I havent posted to the Jam in a pretty long time, but this is a great
thread. I'll name a few(dozen;>) songs that plain just tug at my emotional
    heart and soul strings . . .:

Symphony X "Candlelight Fantasia" (first song to ever being me to tears)
    Labryinth "Falling Rain"
    Dream Theater "Finally Free"
    God Lives Underwater "23"
    Metallica "Fade to Black"
    Dream Theater "Space Dye Vest"
Black Sabbath "Feels Good to Me"
    Jars of Clay "Frail"
    Jars of Clay "Worlds Apart"
Nine inch Nails "Something I can never Have"
    Alice in Chains "Nutshell"
    Pantera "Hollow"
    Queensryche "Anybody Listening?"
    Queensryche "Eyes of a Stranger"
Symphony X "The Edge of Forever"
    Savatage "Desiree"
    Savatage "All that I Bleed"
White Lion "When the Children Cry"
    Pain of Salvation "Oblivion Ocean"
Pain of Salvation "Plains of Dawn"
    Pain of Salvation "Leaving Entropia"
Fates Warning "APSoG" (Espeically part VI)
Iced Earth "A Question of Heaven"
Boyz II Men "Can you stand the Rain?"

Theres a few . . . but those songs are probably some of the best on those
CDs. I love moving songs . . . those that touch you in no other way but to
make you think . . . to make you cry . . . Music is life, life is musical . .
    .

Just bought my tickets to the Phoenix, AZ. show at the Celebrity Theater
for January 31st. I will be driving up from Tucson. Are there any
    jammers from Tucson out there?

Anyway, the opening act is Gary Hoey. Tickets are $23.60 in advance and
$24.65 the day of the show. Add the $2.75 service charge and the total
comes to $26.35. Well worth it, in my opinion.

I was wondering if there are any ytsejam T-shirts available? I read
about them some time ago. I plan to go to the concert wearing one
proudly, if available. If anyone knows how, please send me a private
    e-mail.

    Thank you.

In a message dated 00-01-04 22:46:26 EST, you write:

    >about the below, since when do contracts mean anything in the music biz,
    >anyway? I was always under the impression that King's X had a 14 album deal
    >with Atlantic, and they're plying their craft for metal balde these days,
    >after only about 6 or 7 releases on Atlantic.....

If such a thing as a 14 album contract exists, an artist would have to be an
IDIOT to sign it. An artist usually wants to limit the term of the contract
to as short as possible, allowing for either a quicker period to renegotiate
or to get off the label as quickly as possible and sign with someone else.

That's a good point. I see that kind of thing a lot with other bands too. I
guess that in a lot of cases the record company has the option to terminate
the contact if they see fit perhaps?

Pretty much. Let's say you have a 5 album deal with Elektra. If you have a
decent lawyer, you should be able to get a guaranteed release clause put in
your contract (for those who don't know, just because a record company signs
you doesn't necessarily mean they will necessarily release your album, or
even allow you to record it in the first place, without language in the
contract promising so), forcing them to release your album (which is pretty
meaningless unless they are willing to promote it, which is often times more
expensive than the making of the album itself). But let's say they actually
"like" you are behind the album. They release it, promote it, and it only
sells 100,000 dollars. If the revenue generated from that amount is less than
they money they spent recording and promoting you, and there are no
reasonable indications that number will increase with further releases, they
will simply send you a notice of their desire not to renew your contract for
the remaining options periods, meaning you've been dropped after one album
even though you signed a "5 Album" deal.

Or maybe the band still gets some kind of base amount of money out of the
deal but the record company just decides to cut their losses and not release
    any more albums from them?

Sometimes circumstances too complicated to get into here do arise where a
label will buy out the remainder of the contract from a band (the so-called
    "pay or play" clause).

    >what do we get for getting to the 00s? (zeroes? zips? what the hell are
    >gonna call this decade, anyway? and when do we get to start making fun of
    >Nirvana and Pearl jam for making music that's. like, soooooo 90s?

I started about 5 years ago.

It's really really beautiful, but it doesn't make my eyes tear up. I = guess it's becuase I don't get into that state of mind after I've heard = the rest of the album :) Freaky stuff! "Hourglass" are more emotional but still those songs I listed before = strikes me more than this one, IMHO.=20 I listen to a lot of other weird stuff (lots of jazz, fusion & AOR) in = addition to prog. rock so I probably have another way of looking at = music, my own personal weird taste in music, ha ha. One album that blend all the different stuff I like is an album by Steve = Lukather called "Candyman". In all ways a perfect album, I think DT fans = can really dig, since most of the music is similar, melodious songs with = that special technical approach. The guys playing on it are accalimed as the best musicians in the world. = Steve Lukather himself have played on over 800 (!) albums. It features Simon Phillips on drums (a guy voted the best drummer in the = world, with our own Mike Portnoy at second place, by a magazine in the = Netherlands last year). Those who own the Magna Carta release "Encore, = Legends & Paradox" can hear him play on it.=20 I'll shut up know :)

I wasn't expecting anything from the grammy nominations, but to see Backstreet Boys nominated fro album of the year is really disheartening.....

at least Steve vai got a nod for "windows of the soul" (rock instrumental), and Tom Waits got a nom for male vocalist something or another for "Hold On" (Mule Variations also got a nomination for best folk (???) album). And Vic Wooten's jazz nom for Yin-Yang is well-deserved, I'm sure, even though I haven't been fortunate enough to pick that up yet....

