'd even consider mentioning
as even remotely possible is Tori Amos... but wait, I can't stand her. :)

    2. Pixel Planet: I checked this out when Dave first mentioned it. This is
probably the only worthwhile 'Top XX of The Last Decade' lists that I've
seen or read; very well-written, thoughtful, and honest, it read like a good
book. I kept waiting to see what was next. Hats off to Dave for taking the
time to write this and share this with us. BTW: you're right, if NIN's PHM
had been made in '90, it'd be at the top of my list too.

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids...

    Stephen inquired:
    >Another cd I bought on a whim is Ice Age, the Great Divide, another great
    >cd. Does anyone else like this disc?

Hell, yes. The only reason "The Great Divide" didn't make my top 10 of last
year was that I got it for Christmas and thus didn't get to listen to it
until the year was almost over. :) Ice Age is a bit derivative of DT, but
they are strong enough musically to stand on their own merits. Fantastic
vocals and keyboards from Josh Pincus, very Styx-like at times, powerful
drums from Hal Aponte, melodic guitars from Jimmy Pappas, and strong bass
by Arron DiCesare. Very, very good stuff, and a CD length of almost 75
    minutes as an added bonus.

Check out one of the four or five versions of their homepage (!!) at
    http://www.ice-age.com for more info.

I'm reposting this (even though several people have commented that Dave's a
jammer and the site kicks ass) simply because it needs more advertisement.
The "Top 90 CDs of the 90s" is essential reading. Period.

    | Last time DT was through DC, they played the Capitol Ballroom, which is a
    | shithole with a capital shit. Is that place still a venue? I heard it got
    | transformed into a danceclub or something.

the Ballroom was sold a couple years ago to another management company
who renamed it Nations. AFAIK, it's still open and they still have the
main stage area for bands and separate dance floor/rave area. it's been
the same setup since i was in high school. ie. they've held raves there
    for years.

I never saw what the big deal about Zep was. I just don't hear what I'm supposed to hear. I'll bet everybody likes the Beatles, though. I can't see anyone not liking the Beatles. I can see why people don't like DT, or Flatt & Scruggs, or Phish, but I just can't see how anyone could not like the Beatles. I guess I'm probably gonna find out sometime during the next few jams =^) It may not count, but I'd say that probably everybody on the list likes Liquid Tension Experiment at least a little (stress LITTLE =^)...But they're 3/4 of DT so I dunno if they count.

And speaking of the non-DT 1/4 of LTE, what's this I hear about King Crimson (minus Levin, so that's really NOT a good segue =^) only playing 3 US shows on their upcoming tour, ALL in Florida, of all places! Zep or Metallica would have been my guess, along with other metal greats like Trixter. Someone mentioned Savatage. Bzzzz! Uh-Uh! Gutter Ballet was okay, but the whole Meat Loaf meets cheez-metal schtick got old real fast. It makes one wonder if Jon Oliva and Jim Steinam (Mr. Loaf's collaborator) are the same person. Hey All ..

As for a band everyone likes, the closest you are going to get is Dream Theater and as Madsman said, there may even be a couple of lurkers on the list just trying to gather enough information to undermine the Dream Theater Empire. :) So, what that means is SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. No more discussion on this please, we'll just end up filling up people's mailboxes going in circles.

I do like Ptacek's idea of getting a web page togther listing URL's for jammer's music and stuff. Maybe something to do with my copious amounts of free time.

amen! it's been dry lately..it usually takes me about a minute tops to skim through meaningless redundant posts and click *delete* with a sigh. so i'm with chris:

i don't have any actual music to share with you as nothing has been recorded yet..however, i have been playing and writing a LOT..at the moment i've put my focus towards one piece of music that seems to be emerging..i think for the first time in my short musical career i'm writing something i can respect..

the concept and parameters i gave myself for writing this are fairly simple..i've set out to write an entire piece built around common tonality..every time the music progresses in any way, a part of the former chord/triad stays behind, so to speak..at least this was what i was trying to accomplish originally..i've strayed completely from my original intention, but the outcome thus far has stunned me..separate movements working together..this is the first time i've written outside of scalular/modal structure..even if i've written music that modulates in the past it's been written around the modulation.. in this i've lost that rigid sense of formality that's plagues me..this doesn't sound anything like McLaughlin but i'm thinking he's probably where I've drawn much of my inspiration from in this..anyways..i'm sure i'm not creating anything grounding breaking for many here, but it's been a big step for me..

I don't know why everyone must make sweeping generalizations that there might be another band that absolutely everyone listens to... Really, the only band that I like that has been mentioned on this list is Metallica (pre and post Load/Burton). Other than the dreaded "M" word, I don't listen to much prog except for Dream Theater and the mainstay of side projects/solo efforts such as LTE, Platypus, Derek Sherinian, Chroma Key, etc ... That's right, I don't listen to Rush, Zep, The Beatles, Tori (she has been at the back of my mind though...), or even Spock's Beard.

