    Happy new year, jamophiles!

With the discussion about WDADU's label around, could someone please answer a
    stupid question for me?

What exactly is the difference between a label and a record company?

Jam on (It's only one year till the new millennium - that'll be a party!)

    Alex

P.S.: Does a thing as a "prog sampler" exist somewhere in the CD landscape? I
want to look for some new stuff in addition to DT and I don't want to buy whole
    albums.

It's of JFK' Jr's death earlier this year. One of the band members (I believe it was MP) said it was just to show that the story (the regression therepy part) was taking place currently. -Mike C.

1/1/00 It's seven o'clock in the evening and i'm listening to a radio show dedicated to the best and most influensive metal bands of the '90s (note that the specific station is the most popular rock station in Athens). Dream Theater was at the top of the list and Images and Words was second in the "album of the decade" poll. I don't remember exactly how the lists go under #3 but here goes: Best albums of the decade: 1.Judas Priest : Painkiller 2.Dream Theater : Images and Words 3.Metallica : Black Album The list included Shadow Gallery with Tyranny,Megadeth with Countdown to Extiction,Slayer with Seasons in the Abyss,Savatage with Gutter Ballet etc etc The other list was based on this one,so: 1.Dream Theater(They got a lot of votes from SFaM too) 2.Judas Priest 3.Megadeth I'll try to find the station's website so that i can provide more accurate information.

Happy new year to all you jammers around the globe Cassidy NP:System of a Down by System of a Down

That other Gentle Giant fan said: If you got the One Way Records (there we are again) release of Free Hand, trash it and try to get the Terrapin Trucking one (UK release and out of print, so good luck). One Way used a wrong master tape, somewhat like a rough mix version, many great details of the final mix are missing.

You miserable bastard!!! You didn't have to tell me that!!!!!!! =^) How 'bout you just rip me a copy on MP3? It's out of print anyway, so it's not like you're taking any money out of the band's pockets....

SFAM cast: Nicholas - yea, I think Jim Carrey, too. I could see him doing that kind of serious stuff........... Victoria - every modern hollywood actress is pretty much the same, so it doesn't matter....find some chick who looks like a grown up version of the girl on the cover of I&W........ Julian - Gary Bussey Edward - Tim Curry Hypnotherapist - that depends on whether or not the Hypno really DOES kill Nicholas at the end. Assuming he doesn't, Tommy Lee Jones (TLJ just CAN'T play a bad guy!) Assuming he does, John Travolta. "Old Guy" - definitely George Clinton Enough rambling for now -Banjoman

Wow, there is definitely something wrong with me. Instead of reading that and thinking "May-sah" as in a company and the Spanish word for table, I thought "mee-sah" like "Mesa Jar Jar Binks! Mesa equipment is being for sale!" Just thought I'd share what an apparent Star Wars geek I am.

I picked up WDADU back in 1989, Charlie wasn't so bad, his voice fitted the music perfectly, so there was no problem.

The real shock I had was when I first heard James voice, when I picked up I&W. I've never been a big fan of James, I always thought he was the weaklink in the band, the most disposable.

Until now that is, with SFAM, I have a new found respect for his voice. After finally seeing DT live last month in Zwolle and Brussels, James was amazing, hitting every note, no wasteful screaming, so after 8 or so years he finally won me over, not that I think Charlie is better or anything, I've heard him sing Metropolis Part I and it is painful :)

Oh January is already looking great for new releases, Kamelot 'The Fourth Legacy', Demons & Wizards and Therion 'Deggial', the last 2 I have already and are brilliant :)

I just wanted to ask if anyone else has noticed a resemblance between "Meeting of the spirits" by Mahavishnu Orchestra and parts of "Freedom of speech"? It's pretty cool....

Good song, but sorry, I'm not big into Angra. I need some more of their material to make a semi-decent judgment. :P

    > Savatage - Alone I Breathe

Ah, this is a great song! Actually, I like practically all Savatage but don't really consider any of them *that* emotional. Perhaps I'm incorrect. :P

    > DT - Eve (I played this over at a dinner party and a friend burst into > tears - and no, the food wasn't that bad)

Now here is a song that I truly appreciate. ;-) "Eve" is absolutely stunning. Its melody is so haunting... Once very long ago I saw a young girl carrying flowers at a funeral, and this song reminds me of that occassion...

    > Michael Kiske - Always

Can't really make a decision about this one-- needs more time to "grow" on me.

    > Queensryche - Someone Else

    As said, a great song.

    > Tribute to Rush - Analog Kid (different kind of emotion - always puts a > smile on my face)

Ya know, this is a *really* good song, very well performed on the Rush tribute, but I simply don't find it emotional. Sorry, I'm more touched by "Subdivisions" off _Signals_ than this one-- not to tear down the song all, though. ;-)

    > Tesla - Song & Emotion > Skid Row - Wasted Time

Wow, two "hair" bands! Actually "Wasted Time" is a really awesome song; S. Bach has great range and sings very powerfully on it. As for the former, Tesla used to be one of my favorite bands, but I've fallen away from them. Thus, S&E isn't in my list.

I'd like to interject a few more of my own "emotional" songs:

Wyclef Jean - "Gunpowder" G n' R - "Estranged" (previously mentioned quite a few times, thanks guys, I had forgotten about this one! :-) Opeth - "April Ethereal" (heck, *anything* from _My Arms, Your Hearse_ or _Still Life_!) Tristania - "Angellore" Mendelssohnn - The Hebrides Overture, aka "Fingal's Cave," Op. 26

    ..and that's that. :D