As for the best off 99 list compiled by Neil, I have a mere 19 of those discs, but I was held back by the fact that a) I wasn't able to get my list out to him in time and b) more than half my top ten list either got 1 vote or none at all.....

i can't believe that only one person voted for what I consider the best album released last year, "Stupid Dream," by Porcupine Tree. Same goes for "Presents of Mind," from Tiles, which got some decent notices on this forum throughout the year. I realize that only about 30 people voted (i can't imagine too many folks left SFAM off their lists), and given that i wasn't one of them, I shouldn't be talking, but even with Neil's poll, I'm still curious as to what other people think were the best albums the last year had to offer.

And, since 3 of my selections were completely ignored..... Discipline -- Into the Dream (live) Really great stuff, all the more so because it comes with warts and all that.....basically no studio post-production massaging, so you hear the mistakes, but you also hear the raw passion in Matthew Parmenter's voice.....if you liked unfolded like staircase, it's a must get, and the older stuff gets royal treatment, too

Gay Dad -- Leisure Noise Don't know if the name of the band is a publicity stunt or a family secret let out, but the music approaches my definition of perfect pop. lots of sonical issues dancing around, one reviewer mentioned Brian Eno as a comparison, and I myself thought of Pink Floyd on a couple of occasions when i had the headphones strapped on. It's not progressive, it's definitely in the pop-rock vein, but they do it so damn well, borrowing a few key elements and mixing them up beautifully.

Joe Henry -- Fuse Beat poetry set to an urban groove.....the guy used to be roots rock, switched it up a bit for Fuse, and came up with a disc that didn't grab me at first, but has me wishing I didn't give the CD away back in May. The guy's voice and lyrics are at odds with the style of music, but somehow it all just fits perfectly.....highlights include an instrumental called "Curt Flood" (the baseball player whose actions led to free agency) and the cover of the song from the end of Dr. Strangelove. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Their drummer is Simon Phillips, he's one fucking monster. He really has fantastic solowork indeed.

If you want to hear great TOTO, get their latest live album, LIVEFIELDS. It has great songs, the guys are really tight (even Dave plays an enjoyable solo), and their first singer, Bobby Kimball is back in business once again. Really a great disc. Have to post my choices too, as I saw a few similar ones as I'd pick. So here goes:

Dream Theater: Space Dye Vest Take Away My Pain Through Her Eyes Spirit Carries On Finally Free

Shadow Gallery: Spoken Words Christmas Day

    Symphony X: Candlelight Fantasia

    Superior: This Promise

Toto: Could This Be Love (maybe not to you but it has a special meaning for me) Some of those ballads, not the cheesiest ones...

Mullmuzzler: Sacrifice Slow Burn (again, these have something for me that not everyone will hear)

Sorry for the explanations, but really, some of these wouldn't move me as much if they wouldn't have an additional meaning, as in lyrics that seem to talk about my life etc. --

Jimmy Buffet?!?! John Lennon?!? JEWEL?!?!?! I mean, come on thats just too much. These guys just totally misinterpret EVERYTHING as being satanic! Hell (no pun intended :)) I bet they could find something "satanic" in Pavorotti if he wanted to.

Ive, even encountered a kid in my school (who thankfully doesnt go here anymore) telling me that DREAM THEATER was satanic! The song he pointed out to me was Lie...funny thing is, two years ago, he was one of the most hardcore metalheads Ive ever met, its sad really...

Hey, just when you thought you got rid of the Kurtster, he returns in the year 2000 with a new Stereo (sony I like it but I know a lot of you think Sony's Crap) Its got a 5CD changer, and aux hookups, so I can play playstation in stereo sound now. You should hear Rainbow Six. Agghhh!

Anyway I read the grammy nominations and I am very confused and distraught. Music "analysts" nominate on how good the music is, not by popularity or sales. That is Bullshit. On the Queensryche message board someone has the whole explanation. I think its all about ratings, money, corporartions etc etc. RIAA is the evil monster. Best new artist: Kid Rock, Britney Spears, Christina Aguliketofuckher. How are these people artists? At least Steve Vai got nomintaed in best rock instrumental, but hes up against a a 60 year old man who found success by getting popular people to be on his CD. A great plan. Kudos Sanatana. I wonder if Rob Thomas will accept the award for you.

You fool, Santana has been a success since before you were born. Yes, it wouldn't have been so popular without that vocal, but to say that he "reached success" just because of that...you're nuts, boy.

I was about to jump on this too... true its a shame that his most popular cd is easily his crappiest one...but to say that is just ..not true. Besides being a very good guitar player, his music just grooves! Does anyone remember seeing him ripping it up on the woodstock movie? Damn!

LOL. You're absolutely right, too. Without Santana, too, we probably would never have been introduced to many, many wonderful artists he'd taken under his wing as well. Imaging a world without Journey, Steve Perry, Neal Schon, Bad English, or Greg Rollie. Egad! :)

I read a cool interview with Santana where he said something like, "It is a real honor to receive a grammy nomination, but when people say that 'it's long overdue' or after 30 albums it's 'about time I get my recognition,' I don't see it that way. To me, my awards came when I got calls from Buddy Miles, Eric Clapton, (insert list of legends here). To know that people have respected me on that level is better than any Grammy, Oscar, Tony, Emmy, or any other award out there."

But, you better sit down, Brian. I hear he's collaberating with a particular somebody (not sum buddy, damn mathematical algorithms!) for the whole of his next album. It's due to be released this fall and is tentatively titled "Santallica." Or maybe that was Metallica's upcoming Christmas album... -- KorgX3 eats the dead skin around his fingernails.