Oh for the love of God (re: Saigon Kick). I think everyone loves Jesus. I think everyone drinks Coca-Cola, uses Cottonelle Toilet Paper, likes to listen to Anne Murray sings the New Testament... Everyone likes Kosher Pickles, Spicy BBQ Doritoes, and everyone only drives Hondas. Everyone loves the Beatles, everyone believes the new millenium doesn't really start until 2001. Everyone prefers Monterey Jack cheese. Everyone likes Burger King more than McDonald's.

I can't believe that with everyone liking all of the same things that there are such a variety of things that nobody likes! I mean, what a waste of time! With a world where everyone likes the same things, why is "variety" even a word?

You are NOT going to find a common band on this list that everyone likes, not even remotely. I doubt you'll even find a band that 80% of the people on this list commonly enjoy. That's not a challenge, it's a guarantee. So please. Enough! Please, please, oh please, let this turn into a flamewar about people's rights to post whatever they want here rather than this boring, insulting thread. Yes, I consider it an insult when someone else assumes to know what I like.

    >jams =^) It may not count, but I'd say that probably everybody on the list >likes Liquid Tension Experiment at least a little (stress LITTLE =^)...But

Granted I like LTE a little. I also like the smell of farts a little (stress LITTLE) yet I still don't appreciate it when people let them go in my office. You can take it from here. -- KorgX3 also thinks the Beatles sucked. Never liked 'em. NP: Shadow Gallery - Warcry.mp3

A small point, but I don't think any DW gear is included with this. AFAIK, the only DW product Mike uses is bass drum pedals, and this giveaway includes a Tama Iron Cobra bass drum pedal. Still a good deal, though. ;)

    >Here's a really bizarre suggestion: U2. Yes, I know that they're neither >prog nor metal, but on a more generic scale, I don't think I've ever met >anyone who didn't like them at least a little. But of course, with the >thousand or so people here on the jam, I'm probably going to be proven wrong >very, very soon...

Yep. U2 is one of those bands that actively invoke my gag reflex. I very quickly turn the channel on the radio if a U2 song comes on. DT covering U2 isn't quite ad bad, but even then it only reaches the point of "ho-hum filler material"

I refuse to contribute to this stupid thread, so I'm not going to say that LTE is boring crap.

You didn't hear it here first.

    Hello!

Matt "Yngwie" Molite begged our forgiveness thus: >before everyone jumps on my case, I'd like to apologize for the HTML >format of my last email :-P Im not used to the new format DTmail is >using, and I forget to uncheck "send as HTML"

If you weren't such a talented musician, I'd have to give you a whoopin' for that one! Don't slip up again, beeyotch!

Carlos Alfaro and Chris (Awake77) both said: [Meshuggah RAWKS!] (in different words)

I'll gladly cast the third vote, and I know a certain Mr. Matt Molite is absolutely infatuated with the light that is Meshuggah. Eh, Matt? ;-)

    >Here's something I'm interested in, personally. Has someone compiled a list >of URLs of Jammer's music yet? I really want to hear some of the stuff you >guys are writing these days.

    <SHAMELESS PLUG>

I'll have to jump on this opportunity before Matt (Molite) can, and direct anyone who may have the time to the URL of our band's site:

    http://www.crosswinds.net/~eleventhour/

Yes, I *know* there's already an Eleventh Hour in existance, and so does Matt -- he and the rest of the band had the name selected before I was "recruited" as singer/songwriter. Maybe some private e-mail will finally convince him to change it to something *gasp* original? ;-) Name suggestions are welcome. :)

Anyway, [11h] as of now, at least where I'm concerned, is a temporary project, and we'll be cutting a 5-song CD titled "Currents Drifting" over this following summer. We've been bouncing ideas back and forth via MIDI files, e-mail and phone, as we live about 3 hours apart, and won't start actual rehearsals until May. There aren't any sound files on the site yet, but if you e-mail Matt or myself we'll gladly send you the 4 MIDI's we have. For more info, check the site, and take a second to sign the guestbook.

And if you're *REALLY* bored, you can check out my personal homepage as well. http://www.crosswinds/net/~biaxident

    Later!

God don't tell the Yanks you have a "parade of shops" - they will imagine a Shops Marching Band!! I suppose Capt Mainwaring could be the drum major ...

Perhaps Korg was right in American speak .... But not in REAL English :-p

Try it this way - an oovula

    >Korg was right, because the word "uvula" starts with a glide ("YOOVyula" >is how it's pronounced). In this case, the "why" sound isn't considered a >vowel and thus you would NOT say "an uvula" but rather "a uvula."

You really shouldn't imagine things like that even in jest - you never know. Think how awful you would feel if anything like that really ever happened to our JP! Or did you mean JM?
