Well, I would have thought that Zep would have been the most likely choice on
this but apparently not! Since this is the case, I seriously doubt if there
is one other band that everyone likes. If there WAS one, it probably would've
been Zep.

OK. With 1000+ people on this list, there are not going to be any
universally shared traits (in the abstract vein, yes, we all have brains,
well, most of us anyway), I doubt that you will EVER find any band, food,
drink, toilet paper, contraceptive foam, comic, tongue depressor, plumbing
contractor, deity, or Aesopian fable that we all can agree on.
I think it's somewhat safe to say that we all like Dream Theater here (which
is still pushing things) and that is >all< that should be assumed, imo.

Hey guys, I was just curious if any of you out there were at the Toad's Place show in December of 1996, about 8 months before FII was released. The show was put together as a way for DT to loosen up before going into the studio and to keep the loyal fans from rioting. Anyways, if my memories serves me correct, the show was killer but had far too many opening acts. One of these opening acts (if I remember correctly) was a band called "The Beth Hart Band". This girl reminded me of Janice Joplin and several other vocally charged rock-women. She rocked the house (despite the fact that she was on stage about 30 minutes too long). <just wait, the point of this rambling will be apparent in a moment> After years of not hearing of the bands name (ever again) and thus, I was searching the sight of the Cains Ballroom (in Tulsa Oklahoma) because it my most local concert hall (I moved from New Hampshire to further my education in Oklahoma) and who is on the bill for a show in February but Johnny Lang with THE BETH HART band. Just thought that I'd share this will you :) Amazing how the past bites you in the ass sometimes. I never thought that I'd actually hear of a band in Oklahoma other than a country ack (RALPH!). I have _Tears Laid in Earth_, which is an excellent album nearly on par with Tristania's _Widow's Weeds_. Seems to be a bit mellower, but I attribute this opinion to the fact that I've been listening to the new Tristania and Enigma lately. :P

I tried to post this earlier and it didn't seem to work, so here it goes again...
After doing some surfing (which I hadn't done in awhile - DAMN this Internet is big!) I ran across www.pixelplanet.com which features a guy by the name of Dave who has compiled his 90 favorite CDs of the 90s! This guy LOVES prog and it is really obvious in his list. I'd say that under 20% of his entries are completely non-prog in any way. He puts a nice little paragraph next to each one explaining it and it really is a nice tour through prog in the 90's. Heavy and mellow, complex and eclectic, he's got it all covered.
It's a fun read and I'd recommend it if you've got a 1/2 hour to kill. The link is at www.pixelplanet.com

Bozzio has his own line of Sabian cymbals, called Radia, or maybe Radian. They're really cool. he has them set up two and three per stand, so he has tons of cymbals in a (relatively) small area. he also has them set up so he can play melodies on them. you can hear this really well in his CD Drawing the Circle. I've seen him perform solo twice, and it's just incredible. BLS is the best example of his playing in a band context that I've heard, but DtC really shows just how far ahead of everybody else he really is. -- James C. Coincidentally, Dave Thomas, who penned this list is a long-time resident of this mailing list. :) And not only is the list quite good and well-thought out, it also inspired me to pick up a few CD's 'off the cuff' simply based on his recommendations. And I'd like to say "Thanks" and point out that no cash or other items of value changed hands in order for these comments to be posted...
Really, it is appreciated. That article took a lot of time to write, and I had hoped that more people would comment on it, good or bad. I did get some nice e-mails from people, and some not so nice ones ("Images & Words" isn't #1? You suck!!!). The best was the one that called me a "sukkas" (actual spelling) for not having more "dEaTh METAL" which "RULZE!!!" This one went right into my archive, which includes such classic missives as "Can you get my email to work?"
Some days I question whether or not to work on this site. It certainly doesn't pay well. But I like the freedom of being able to write about whatever I want, and not have to worry about some editor putting his/her "spin" on my writing (one magazine I used to write for used to change my articles so much that the only thing that showed up in print as originally written was my name). Comments like this keep me from questioning whether or not to get out of bed in the morning. Well, I almost always answer that question with "sleeping until Noon is a GOOD thing" but I get up anyway...
So if you get a chance, check it out and let me know what you think. I have a bunch of stuff in the works for the site, including upcoming coverage of NAMM and related shows. Hope you find some of it interesting

Actually they didn't quite make it to Milwaukee metalfest this last year...There were a bunch of bands that had been scheduled for the event early on, but due to venue problems, most of the headliners dropped off...Other headliners include: Machine Head, Marduk, Morbid Angel, Dark Funeral, Satyricon, and some others...Flotsam and Jetsam made it, which I was very happy about...;) How about that for a band that the list might get into?

Last time DT was through DC, they played the Capitol Ballroom, which is a shithole with a capital shit. Is that place still a venue? I heard it got transformed into a danceclub or something.
The 9:30 Club is definitely a huge step up (though you probably can't pack nearly as many people in there as you could in the Ballroom). It would be an even better place to see a show, though, if they got a soundguy who didn't try to max the volume levels for everything. Rule of thumb: when you go to a show and you're wearing decent earplugs, but your ears are still ringing loudly at the end, chances are the volume was unnecessarily high.
A lot of venues do the same thing, I'm not trying to single out the 9:30. They go for "quantity" of sound over "quality". One of the things I like so much about the TLA in Philly is they never go overboard on the volume. The Electric Factory on the other hand...
The Tower Theater's a decent venue, but let me once again warn the Ytsejam audience, do NOT attempt to purchase upper-tier seats for any show if you are over, say 5'9". You will regret ever having legs by the end of the concert. Same goes for those of a portlier nature -- I personally don't know from experience on this one, but the hefty dude sitting next to me at the Yes show there last month was having much trouble only occupying his seat. In the end, he just sort of gave up, and let himself flow over the armrests into both my and his wife's seating zones. Remember, tall and/or overweight: just say no.

Okay, well you could look at Terry Bozzio's website, www.terrybozzio.com for the setup and the cymbals he uses are called radia, they are practically a whole 'nother line of Sabian cymbals, using everything from chinas to crashes that sound like chinas to cup chimes to splashes an things like that. I guess the idea was to make cymbals with more of a tone to put out better melodic music. Oh and by the way, Max stax are already released. I saw them at the International Association of Jazz Educators conference in New Orleans. I'm sure they will be at NAMM in two weeks in L.A., which I will also be at. . . :-). You could also have your local music store order them for you if you wish to buy them.

in response to the Terry Bozzio question. he uses various cymbal stacks that are actually his own line that he's had for a while now, i believe they're called the radia line by sabian. in the newest modern drummer with the dream drum kits on the front, a pic of bozzio's entire setup is shown....what a monster, hope this helps

THERE IS NO BAND THAT EVERYONE on this likes. I am SURE there are even NON DT fans on this list. This is an exercise in futility! Can't we get back to something exciting, like "my first DT experience" or "the best DT compilation" or "my review of the show" or something else that I can ignore without having a spaz?!
Metallica sucks. Zep Rules. Rush rules (Maddy hates Rush). What is the whole point? We are not a collective conscious (unless I've been left out, in which case... thanks!) 99% of you won't even UNDERSTAND why someone would listen to David Hykes, and a lot of you would bitch if we I decided to put in a Stevie Wonder album. The differences make it all interesting... we all have different tastes.
The jam is pretty lame lately. I think I know how we can fix it. I'll need 8 rolls of duck tape, some rope, a cauldron filled with boiling eel asses and a volunteer (Korg?) but I think if we each took a sip, it might go a long way towards breaking the general malaise here!
Here's something I'm interested in, personally. Has someone compiled a list of URLs of Jammer's music yet? I really want to hear some of the stuff you guys are writing these days. I'd like to encourage people to post about their own music, and what they're trying to accomplish (not about how great you are, and how everyone loves your band and you are the coolest... ) It would be appropriate for me to start off a thread like this with some of my own music, but I have very little to show for myself :)
IS THERE ANYTHING INTERESTING LEFT??? (man, I need this DT tour... the jam may still suck, but at least there'll be good tunes!)

I'd say that just about everyone on this list's pretty much enamoured to this band called "Liquid Tension Experiment"...:) If there had to be one other band that I'd say we all liked, it's Spock's Beard - insofaras I can't remember reading anything less than positive about them on here.

Well, I like enough Rush songs to fill up a C90 tape, but I wouldn't call myself a fan. Anyone who claims that they like early Rush is either a Zep fan too, or else they're just decieving themselves, let's face it!
